Marvel treats the MCU like a huge program, with each movie as a project. Kevin Feige is the program manager, and each director is the project manager of that movie. The program has organization, long term planning, and short term planning. Because they have everything so meticulously planned, they are able to change plans quickly with less negative results. Two additional keys to success is if something is a miss in the MCU, they don't over-correct; they don't over react. They stick to the plan. In addition, the are better at keeping secrets. So if something isn't going right, we don't hear about it. They also don't announce things too early.
DC doesn't seem to have any of that. It seems there is a lack of communication, a lack of confidence, maybe even no real long term story planning. I don't know.
    Anyway, that's just my take.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The other thing Marvel does is keep the characters' core traits and values intact. I admire DC/WB for going against the grain with Man of Steel and BvS (I like them both), but it's obvious the fans want their traditional superheroes to still be traditional, just inserted into modern day stories. That's probably why Wonder Woman did so well. She was pretty much the same character from the comics.

It's kind of hard to blame the marketing when the movie was going through so many reshoots and re-edits. It's not the marketing team's fault that they got rid of the whole "unite the seven" thing. It's not the marketing team's fault that the movie was supposed to be dark but then they decided to make it lighter with reshoots. It's not the marketing team's fault that they didn't know what they can put in the trailers because they had no idea what would be cut.

The WB execs are definitely to blame. They didn't have a plan in the first place. They only listened to the most superficial criticisms rather than the more in-depth ones. And they tried to fix things without giving the people working on the movie enough time.
But because they're executives, they have enough people working below them that they can throw under the bus to take the blame for them.

    • @MetallicA7X92
      @MetallicA7X92 Před 6 lety +3

All of those things are the marketing departments job though... They need to be able to pivot to sudden changes in the production.
And the posters they ran with where they use all the logos just looks horrible! It looks like something a DC fan draws on a piece of paper in his high school class xD Just as messy as the movie itself.

DC Rushed it's universe.. they so badly wanted to make Avengers money, but it wasn't earned. They didn't earn fan belief, they didn't earn the line up, their DCU films feel like 'we want to make the money Avengers make, we have characters that are good too'. They made the mistake that many studios make. Money first, quality later.

MoS was riding on Christopher Nolan's success with the TDK trilogy. BvS featured the first ever big screen encounter between the two title characters. SS was the first supervillain team-up flick and also reintroduces the Joker after Heath Ledger's iconic performance. WW was the rare big-budget superheroine movie from a well-received character in BvS. What does JL have that's new? A bunch of characters that most moviegoers have yet to be introduced to.

The reason these DC movies are not doing that well is 100% the re-imagining of the characters. There is an older generation that grew up on the comic books and a mid generation that grew up on the animation. Dark and gritty was just hands down the wrong way to go. Also, stop thinking that Wonder woman would elevate this one. Different director, different storyline. What hurt Justice league was BVS.

The problem with the marketing is that they and the DC heads don’t realise that Superman is their ace card. He should’ve been all over these posters & all up in these trailers.
He’s the most recognisable, archetypical, worldwide & oldest superhero of all time.
There is no way BvS & Suicide Squad would have got the audience it got without its marketing.

I'm not saying Cars 3 was a masterpiece and I fully expect Coco to be better, but that definitely doesn't make Cars 3 a bad movie whatsoever. The character development in Cars 3 was well done and you really understood the sense of fear that Lightning had of losing something that had been so dear to him for so many years. Cars 3 isn't a top 10 Pixar movie by any stretch, but I liked it more than quite a few other Pixar movies like (Cars 2, The Good Dinosaur, Monsters University, Brave, and yes even Finding Dory). It definitely is the most mature of the Cars films and had themes and issues that might have gone over kids heads, but it was a solid movie that I would personally give an 8 out of 10.

Sorry, but everything bad in this movie has Joss Whedon's thumbprints all over it.
      - Bad CGI (really the studio's fault though for giving him an impossible deadline)
      - Lame and inappropriate humour shoehorned in
      - Poor ending (Joss replaced the original)
      - Cavill's lip (All Superman's scenes were re-shoots done by Joss)
      - The cheesy soundtrack that belongs in a cartoon (Whedon fired Junkie XL and brought in Elfman). All the raw power and gravitas of Zimmer's score was stripped away.
I won't blame him too much for the poor storytelling and lack of character development, because that was the studio's doing when they mandated Whedon to cut Snyder's movie literally in half.

This is a disappointment for the Justice League, we shall see how it does in the upcoming weeks but I don't think it will make enough money to satisfy Warner Bros. And even though it has better word of mouth then BvS it still doesn't have good word of mouth if anything it's mixed. It's sad because Warner Bros could of had something special with the DCEU but from the beginning everything was just so rushed. Marvel was smart and they took their time with their cinematic universe. They made movies that not only pleased die hard comic book fans but also the general audience. They let people fall in love with their characters over time so that we cared what happens to them. Also their movies are just so enjoyable and fun to watch just look at Thor: Ragnarok. I had such a good time watching that movie and I'm not even that big of a Thor fan.

3 simple easy reasons why JL did not do well. 1. The 65% female audience that went to see Wonder Woman were NOT going to see JL. These women didn't want to see a movie where 5 men and only 1 woman are superheroes. Having WW playing second fiddle to Batman and Superman. 2. DC has a bad track record in general for their previous movies. They have been limping along to this point. People kept saying "...but wait till JL comes out....". Now it is out and the movie is considered 'ok'. ( JL opening LAST of ALL the DCEU films proves this)3. JL just had a horrible misfortune all around. Zack leaving (plus the news Zack making the movie in the first place). Ben Affleck not doing great promotion for the film, plus the word getting out that he is leaving the DCEU. The word that possibly 60 percent of the movie had to be re-shot did not help either.

The main “hurt” for Justice League’s box office was self-inflicted: WB imposed an embargo on reviews until literally the day before the release. If the reviews had been made public the weekend before the movie was released it would have raised more awareness of the movie’s impending release (required due to the proximity of the Thor movie); and the mixed reviews would have obliquely stirred some audience curiosity. The other killer was leaving Superman’s presence in the movie out of the bulk of the marketing. A JL without Superman just doesn’t make sense to the general public - especially considering the downer of the ending of “Batman v Superman”.

If it was a massive failure, Warner Brothers would shrug it off and write the loss off on their taxes, probably cut a few future comic book movies from the production schedule. This middle of the road opening is a bit worse for us fans. We know the executives will do something to ensure the most profitable movies go ahead, but a low profit 'Justic League' means they aren't certain what their core audience will now give full support. In some ways this is not as good as failing, because after all the hype and build up to this point in this DCeU, 'Justice League' should have been... much more dramatic (bigger in one way or another).

I liked W. woman even if I knew nothing about the character and wasn't attached to it from the start. I think the director was simply more talented, it looked good the historical setting was a great touch. Having said that, I remember in my country a lot of female members in the audience (more than usual) and I think the real extra push at the box office came from the fact that it had a sort of 'pro-feminist' aura (not saying this in a negative way at all, just a supposition), almost like a cult movie behind which people rallied. Other superhero movies might lack this 'x factor'.

Well, movies usually only make half what they made opening weekend in the 2nd weekend. So JL made 94 million this past weekend. So reasoning would suggest it most likely will make half that this upcoming weekend. But let's be conservative and add 10 million to it. So my guess it'll make around 55-60 million this weekend.
And the family friendly Pixar film Coco comes out this weekend......and it's currently sitting at 94% on RT. All Coco has to do is get above 60 million and it'll beat JL this weekend.
OMFG!!!!! Wouldn't that be friggin hilarious? JL getting beat in the 2nd weekend by Coco.....man, lol. DC fans will start screaming bloody murder: "Noooooo!!!!!!!!! Those figures are wrong!!!!! JL made more money!!!!! JL won the 2nd weekend box office!!!!"

Unlike what they said in the video the main target audience warner brothers were aiming for with this movie were families of 3 to 4. Thats the main target audience that go put to see superhero movie, not the fans, fans only make up a small portion ( in comparison)of people seeing these movies. Sure there were exceptions with dead pool and logan but those films only had a FRACTION of what JL had. So yeah i also do expect coco to demolish JL

There were some flaws but there were also some good stuff with the movie. One thing I enjoyed was the pacing, it didn't move to slow or to fast. Although there were good or great parts of the movie I didn't feel like all of the jokes landed. After the hilarious movie of Thor Ragnarok this movies jokes felt a little bit disappointing.
