Avengers: Endgame Becomes All-Time #1 Global Grosser | Charting with Dan!
Host/Writer: Dan Murrell
Featuring: Lon Harris
Assistant Editor: Emin Bassavand
Kevin Feige: "if you adjust for Inflation, Avatar is still the biggest movie of all time"
Gone With the Wind: "Am I a joke to you?"
They’ve made a mention about how those types don’t really count against modern movies, mainly because they would stay in theatres for years at a time, due to less competition.
Those old movies would have had a lot less competition for adjusted inflation, both from less movies made and the insane rise in inflation.
When you count * total tickets sold* Avatar and Endgame each sold more tickets overall than GWTW, and sold them in a shorter period of time.
@@cjwrench07 I did not know the "butts in seats" statistic, thanks!
@@cjwrench07 Also back in the day: No VHS no cable TV. But lots of tickets sold at much lower prices.
Star Wars was in theaters for a few years also back in the late 70s
Gone with the Wind is #1 adjusted to inflation while Avatar is #15 with Endgame behind it at a healthy distance
My first thought was Gone With the Wind as well, but Box Office Mojo has their adjusted Gross at $1.822 Billion almost $1 Billion less than End Game's WORLDWIDE gross. Box Office Mojo doesn't offer adjusted worldwide grosses, as Dan noted, because that's too difficult to calculate given the multitude of currencies and countries. But I don't know that unadjusted box office numbers are available for GWTW outside of North America. Remember too, international receipts weren't a major revenue source for the studios 80 years ago. It's adjusted international numbers might not be enough to get it to # 1. But without those numbers, it's Avatar by default.
Recipe for a highest grossing movie of all time:
1) Invite Zoe Saldana
2) Paint her full body in any color
3) Profit
so star trek really should have painted her red instead of putting her in a red shirt?
Cats should hire her and have her play an orange tabby cat then.
@@mk6rfc1 I think if jj makes next Star trek maybe he'll do it
“Six of the top five films...”
Oh, Dan. I love a good line.
At this rate, I'd have believed Disney could beat math.
Lol I think poor Dan’s brain might still be a little fried from the unrelenting combo of Comicon + travel. 😂
Whizkidd2025 I missed that!
Avengers fans, this is the charting with Dan we've been waiting for. We did it, high fives all around!!!
Peter Son we can rest now
until avatar is re released for its 10th birthday lol
this war will go on for 20 years lol
Mikey Wikey Q the porch music
Finally the news of Avengers: Endgame beating Avatar was a relief. What a journey the MCU has had since it's inception back in 2008 with Iron Man launching the cinematic universe.
Raghu Seetharaman 🙌🏼
Endgame reached 2billion in 2 weeks. Avatar hit 2 billion in 7months.
I think thats a very definition of beating. 👍
Avatar hit 2 billion in 47 days, that's not 7 months. That's a month.
@@SeriousStriker no theres a legit chart.. They didnt hit 2 billion in a loooong longgg months
@@shabrinaz9877 6 weeks it took for endgame to hit 2 billion
It's okay, guys. Really. It's time.
Rename the show "Disney with Dan".
That's about right)
He can't do anything, Disney is doing so fine that it becomes the main topic every week.
At this point he could just cut over to a clip of Scrooge McDuck swimming in money each week instead of going over actual numbers.
Or at least "A LonDan Thing"
It's not his fault that Disney is killing at the box offices, what do you want him to do? just skip all Disney movies? LOL
I don't understand the notion of "long slow crawl" if Avatar took a year to get that number while Endgame took only 3 months
Good point.
the point was the re-released it back in theatres. when it was close to beating avatar. But since they didn't add anything special it was harder to get people into theatres to watch it again so it crawled to the top.
They mean ppl thought after 1 week with 1.2 billion ppl thought it would be done by say week 4-5 not 3 months later
Because some are stupid.
Gilbert Jacobs avatar re released 3 times
Perfect timing..just finished today's SJU-so happy seeing Joe,Spencer,Roth and Dan all together again. And now Dan with an assist from Lon for charting. My crappy day has been transformed into happiness.
Endgame got to its total 20 weeks faster than Avatar did... sounds like a sprint to me
Yh some ppl are dumb....as dumb as the adjusted for inflation folks.
sprint vs marathon
@@danbh84 Except it's covering the same distance, so the sprint of Endgame is far more impressive (especially without the drastically inflated ticket prices of Avatar's 3D)
I'd say since Endgame was WAY more frontloaded than Avatar it did feel like a crawl. Endgame made over a billion dollars in a matter of days but then took weeks to barely scratch a few million dollars together to surpass Avatar, which was consistently making money for months and months.
Movies DON'T get months and months to scrape money together these days
Dan we do not deserve you. You go from Comic Con working all weekend to watching a movie to review for us, to SJU and then to Charting. Dan you are doing the Nerd Lords work.
Honestly, how the hell did he find the time to make all the charts! Dan is the best.
It's funny that Avatar is the highest internationally, Star Wars TFA is the highest domestically, and Endgame the highest worldwide.
Aliens sell.
Thanks - I was waiting for this show all day
You misspelled "Gotti" in the title.
BattleUp Saber 😂😂
I think y’all should do a comic con honest trailer
Overcrowded commercial nightmare.
THIS
Youngster Joey Videos They do comic con trailer every year at comic con. If you attend their comic con panel, they show the honest trailer for comic con
We do one each year but show it as a special live panel only thing at the con
Fandom Entertainment oh cool! I knew y’all did an honest trailer there but I thought it was just the next weeks trailer. Thanks for the reply!!
I thought you were going to be counting down to Cats ala The Meg.
That may start next week, since they were already a day late this week.
I hope they start that next week. That movie looks insane.
Somehow, when the intro started, and Dan said "Good Tuesday afternoon/evening, welcome to Charting with Dan. I am Dan--" my brain just naturally expected him to turn to Lon and say "and this is Charting" lol
Endgame breaking records, Feige gave him a shoutout, and a new thrilling Star Trek Trailer. Dan is living his version of heaven.
When did Kevin Feige shoutout Dan? That’s awesome
Steve Urkel you have a link/evidence for when Feige shouted out Dan?
cisco_content .
cisco_content It was a joke. Feige said if you adjust for inflation Avatar still outgrossed Endgame. Dan joked that Feige watches “Charting.”
When I watched the first charting with Dan I was like 🤷🏽♀️ I don’t care that much about this stuff but is Screen Junkies.
And now... (me on Monday) where’s Charting?! 😭I *need* to know how Lion King is doing 😩
(Thanks Dan and Lon great show!!)
Disney beat Disney! (Not adjusted for inflation of course) Thanks for the Charting, Dan and Lon!
Dan Schoening inflation doesn’t exist
@@masonwright7700 Tell that to my accountant, lol. BTW, Stripes is an awesome movie. One of my favs.
5 of the last 6 movies released in the MCU will have grossed at least a billion dollars (pending on Spiderman). That means 5 of the 9 MCU movies to cross the billion dollar mark have been released within the last 2 years. That's how strong the MCU is.
MCU has 5 of the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time, and a fully loaded clip, ready to fire... Phase IIII
LightS4bre Star Wars has 9 of the highest grossing movies ever if you add inflation.
@@ggamesgarner8027 Yes and Gone With The Wind will NEVER be touched, adjusted for inflation..but back then, they didn't have things like the internet, Computers, televisions, home air conditioners..etc. - so there was MUCH less competition from other entertainment sources.. Movies or Radio.. take your pick. Another reason Inflation adjusted charts are referenced, but are not the box office standard is they ONLY count domestic box office and not only does currency exchange rates change over time, so does the entire entertainment landscape. There was no Netflix in 79' .. you coudnt pirate and watch StarWars for free in 79. Know what the most successful movie franchise in the entire history of film is?.. give you a hint.. Groot is 1 of the characters in it.
Dan, you must be so relieved to be able to announce that so you can be done with it.
The thing is though, the rest of the top 5 deserve to be there. Avatar realistically should have a been a 600M summer blockbuster and no more. The quality was NOT even close to its earnings.
3D was more expensive when Avatar was released. i remember paying 15 bucks a ticket and now theyre around 12 in my hometown
Yeah keep talking bud, you can eat your heart out now 😂
It does my heart good to see That neither of the amazing Spider-Man movies are in the top 5 grossing
I was really excited for this episode lmao
I would argue that Skyfall isn’t really a Sony film because while they did provide some funding, they only handled the theatrical distribution for MGM.
could essentialy say the same for spidey then since whilst sony can say "why not this" but marvel basically make the movie for them and then sony advertise and distribute it
Sony are great at getting other studios to make their movies for them, and make them better than they ever could.
MGM is owned by a holding company, MGM Holdings Inc. which was co-founded by Sony. The current ownership situation seems pretty muddled. As far as I know Sony has no stake in it anymore but I guess the distribution deal is left over from then.
Just my luck that my weekly dosage of Charting would be uploaded right before my shower. Oh well, nothing says relaxation like Dan Murrell's number talk and pajamas.
I'm watching while my kid is playing with his Jaws toy in the bath haha
Chris Bedard you're raising a baby Dan :0
Yea!!! Been waiting all afternoon! I appreciate people who know the word esoteric AND can use it correctly in a sentence. Well done, you!
Lon: "They're doing alright". This had my Dad & me laughing so hard, we had to pause & rewind. Hilarious!
Tickets for 3d back in 2009 at my local theater were more expensive than now.
Been refreshing the Fandom Entertainment page for hours lolol
Thank you for your patience!
Nice that you discussed foreign films and subtitled films. As someone from Europe who watches all U.S. movies in original voiceover with subs (well I don't even need subs anymore as I understand English fairly well), it amuses me that people whose first language is English refuse to even "come close" to other languages.
3D, in my opinion, accounts for the inflation. It's probably not too much of an exaggeration to say that most of the viewings of Avatar were in 3D, which obviously brought ticket prices up.
Titanic is also the longest of those top-5 grossing films. Let us not forget that Titanic is a 195 minute film, so it couldn't play as many times per day.
Endgame: 182 minutes
Avatar: 162 minutes
Titanic: 195 minutes
Force Awakens: 135 minutes
Infinity War: 160 minutes
That's why how Titanic was able to make all that money is far more impressive than any movie. Titanic came out when:
1) movie tickets weren't even $10 yet
2) was like 3hr 20 mins long
3) they weren't that much theaters back then compare to now
4) and was a standalone film, it had nothing to back it up, no hype, it had NO prequels in order to build a foundation on.
Yeah to answer Lon’s Chinese movie question: I’ve never been a big fan of dubbed or subtitled movies. But after seeming the trailer, I would definitely have gone and seen The Wandering Earth in the theater. And after seeing it on Netflix I wouldn’t have regretted the decision at all. I still think there are some cultural point of reference issues, such a foreign films that require a deep understanding of the countries culture or history to fully appreciate. But big box office spectacles yea I think we’ll get there some day.
I've never been more excited to see a 'Charting with Dan' video before.
Avatars record is gone with the wind
HEYO!
Hey Lon, way better with connecting with the camera and looking at Dan, rather than the monitor. Killing it!
Lon: "That's weird." *stares at camera*
We LOVE David Harbour! He is going to get in as much trouble as Tom Holland & Mark Ruffalo.
"Are you stupid?!" IM CHOKING!!! 😂😂😂
You don't want more people to hear about "Hell Boy" before they see it. 😂😂😂
Harbour seems like a big child and there's just something really appealing about a big goofy silly person who happens to be middle-aged.
Avatar is the second highest grossing movie of all time, adjusted for inflation, neither Avatar or Avengers Endgame could pass Gone With The Wind, but the title "Highest Grossing Film Of All Time" does have a nice ring to it. CONGRATS to Avengers Endgame!!!
I'm always excited for a new episode of Charting, but this one specifically more.
The more impressive part about Endgame is that, Endgame made that much money with a MUCH limited pool of audience . For Endgame ,it was narrow audience ,more money. For Avatar it was wider audience ,more money . Comic book fans single handedly carried Endgame . Whereas Avatar as a standalone film ,was more of a family movie that even a layman could go to without having to understand 20 other movies . So there was a big barrier of entry for the very casual moviegoer worldwide, especially outside of the west.
24:06 Lon: Maybe if Godzilla sang Elton John-Tim Rice songs people would have gone out.
Godzilla: The Musical 2020 make it happen
I'm not interested in Godzilla but that version I would've watched :D
thats how kong will beat him then
Wow! James Cameron really RULED film for 20 years!
The next "Avatar" WILL NOT do as well! No one wants it.
First it was Spielberg, then it was Cameron, and now it is Disney.
@@rickycollins7723 What about George Lucas with Star Wars.
Never doubt Cameron. Titanic & Avatar are also over a decade apart, and he has only made two other sequels: Aliens & Terminator 2.
Everyone says "we dont want it" but watch it'll have a huge opening weekend and be the biggest movie of the season when it's released. They're obviously doing next-level stuff with the visuals which is why it's taking so long. It'll be an event when it hits.
@@1969Makaveli I excluded him because he held that title during Spielberg's time. Jaws, E.T., and Jurassic park were all highest grossing movies of all time, it just so happens Star Wars was in between. Also, Spielberg produced Star Wars.
Finally, the thumbnail you've had prepared for months, now you can use it! Rejoice!
Oh, come now. The third Spidey movie is obviously going to be called something along the lines of "Homeless", or "Run from Home"
HunterHerne "Home is Where the Hurt Is."
'Spider-man: Home for the Holidays' - December release
Went to like this only to see I had already liked it.
Yes! Been waiting for this all week! Came here for the BIS numbers.
"We're cheating ourselves!" So true -- best way to get to know other people from other countries and cultures is to engage with their pop culture. "World peace through shared pop culture" is really the truth.
Q: Would [I] be willing to see foreign films that come to our theaters?
A. Absolutely! There are some quality projects coming out of other countries. I've been lucky to see some of them.
"With Avengers: Endgame out of the way, let's talk about the next Disney success story!"
Disney has become the box office equivalent of DJ Khaled. *another one*
Except for the most part Disney puts out decent stuff, DJ Khaled is truly terrible.
There's a reason we watch movies from your country guys: our local movies are terrible...
You'll find a gem here and there but 90% are riddled with low budget, bad acting, bad writing...etc
The only reason "Western" films are sometimes higher quality is because they've had many decades of practice and colleges training the next generations. Modern film-makers are lifted by those that came before. So while you may think a local movie isn't as good or as impressive, it may end up being a stepping stone for a great movie down the line. There's always hope. =]
Depends which country you're talking about. The UK for example puts out consistently high quality content imo.
My local TV channel have been having the same shitty "comedies" for 15+ years after the 7 o'clock news. And then at 8.30 and 10pm they get cheesy soap operas . Its really pathetic and zero creativity on their part.
@@catsthemovie4692 I stoped watching tv here. All I watch is my subscribed CZcams channels and netflix (all from usa as well)
Life is Beautiful was my first foreign film with subtitles and I watched it in theaters. Still love that movie. Tears and real laughter every time.
You guys forgot to mention "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" under "Foreign Films That Pop". It made $128 million in the US back in late 2000/early 2001. And won the Best Foreign Film Oscar.😊
Lon, there are only like 5 Russian names to choose from. 2 characters named Alexi isn’t surprising. Love the show, you guys, keep it up!
Exactly. I'm so tired of hearing that same joke/comment. It was funny for like a second and now I'm just annoyed by it. Marvel also picked his character from the comic books they didn't intend to make the Stranger Things connection a thing. It just happened. Everyone needs to get over it
Drones of people go see anything Disney, while others are like an homeless dude begging for change on the street corner with most people walking by and ignoring him.
Curious to see what a 'Top 10 International Summer Box Office' chart would look like as that 'White Storm 2:The Drug lords' is doing so well.
The next Spiderman should be " No place like Home" as Peter Park is hunted by Kraven across NYC.
Love Charting with Dan. I want him to chart my life like the show.
Godzilla would have done the full ‘Be Prepared’ 😂😂 My favourite thing today 😂
Great as always. Dan you do an amazing job. I was worried about Lon after how great Roth was but he is a delight! Keep it up and thank you for the great content.
Well, now Disney is all set to re-release Avatar right before the first sequel, to garner some free advertising.
Spider-Man: Welcome Home
Let me help you out of your chair, grandma!
GRANDMA, WHAT WAS IT LIKE~~~ TO BE ON THAT HOLIDAY SITE~~
This show is the main reason I’m still subscribed, dan really is the best movie guy on CZcams
I agree with Dan and Lon that it's a shame that people in the US aren't more open to watching subtitled foreign films. I've watched more foreign TV shows than I have films, but I've still seem some great stuff in both categories.
So you know a year ago when Infinity War came out and Roth and Dan were looking at the numbers and wondering who on Earth just went to see Infinity War? Well I met one of those people, he went because his friend wanted to see it even though he'd never seen a Marvel film. He didn't like it.
I couldn't be more proud..... Avengers Endgame is a monster!!!!!! Thank you so much Kevin Feige and of course all of you guys who have been working for so long inside this masterpiece... The Russo Brothers pushed these stories to the next level.... Blessings everyone!!!!!
It was so weird not getting a Monday episode. Totally forgot and was sitting here waiting for the charts and the new highest grossing movie
So now it’s
1. Gone with the wind
2. Star Wars a new hope
3. Avengers endgame
4. Avatar.
It's charting time!
Also, good for Avengers. I liked Avatar better than twitter does, but End Game is by *far* the better film of those two.
1. Avatar, at its time of release, was a global phenomenon that kick-started the 3D revolution that continues to this day. Even TVs briefly had 3D. But the movie hasn't aged well, especially overseas. If it re-releases no one would bat an eyelid. Which is unlike the other Jim Cameron topper, Titanic. Even after so many years, people have fond memories of the movie. The fact that Titanic's re-release in 3D was a major success and got it into the top 5 list is testimony to this.
2. Endgame has a huge advantage with regards to re-release aspects, owing to the continued success of the MCU. They can have marathon runs of previous MCU movies as pre-release events to future MCU movies. Like maybe 2-week runs of Avengers 1, 2, 3 and 4, before the release of, say, Dr Strange 2.
3. Adjusted for inflation, the biggest movie is NOT Avatar. That is Gone With The Wind (if Wikipedia and BoxOfficeMojo aren't wrong). :D
Vyshak Reghukumar inflation is weak
I can’t think of a previous summer when there were only SIX MOVIES that came out in THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JULY! Where the Hell are all the Movies??!!!
These two are just awesome to watch..
....where’s Roth?
Disney spends a billion in advertising to get the 20-30 million in ticket sales needed to say they've got the highest grossing film LMAO
At this point I'm just wondering whether 'Toy Story 4' is gonna make it to a $billion. It'll either just make it or fall just short. Still doing big things in Japan.
I am a little disappointed Dan didn't mention the countdown to Cats. Still, great show!
"They don't want people to hear about the movie before they see it" that's quite savage
Um actually, ‘Gone with the Wind’ is the highest grossing movie ever, adjusted for inflation.
suzieBirdoSum009 inflation doesn’t exist
Mason Wright it does
Once Upon a Time In Hollywood has pretty much got universal acclaim from critics, I literally have no idea what Lon is talking about. I can't wait to see it on Thursday, and look forward to Dan's review later. I have a gut feeling he probably liked it a little bit. :)
Just imagine if avengers endgame was less than 3hrs I think it would of made more money
"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is esoteric. Interesting...
My favourite SJ Show of the week
25:18 esoteric = intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest. meaning its a Tarantino film.
Spiderman Welcome Home? More like Spiderman Runs Away from Home based on the post credit scenes.
One Movie to rule them all
One Movie to find them
One Movie to bring them all
And it the lightness bind them
*Unless you count for inflation.* (Glad to find out Feige did add that.)
I thought it was suspect that it happened during the panel. I still do, until your numbers confirm it.
"Slowest, most low stakes marathon." 😂😂😂
I didn't know it's difficult to account for inflation world wide.
Ok. Now that Dan said it. This is official.
"AVENGERS: ENDGAME" IS THE HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF ALL TIME WORLD WIDE!!!
It's difficult to count, because every country has its own inflation plus there's the conversion from former national currency to Euros and exchange rate to dollar. Sounds logical, it's not gonna be the USA inflation in Egypt or Japan or France.
I’m so excited to watch Dan’s review for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Until they rerelease Avatar before Avatar 2 comes out.
Why would disney do that when they went all out to get endgame there.
@@zouadailyas8122 because they don't care. They own both now so it doesn't actually matter which one is #1.
@@kelseywaterman9779 you do realise that disney doesnt do rereleases not even incredibles got rereleased ahead of incredibles 2 so the fact that they rereleased endgame proved that disney cared since endgame is the first disney made film to get the title, add to the fact that avatar rerelease would be a money sinkhole since they have to market for little return (last avatar rerelease made 33m,another wouldnt make much),why would they waste marketing money when they a shit ton of movies coming out next year that gonna need ? A meaningless title, this is disney not a salty fanboy.
@@kelseywaterman9779 it does avatar was not made by then avengers if they didn't why would they re release it in the first place

2:20 "That's a reference to Avatar, I think."
This does not bode well.
I'm half way through the series, but can confirm Money Heist is well worth a watch. Just make sure to watch it in the original Spanish with subtitles, as the English dub is a bit of a mixed bag - some really good voice actors and others that don't quite gel with the characters.
I know I’ll get hate for it, but I think critics were too hard on lion king just because of it was trendy to be. Especially Beyoncé’s performance. I saw an edit of her voice over the animation and it was better than the original. I really enjoyed myself at the theater.
i was thinking of Sky High instead of Skyfall and i was extremely confused
Always appreciate the charts, but I'm a little disappointed you guys didn't shout out Makoto Shinkai's newest film which released in Japan over the weekend. It's called Weathering With You and it almost cracked the World Wide Top 5 this weekend with about 15.2 Million Dollars in Japan alone. That film is also important because GKids acquired the rights to distribute the film in North America so it will have a Theatrical Run in 2019 for Awards contention and a wider release in 2020. Missed a big opportunity to talk about it when Lon talked about Anime.
You could use the dollar exchange rate for when the film opened in a particular territory at a specific date.
doing that for every single currency would be a real pain in the ass, it's not like you'd just have to convert from Euros, Pounds and Yuans, you'd need to convert each individual value from each country (or region in case of Euro)...
About foreign films- I love foreign films and books. I work at a library and discuss bks & movies with patrons a lot. It astounds me how many people don't know basic information about film distribution... Many people don't know that you can't watch DVDs everywhere, OR that there are many films that are produced and released elsewhere that don't get released in America!
It really surprised me!!
"Breathtaking" is still the best on stage response this year, but "who came up with this question" is now a close second

Feige: You think this was a coincidence?
**puts away reality stone**
You could just count tickets sold and you don't have to ever again adjust for inflation
thebreatho endgame wins
If they did, Endgame wouldn't even be in the top 10 worldwide....and they'd be outside it by a wide margin.
