- The Caterham Super Seven is one of the purest driving experiences legal on public roads. Jump in with me and experience the 1987 Super Seven with the Ford Kent 1700 Supersprint Crossflow engine. With a steeper cam, larger valves, and reworked carbs, this thing absolutely screams to redline while the 1350lbs chassis rockets along. Less is more.

I own an almost identical one but with a couple of tweaks (quaife ATB diff and 3D mapped ignition to bring the old xflow into the, er, 90s 😊). Used to race it - drive to events, take the tools out and stick the numbers on, check the tyre pressures and off you go. It was still competitive fifteen years ago against anything in the class. Not bad for a car designed in the fifties with a pushrod engine from the sixties and brakes of a Triumph Spitfire 😁. I loved your reaction and review - you really got across the sheer simple joy of driving one. If you get one you won’t regret it - they don’t depreciate, cost peanuts to run and you can fix most things yourself 👍 Go on, treat yourself!
Honest question, How did this compare to the morgan 3 wheeler?
AAGGHHHH. Motoring perfection!
I want to live in Vermont in a shack and drive this every day 😂

@@That_fella_named_J It's a 5 speed

Love your videos. Like that they don't focus on 0-60 times, HP and torque numbers, or all of the other stats. Your videos focus on the things that matter, how the car drives and what the experience is like. Loved to hear the joy in your voice when you were driving it and the viewer can tell it's just a blast. Thanks!

Oh my god that sound is fucking amazing. The note it makes when you give it some throttle, the pops and bangs when you lift off, the horn. It's just.. AAARGH. I NEED ONE!
It's pure, it's light, it's direct, it's open, it pops.
It's perfection!
"You might not like it, but this is how the definitive car looks!" - Me, right now.
I lost count how often i watched this. Such a lovely car, beautiful roads. Those downshifts!
Dude... this is unfair on so many levels... the weather you have is just amazing, I love beautiful fall days like that, unfortunately it's been raining in here for like a month straight. That car is one of my dream cars, cause A - it's light and B - it gives you so much unfiltered joy and raw experience that I think not many cars can match, C - I've driven one like 10 years ago and it stuck with me like a bad stench. And there is no traffic! And those roads! What the hell? There's traffic everywhere, where I live, and all the time.
Another great video, bless you man, you just made my Monday morning! Keep 'em comin'!
PS: the sound of that carbed and cammed 1.7... just wow
Do you know how much I would PAY to have rain here in Arizona for a month straight? It actually happened back in 2017. We had this horrendous June heatwave where it went up to 117 degrees. In July, I swear it rained everyday! It was incredibly satisfying.
@@Dcc357 well... that sucks too. It's been raining for months now here for a change and I'm freezing my ass off. Still waiting for that spring to start though :D
James may would approve
Mainly because it has a wind screen
This was so much fun to watch! Although it's a track-focused kit car, it looked like great fun on these beautiful New England backroads too. Your excitement made me smile throughout the video, thanks for the vicarious thrills!
Any time! Thanks for watching
Mine is track and autocross focused. You can also find them with conventional seat belts, softer suspension, and a couple more concessions to comfort. But personally, I am totally in love with this car as it is. I drove it from home to Lime Rock Park and home in a single day, 300+ miles in a day. I was surprised at how comfortable I was. The biggest issue was the exhaust noise. I should have brought some ear muffs!
it's a street car, not a track-focused kit car
There's a french company named Martin. They made replicas of numerous cars, one of them being the Super Seven which are more street focused than the original: the engine is less powerful but more torquey and smoother, the car is a bit heavier and wider for a more comfortable riding experience. The Martin Super Sevens were especially built to cruise around the winding countryside roads rather than zooming on a track at full speed. The driving feeling is quite similar to the Catheram, it just feels a bit more tamed.
This is the most fun I've had watching a video!! I'm serious.. I could feel the greatness of this. Definitely one of, if not the best POV driving video I've seen. I want this car now!!!
Woah! Thank you for this
I completely agree, Definitely my favourite by far
i know how you feel. i have a 1995 Caterham with 155 hp for 550kg and that's just addictive.
My left ear really enjoyed this video! haha
Thankful that I answer the phone on my right ear...Lefty is still recovering haha
The Dutch hand builders 'Donkervoort' also had a kitset 'Series111 Seven' which was millimeter perfect to the original Chapman blueprint plans, and the lowest volume ever Seven builder is an NZ constructor 'ESC' standing for Edgar Salwegter Cars, who worked for Donkervoort in Holland. He emigrated to NZ in 1986 bringing just ONE Donkervoort Series111 kit with him.
In 1988 he had completed the project and had constructed a WORLD ONE OFF Seven, using an Australian 3042cc Holden straight six engine with triple side-draughts and mated to a Celica 5 speed box and a Capri diff and rear axle set-up. The big six he blueprinted with a racing camshaft, a race head, and dynamic balancing, using a dry sump oil system to fit the big engine under the Seven's hood, with the addition of a smallish power bulge.
He named this car 'ESC1' and raced it for a while before selling it. It was an open top finished in white and black, with wide white 'Minilites' and big rubber.
The Koni suspension was reverted from 'Ackermann' for public roads. The thing looked and sounded amazing. It accelerated like a moon rocket on full thrust. It is sitting in my garage. I am too old and knackered to drive it anymore.
It's basically a 4 wheeled motorcycle. Absolutely brilliant.
If Caterham don't upload your video to their website then they don't deserve to ever sell another car. You brilliantly communicated just what the experience of driving one of these all about. And yes, they are awesome on the track having been an owner myself. Bravissimo Sir.
That leave coming into the cabin just gave a huge smile!.
I met the owner of this car at a show a while back. He told me about your channel and I decided to check it out. Now having watched a good amount of your videos, I'm subbing. Keep it up!
Thank you! He’s a great guy
I have an identical spec 2000 Caterham, but mine weighs in at 1180lbs (with clamshells, no less). You might want to throw this one back on the scales. I doubt it's 1350lbs.
Also, this is one of the best Caterham videos on YT. The sound is amazing and your downshifts are criiiiisp. I feel the same every time I drive mine on the backroads.
Great video. My 420R kit is arriving in about a month, I can't wait. Get one now before driving is illegal.

It was an honor and a privilege to share my own enthusiasm for the car with you and to have to do such a great job of showing how visceral an experience it is to drive my Caterham! It couldn't have been done better! All that is missing is having you show that you can put your flat palm on the road sitting in the seat without leaning over!
I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for the experience. Thank you for sharing your incredible toy. I hope you had a great autocross with it today! Maybe I even helped clear some carbon as preparation haha
@@TedwardDrives I did fine on the autocross in spite of the temperatures being in the 40s and 50s. My tires never warmed up, but there's no such thing as a bad autocross! I was actually surprised at how fast my final run was.

A friend of my dad owns a Lotus Catheram Super 7 and I had the change to have a ride with it, and even as the passenger its just amazing
One of the iconic cars
As a non-owner Caterham enthusiast (I actually drive a Miata and a "sensible" Volvo XC 90), I heartily agree that this car is IT. I've wanted one for YEARS -- ever since the first time I saw Patrick McGoohan's character driving a Lotus 7 in the opening scenes of "The Prisoner" TV series. I am passionately in love with this car. Alas, given the propensity of our local constabulary to hand out speeding tickets around these parts of North Carolina, I'd probably best set my sights on the 270 version with it smallest engine, which still offers respectable performance (0-100 kph in 5.0 sec.).
Great video, great car, lovely roads with beautiful autumn scenery. These were twelve minutes so well spent!
For a while I had a Westfield SEight with the 3.5 Rover V8: it was heavier and not as nimble as this one you're driving, but what it lacked it made up in torque and noise (it had side exhausts too). These are wonderful toys but they really need a proper road and decent traffic conditions to be enjoyed, not to mention a fair weather: it's great that you had all these conditions to film this video. I ended up trading mine for a Lotus Elise, which is definitely more civilized but also more usable.
The exhaust is very similar sounding to an old school JDM sport bike. Like a 70s Suzuki GS1000 or the Honda CB Fours
I can confirm this!
Agreed, it sounds very similar to my 72 cb.
I had a MGB I fitted with a tonneau cover half opened driving in the west Boulder mountains - alone at night. Thanks for the reminders. Thank you.
Funny how simplicity in motoring is perfection!
great video showing these cars as they are, thats why i own a 1980s super 7, great video
You know it's a good car and a proper video when Tedward: 1) Wears earmuffs to muffle the sound and; 2) Is nearly screaming when talking.
Loved this car since I saw the opening of the Prisoner way back in the '70's
so nice, to hear in your voice how much you enjoy this car, love it, i can feel it
I come back to this video at least twice a week. The energy that it provides and the way you expressed your happiness is in someway addicting. I wish I could ever fulfill my dreams the way you did. Thank you so much for this video!

I bought one of these last year. You’ve captured the essence of what driving these is all about. The hardest part of ownership is having it sat in the garage during the long winter months. Roll on Spring/Summer!

Oh the memories came flooding back - I used to have one - well the best kit copy I could afford with a fiat 2litre twin cam and twin 45 Weber’s. the exhaust back pops (flames), the gravel in the face on tight turns, the sensory overload... the connection, the mild initial claustrophobia wedged in feeling, you brought it all back. These POV vids are great , especially the sounds. This was as close to the real feeling of driving a 7 I’ve seen so hats off to you sir! I bet you feel the same watching back 👍

These are so cool! An absolute dream car of mine. One of the modern Seven 360’s would be perfect.
Great video. You accurately captured the true essence of the 7 type roadster. Driving at its purest undiluted form. I am currently building my 2nd 7 Type called the R10 from another small British company called Tiger Racing. Just like Caterham, it captures the raw driving experience and appeal. Finally, for me, the super 7 is the best of the Caterham 7 range both in terms of affordability and purest blend of power. I've been thinking about buying a caterham for a year or so.... watching your video has pushed me very close to the edge!! Awesome video thanks
You won't regret it. I loved mine and drove it all year round, even in snow and ice (with winter tyres on). It had sticky Yokohama A022 tyres for most of the year which gave plenty of confidence. You also have to learn to be smooth on the inputs... it's so direct and responsive, being hamfisted and treating the throttle as an on/off switch will get you in to trouble. Especially in the wet. Oh, and the full hood and weather kit is a pain to get on and off!
Makes me want one even more. Now to look in the ads!. Great video.
The engine sounds very good. It is just right. Not too loud and not brutal sounding. It has a tuned sound that I really like.
