- Join us as we look at Ivan Dutton's 1957 Series one Lotus 7 - Number 17
Watch as we strip the engine and put in a new prop shaft and take the car for a test drive..
The car has a Coventry Climax engine. Coventry Climax were involved in F1 at the time and won the World Championship. The engine in the Lotus is a 1.1L very light-weight aluminium engine that puts out a surprising amount of power, considering it was originally designed for a Fire Truck water pump!
Apologies for bad voice audio when driving. This will be sorted for the next videos...

I hope his grandson the cameraman knows how fortunate he is to have this guy for a grand dad.
Fastest Grandad in the world
Well, he grew up around cars such as that, and a lot of Bugattis, so, I think he's in good hands...
Lucky grandson, I had a similar grandfather
The Lotus 7 was my dad's car originally .. xx

-What is that sound on the street?!
-Nothing dear, just an old guy living his life...
Holy hell, the second gear pull on that is insane. Had me grinning from ear to ear. If you /do/ manage to get down to the south of France, you're more than welcome to come and stay with us on the way, we run a gite in the Alps, loads of wicked twisty roads to thrash about on round here.
What was very refreshing was seeing someone driving a performance car the way it's supposed to be driven, i.e with the pedal to the floor, but still being courteous and respectful of other road users. Might be a generational thing, that.
sort of glad youtube recommended this randomly
I’m more than glad it did and have only watched the first 4 minutes !
What a car !
@@davidfoster1762 yeah pretty good for 1950s
me too
Just subbed.
That was the best 30min i have spent i a long time. The sound of the straight cut gearbox. And the sound of a pair of DCO40s Webbers just awesome. I have just been taken back 45 years.
I'm taken back to 1968 when a pal arrived at my home in his new Cooper S. Off we went, so fast that I felt as though I was going through the seat. In 20 minutes we had travelled 20 miles across Sydney, not something you could do nowadays, of course.
This man is a legend.
The way he is shifting gears in a 1957 car is unbelievable.
Another half-hour of automotive gold. This video incorporates a charming unrehearsed presentation style with wonderful analogue engineering skills, unique and personal historical references and a road test that bears testament to not only the experience and skill of a remarkable driver but also the genius of the original Lotus design.
absolutely...
Simon G you nailed it mate. My favourite Ivan content so far :)
Proper old bloke with a proper old car! This is excellent! Very inspirational. Thanks for posting.
Not many of the younger generations could change gear like that
This is the first time, in a very, very long time, that something on the internet has made me beam! Sat with a s**t eating grin on my face the whole way through!
"In 1957 This must've been fantastic", sir, this looks fantastic now, this concert of engine and gearbox, what a symphony. The voice is low but the engine is perfect, for me, no changes are necessary.
my eldest brother still has his Lotus 7 which he built from kit in the early 1960's and is among the first 100 to be produced. Sadly he is now getting old and can longer get in and it hasn't been driven for quite a while. I remember going in it when I was I was small and it only had aircraft style half moon windscreens to begin with. He raced it in the late 60's and early 70's and was restored in the late 90's. Great fun
I hope it stays in the family.
God , I like this guy. 80 yrs young and still pouring the beans to her like that. Yes sir I like this guy.
That Lotus is a beast. You were driving it like you stole it. I have owned a Harley a Triumph and a 1916 Henderson cutoff engine that ran. I tinker in my small machine shop everyday but never had any projects as cool as yours. Wish I could be your apprentice. God Bless Us All.
Can’t imagine picking that up in 1957 must have felt it was a rocket ..
I have found a new hero just the sound of that Lotus amazing.
It really sounds like more than 4 cylinders.
I love it! "You've got to be a bit sensible". "Only took it to 5000 RPM". Screams along country lane like a guided missile!
Some times CZcams gets its algorithm just right. What a amazing story on a car and a mans history with it.
“Nanny where’s Grandad”? “Oh, he’s just popped out for a Sunday poodle in his silly little car darling”
How I wished I lived in England! I would beg this Gent to teach me everything He knows, so I could teach future generations. Ivan reminds Me of my Grand dad, who taught Me a lot about Electrical wiring, outlets and switches, Etc. To this day, I can replace a broken outlet or switch, or replace a light fixture or ceiling fan, and do it right. Great channel1 Thank You for sharing your time.
I owned a couple of caterhams back in the late '80s. I used to commute into London every day in one, and started my racing career in other. But wow, back in the 50s these cars must have been untouchable on the road.
"got to sensible on the road" HA HA you looked like you were driving it like you stole it, you young hooligan! Great video, can't wait for your Brands Hatch video
He only took it to 5? I clearly saw 7 or 8 while he was thrashing its pants, excellent stuff!
Had me sitting on the edge of my seat!
Long live us senile delinquents!
Wow Just Wow a brilliant engineer and driver.
I love cars like this, open top racers. When I was younger I was obsessed with Early 60s F1, but 1962 to be exact. Other kids where talking about about Micheal Schumacher and Coulthard but not me. I was obsessed so much I wanted to build one. My dad soon caught on. We ended up building a small go-kart size almost replica of a 1962 Lotus. Of course it wasn't good but I had a lot of memories making that, of course I didn't do anything hard like welding but helped with other things. My dad machined a 3- speed gearbox, (One revers and two forward gears). We used a 30cc motorbike engine up to 3,500 rpm. We went to open fields and closed road spaces and things like that. I don't know where it is now, it dissapeared just before we moved house, my dad denise knowing anything and says that the Police came and took it, but I think he sold it. I was It took us a whole year to make it, we used parts from the scrap yards so it wasn't all brand new. But the memories is what counts realy, this video sort of reminds me of that.
Age shall not weary him. Thank you SIR.
I don't know why the road test bit has not went viral that cars nuts!
Love all of Ivan’s videos. In this one, his description of how the driveshaft was trying to come through the shaft tunnel at Brands Hatch brought back memories of when just before Christmas many years ago, my 72 Capri 2600 rear shaft coupling was on its way out and I was hoping I could make it home before it let loose. Well I 😂didn’t, and there I was about 3 miles from
home, and it was snowing to boot. Called AAA for a tow service and had it flatbedded home. As we pulled into the neighborhood with the wrecker, the streets were all lit up for Luminaria like an airport runway with cables burning in paper bags about every 6 feet, and everyone out Christmas Caroling in the streets to welcome us back in. Wish I had a video of it.
Ivan is an absolute joy to watch and listen to, he has a huge wealth of motor engineering experience, he has a very engaging manner in his videos and is supported by a gentleman with all the machinist and skills to complement Ivan.
Such a down to earth style that will go down well with those who love good old fashioned motor engineering
Decades of experience, thousands of special parts - fantastically irreplaceable 👍
What a brilliant video. I'm a fan of Ivan's Shed.
Magic 😊 Wonderful sound of a Coventry Climax with Webers. 😊👍
I love this car. What a top bloke!
What a cracking channel. As an older mechanic I am fully embedded in this workshop, loving it. Ivan and his team are bloody brilliant.
same here. i've been devouring vids on old sportscars with daydreams of cobbling together a junkyard dog of my own. nowhere near ivan's level of expertise or resources but even so......
“Climax?”... absolutely
What a kick ! Watching this "senior" (that's ok, I'm 74), revving this beauty up to racing speeds. The sound ! Music, lovely music. A gorgeous car, the Lotus 7. I'd love to have one myself, with that same setup. Thanks for one of the best half hours (well, a bit longer. I had to watch it again from 16:00) I've ever spent .
Some how you still have people who thumbs down this type of content. Who would do that? Fantastic video - the type of person that exemplify's what was great about Great Britain.
Do the Brands or Mallory session, pretty please :) My mate Jim owns an original Lotus Elise with the MGF engine. His uncle was the Worth in Cosworth. I have just sent him a link to this. What an amazing car, two years older than myself and capable of that kind of performance. How very wonderful. Thank you for this. I really appreciate all of it and your channel very much. Literally delicious for someone like me.
In 15 years I will look like your twin, and if I am living half the life you have, I will be a happy man.
Wish I had your knowledge. Your an inspiration sir.
Thank you.
What a treat to POV that ride in that fantastic machine. Many thanks. 63 in the US.
Gees what a lovely old man..all the skills and knowledge just pour out of him. Charming and that lovely accent, maybe from a bygone age.
Loved the car, loved the content, and ..... the icing on the cake was the respectfully wide and slow pass given to that lone cyclist at 24:30. Excellent all round!
Great video and great drive. As a petrolhead and cyclist it's nice to see how a truly good driver tolerates other road users and understands why they might be doing what they are doing. And you wouldn't say he's a boring driver.
Man that test drive! Nnngghhh!! I would be really scare by the aceleration and speed and gramps didnt even flinch, what a madlad! And the sound of the engine and the straight cut gears!! And the gear selector just goes click-click-click like is was guided
he isn't afraid to drive it! car sounds great
So that’s where Jean Luc Picard has been! Brilliant work! Great down to earth film. That engine sounds amazing “Hopefully I can rev my Mini Cooper s like a loony and it won’t go wrong!” 👌
You are right, now you mention it, the resemblance is close. Minus the Miami vice tache and beardy bits that is.
Wow, what a fantastic restoration. The car looks and sounds amazing. As a former Caterham 7 owner, I can only guess how good that car feels. You're also the kind of attentive, thoughtful driver we need more of. Slow and careful where you need to be, fast when it is safe and vision permits. Driving 'raw' cars like this really puts you in touch with the car and the road. Looking forward to seeing more of her on track.
What a legend Mr Ivan is, how he uses the gearbox as an engine brake. It’s wonderful to see he hasn’t lost the need for speed. I hope I’m still able to drive like this when I’m his age. Kudos to you sir 👏👏👏👏👏
Haha, I'm 72 and still have my "need for speed" whether on my motorbike or in my home built car.

I’m almost seventy & still driving my V8 Hotrod. Gave the bikes up a few years ago after a bad accident. In my head, I’m still seventeen. Enjoy your bike 👍.
Ivan the type of bloke who's knowledge is pure gold, I can listen to people with passion for what they enjoy all day long. Keep up the great work
What a fabulous little screamer of a car. Well driven too- great to see a 'proper' old boy giving it the full chat.
Just discovered this channel, and it's almost too good to be true. Nothing like this anywhere else. Bravo Ivan, thank you for sharing these wondrous old pieces of esoterica in such detail and with such enthusiasm.
Mustie1 is good . Well worth checking out . Also the doghouse is good too . Relaxing viewing
@@tazpoochie I'll check them out, thanks
Stunning car & what a truly super seven it is! People really under estimate the Lotus philosophy & what a true benchmark of ANY sportscar the 7 is. With discs & a de Dion, this spec is not far from today’s Caterham +60 years later. Thanks for a great film & sharing.
This old man is a savage behind the wheel ! The older people I drive behind don't know about the accelerator
Awesome in car footage(got to love a straight cut gearbox)-Takes me back-My Dad built Lotus 7 in 1958- eventually with a 1340cc Ford engine. Had a second one in 1964 (ex hillclimbcar with a triumph TR4 engine)All before I was born '68.When I was 17 he then bought a series 4 big valve headed 7.
I’ve been steered towards an automotive enthusiast, mechanic, historian, and gear jamming racer-this is going to be a fun ride!
This is why the Web is important.
Knowledge like this has tremendous value. Ivan, you're bloody amazing mate.
What a fabulous car.. I used to compete in club motorsport back in the late 60s, early 70s with an S2.. this brought back a lot of memories. I did think of getting back into a level of Classic competition work now that I'm ' retired.. problem with being retired is that even if I could afford to race it, I can't afford to shunt it !
Proper Lotus 7, wires, skinny tyres, light weight............class....... its not how fast its how much fun......Ivans channel subscribed.
Now I began realizing what can be "the real Lotus 7" ...
Catherham are Nescafé I think :D
Brakes : this original car seems light, "minimalist" may I say?
Looking at the disks : supposing the constant fresh air flow in their large room and the big diameter of the rear ones with such a light car, they can make it, I think!
Just spent half an hour absolutely fascinated what a fantastic watch can’t wait to see more !
Oh my, that gear change! Can tell just by the sounds it’s making that it’s crisp and sweet - rewarding to a skilled and sympathetic driver such as yourself.
How sharp is the gearbox and throttle response is amazing ! In 1957, it should be an ufo !
My father, Jack Field will have sold this car, most likely in kit form. The chassis were made in one of the gardens of a house across the street from the Tottenham site (now Jewsons builders merchants). The Lotus Tottenham factory site has been made a historic site, Colin Chapmans desk is still in his upstairs office, my mother worked in the office below as the receptionist. Thanks for sharing, Michael
Ahh, the Lotus 7, the first 'kit car's gotta love them, and as always Ivan is the man
Oh I don't know why anyone wouldn't adore that gearbox.
Oh that sound of gears and intake.
That was a fun rush.
Thanks
This is a wonderful video that really brings the early 7 to life, and we can see how revolutionary it must have been in its day. It still looks like a good performer now.
You can see the Hillman Imp lineage in the engine. They were beautifully built, the Coventry Climax engines.
What a fascinating half hours watch, such a lovely example of a car beautifully restored. Great fun experiencing the Lotus getting thrashed through those narrow country lanes.
Good work, nice video.
Fantastic how this car revs up!
what a car, what a sound:) And I love that he is not cuddling that engine at all. Well done Ivan!
Absolute Gold! Loved watching every minute. I don't know who was better, the old man or the Lotus 7.
my god that little thing sounds glorious
That climax engine is a little beauty ,thanks ivan.
A great sport's car...... Lost for any more... Words. Really *. Many thanks*
A proper test drive.
An good to hear you saying all those sensible things about other road users. I thoroughly agree there are people driving far too quickly on country roads with no idea what's around the next bend, who think modern engineering works by magic not physics - or else they're psychopaths.
Lovely video.
Beautiful car. Brought back loads of memories of my Dad taking me to Silverstone in the early 60s and, more recently, of marshalling at historic meetings. The sound of a Coventry Climax at full chat is something else and must be marvellous in a 7. Closest I've got is hiring a Caterham and that was great fun. Thanks for a terrific video.
I've only driven a Lotus 7 once, in the early 70s, and I'll never forget it - the acceleration was like a kick in the back! Great video!
I first saw a write up of the Lotus 7 in about 1963 (Autocar, I think) and wanted one ever afterwards. Finally got the chance in 2005 and built a Caterham Classic in bare ali with the 1400 K series and 5 speed box having never even sat in one before I ordered it (I didn't want to spoil the moment of driving the car I'd built for the first time). A total joy to build and the building makes the car yours in a way nothing else can. I am planning to get it out on the road again once we are allowed out again. This has given me a bit of a push to get started on it. Thanks.
Now that is what driving and owning such cars is all about. Forget the "Top Gear" rubbish, took me back sixty years in a flash. Time now to break out my Riley for a run. Superb channel.
Fantastic to see a real one. What an amazing car
What a beautiful and fun car, love the sound of it! More videos please!
Quel moteur, et cette boite courte... j'ai encore des frissons !!! Bravo gentlemans !
What a guy! Still giving it the beans and enjoying sports cars at that age.
Reminds me of my dad
Need more of these type of chaps, genuinely lovely guys.
Thanks for the ride along, almost felt like I was driving it myself! What a gem of a car!
Beautiful car, and an absolute credit to you. Love the chronometric tachometer!
The sound took me back. In 1974 I had a Lotus Elite with the Coventry Climax FWE engine. I wish I'd kept it.
You're a treasure, Ivan.
You Sir are a national treasure. never stop!
I've watched a few test drive videos on YT and that had to be one of the most exiting of them all.
The Lotus 7 a true "balls out" bare little race car, I remember them at hillclimbs and sprints in the '60's when motorsport was "great"...
In 1957 it was gold?...IT IS STILL GOLD!
Whew.... it sure gets up and goes! Never mind for 1957 - this is startling and exhilirating now! Great fun....
what a delight i just saw! unforgettable video
now i crave Super 7!
this gentleman is a giant in what he does.
long happy healthy years to The Man
I absolutely love this video. "Old Grandad" having so much fun in his later years. I wish I was there sitting beside him.
It is obvious that you have been a racing driver. What a cracking little car. Greetings from OZ.
I've owened a replica. But the drive with this Gentleman with the beautiful sounding engine and whining gears was just as satisfying!
While he was driving i put the video on full screen and sat way up to it with headphones on and it almost felt like i was ridding in a back seat.. Wonderful!!! sounds fantastic too..
Ivan is a very charming man and the way he goes about looking for a certain part that he wants is really quite funny or amusing because he does not find what he is looking for but he tells you that this part goes to this or that car and also what year as well. My advice to him is that he has to put is car parts in sections so that he can find what he is looking for much faster and a whole lot less confusion for him. Ivan, you are a lot fun to watch and to listen to and you remind me of someone from the former comedy troupe Beyond the Fringe from the 1960's. Keep up the good work Ivan, you are doing a great job and take care.
Being on the wrong side of the pnd I have heard of and seen the 7 but never saw it in action!!! WOQ!!! New sub for that drive!
Wow that ride was great😊 loved the sound. I would like to see Code Masters Sim racing for Ps4 develop historical cars for their gaming systems. We need to learn more about these cars. Your a great Professor and driver.
The CC engine had to be light because it would be hand carried by 2 firemen to where it was needed I think the whole thing weighed in at 180 pounds it was also used in fork lifts and the Hillman Imp.
That looks like a fun car to drive........Thanks for sharing, Now I want one.
This is a marvellous channel, the best on CZcams. I've seen your ads in C&S many times but how nice to put a face with the name. Fantastic job Ivan. You should be Knighted!
