A note regarding Justice League: this is a show about exploring box office numbers beyond the surface level. Justice League is an interesting case, a movie that is wavering on the margin of being profitable or not, which will depend on how the numbers come in week by week. How will it do beyond 2 weeks? Will the dropoff be more precipitous? Will international numbers flag? I look forward to tracking these questions, examining the results together, and making determinations about its success based on its actual performance - not making a final judgment based on assumptions about performance. I have acknowledged repeatedly that, profitable or not, Justice League is not the runaway success that WB would have wanted. Movies like Justice League that provide a continuing storyline and leave some nuance for analysis are part of what makes doing this show so fun for me and why I like having the conversation with you each week. On a side note, I think it's hilarious that I find myself urging temperance about a DC movie after years of people accusing me of being a DC hater. - Dan
I've no issue with your opinion on Justice League. My issue is in your analysis. There is enough data at this point, that simply 'waiting and seeing' isn't good enough. It's safe to say Justice League will lose between $50 and $100 million dollars, the data backs it up. So, with that being said, what reasons can you give to show an upturn is possible for JL? If you can present a real argument, other than 'anything is possible' and 'we just don't know,' then I'll rescind my previous statements.
I appreciate your level-headedness, Dan. I don't know what video everyone is watching, because I heard you say pretty clearly that the best case scenario for the movie is that it holds on very well until Star Wars comes out and *still* barely breaks even. There's plenty of people dancing on the DCEU's grave giving hot takes, nothing wrong with acknowledging multiple reasonable possibilities for the future and sitting back to report on developments as they happen
They said Coco passed the Chinese censorship by making the censorship officials cry. That aside some element's in Coco like family gathering, grave visit and ofrenda are similiar to chinese customs, that does resonate well with the public. I sat beside a guy who came with his daughter and he cried at the end!
Disney's marketing strategy is so brilliant. they want to be a tradition, a holiday tradition. What are you doing for thanksgiving? seeing a Pixar film with your family. What are you doing for christmas? Buying a tree, leaving out milk and cookies, and watching Star Wars. So. Smart. especially because its working.
I'm 24 ears old, Mexican, and live in Texas. I went on a date to see Coco and loved it. I had nostalgia for my culture and loved the message. I literally cried for the entire third act. I got out of the movie and saw a lot of families. The kids loved the movie and were happy but what surprised me was the parents, they were also crying. You know its a good movie when adults are crying.
Marco Madrid exactly, people here were worried at first if we were being shown coco. Disney did pull a weird one here to get people to watch coco i guess.
Dan...“Justice League” has to gross $700M worldwide to breakeven theatrically. Production cost for it is reported at $300M. P&A is AT LEAST $150M. Plus, exhibitors (theaters) get approx 33% of the first week’s gross, etc. Deadline.com’s financial sources say that breakeven for this film is approx. $700M.
DCs problem has completely stemmed from paying way too much attention to what Marvel does and feeling the need to catch up or play by the rules the latter established. Fox has shown with Deadpool and Logan that the Marvel model isn't the only way to tackle superhero films. DC just needs to worry about making good movies with characters we love and not try to fast pace the timeline to "catch up."
I believe tht Coco did well in China because China has a very similar tradition in regards of ancestry where we pray for them at a particular moment each year with offerings including food and things that they might need in the after life.
It's so weird, Im a huge comic fan. been reading DC and Marvel forever. But i Haven't seen JL...Never thought I would feel so unmotivated to see a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.
McZalion you're right.. the Justice league and all of DC deserve better than WB. I'm glad the suits finally got DC creative team involved starting with Wonder Woman & DC Films
It's nice to think the Chinese censors were simply delighted by Coco and let it screen, but the reality is it happened for the same reason anytime anyone gets there way in China, palms were greased. That's the only language they understand. Before anyone gets all hot and bothered my parents and my DNA are Chinese.
I work at a theater and we constantly had ppl coming out to ask if they were in the right movie because it droned on for so long. I think most ppl were over it after 10 minutes. I think Pixar didn't have as much confidence in how Coco would perform at the box office so they tacked the Frozen thing on when clearly it didn't need it.
I love the MCU but Im sad to see Justice League underperforming. I grew up with DC characters more than I did with Marvel characters (except X-men and Spiderman) a lot of the love I have for Marvel characters now is because of the MCU. Im sure there are plenty of interesting DC characters that will not get a shot at a movie because of the lack of success of JL.
Yep, and we still won't (probably) get that Superman movie. You know, the one where he's actually the true, fully formed character. Cavill deserves a shot at that IMO. Oh well, back to watching the old Reeve movie.
Yeah most likely they will end up bringing in a new team that knows how to make good comic movies, but their biggest flaw is playing that catching up game. Even the Marvel series on Netflix rushed projects and they ended up with a mediocre team up series. They must let their characters be built. Thats why people care about Thor even though he had two very bland movies. But even if they managed to recover, many projects will get pushed back. By and people already feel super hero movies fatigue from these movies taking over the film industry.
While I disagree with the tone of a lot of people in the comments section, I do have to agree with a lot of them: It doesn't look like JL has any reasonable chance of breaking even at the box office. There are no markets that don't know the movie's out, and no time between now and when Star Wars comes out where people will be flocking to the movies. Best case scenario is that it holds remarkably well, WB didn't spend as much as some reporters have speculated, and it doesn't lose *too* much money. So glad Coco did pretty well (it's one of my favorite movies of the year), but the production costs are worryingly high to me, and I've heard a lot of bad word of mouth from parents about the length of the Frozen short being difficult for families. Hope people who hear this just choose to take their kids to the movie 30 minutes late, because I desperately want this movie to do well. It also will be rolling out internationally until March next year, so plenty of time for it to turn a bit of a profit. My Movie Pass card just came in the mail, can't wait to check out all of the Oscar movies on the cheap!
You have to consider that Mexicans gain money in pesos. The movie tickets and have not increased their price as much as the dollar (which has almost doubled since 2012). Neither have the salaries. I think Coco has selled more than Avengers.
But would it have made more money with Snyder still on board? Who knows. But at least with the shorter runtime they can fit in more screenings. Personally I think they needed to change director for these movies, but the production of JL was a complete mess and the film does feel choppy and stitched together.
Guy Incognito idc everyone is entitled to there own opinion. 300, however, was a complete hit. It's a fact. You may not like it and I respect your opinion but it was a hit.
As opposed to giving Snyder free reign so we can get more trash like MoS and BvS? No thanks. WB not meddling and giving Snyder too much freedom is how they ended up in their current sorry state.
I would have much preferred to have seen the Snyder cut for Justice League. MoS was a masterpiece IMHO, and BvS was the clear point that WB started interfering. One needs to look no farther than the extended edition, which pretty much everyone agrees was a FAR better film than the theatrical cut. Unfortunately, a Snyder version of JL doesn't exist without WB throwing more money at this project, which at this point will never happen. But hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. There is no right or wrong, and none of us own the company or have anything invested in it. Considering the tragedy surrounding this film it's amazing it ever came together in the first place. I was honestly surprised it did as well as it did on opening weekend considering it was a November release. None of the predictions that it would crack $100 million ever made any sense to me considering the track record for the DCEU films and the typical November opening.
Guy Incognito A "hit" would refer to masses of people liking a movie, quoting it, and making it very profitable at the time it was established. As I said, you may not have liked it and I respect your opinion but yes it was loved.... Just not by you
Call me by your name looks BEAUTIFUL and I want to see it so so bad I watched the trailer a couple months ago and I’ve just been waiting impatiently until it comes to North Carolina
Justice League was amazing....It was literally the most purely entertaining action packed movie of the year in my opinion...Def a must see in IMAX....Coco I haven't seen yet I heard it was great as well.
So dissapointed that Coco isn't gonna be released until January 18th in the UK. Disney Pixar have done this to us with most of their major animated releases now.
I happily saw Wonder Woman, despite being called a chauvinist for refusing to see Ghostbusters (by the way, where is the counterpoint to Paul Feig about that?). But Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were disappointing. I haven't seen Justice League and all the reviews/behind the scenes info really deter me from it. I'm not much of a DC fan, but I want them to succeed. I have seen great things from their animated department. The content IS existent.
This is a great show and a great channel. You guys can create special show like this for others as well like Spencer Tuesday Specials or some shit. Just find some original content like this
I have to ask - have they made any announcements about ppossible return of Movie Fights? I like these discussions and all, but I really miss the fights.
This guy just said "If you haven't seen 'The Room', go see 'The Room'"........ Because I own it, I can tell you from experience: it's a trap! But I'd like you to get drunk and try your best to make sense of this movie for me. Please. "Lisa! How could you do this to me Lisa?!?!"--Tommy Wiseau
The UK Box Office must have Warner execs terrified: 1. Daddy's Home 2, £4,919,051 from 505 sites (new) 2. Paddington 2, £4,545,218 from 638 sites. Total: £22,990,836 (three weeks) 3. Justice League, £2,990,474 from 584 sites. Total: £12,917,287 (two weeks) I can't remember the last time a major movie fell to third in its second week unless two other big hitters opened.
Three Billboards and Lady Bird open this weekend in my city and I'm so freaking excited! Seeing Lady Bird Thursday and then Three Billboards Sunday probably. It's getting to that time of year where the movies I actually excited for are coming out.
The top 4 per screen movies of this year so far are highly recommended films for sure! I'm so thrilled that Call Me By Your Name have gotten so much support from all over the world saying how great the movie is. I also heard Shape of Water is amazing too, can't wait to see it in theatres!
Good Dinosaur is so underrated and underappreciated. That movie made me cry. Was it the best animated movie ever? No, its not. But the movie has heart and a hidden depth that doesn't get talked about enough.
Dan, you and Grace Randolph really tried downplaying JL's terrible numbers last week. It's over now. JL is on pace for a worldwide total of around 650 million. With this weekend coming up being historically one of lowest grossing weekends of year...JL will drop 60+percent here in the U.S.
Snoopy Fod At $650 million, Jo would barely break even and would most likely still lose money for the studio if the $300 million budget is to be believed
That may well be - but my point is that a lot of conclusions are being made based on assumptions, while I'm more interested in the actual numbers. I also acknowledged that if JL is going to be profitable, it will barely make money and isn't the result WB wanted. Not really sure what I'm downplaying. - DM
Dan at this point so afraid of DC if not fans backlash that he seem back himself off into corner like little boy, "well it's not too bad, not disaster" ARE YOU KIDDING ME, 300 Mil budget exclude marketing and other crap with 93 Mil box office with diminishing return. This TEAM UP supposed to be at least more BvS kind of money if not Avenger money and it make even less than solo movie, take 5 minutes and let that sink in.
Ned Slass I agree with Dan on this, the 3rd weekend would be the true indicator of JL's legs as they won't have the Thanksgiving break to cushion the drop. It's still a wait and see but regardless of whether it hits $650 million or higher, it's still very dissapointing for WB
was Coco available on thursday thanksgiving? I don't live in the US so i am not sure but if thats the case, its not surprising Coco gets more box office, everyone watch the movie on Thursday, comparing to JL.
YoloDwayne fernandes these high budget numbers usually factor in overpaying family members and friends in the business. Also they are overpaying for technology too. Also Also, top tier animators aren't cheap especially at pixar
It'll be ok. It's rolling out in international territories until March. We'll see how it does in the long-term, but with its current performance I'd say it'll at least break even.
It's a little bit different with animated movies, at least those made by Disney, because a huge chunk of those budgets are long term investments. Ie Tangled was ridiculous expensive because they had to write a whole new software for the animation of the hair - a software which has since then be used in a number of animated movies. Coco is apparently another of those movies for which they spend extra-money for technologic development. I also wouldn't worry too much, Coco will be smash hit and the academy award winner this year due to lack of competition from other major studios.
Next week I'll try do a double feature and watch Wonder and Coco back to back. Hoped Lon will atleast dye his hair purple/pink if he is subbing for Roth. Show some initiative!
Dan (mr. infamous sometime unfairly DC basher) at this point so afraid of DC if not fans backlash that he seem back himself off into corner like little boy, "well it's not too bad, not disaster" ARE YOU KIDDING ME, 300 Mil budget exclude marketing and other crap with 93 Mil box office with diminishing return. This TEAM UP supposed to be at least more BvS kind of money if not Avenger money and it make even less than solo movie, take 5 minutes and let that sink in. From 166 Mil Batman v Superman to 93 Mil, if that is not giant red flag I don't know what
China has a problem with local supernatural movies, more specifically movie that talks about supernatural within China mainland. If it is elsewhere it’s not their problem. Do not forget that there is a limit to foreigner movies that are allowed in the chinese market.

He probably clocked out already lol
You are defending DC Dan??? Have the Marvel checks not cleared yet this month??? (This meme will never die)
i took my parents to coco on friday here in india and they had a blast. they were in tears at the end.
MrVad3r tell about that experience.
If anyone can make your childhood magical, it's Pixar
Coco has been out for a month now in Mexico and weekend screenings are still selling out

Coco is Great. I'm Colombian and a father so the movie really got me in many levels.
Coco was fun. I loved it. Loved Hector and Coco. I loved the music. It was a gorgeous film.
sundawg911 And it has a small plot twist..
After Inside Out and Coco, Pixar should release more originals instead of sequals/prequals.
Yay!!! I literally just finished today's SJU and was about to be productive when this dropped. Perfect timing. 👌🏻
Sigh...same here
They said Coco passed the Chinese censorship by making the censorship officials cry.
That aside some element's in Coco like family gathering, grave visit and ofrenda are similiar to chinese customs, that does resonate well with the public. I sat beside a guy who came with his daughter and he cried at the end!
Im mexican salvadorean and love coco going to watch it again this week and bringing more people! Love it
Disney's marketing strategy is so brilliant. they want to be a tradition, a holiday tradition. What are you doing for thanksgiving? seeing a Pixar film with your family. What are you doing for christmas? Buying a tree, leaving out milk and cookies, and watching Star Wars.
So. Smart. especially because its working.
"a star wars size black hole in the box office..." best quote of the show!
I'm 24 ears old, Mexican, and live in Texas. I went on a date to see Coco and loved it. I had nostalgia for my culture and loved the message. I literally cried for the entire third act. I work in a theater and people keep complaining that we are playing the wrong movie when frozen comes on
I love Coco, but i wish I'd known about that Frozen "short film", cuz I'd of shown up 30 minutes later.
I loved Coco.......that Frozen short was stupid and way too long
Connie B.
I literally forgot that I was watching coco

omfg is Roth watching the Infinity War trailer?
She's in Hawaii for a Jumanji press junket.
Infinity war trailer 2 days to go.right?
Coco not releasing in UK till Jan next year. Not sure why they release some movies so late here in the UK. Cant wait to see it.
I'm in Love with the COCO..
please bring back flick bait with LON!
Yes please!
Aaron Siewert Flick Bait is so much more than that. It's goddamned hilarious. Stop being so sensitive.
You done messed up A-Aron
Charting with Dan is better ;)
It is a very "clicky" title..

It would be interesting if you added a "adjusted for inflation" list for all-time box-office stuff. Gives us more perspective. Anyway nice show!
I prefer “charting with dan”
Justice League had a lot fewer theaters over Thanksgiving in my town. I would not be surprised if it were gone next weekend.
the frozen things before coco was just so tedious. why 21 minutes!!!! ahhh!!!
foxmouth felt like 45 minutes. It really made covo feel a lot shorter

Good idea. Unfortunately ScreenJunkies News has already mentioned that they aren't looking at doing anything with 'Flick Bait' at this time.
When did they mention this?? :(
Billy Business commented it on another video. And it had been mentioned on Joe Starr's twitter.
I guess you could say coco is league's better ;)

I can't remember the last time a major movie fell to third in its second week unless two other big hitters opened.
Love seeing more of Lon!
I want to start to more of Lon now
I hope Vancouver gets Shape of Water! I wanna see that so much!
Doesn't the per screen average also get affected by how much it costs per ticket in LA and NY?
Im glad Dan remembered Ludacris's second album "Word Of Mouf" came out on this day in hip hop
These are my favourite videos
Rip Dceu
Ej Johnson horray
AMEN.
Definitely Charting with Dan
Three Billboards and Lady Bird open this weekend in my city and I'm so freaking excited! Seeing Lady Bird Thursday and then Three Billboards Sunday probably. It's getting to that time of year where the movies I actually excited for are coming out.
How is it open everywhere but here in the Netherlands it opens this week
The top 4 per screen movies of this year so far are highly recommended films for sure! I'm so thrilled that Call Me By Your Name have gotten so much support from all over the world saying how great the movie is. I also heard Shape of Water is amazing too, can't wait to see it in theatres!
Good Dinosaur is so underrated and underappreciated. That movie made me cry. Was it the best animated movie ever? No, its not. But the movie has heart and a hidden depth that doesn't get talked about enough.
BSMART18. Nah right behind cars 2 and 3 as the worst pixar movies
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
China actually made a good move on "STORY" then robot/CGI explosion
Dan, you and Grace Randolph really tried downplaying JL's terrible numbers last week. It's over now. JL is on pace for a worldwide total of around 650 million. With this weekend coming up being historically one of lowest grossing weekends of year...JL will drop 60+percent here in the U.S.
Snoopy Fod At $650 million, Jo would barely break even and would most likely still lose money for the studio if the $300 million budget is to be believed
Snoopy Fod it's called box office reporting not making rainbows out of shit
TheEquilibrum007 its was down here in San Diego!!!
Coco is better than Justice League.
simon chacko no it's not
the only thing that worries me is that coco costs 200 million dollars
YoloDwayne fernandes these high budget numbers usually factor in overpaying family members and friends in the business. Also they are overpaying for technology too. Also Also, top tier animators aren't cheap especially at pixar
no, i know , but i am hoping it will earn it's money back
YoloDwayne fernandes It will, it's already grossed way over 100 million worldwide.
So what are we, some kind ofJustice League?
Didn't Darkest Hour open with ~60K pta this week?
Interesting episode guys, and please keep the name charting with dan.
Not going to lie. Lan had a better "sidekick" feel. I liked it more with him... no hate to Roth!
Next week I'll try do a double feature and watch Wonder and Coco back to back.
Hoped Lon will atleast dye his hair purple/pink if he is subbing for Roth. Show some initiative!
Love the beard, Lon!
Dan (mr. infamous sometime unfairly DC basher) at this point so afraid of DC if not fans backlash that he seem back himself off into corner like little boy, "well it's not too bad, not disaster" ARE YOU KIDDING ME, 300 Mil budget exclude marketing and other crap with 93 Mil box office with diminishing return. This TEAM UP supposed to be at least more BvS kind of money if not Avenger money and it make even less than solo movie, take 5 minutes and let that sink in. From 166 Mil Batman v Superman to 93 Mil, if that is not giant red flag I don't know what
Coco's art style look very similar to Book of Life to me
Where's Movie Fights?
2:22 facts
China has a problem with local supernatural movies, more specifically movie that talks about supernatural within China mainland. If it is elsewhere it’s not their problem. Do not forget that there is a limit to foreigner movies that are allowed in the chinese market.
GUYS, GO SEE THE SHAPE OF WATER! I CAN'T RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH THAT MOVIE IS FUCKING EXCELLENT
LON!!! Hell yeah
I like Ross and Dan chemistry but Harris opinions are very good and well thought, more constructive then Ross, pair this two on this segment please
Hangrid1 you mean Roth?
I do sorry.
Roth is better.
Wasn't a few Pixar movies also Thanksgiving opening over the years?
i didn't like frozen being played before coco.
10 years ago this would sounded ridiculous
Did Disney had a release of Mulan in China? That story had a lot of supernatural, spirits and ancestors.
Cars 3? Damn i forgot that movie came out
Honest trailer for Batman TAS
"cushioned a little bit by Thanksgiving"...SMH.
Guy Incognito shaking my head.
Guy Incognito yeah. I always thought it was "so much hate", but I was advised is mote of shameful disappointment than anger.
no it means so much hate
