- In this, which is part 5 of my 'Beginner's Guide' series, I show you how I throw a simple, stoneware bowl on the potter's wheel. I discuss the general technique, together with chatting about some of the finer points, like how to finish the rim and how the interior curve should be made. Thanks for watching!

Dear Florian, thank you very much for this great video. I took all my courage and write a comment. Not only am I learning about pottery, I'm also improving my English. First of all, I can understand you well because you speak clearly and pleasantly. Warm greetings from Bavaria in Germany, Theresa.
I must say, as a native English speaker, your English is very good! It sounds just like a native English speaker. Good job!
Dear Theresa, there are "open to all" summer classes at Keramikschule Landshut during summer vacation. Maybe that's something for you
I loved your teaching about wing, having watched the cantering video before it. I had @ lesson today on throwing and whilst I could centre and pull up and push down to really centre the clay, when I tried to pull up, I took the top off twice with my nail. Devastating. So when I came home I watched this video and realise I wasn’t pulling up the sides comfortably due to my finger position. So I’ll try the other hand next time t week. Love your video training sessions. Thank you.

you are so good at explaining how to throw! better than some of the teachers i’ve had lol thanks for the great content!
you are an excellent teacher. I just had my first spinning class and was so overwhelmed and honestly anxious due to the amount of information delivered and not at all understanding how all of the steps we were doing connected together. I now feel confident that at my next class, I understand the general progression and steps.
this is the best explanation I ve seen so far! Thank you so much. I got a little disheartened today, trying to throw some bowls. Seeing you throwing with ease and grace makes me want to try again.
Thanks Florian for everything you share with us, in all you do, the throwing, the cutting, the way you montage the fragments, your speaking, your teaching, everything has this ‘Potter-energy’. Only watching you at the wheel, brings back the calmness and feeling of being centered and grounded when I was having my first lessons. I remember that feeling stayed with me most of the day.
Yes - agree with you - much more calming and peaceful than anything. I like the focus.
Thanks for your videos, Florian! Could you at some point discuss wheel speeds as you mold your pieces? Thanks in advance! ❤️
Such a helpful and concise video. I used to do a lot of throwing in my twenties, but haven't used my wheel for more than 30 years. Watching your videos has given me the confidence I needed to feel my way back into throwing. Thank you Florian.
the ball trick is quite good to judge the curvature 👌
This was a fantastic video on throwing a bowl. The cross section visuals with explanation are extremely helpful. Glad I watched your video, thank you!
Your videos are wonderful! Detailed and informative with plenty of visuals-I’m a former beginner potter returning to wheel throwing after 25 years. I’m relearning largely from you. Thank you for such a fantastic resource!
I watched the whole video. Very informative. I’ve been perfecting my mugs for years and now going back to bowls it’s helpful to have a good video. Thanks 🙏
I'd love to try this, but I know I won't. Still fascinating to watch you explain the process
Perfect timing as I started on bowls this week. Thanks.
I found a tool like yours to help with making the bowls the same width. It’s been 16 degrees in sacramento California so have been glazing inside my house and minimal studio work. I can’t wait to till the temperatures decrease so I can go back into the studio. I’m also getting a chance to watch your videos. Thanks for your videos and great descriptions of what and why you’re doing things.
It's so satisfying watching the clean up at the end.
I'm a complete beginner and I just got my wheel and kiln last week. I'm learning so much from you. I follow you on Instagram and I love your work! Thank you😊
Thanks for continuing these videos. They are very helpful and relaxing to sit and watch. :)
Your videos are so well done and informative, thank you!!
Very good explained...and shown. As always. No unimportant BlaBla. Your'e a good Teacher👍
Hi Florian, love watching your video's. Very clear explanations. I've done some courses and treated myself to a throwing wheel. You are my best companion in my studio. Thanks a million for putting al these valuable video's online.
I'm watching your videos since you have 68+k subscribers, I thought that why this man Don't have 1M? He deserve it! Look! Now you have 1M + subscribers ❤️ I'm very happy for you man! Your hard work and Creativity inspire me💯 Love from Bangladesh❤️🇧🇩
Thank you so much for your beautifully clear videos. Lots more please.
Fabulous video. Thanks for the detailed explanation. Very helpful😊
Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Your technique it's incredible, and it shows on the results you get.
When reclaiming the clay from those large surfaces, do you ever have to worry about foreign particles mixing in with the clay, or even bacteria or moulds developing on it?
Thank you!! 🥣😄
I still love your videos so much, thank you for sharing your expertise!
I'm using your style for pottery, and it's a really wonderful style.
Hi Florian can you please do a video on clay showing the correct consistency of clay for throwing. Your clay seems to be very soft and when I use soft clay it collapses very quickly if I try to rectify mistakes. However I am finding that I have problems with RSI in my hands using firmer clay and now can’t wedge large pieces of clay or pull up a large piece of clay. Any tips or demonstrations would be great for an older potter who’s taken this hobby up in retirement. Thanks so much and love your helpful demonstrations. Lynne NZ
Always helpful and inspirational!
Amazing explanation, love it!
Amazing video! Super useful and informative.
A very interesting video. Thank you for the explanation and demonstration.
Thank you very much for making videos and sharing.
Thanks so much!! You inspire me. The bowl shape is perfection.
Many thanks - appreciate you taking the time to watch!
i love it! thank you for this amazing video
Excellent and attractive work
Thanks Florian!
The diagrams are super useful
Hi again Florian another thing I would love you to show us how to sharpen the cheaper tools that many of us have like the pear tool and loop tools as mine get blunt so fast and I can’t afford expensive ones yet. Thanks so much . Lynne New Zealand
Thanks for great videos👍👍👍
A great tutorial video
Very Good and nice work
Thank You so much for your videos Florian. I have only started a pottery class and thanks to you managed to center my clay! Would you have any recommendations for a beginners wheel that is at a low price range. Not like the fancy pants Rhode you just got :)! Thanks!
You are amazing. Thank you 🖤🇧🇷
Man, those look amazing... so simple and yet so beautiful! By the way, do you recommend any specific types or brands of clay for beginner potters?
yooo you uploaded just an hour before I went to sleep, I had to choose a video of yours I've already seen lol
Merci pour vous 🌺
when throwing larger 2.5lbs bowls of the same shape, will it be necessary for you to leave more clay in the base of the wall to support the weight i wonder. When i do , it seems necessary.... more to trim afterwards. excellent video . thank you
bravo!¨
Thank you
@Florian Gadsby
Another one in the can, Darlin' !!
Speaking of beginner tutorials, would you happen to be familiar with any somewhat renowned Potter's on the eastern coast of the US primarily around the Carolinas. I've heard there are some in that area but where they are I've no idea and sometimes searching on the internet really does not help at all. I ask because I have absolutely no idea of where to begin, like which Clay's might be best for beginner hands, etc. So if you know a potters in that area, I be grateful and thank you Florian. 💋
Rock on, 😀🤘

Do you ever use bats? I’d love a video of just the tools and bits you use in the studio.
He definitely uses them to throw plates, and also some other forms that are hard to lift off the wheel. You see him use batts more often for porcelain than for stoneware, presumably because the stoneware is either easier to lift or less likely to deform than the porcelain.
Hey Florian! You mentioned the importance of the twisted wire. I was wondering where you got yours as I’ve only found twisted wires that have twists that are way too big for my taste.
I buy all the components from Bath Potters, here in the UK, then assemble them myself.
Plzz ❤️🥰 make more videos 🤠
Thank you for the amazing videos! They must take an age to put together.
I notice you don’t compress the bases of your bowls- is it not necessary for bowls?
It really depends on the clay you’re using. Some need it, others don’t, but it’s generally always a good idea to do it! Even if I don’t with these.
Hi Florian, very useful cross sections, clay weight and bowl dimensions - also why and how to remove the base and then return to centre of bowl to re-shape the form. Also to spin the wheel when romping the pot form from the wheel 🌟 T H A N K Y O U 🌟
👌👌👌👌👌👌😊😊😊😊😊😊
👍👍👍👍👍🤗
Why do you use your index finger and thumb and not both thumbs?
How Can I purchase these items???
from his website check the bottom of the description
Hey florian - love this series. I recently came across this video (czcams.com/video/wa7k7Hkh3SY/video.html) and was wondering if you'd ever do non-demo videos in which you talk about the influences on your forms and their development? I see a lot of influence from japanese ceramics and talking about how you've incorporated those elements into your designs would be really interesting.
Hi Eleanor - yes indeed - our influences as creatives (I'm am graphic designer) is ongoing and constantly reforming - I watch and look at all different galleries and potters - really an important aspect of pottery design.

Thank God😊
My bowls collapse :(
Sorry to hear so! At what stage?
@@floriangadsby oh thanks for replying, they collapse when finishing to pull up the walls, Also when I trim the bottom, the bottom presses down and it deformes the bottom of the bowl. Any tips? Thanks 🙏
This is not what I was expecting......
