Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, we are preparing the domain to open our gates for the Journées du Patrimoine. We meet an electrician who can help us bring in modern electrical systems to our chateau offices. After several weeks of anticipation, we finally have the old chateau gardens cut back to reveal a peek at the original renaissance garden design!
Our beau chateau (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!

Porcelain stoves are the most efficient way of heating there is. In the 18th century, Swedish castles and houses used them, and they were famous for being the warmest places to live in Scandinavia, so France adopted them, too. Worth finding a way to repair the one you have. They are both beautiful and useful.

The aerial images of the garden, even before being cut, reveal a lot about the design of the garden. I use images like this for my own work to assist with restoration. You guys have some very defined and clear images. I'm curious to see the courtyard once the cobblestones are cleaned. Congrats on the progress! Cheers-

i love the relaxing filming mode of your videos. Also, both your voices are calming and grounding, its a pleasure to listen to you, unlike other chateau renovation owners who are very loud and noisy. We would be missing all this beauty shared with us, in the most relaxing way. And Ian is quite gifted in making the videos so why not doing it? like i said, they are a treat for our eyes (and ears :)). Oh and, can i say that i love how you speak french? Most english speakers have weird accents but yours is quite good, another treat for the ears :).

I'm sure you know already, but the parchmarks in the garden show where there's a hard surface below, like a pathway or footings for an old wall. In the hotter months, the moisture in the earth gets blocked from being drawn to the surface and the grass above the hard feature dies off quicker than the grass around it. That garden is going to be awesome! 😎

The stove is a poêle en faïence from Vitry-le-François (I left a comment last week but you didn’t get a chance to read it I guess 🙂), you might be able to find someone to repair it online. All the best, and thank you for your videos 🙂

What a wonderful gift your Grandfather gave you. He obviously saw that you loved his dream as much as he did. Inheritance tax is brutal in France as I watch another channel that the family of two brothers and two sisters couldn’t afford the tax and decided to burn the place down (leaving only the shell) and sell the land. So sad. Another utuber has bought the once amazing property and is going to try to restore it from the shell. He is not rich so it will be a life project as he can afford. Bless you Daphne and Ian in your quest to save another French chateau. New Zealand 🇳🇿

Dungeon roof, a self leveling all purpose clear coat sealer will do the trick and you can do it yourself. Put a dehumidifier or a fan pointed up to the dungeon ceiling to dry it out. Boom done.

You guys are such hard workers...People cant even begin to understand the amount of hours it takes to do all this WHILE FILMING IT.(i know,i worked in television for a long time,and i live in a(small)house in the woods.Just keeping nature from taking back the property and grounds is a big task! No surprise that US electrical regulations seem odd to him, Europe runs 230 Volt for everything where In the US, Canada and some of South America 120 volt is used in the majority of the house. 240 is generally wired into kitchens, laundry rooms and garages to run dryers, stoves, water heaters, central heating and cooling, Welders etc.
I love how relaxing your video too. Also, you includes your fur babies who really want join you too. This makes it even more relaxing

To rebuild the ceramic wood stove together use a fireplace mortar that is formulated to withstand the high heat. Do not use a household or construction glue. They will not withstand the heat a fire will generate.

The reservation I have about your "terrace crack-patching work" is that you should have included some "control joints" and filled them with some commercial "sausage caulk" of a very durable nature to allow for expansion and contraction during wintertime - which is coming soon!
A lovely hard working down to earth couple who clearly enjoy the renovations of this beautiful chateau. It's a shame another well known chateau doesn't have the same attitude, there's more to life than dressing up, eating, drinking and giggling. Well done for showing us that any money donated is well spent.

@The Beau Chateau your tiles are from a Majolica Tile Wood Stove. If you Google that you should be able to find a few to guide you on how to put it together.
It's always fun to see what is uncovered on these château restoration channels. I'm looking forward to seeing more. The garden looks so much better already having been mowed.

Really elegantly filmed and edited video. The garden project looks vast and a great challenge. I used weed and driveway clear chemicals on cobblestones. It's much easier once applied to get all the dead grass and weeds out from the stones and the gaps between. Otherwise the problem will come back again if you don't kill off the grass completely.

The huge International trade show for cars is Oct. 17-23 it's in several of the buildings at Porte de Versailles- Metro ligne 12. There is always a building dedicated to old cars....I don't know if they have it anymore but Paris hosted a trade show for convertibles and an even bigger building full of old roadsters....
Thanks for letting us know! Fun fact, after Ian got out of the military, he purchased his dream car, a 1967 Mustang fastback. Sadly he sold it before moving to France, but he hopes to have one again someday! He says he wants a 1968 Mustang GT 390 like Steve McQueen had 😄
@@TheBeauChateau When I was a kid my parents bought a 65 Mustang, in the 80's I had a 67 fastback, white with blue interior, when the speed limit was 55 she purred at 75... traded her for a Cadillac then sold that and moved to France...
Normally a bricklayer would lay a brick foundation to plaster the glazed stone tiles on to. Try finding a bricklayer to inquire further, as to who they could recommend to rebuild it, would be my suggestion.

I used to have a large stove like that in Germany, called “Kacheloven”
Once every 15 years someone had to redo the grout with mortar.
Check if you can find a video in CZcams. It has to heat resistant as these ovens get very hot.
Dry the skins of oranges and clementines on top of it. Makes a good fire starter.

It's a gorgeous stove. I'm sure France still has some artisans that are more than capable. Not only check online, but ask around the local areas. Sometimes you can only find something by word of mouth.
The stove is beautiful. I like it too. Great choice.
The two best parts of this video were Daphne's decision to have a light for the balcony for wine, bread, and cheese in nice weather; also Ian's discovery of the original garden boundaries. I thought you might have been able to make them out from the different vegetation growing in patterns in the garden, but after mowing the grass I lost hope for that. Will the next step be buying a new weed-whacker or LIDAR, lol? You could pay for both if you metal-detect the garden and find French gold Napoléons and silver francs buried there.

Outstanding production quality made this such a pleasure to watch! I'm so excited to see the revealing of the original garden structures. It's like an archeological dig. The cobblestones are also going to be worth all the work to uncover. Its grueling, but the results will be magnificently rewarding.
