  • Wet sanding can be as scary as using the rotary to some. today we debunk the myths and shed the fear! Wet sanding is the quickest and safest way to correct paint. and if you pay attention to these videos...you will understand why. there is no need to be behind the polisher in one spot for 45 minutes!! Keep the temps down while correcting by wet sanding where you have more control. save time and be more precise fixing the defect!! CHEERS!!

Thanks for making it easier to understand by using the correct terminology. A lot of you tube videos feature so-called professionals referring to both the clear and base coat as the "paint". Maybe that is part of the lexicon amongst detailers, but can be extremely confusing to a beginner like myself when they say be careful not to sand thru the paint when they mean the clear.

Hi Brian. I have two DeFelsko gushes, the Positector DFT combo and the 6000 FNS3. As you mentioned, DeFelsko has an advanced model that is capable of measuring the thickness of each layer of film above the substrate. Initially, I was excited about the prospect of have this technology available to me; however, when I spoke to an engineering rep at the company, he explained that - at this time - the advanced model (with multi-layer capability is NOT reliable on automotive substrates.

Just a comment, Brian, and I'm sure you have experience with the vehicles or possibly the players... how many new cars, between their cargo ship / vehicle hauler / dealership "ooopsies" dings and scrapes get secretly repaired by body shops and the buyer has no clue. I always ask respectfully if work was done to the vehicle at any point, however, I work assuming it could be anywhere, and occasionally can spot it myself (the horrible sanding jobs beneath the clear). You're awesome, thanks for all

Thank you for the video. QQ, I have painted the wheels of my car and covered with a matte clear coat. The wheel feel a bit porous. So, after a weekend on the track the brake dust is well into the wheel. I have used multiple wheel cleaners (including Sonax) but the front wheels still have a good amount of brake dust in them. I have also tried brushes, a clay bar and nothing. I am at the point that I am thinking about doing some wet sanding to remove some of the clear coat and then just re-apply it (then I would apply some ceramic coating to avoid having this issues again). Thoughts?

I was wondering if I had to remove all the clear on a car if I want to fix it cosmetically. If the clear looks wet like on most of that panel does that mean it's healthy? I want to fix a 2008 Civic and I'll have to go to the metal for rust in certain spots - otherwise the clear looks wet for most of the car. Then I want to blend the clear in the panel and I heard I might have to clear the whole car to make it uniform and I'm thinking it's a good idea to add 1-2 clear coats for buffing/polishing to extend the car's life. Do you think it's a good idea or not?

I've filled a bunch of gravel rash on bottom of doors and quarter panels. I'm going to paint, and probably then clear coat the whole panel. I'm using a cheap electric DA simoniz polisher sanding and sanding with an interface pad and 800 grit. I think I'm done, then I look over it and IT'S STILL SHINY!!!!. (I can do about 3 square feet ok, but I thought the sanding pad would last longer. should I use a new pad every 2 square feet or so??)
Is some shine ok if I'm not blending as long as I know I've sanded it with 800 or does it have to be flat (no shine)???
I first tried with a coarse compound, but it just seems to be polishing it up, It doesn't take the shine off at all.

I used my rotary polisher the last time and it did it but I had other spots when I wet sanded that were down to bare metal but small spots. I should if used the orbital sander the last time instead of used the rotary to sand down my truck clearcoat but made a mistake and won't use a rotary to sand polisher to sand a spot.

It differs from car to car. Some of these newer cars come with less paint on them. 3 and half mils to 4. Especially on toyota and lexus cars. I honestly don't even like to wet sand when the paint is that thin. I've noticed alot of these older cars have more paint. It seems the car industry has decided to cut costs. I would like to try using a spare hood with not 3 mils of paint to see how long it would take to sand through the clear. That and I'd like to learn how to blend in touch up paint with car paint better

Usually when you wet sand any panel it will become hazy when it’s dry and you will see all the sanding marks. You should always buff out the sanded area with a rotary polisher, it will go back to normal again.

If you think it is safer to use a machine ( rotary or DA) that raise the surface temps by 40 degrees or more while doing the same thing as wet sanding on a slower pace... you are quite mistaken. You can hover over a scratch with a DA for 15-20 and raise the temps of the surface to 150+ ... or use 5000 or 3000 to correct that same spot in 7 minutes with only a degree or two in fluctuations in temps. Which do you think is harder in the clear? You are removing the same amount of clear to correct the blemish. Why not do it safely by colour sanding? Its because companies want you to buy a $500 machine and $30 compounds. Believe me.. after 24 years doing this his... I am aware of what the industry is up to. 😉
