I have a similar noise not when turning but after driving and breaking a little and only from one tire in the rear. Its a constant sound and goes away while braking and at high speeds, could this be the same issue didn't want to get my roters changed if I didn't have to.
@@union1082 Did you ever figure it out? It seems like I have a problem similar to yours. I went to a Firestone shop for an inspection and they said they couldn't find anything wrong.
Man I thought my brake pads were grinding my rotors. But I found out it was the dust shield. And my mechanic did exactly what you did. It was really a relief. Thank you for your videos.
Funny how you can explain to a mechanic that has 25 years experience that you hear a scraping noise from the front brakes and after he takes off the wheel and inspects them visually... finding NOTHING wrong and charges you $60.00 bucks you then come to CZcams and in literally under three minutes can find out what the problem is! Thanks for the video.

Yup! I saved my friend about $1000-$400 (parts and tools) replacing thermostat and brakes on Infiniti G37. The quotes were ridiculous! 😂
I was having this issue with my kid's car. My daughter told me she was hearing scrapping noises coming from the left front wheel. I pulled the wheel off and inspected the calibers and rotor. Everything looked ok. When I looked at the shield, it was obvious that it was making contact with the rotor. I bent the shield away from the rotor. I was relieved that it was an easy fix at no cost.
...awsome🙏 that my 16 honda accord ..that my wife jus bought is the same result!!
Gus Grey..
Thanks for sharing your experience. I talked to my mechanic because I cannot locate my go to "shade tree"/"back yard: mechanic.
Mine is probably the same but my brakes are also shaky and squealy so i know i have a bit of work to do
Can it be accessed without removing the wheel?
I had the same issue, but have one additional concern.
Do you think that this issue can affect your cars range? Because my lexus rx that is supposed to get 365 miles on a full tank, only made it 265 miles.
Now
I inspected the dust covers and noticed a hole rubbed through the rear right cover. After bending it back, the notorious sound is gone.
But I am curious if i can expect an improvement in how far i can drive on a full tank.
It pays not to jump right to the most expensive, worst case scenario in your mind before bringing your vehicle to your mechanic. Great video guys.
Thank you! That noise was driving me crazy! Every mechanic told me something different was wrong with the car. You saved me lots of money. Thank you again.

@@1AAuto Is it imperative to remove the wheel?
Thank you! I just got done replacing sway bar links on my chevy malibu. I took it for a test drive and immediately I could hear an awful scrapping noise coming from the front, it got worse with speed so I turned around to go back home (assuming the worst) before causing further damage. Found this video and instead of taking my tires off again I just took a flathead and pushed on the dust shield through the rim all the way around both front tires then drove it again and sure enough the noise was gone. This video saved me a lot of problem solving.
This is a very helpful video. It just saved me a lot of headache and mechanic extortion. Thanks, thumbs up for you.
Ima about to cut my dust shield off
Glad you guys made that point about the dust shield and rust on rotor. That's one that nobody else has mentioned. I'm having intermittent rubbing noise from front driver side and have changed the wheel bearing, new brake pads and still it persists just not as bad. So I have notice the dust shield and rust on the outer perimeter of the rotor. So, that's my next idea.
+Brian Gibson Thanks for the feedback!
Did you find this to be an easy fix for your problem? My back right tire is making rubbing noises too and it's driving me nuts.
I just had my breaks and rotors done two weeks ago and was hearing this thinking I somehow got scammed into paying for used brakes and rotors. Turns out it was just this so I bent the dust shield with a screw driver and man this was perfectly timed. Thanks so much.

Holy F I just did my brakepads at the dekaler and two days after this noise started.
Im gonna go out and see if i can fix this too
Mine was doing this scraping after having new brake discs and pads, so I have just ripped off the dust guard. Will have to buy a replacement but at least I can drive now without causing any more damage 😊
Thanks very much---this was very helpful, saved me a trip to the brake shop as well as whatever they would have charged me. When I do need new parts I'll check with you first since you took the time to make the video and earn the business. Thanks again

I just replaced a brake caliper and a brake hose of my wife’s car and then began hearing this awful scraping sound. Turned out I bent the dust shield into the rotor! I just used the spare tire pry hook to bend the rotor back in the circle k parking lot and now I’m very happy I watched your video

I just watched this, you saved me money man.. I was just about to go get ANOTHER CV joint.
Just replaced it last year.
This was super helpful. Mechanics wanted to change almost all suspensions parts, because I was having similar issue. Simple army knife fix at no cost solved the problem :)

Mechanics are, by and large, crooks. Make sure you learn a thing or two about basic car maintenance. I'd never want to be at the mercy of a lawyer or a mechanic; they both have one mission: bilk you for money by any means necessary.
Yup I had the same symptom after putting in front struts. When I jacked the knuckle to prevent too much CV joint stretch I must have bent the dust shield also. 5 minutes and a screwdriver and problem solved
Hell ya!
@@opannefrank1986 I totally agree. Thanks for posting that.
Wow, that's exactly what I needed to see, because that fits the noise I'm getting. Now I know what to check! Thank you!
Hi ! I believe that your video actually solved my problem, I hit a curb sideways yesterday and above 60mph I can hear some noise around front wheel, not sure which side, but I believe your video solved my problem, will check tomorrow morning!
thanks !
Also check to see if your lug nuts are on firmly. That happened to me once. Back wheel was making a grinding sound. Went to check for debris or hindrances and found the lug nuts were coming loose. Wow... and lucky it made noise.
Yes mine keep getting stolen so I’m getting locks since I need 2 anyway. I had a person change my tire and it the lug nuts was loose same noise
If your steering wheel is shaking, that could be happening with a front tire. Fyi for the future.
You guys do some of the best auto repair videos on CZcams

thank you sooo much for your help
First video I have ever watched that was very helpful. Great videography!! 👍
Just had this problem and the clips that hold the pads were slightly over sized so we ground them down but not enough on the passenger side so the clips on the outer side were rubbing on the rotor causing a squealing or high pitch noise. So make sure to check the clips that hold the break pads.
Another reason for this type of noise is that upon getting new tires, sometimes the weights used on the inside of the tire rim used to balance the tire can rub against the brake parts. This just happened to me on my Honda CR-V. The weights were rubbing up against the brake pad retainers and causing a horrible scraping noise.
You're a fn genius. Thank you!!!
Solved my issue on 2003 Explorer. Brakes still good. Thanks for the video. I'm buying my parts in the future from you just because of this video.
This is EXACTLY the same sound I am hearing right now on my 2012 Nissan. Front driver side wheel, only makes this sound when I turn right. Wow, I'll take a look at this tomorrow. If it is as simple as this, I will be a very happy man! Thanks for the video.
Did you figure out the issue?
After changing the cv axle with no results, I figured out that it was a corroded rotor rubbing against the dustplate and metallic tips of the brake paid retainers.....I've been doing my own suspension repairs for decades and never before has this happened (perhaps because I usually change rotors when I change brake pads)! This video is a good tip that I haven't seen anywhere else! This tip should be mentioned in all of those other videos dealing with bad bearings and cv joints. My issue started on a 2015 nissan versa with 42K as a very slight clicking noise that was worse when i turned the car to a particular side. Same symptom as a bad cv axle. Within a few weeks it morphed into a loud scraping sound, especially on turns.
Thanks for the feedback! +superdow
Fantastic video.... I’ve got the same problem on 2011 Hyundai i10 (UK) a lack of use issue and a lack of service / cleaning of these parts. Big thumbs up.
Thank you for sharing this info with your viewers. That scraping sound is a lil like how my rear brakes sound on the right.
Part of me was thinking they were gritty from dust that blows about in our cul-de-sac complex, and the accumulation was causing a build-up, and then a part of me thought the pads were scraping, which they probably are.
The sound isn't a continuous one, but is more sporadic as though there was a few spots rubbing and also when I use the brakes. I sprayed both rotors on the outer edge with WD-40 and they got a lil bit quieter, but they do make some noise. Will have to get them checked out soon, but at least I don't drive my van much.

Great video! I recently had this issue (for two years). 😒 yep, my mechanic knew immediately the cause and bent it back no charge.
Thanks so much!!! I have an issue with my 2018 Honda Accord LX. First thing in the morning I went to push back my dust shield behind the rotor, I heard something drop 🤔 started my car drove it for while below 5/10 mph and the sound is gone, it's was rock 🙏🏽
Thanks for the informative, no bull videos. I will definitely look into purchasing parts from your company.
Thank you so much. Very informative. Straight to the point. It helped me a lot.
Hi jumping on here because my son was having issues with his camry and I started having this issue with my Jeep. You guys have saved my son and I $$$ in repairs. I buy from you guys because of this. Would it be easier to shop via Amazon? Sure, but I don't trust chinese steel and questionable parts. I know shopping with you guys I'll get what I need 1st time, right every time thusfar. Thanks for this video and all your tips. I've replaced door handles, a rear suspension to include subframe, exterior and interior lights thanks to your short tutorials. Keep up the great service and work!
In some cases, Because the dust shield is made of aluminum, over time the bolts will eat through the aluminum causes the dust shield to dangle. Regardless of how you bend it it will still scrape. In this scenario you will need a new dust shield
I had this noise so bad on my car, it sounded like someone was banging on a sauce pan with a spoon!
Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful to me. I bent the guard against the disc while replacing the brake pads and it was making this loud grinding noise afterwards.

What a legend saved me so much time and money
Thank you for sharing this helpful video. 🤝
Extremely helpful thank you
I'm trying this, it happens intermittently and it looks closer than the other dust sheild. I was also racing against the rain when I finished the brake job and the wheel slipped sprained my thumb and rolled around under the rotor. I also added extra lube and did a light sand on what appeared to be glazing, an i think that's what was causing squeaking on the other side. Hopefully all the noise is cleared up
My noise just started this morning. Thanks. I'll check this

My dust shield wasnt rubbing but I cleaned as much rust as I could from inner and outer rotor edges and noise went down considerably.
Thanks man now I know what's wrong with my breaks, another mechanic told me I need break calipers, can that be the noise by my breaks sir
Thank you, that fixed it🙋🏻

Thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars (and time dealing with a repair shop)! I was able to fix it without even removing the wheel! I just took a flashlight and a long screwdriver and pushed back the shield a little through the wheel. No idea why this has downvotes, it's a good suggestion.

My wife didn’t drive her Forester for a week.. immediately had this same sound from both front wheels. Brakes had just been checked 2 weeks ago and were fine. Couldn’t figure out where the problem was. I watched this video then went out and fixed this exact issue in 5 minutes. Didn’t even have to remove the wheel.. I was able to see the shield touching the rotor through the wheel spoke. Thanks for the great video!

Any you also take a wire wheel to the outer edge of the disc to get rid of some of the rust?
Thank you so much 😊
I just changed my brake pads and rotors and had to hammer one of the rotors off, the rock guard was bent during the process. Now I have this same noise while driving straight and quiets on turns. I won’t have a chance to straighten the guard for a while. Any issues driving for a while with this?
This noise just started on my truck. I was afraid it was a hub or bearing going bad. Huge relief.
Exactly the same for me, was worried a bearing or some driveshaft was done
I wish I had seen this video, i just changed my wheel hub on my truck today $180.00 :( I still get the same rubbing sound, I will check the cover now.
Thank you so much! I thought I would have to change my wheel bearing but no.
I have a sqeaking/screeching noise that sounds like metal scraping, ive replace wheel hub bearing and brake pads, any idea what it could be?
thank you!!!
Thanks for a behind the rotor look!

Was having the same issue on my Forester; a slight metallic tick tick sound from a front wheel that changed pitch based on how fast the wheel was rotating. With the rims I have I didn't even need to take wheel off, just stuck my finger between spokes and pushed the top of the shield back a tiny bit. Took all of 10 seconds.
Me too
I only hear a slight pretty quiet grind from the rear driver side of my 2016 428i when accelerating after backing the car out of the driveway. 39k miles on the car and its a cpo. Any suggestions, should i check the heat shield?
Thank you so much
Awesome video!

If i have similar rust on the edge of my rotor that is contacting the splash/dust guard and causing audible noise when driving, does it cause any damage to the rotor or brakes ?
*Update - I cannot thank you enough. This was indeed the problem! That thin metal shield at 0:54 was slightly bend in as I looked from bottom to top (even just touching it with the screwdriver mimiced the same noise I was hearing) Just pried it out a bit, knocked some corrosion off it also, few shots of compressed air. The God awful annoying sound when I turn right is finally gone! Thanks so much, I was fearing this was some major issue.

Own 1996 Crown Lx. All 4 wheels are dragging very lightly enought to generate heat and notice drag. What direction should i start looking
I pulled a fallen tree that was too much load. Front brakes on the side of the hook made a grinding noise. I replaced the brake calipers, and still a problem. I replaced the brake hoses and still a problem and a louder grinding sound. Finally I replaced the wheel bearing assembly and this was the cure. I must have broken the wheel bearing, bearing retaner.
Also the ABS light went completely off from going on and off.
Thanks 1AAuto. I have a scraping noise much like this, but mostly when backing up and when I push the brake pedal down after backing up. I just had the brake pads replaced about 1 week ago. Does it sound like the same thing? Thanks

Thank you!
I got new pads and rotors from you guys it’s been a week and they are grinding
If a piston was not compressed enough after putting a new rotor and brake pad on, would that cause a grind on the front of the rotor?
I have a question. I hear bad scraping from my rear 2WD Highlander. I just replaced the hub bearing and dust shield. Could a bad strut make the rotor hit the dust shield? At higher speeds I do NOT hear this as much. there is a little play in the strut shaft if I yank on it. I want to buy all new struts if this is the problem. It seems to be only coming from the passenger side
Something im going to check in morning. No other video mentioned dust shield.✊👍 My pads are good and rotor brand new. If the dust shield doesn't fix the problem.... Could it be the caliper & or mounting bracket??🙏
+Fish Life & Knives We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
@@1AAuto was literally the dust shield. 👍
When I put my Torota Corolla in reverse I hear a high pitch screetching sound that at first sounded like a humming noice. It is coming from my rear passenger side tire. My brakes are fairly new and the sounds are not a grinding sound. It sounds almost like something is stuck in the tire, but I only hear that sound when I back up even if I do not apply the brakes at all. I do not hear that sound when driving forward. Any ideas what is might be? THanks!
My car is doing it but from the back.. and has drums rather than disk brakes.
But makes exactly same noise.
I inspected the front and back brakes and everything seems to be fine but now that I saw this helpful video hopefully I can locate the issue..
Anybody with rear drum brakes issues like this? Please advice.
