      My best friend and my daughter in law are readers, thank goodness! Although our tastes are different, we have a few books we all love and they’re fiction! I describe reading to those who don’t read that they can be anywhere in the world or in another world and they can learn anything.

    Here! Here! Books have been my constant companion throughout my life. Books have sustained me through the bad times, mad times, and broken times and I would not be the person I am today without all those stories. ❤

    This is so well said and I completely agree. When I was seven, my father had The Hobbit out from the library. I thought it looked interesting, so I swiped it and he let me. It blew me away. Here was a fantasticical world, yet the characters (some of them, anyway) were so relatable! The next year, I read Lord of the Rings for the first time. The series is still one of my all-time favorites, and it's one I revisit still. It's like seeing old friends. I love fiction so much, and I love a wide range of genres: fantasy, science fiction, family sagas, romance, historical fiction...thank you for an eloquent defense of one of my favorite pastimes.

    One book that had a profound effect on me is actually a children's book I read a few years ago. The War that Saved My Life. It so eloquently showed how bad conditions aren't what determine our lives, it's our responses that matter. This author addressed so many societal issues with such gentleness and courage, I am in awe. Physical and emotional abuse, physical disability, panic attacks, depression, betrayal. But doesn't rub your nose in it. The little girl orchestrates her own salvation and freedom from the abuse, and helps raise up those around her. An astonishing book.

      We have been homeschooling two of our grandchildren since the beginning of the pandemic . (We are both retired teachers, having taught literature,writing, history, science, and math dining our long careers. ). I read aloud to them every day and we recently completed The War That Saved My Life as well as its sequel, The War I finally Won. Both children, one 13 and the other 11, learned so much from those novels. They were involved with the story and the characters completely. The children and I totally agree with you. The books are astonishing!

      @booksfrommybookshelf  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks Laurie - I haven't read this book, but it's so true about it being our responses to what happens that matter, not what happens - this is just the sort of thing that fiction can teach us, and especially a great thing for children to learn at an early age.

    I totally agree with you Rosamunde! Everybody should read fiction! I read all kinds of different books! It just depends on my mood what kind of book I choose to read at any given time! I love to buy books from second hand book stores because I usually can't find exactly what I'm looking for but I always find something else and I never not buy a book just because it's fiction or non fiction or whatever it is! Thank you so much for this video! And I love your necklace!🙂

    So many people lean towards Fantasy, Thrillers , etc.
    I love those genres however, my top favorite books are all Fiction.
    It is highly underrated.
    “To Kill A Mockingbird “ ****
    “Remarkably Bright Creatures” ***
    “Demon Coperhead” ******
    & “Lessons In Chemistry”
    are all my faves, in that order. And while there are numerous fantasy, thrillers, memoirs, horror and many other genres, that I love, it’s worth noting that my top four favorite books are fiction.
    😊 Good Vlog!

    This was so beautifully said. You are speaking right to my soul as to all the other fellow readers, I'm sure. I completely agree that books change lives. Mine was definitely changed many times over by nonfiction and fiction books alike and more recently even by fanfictions. I find that the authors of fanfictions are unafraid to explore very difficult themes and in such a powerful and honest way that I have rarely come across in any other form of literature. Perhaps the sense of writing mostly anonymously gives them the strength to really dig deep into the human soul, and reading such stories is like therapy to me. It's extremely healing. I would highly recommend you try some fanfictions. I mostly read Harry Potter related ones, but I know that you are a huge fan of Lord of the Rings and there's quite a big range of those too. I'd love to hear your opinions if you ever try to read some fanfiction. The most popular site to find them is called Archive of Our Own (also known as ao3)... Thank you so much for such a lovely video. You always make happy when talking about books with such enthusiasm. I really appreciate it. 😍 Take care and have a lovely day...

      Thanks for your lovely comment. I haven't read any fan fiction - but I do sometimes listen to audio books on YT that are LOTR or Harry Potter related, which I suppose is a similar thing. I listen to them at night as they help me switch off before going to sleep. 🙂

      @@booksfrommybookshelfYes, they are. Some of the more popular fanfictions are sometimes recorded by fans or the authors themselves. That's how I got into reading them, too. ☺

    What a greatly needed jolt you gave me. I tend to read non-fiction and wondered why my reading had lacked something lately!

  • @m.joseph7100
    @m.joseph7100 Před 4 měsíci +1

    I didn't become a serious reader of fiction until I was in my late 30s. I'm now 42. I think my switch from non-fiction to fiction coincided with the rise of social media and the constant news feed just exhausting me. I needed an escape, so thank you to Thomas Hardy, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen, Stephen King, etc. for keeping me sane these last few years.
    (On a side note...someone told me recently they were surprised to find out I reread books. I find out so much more when I do, as I can't expect to absorb everything the first read. I've read The Mayor of Casterbridge 3 times because the twists and reveals in that book are crazy. I'm looking forward to rereading The Count of Monte Cristo this year.)

    • @booksfrommybookshelf
      @booksfrommybookshelf  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That's very true - whenever you re-read something, you always see something that you hadn't noticed before. I'm gradually reading all of Dickens' books just to get even more out of them than I did before!

  • @AnnaD791

    My husband and his family only read non-fiction and see fiction as a frivolous waste of time. I love fiction and I've learnt so much from reading it. Quite often I find myself looking things up on google or Wikipedia and reading around the subject, especially with historical fiction. Also, fiction kept me sane in the recent lockdowns - I could still travel the world and meet lots of interesting people through the amazing books I was reading.

    An excellent argument for the value of fiction. I would suggest that you do a show on reading fiction in translation. When I think of the powerful effect that books had on me personally, many seem to be translations. Jorge Amado,the Brazilian, is an author that had that effect. Gabriel Garcia Marquez also. The French writers too. Many other cultures and countries to explore. Who would you list, I wonder?

    • @booksfrommybookshelf
      @booksfrommybookshelf  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi Lou. I think that the most books I've read in translation are probably Russian authors - Tolstoy (War & Peace and Anna Karenina), and Dostoevsky and Turgenev. For French, I've read and enjoyed Voltaire - but I couldn't get on with Proust!

I might not have read it were it not for my TV and internet being shut off for a month for forgetting to pay the bill, so thank you greedy utility companies. What research! I have read many a profound statement, about life, people, feelings... within a fictional story, that has stopped me in my tracks. Anyone who believes fiction is a waste of time is a shallow, pseudo-intellectual, in my humble opinion.
