    I've never been worried for indie games being overshadowed by AAA games in regards to open world games. Size doesn't equal quality. Indie games will always be around making smaller open worlds with more exciting content than AAA game studios.

      was just gonna comment this, the more massive but dull games like ac:valhalla come out the more players will value quality over quantity in their open worlds. I think most people would rather play a game like stardew or Subnautica over most modern ubisoft games

      Well said. Games like Valheim prove that games don't have to be massive pieces of garbage like Assassin's Creed Valhalla. They can be smaller and more creative like indie games and be a lot better and enjoyable.

      nowdays indie games probably want fans to be able to enjoy playing games with fun story and unique mechanics that AAA refuse to give fans I also heard that some AAA are starting to virute signalling and politics and all of those stuff what I heard at least

      I disagree with the advancements coming to A.I. development very soon the indie games won't have original ideas better than triple AAA companies won't already have.

    The thing about some of the games/franchises is that it's impossible for massive companies to agree on something so they recreate the older games (like assassins creed for example) and make the new games with what they think people enjoy like big maps and stealth while getting rid of the things that give the game soul like a good story.

    Any developer just needs to play through kingdome come to see how it should be done
    That game is absolutely amazing and the map is one of the biggest selling points for me, actually feels like youre in the world and not just a copy and paste loot box area

    Kingdom come deliverance's nature is hands-down, the BEST ever made.
    I finished the game two times, I'm now on my third playthrough and I'm still awed by the beauty and believability of its map.

    Sons of the Forest reminded me of an issue that the original "The Forest" did not have. When you make a map huge, its often barren and you need to put map markers that need to be beelined instead of us actually exploring the map organically. If there were no map markers, we would NEVER have found all the caves and bunkers etc in SOTF. Then there's Far Cry 6, it was a good game that could have been AMAZING if they just trimmed the fat and got rid of the middle section of the map which offered nothing unique compared to either the east or the west. I loved AC Origins and Odyssey mainly because of my love for that historic setting, but the same complaint remains about the bloat. Didn't even play Valhalla because I know it will be more of the same and I have "been there done that" - not to mention I'm tired of Vikings

    I'd personally pin a TES VI release date to be more along the lines of 2026 rather than 2028. Even though Sweet Little Liar has said at most it was in the design phase as of 2021, when the team was in full dev mode on Starfield, I think they've got more done at this point than they're letting on. The team at Bethesda have expanded so much over the last decade, I think they'll have a much better flow between games than they've ever done before, as they dont have 95% of their people needing to work on just the one game right up to and beyond its launch. While it might sound bad to diehard fans of one series or another, I think they'll be targetting a 15 year cycle between games in a series/5 years between BGS releases. Either that or, hopefully, more DLC releases to componsate for longer development cycles. Although, in saying that, Fallout 4's DLC werent all that much better than Skyrims, especially in terms of release cycle. So I think Starfield will be the key benchmark in seeing how they intend to proceed into the future. btw, this comment is based on nothing but my best attempt at balanced optimism, i really dont know shit.

      All really valid points though. I’m also hoping that 2028 is like their safe estimate of time to give them some cushion for a release. And jeez 15 year cycle would be nuts but who knows maybe they will release giant expansions/dlcs every 3-5 years.

    This is the benefit of semi-open world games such as Assassin's Creed 1 and 2, fallout 1,2 practices, and arguably new vegas with its DLCs. All of this makes you FEEL like the map is bigger than it really is without having to add a bunch of pointless blank space.

    I didn't finish the last 3 open world games that I played. That has never happened to me before. I'll tell you one example why, in Far Cry I happened to climb on this mountain that I thought was unreachable. I was intrigued because I thought it was some sort of hidden secret. What did I find in there? A hidden faction? A legendary weapon? A secret quest? No I found a chest containing a spoon. It's the same chest you can find anywhere else on the map. I don't want more locations, I want unique locations.

    For one there are far too many of them. Over saturation is something developers need to consider. I dislike the vast majority of open world games. They're either too big for it's own good resulting in so much empty space and/or tedious side quests. A lot of them recycle the same template again and again at nauseum. Breath of The Wild and Tears of The Kingdom are really bad with that. There are only so many times I can find a shrine,seed or useless weapon before it all blends together and disillusions me. That's the problem with so many open world games particularly Ubisoft games. The open world Zelda games I mentioned are just Ubisoft open world games yet they get lauded as "best game ever made" and it is baffling to me. Skyrim is a game that is also samey to me. It has a lot of problems I won't get into and frankly I got bored of it ages ago. I don't think I coukd ever touch it again but I can with Oblivion.

    If you haven’t already, you should check out Days Gone. The way this world keeps you on your toes by it’s enemy diversity and spontaneity in the way they stalk and attack you, makes you appreciate the isolation moments it also gives you to admire the beauty of it’s apocalyptic world.

    The problem I have with open world games is although you get cool things once in a blue moon from side quests. They feel pointless and I think that whatever side quest you do should truly in some way change the main quest. I don't mean with choices that don't really have consequences or positive change but ones that truly change things. Things as little as someone's family fighting against your or joining you in the end to killing worshippers loved by certain gods etc.

    I disagree that a super large map can't be filled with enough variety to do ... the reason, if you really want to replicate large scale maps then there should be plenty of open land with actually no quests or events, but filled with the local flora and fauna and the occasional random encounter. Give me a game that I can play for hundreds of hours on end and I'm satisfied.

    I love open world games but yeah alot of them are just filled with nothing. Im waiting for a game studio to start making a game where every building is enterable and start thinking vertically where we can go up and down buildings and its filled with npcs and things to do. Cyperpunk almost got close but still fell short. And also im tired of open world rpgs waisting our time with fetch quests i think dial back on questsnot have as many but in return make every interaction memorable and every quest a short story.

      Dude, what's the point of that? Is this all there is to a good game? A massive map that has buildings that you can enter every room of every building? Then what? What is there to do in there? Kill the people inside or torch up the place ( you know, typical gamer activities ) or talk to a random schmuck to get a pointless cookie cutter quest? You said you hate games that waste your time with fetch quests, what do you think a massive map with hundreds of buildings with thousands of rooms will end up doing? Yeah, waste your time :D Developers have to stop this stupid "Who's going to make it bigger." race and concentrate on better writing and interesting worldbuilding-engaging character stories. You know, the good stuff :D

      Man... Insomniac did fix that quite a bit in Miles Morales! Becuase those side missions brought a better story than the main storyline itself.
      To me, that speaks volumes of improvement... and shows the potential of what they can do within Spider-Man 2.
      Miles Morales' side missions had so far better depth, connection, and MEANING within their narratives.
      If they focus SPECIFICALLY on that type of stuff in Spider-Man 2? Where the open world would dive DEEP into the civilians of NYC as we make connections with them! Truly exploring the great depth and GRIT of crime that runs the streets. And especially bringing in amazing villains that we can encounter as we explore.
      Focusing on those three aspects and creating genuine narratives that are independent or connected, either big or small? They can truly give us an experience that makes us FEEL like we're NYC's webbed hero.
      Being The Spider-Man.
      And making New York feel alive.

      ​@huseyinsekerciler5344 I'm really excited for Spider-Man 2... even though there's gonna be Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn! It might seem incredibly possible that they'll focus on genuine narratives for the open world that makes us truly feel like Spider-Man.
      They improved the side mission in miles morales becuase those stories brought a better narrative for miles than the main story itself.
      They had better meaning, depth and connection.
      If they focus on that type of stuff when it regards civilians, crime, and villains specifically in Spider-Man 2? It'll be special, for sure.

    The future of gaming isn't just bullcrap rehashed open world. It's either hardcore MMO concepts like what Mortal Online 2 is doing or its an open world game with roleplay powered by the "everything made by players"
    Also, the new open world games need to include AI powered NPCs, as shown by many custom mods on skyrim & other platforms, AI powered NPCs really add much more interest in the game & by definition all areas of the world in it

      @@mrholotape8376 can't recommend it enough. A genuine open universe to explore. It's actually crazy. Can't even see myself bothering with Starfield as this scratches my space itch. And this has seamless planet to space travel without a loading screen, which Bethesda apparently haven't been able to achieve.

      Oh yea No Man's sky vr is incredible..I met a dude a he showed me his freighter and we just stood on it on the outside just talking in space..with planets and ships in the backround...its truly immersive..I want to retire and play it for like 5 years straight lol

      ​@@mrholotape8376 my brother I definitely recommend giving it a try. I was turned off from initial launch but understood that that kind of potential would've been hard to live up to. Now? It's leaps and bounds beyond what I could've imagined and still getting expanded upon with free expansions all the time lately. I couldn't recommend it enough at full price.

      ​@@himynameis3664If you love exploration, then there's no way NMS scratches your itch. NMS is a survival building game, not an exploration game. Every planet has a single biome, every planet has the exact same looking fauna and flora, every system has the exact same types of planets, every system has the exact same aspace station. Landing on a planet no longer feels exciting in NMS since when you landm you'veseen everything it has to offer.
      Starfield's planets, on the other hand will have biomes and handcrafted animals, there will be handcrafted huge cities, there will be handcrafted POI, handcrafted quests. These are two completely different games. Bethesda exells at exploration and questing, while Hello Games exells at survival sandboxes. If you love exploration, Starfield is for you. If you love survival and building, NMS is for you.

    Has No Mans Sky changed? I bought it as a survival game lover my wife and I joined a coop and played for a day, but outside the first few minutes when we had to work out how to collect the initial resources there was nothing driving us forwards. No impending danger, no enemies to prevent you from doing things. Just endless sameness. the only challenge was inventory management. I would gather resources and usually not even know why or what to do with them.
    In contrast I put a few thousand hours in to Conan Exiles mostly in PVP. In that environment you KNOW why you get resources and make risk
    eward decision constantly. I just assumed my expectations were wrong for NMS.

    I came here expecting someone using zelda botw as an example of a good open world game, but you surprised me. Zelda botw is one of the most boring open worlds. The combat is the same throughout the game, the weapons are only 4: spear, sword, greatsword, bow and magic wand. Yes, you can find different weapons, but they are the same only with another skin and the breaking system is also trash. There are only a few monsters, maybe 15, most of the time you'll be killing a lizard or bokoblins. And the exploration sucks. 90% of the time you'll find a kokori seed or a shrine, and the shrine is trash, just a boring puzzle with the same reward, an orb. you don't have a reason to explore this game because you will always find the same thing over and over again.

    Kingdom come, RDR2, Witcher3, Fallout 3 and New vegas, San andreas, GTA5, Skyrim, BOTW are ome of the best open worlds out there. But they are hard to make in terms of making them a living breathing world and having a sense of discovery. That said i have really been enjoying older linear games lately. Most devs are horrible at making open worlds and should stick to more linear games. Seeing RE4 remake, Dead space remake so there is an interest in linear games Playing games like Mafia 2 again, Maxpayne 3, splinter cell conviction, Ryse son of Rome last of us 1 has been a blast.

    witcher 3 map is not 142 km² not even close, that's just some rumors circulated in games space. people actually measure it and find out it was pretty close to skyrim map

    *ive always been a fan of smaller maps with big content from day one.....Yakuza 0, Saints Row 3, Bully, Control, MGS5:TPP.....all small/medium sized games PACKED with 200+ hours of content....as opposed to a GTA5 or RDR2 which are boring AF after you complete the story.*

    There are 2 main problems with gaming today and to be honest the only 2 problems in my eyes. They are:
    1. Corporate greed rushing games and maximizing profit.
    2. The modern day gaming community itself.

    I wanted to try Kingdom Come but this game needs some good pc. Like I can run Cyberpunk with high or ultra setting at stable 60 fps but in Kingdom come my pc is dying at medium and struggles to get 30 fps on low.

    Prey 2017 is a perfect illustrative example of why we shouldnt even crave AAA open worlds anymore. Space and size are relative, Talos 1 feels bigger than Assassins Creed Odyssey in a way. Highly recommend anyone feeling disillusioned with modern game design, please try Prey.

    Ubisoft is the most soulless company out there, after Far Cry 3 everything went down hill, they just keep adding new location new points for climb and nothing changes, on Valhalla last AC game they added so much grind so people stop playing game after so much repeating all the BS they put in those raids and opening chests or they buy faster XP or gold via microtransactions and that's what they want, they expand time to finishing the game and there was not much in it if i remember correctly there was only 10 weapons in the game you can upgrade but you can't find any new, soulesss rpg system from AAA studio Ubisoft can't be beside studios like Rockstar Games or Warhorse Studios because they don't deserve spot between then anymore... don't get me wrong they have amazing game designer and asset makers, they make beautiful locations and trying to sell game for graphics and few new features but gameplay loop is boring, characters have no souls and it is not a game studio years ago made AC,AC II and so on...
    and whoever is director to all of that should be fired!

    Open World games from "AAA Developers" have really went deep into the trenches of mediocrity (Thanks Ubisoft😒).
    But that doesn't mean there's no hope for the future.
    Elden Ring and Zelda TOTK just came out a while ago and so far people are wanting more of those IN-DEPTH experiences when it comes to an open world game.
    I really have my eye on insomniac games this year.
    *A BIG eye on them...*
    I know Spider-Man ps4 tread the same path with an ubisoft like open world when it comes to towers, fetch quests, collectibles, and cookie cutter side missions. I will not ignore ANY of those factors... but Spider-Man ps4 was their first try at ever approaching an open world Spider-Man based game.
    So i'll cut them some slack becuase miles morales showed that they're not incompetent to ever improve themselves! Even though miles still had "some" of those collectible and fetch quest like stuff in the open world? The side missions were the biggest highlight of improvement... and shows the greatest potential on what they could do within the sequel.
    The side missions in miles morales brought a better narrative of miles becoming Spider-Man than the main story itself! They had depth, connection, and meaning.
    They made us connect with civilians of NYC, man.
    It truly made you feel like the freindly neighborhood Spider-Man, and that's really good to see. Spider-Man 2 is right around the corner, and i'm really having faith in insomniac to be one of those types of people to do an open world experience good again for a single player game.
    If they just SPECIFICALLY dive deep into great narratives that are either BIG or Small for the open world? Ones that connect storylines with each other, or encounter random independent situations that gives you a fine experience. Stuff where we can interact DEEPLY with the civilians of New York, exploring the great DEPTH and grit of crime that runs the streets, and encounter VILLAINS as we explore New York.
    This game could be the final push to finally head open world experiences towards the right direction.
    Maybe... but i'ma have faith this year! Insomniac are good people within the AAA industry, so i really hope they push the envelope this generation.

    I have seen videos like this even 4 years ago. Gamers are complaining about if for a while. I always go back to Gothic 1+2 , Fallout 3+NV, Elex and now playing Gothic Multiplayer.

    You're not acknowledging the effect AI will have on small game developers. No longer will you need a full development studio, but instead a small team will be able to make vastly larger and more reactive games than ever before using AI assisted tools. The internet and things like CZcams have decentralized media and the creation of video content to an extent that would have been unimaginable in the 90's. AI will do the same for game development as well as many other things, hence why those in power demonosie AI and spin scare stories about it just like they did with the internet in the 90's.

      @@mrholotape8376 i am probably blinded by some nostalgia. Mechanics/Fighting/Graphics is very outdated by now but the open world feeling is something very unique.

    I Think I Might Have A Definition of Triple A Studio Game Company , A game studio with large success or wealth with early great titles overshadowed by the newer ones which are not as innovative and are designed to leech on your wallet every 1-4 years they release a new game , if they don't release a new game they will try to leech of there most recent title until it gives out

    I suppose it would be quite the exaggeration for me to say that I don't care about any of this, but it's not what I think about.
    From what's presented here, I would say the survivability of indie studios is of the utmost concern to me, but the rise of AI - meaning it's ability to create systems - that can generate unique assets, including simulations and other code, will probably make it easier for smaller dev teams to make bigger, more complex games, that still have an artistically dictated experience. Though of course, being able to do more with less money threatens the jobs of many people working in the "AAA" part of the industry too.
    The "arcade-like" experience as you describe it strikes me as a typical limitation of time and hardware - a little less so than a limitation of creativity. If you've ever heard the argument that Telltale Games pretends to have meaningful choices, but the story is always on rails with only a few minor cosmetic variations. This is because:
    A) People are spoiled by choice.
    B) They don't accept subtle variations that can (arguably) alter the context surrounding the events meaningful enough.
    C) They don't understand basic mathematical concepts.
    If every choice in those games had "meaning" in the way that those people seem to look for meaning, than the exponential growth of the consequences of those choices make development of the game in a human lifetime impossible.
    "Reasons" to explore an open world function in much the same way. There really is no way to make that meaningful. It's arbitrary. I'm not saying you can't innovate. I won't argue, like some people will, that there is no such thing as originality, but options are very much limited.
    To me open world games have always been about backdrop. Thinking back the thrill of GTAIII was really in knowing that you could get into a car chase, and that chase could end "literally anywhere" making it seem more like an authentic and unpredictable action "movie" experience. Now these games are wildly insecure in their ability to deliver an experience that cinematic unpredictably. They hold your hand through a series of predetermined "story oriented" set pieces designed to show off the developers' favorite idea for a very specific action scene with a few (usually obnoxious) fail states, rendering it something closer to a theme park ride than a gaming experience.
    Don't get me wrong when this is done well it can also be plenty entertaining, however this illustrates my biggest problem with open world games in how often they demonstrably aren't one. Or rather reveal to the player that they shouldn't be one.
    Of course I don't think it can be all backdrop either, my biggest problem with LA Noire was that it felt like a big museum to 40's LA - you know - look, but don't touch. But then a lot of people like that game and claim it's a classic of the genre. There was a lot of handholding bs in that too from what I remember but I digress.

    Open world games are dying? You say it like it's a bad thing :D Like Captain Kirk once said: "Then let them die." Jokes aside, this massive world craze is getting out of hand and it's a good thing the players are getting bored of all these games and want something more compact and direct. It never ends, next game is bigger, the one after that is bigger, and the one after that is way more massive but what's the point? The bigger it gets, the more it starts to feel like a job. You know, a job which you're not getting paid.

    open world are trash simply because of copy paste
    Even BOTW are fking trash, sure you can " do everything" but all of them are copy paste with 0 interaction
    The reason wh RDR2 interaction is amazing, but gameplay is boring. Both RDR2 and BOTW lack something that Subnautica and skyrim have that make them perfect, amazing and addictive, and MOST IMPORTANLY FUNNNN
    The reason why Skyrim is the best. Not only they solve the "copy paste" dungeon, but because their gameplay is ADDICTED. Combat is not great, but the quest is amazing. The dungeon despite "copy paste" , similar lay out. They often act as quest, lore expansion, there is enough dungeon varity and unique rewards like the Black star gem quest. The skyrim also done great job at INTERACTION , NPC, town interaction are one of the biggest reason why it 's so fun, so lively compare to BOTW which is dead, empty and broken despite both having copy paste element
    YOU DONT NEED BIG MAP JUST TO COPY PASTE SAME THING. You need Hollow knight, Subnautica, Halo 1-3. you need semi linear, interaction , and amazing story/ gameplay make a good game

    I do like open world games like Fallout 3, New Vegas, 4, State of Decay, 2, Conan Exiles and I absolutely LOVED Red Dead Redemption, it is my favorite game of all time but RDR2...well, I absolutely hate it. To me, RDR2 isn't an open world game like the first one. Instead of going out and exploring the map and adventures start when you run across NPC's, RDR2 has players tethered to a gang of losers and seems to be a cinematic experience that allows the player to play in between the cinematic scenes. RDR online lets the player play how they want but other players make the experience miserable for new players. Fallout 76 is another open world game that I still play but don't care for, because its focus is being a First Person Shooter game, like Fortnite where the goal is to kill tons of enemies, rise & repeat. The one open world game that I love is Conan Exiles because the game is what you make it, however there is a big lack in story content, there are only a few NPC's that tell the player things or send them on missions. The company updates the game like every 2 months and adds new features quite often to keep the game fresh. The biggest advantage of Conan is that it promotes building clans with other players, unlike games like Call of Duty, you invite people to join your clan and build, fight and protect your settlement together. Many boast co-op but Conan does its best to make the players want to team up.
    Personally I want something more like RDR, Fallout 4 and Conan Exiles wrapped up into one game but since these are all from different developers, I may not see anything like that for some time.
