Very helpful, today 30.12.2023 when i change my bearing for my 10 years Toyota Corolla Altis ZRE172 i forgot to install the brake dust shield. In your video i saw that i need to cut a portion of the brake dust shield and i will do it tomorrow! thanks sir for this video.
Wow, what a helpful video! Thank you they wanted to charge a lot and like you said could have messed up the bearings. This is brilliant. Thanks again! You’re awesome.
I just got some spindles that were custom made and the shields came in horrible condition so I’m very glad I found this method cause I didn’t want to have to replace the baring again since they did them for free.. 💪🏼🙌🏼
Thank you. Brilliant idea. The ring around the hub in not necessary to hold dust shield on, it was made because during the manufacturing process, it is much easier to install dust shield before the hub bearing is pressed on. Also, I can tell from the part number that it is the same dust shield as I have for my 04 corolla. I wanted to see this first before I did the brake job. I bought two new dust shields 3 years ago and they have been sitting in a bin not installed. Time to do it this summer.
You're right about how they make ways to make it easy to assemble parts in the assembly plant... Not considering how hard for it to get replaced! Thank you so much for spending time watching and good luck on your project. Have a wonderful day ahead.
Yeah, you're right. I've those dust shields on the shelf for almost a year now but I was hesitant to cut a newly bought part. But it's the smartest thing to do. And more shelf space!
Hi LOLO and Thanks a lot for a great video to help many people. It is a really smart idea. I have a Toyota Matrix 2014, Looks like same Corolla. Thanks again. God bless LOLO
@@lologroovydiy I've been family wrench for 30+years ,always safe, not usually working in optimum conditions, usually wrenching whare it breaks to save family members $on tow,the tire is ever present and I don't have to remember or toat it to jobs,I'm always safe ,the tire is for my protection not the car ✌✌
Thank you so much for spending time watching. Your right! Once you cut a painted part, it needs to be painted! I mentioned it on the video because specially here by us, they put salt on the road during winter time. Again thank you and always keep safe!
I know some of the newer model car shields come in 2 parts. Another method is to split the solid shield and install the 2 halves. I hope I can get to the bolts on my 01 Honda . Remove the axle to replace the dust shield ?...madness. Nice video, thanks.
It will work as long as the screw hole on the dust shield is not compromised. But if you don't have any choice and need to cut portion of the hole just put a thin washer to hold it in place. Hope this will help you on your project. Thank you so much for spending time watching. Have a wonderful day ahead.
For added safety place a couple wheel stands under the car on each side of the front end. Or you could damage the rim and body should the car fall on the wheel placed underneath. Good work. No offense I've just never understood why it is that when people do good work they'll do stuff like that. Floor Jack's have been known to drop due to hydraulic leaks. It takes a little more effort but it's worth it using wheel stands because then you've got a jack and 2 stands for support. The wheel can just be rolled out of the way and put against a wall in a garage. If it was a salvage car or in a junkyard yeah but that's a nice car. Why risk it. That jack can roll too. Too much can happen. Peace. Just a car guy trying to look out for this younger generation. Most cant change a tire let alone turn a wrench but the ones who try often work dangerously.
Thank you so much for a beautiful advice. Everything is well taken and will be use in my videos to come. Again, many thanks and stay connected. God bless!
I looked at the dust shield for your vehicle at Amazon website and looks like it's possible to remove the thin section and slide the dust shield in. One advise... please make sure that there's room to slide the dust shield before cutting. Thank you for watching and have a wonderful day ahead!
thank you LO sa video mo po....very informative.... now I can replace my worn out dust shield.... pero am also thinking on removing them completely though.... among advice mo po?
J.F........If the dust shield is damaged and still attached on spindle, just use the same method shown in this video. Cut it off using the cutting wheel
Thank you for watching. Unfortunately my rear is a drum brake and doesn't have this part. If your car is a front wheel drive, I think you don't have to cut anything, because it comes with a hub assembly. The only thing you need to remove from the shield is the hand brake cable. Thanks again and have a wonderful day.
The rear dust shield holds the handbrake cable and if it's rusted and worn out it can have an effect on the hand brake tension. Try to have a second person pull the hand brake and try to touch or feel the dust shield for movements. If there's a big amount of play then that's the problem. Hope you fix the problem and thank you for watching. Have a wonderful day ahead.
@lologroovydiy thank you for your reply, I've had my handbrake cable adjusted and it made no difference so I've now got 2 dust plates on order..hopefully it sorts the problem:) thanks 👍
When using Loctite you have to pay attention to the size of the fastener. Blue or Red will not work on small fasteners. The bottles are marked and there is a Loctite or Permatex for fasteners 1/4" or under. I intend to use Loctite once I see what size fastener the 2004 Tahoe has on the front dust shield. Replaced the rear dust shield with the Dorman 2 pc shields, so you don't have to pull the hub off. They look great. Thanks again.
You can try soaking the bolts with Blaster penetrating spray or brake fluid overnight. Tap the bolt head with a hammer to break the rust before removing and hopefully this will help. One of the head bolts breaks when I tried to remove mine and ended up re-treading it. Thank you so much for spending time watching and have a wonderful day ahead!
@@lologroovydiy So I finished the right side. I didn't have Blaster so I use WD-40. I also didn't have patience to wait 24 hours. So I gave it about an hour and then started. Wire brushed the three bolts. I tapped the 10mm socket on with a hammer and used a 1/4 inch ratchet with an extension. I gently started turning right and left and felt no movement. Then I sprayed some more WD 40 and tried it again, giving it some more muscle. It came off! The others were pretty similar. The only major problem was that the holes in the aftermarket shield were drilled about a milimeter off so I had to make one wider with a drill. I'll tackle the other tomorrow. Thank you for your video and advice!
