    This is a classic case of having to separate the art from the artist. I honestly haven't really respected JK Rowling for a long time (due to other reasons) but I never stopped being a Potterhead. Just because she is saying these awful and hateful things doesn't mean we can't still enjoy her books and the messages she put in them.

      @Brittalbarron Před 3 lety +3

      Exactly! I have a relationship with the characters, not her! I don’t know her! I know Harry, Ron and Hermione and none of them would stand for this! Hermione would for sure set up a club just like SPEW for the LGBTQ+ community! She would! Ravenclaw is a house of misfits and people who accept everyone! She wrote that, but she can’t follow it! As a legit, proper Ravenclaw, I accept everyone for who they are, no matter who they are. Hufflepuffs are loyal and caring and that doesn’t exclude ANYONE! Gryffindor’s are brave and stand up for what they believe in! Neville stood up against his peers and friends and was rewarded for it! She teaches love for everyone but doesn’t follow her own words. No way Newt would ever look at someone differently because of who they are! Those are my people! Those are my characters who are real to me! Not someone who can’t follow their own words!

      I think the problem most people have is they put words into other peoples mouths. I am curious as to when she said any of these groups are not valid? her point seems to be based on language and definitions. She believes that words like Woman and man have a definition.I am not sure how that is hateful. I have asked trans people about JK most of the agree with her. So are those trans people transphobic? or are people purposefully twisting what she is saying?

    • @josephine-rt6jw
      @josephine-rt6jw Před 4 lety +12

      @@wizdumbbk I understand where you are coming from, some of her problematic actions happened long before this, and are even incorporated into the books. on december 19th 2019, She tweeted "Dress how you please,
      call yourself whatever you'd like,
      sleep with any consenting adult who'll have you,
      live your best life in peace and security,
      but force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? "
      this was in response to a scandal regarding Maya Forstater, a researcher who made a series of transphobic tweets, who was then fired. Her tweet at first sounds somewhat accepting, but it has serious dark undertones, and was clearly intended to hurt. On June 6th she tweeted " 'people who menstruate' I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. someone help me out. wumben? wimpund? woomud?" in response to an opinion piece about creating a more equal post covid-19 world for people who menstruate. Now theres a couple things wrong with this tweet. a) not all women have periods b) not all people who have periods are women. Now this isn't the worst thing in the world, however it just shows carelessness on her part. But even if you were to chalk it up to a simple miscommunication, the essay she posted on her website more than proves her transphobia. From insisting that “biological sex” is of utmost importance to reiterating a number of damaging trans stereotypes, Rowling reveals over and over again that she doesn’t see trans women as real women. Not to mention she states "the allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge, if I’d found community and sympathy online that I couldn’t find in my immediate environment, I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he’d have preferred.” now this is fucked up for so many different reasons. She's implying that trans men transition to escape the "troubles of womanhood" which is bullshit, and she's pretty much saying that gender is a choice. Trust me my friend, it is not. If i could just wake up one day completely comfortable in my afab body, completely happy with being a girl, I would. But i can't. Suggesting that people choose to be trans is quite frankly insane, considering that the suicide, murder, and sexual assault numbers against the trans community are ridiculously high. She also referring to the debate around public washrooms in particular, Rowling claims she’s concerned for the safety of cis women and girls. “When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman-and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones-then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside.” this is disgusting. There have been absolutely no cases of a "man pretending to be a woman" invading the women's bathroom and assaulting people. It has literally never happened. It is a baseless argument frequently used by TERFS (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists) as an excuse to discriminate against trans women. So yeah, at the end of the day she is transphobic. She isn't being cancelled over the one tweet, it's years upon years of microaggressions and then full out transphobia. Also, if it helps, i'd be more than happy to link you to the essay she wrote, as well as her many, many tweets

    It’s so easy to say- “Just stan something else like Percy Jackson!” but that’s not how it works. I will always love Harry Potter and t makes me so sad that people are gonna stop reading these well-written books that, as you said PERFECTLY, are all about love and acceptance when she herself is not being that way. I was very scared and confused. I was scared, thinking- “Do I have these views? Am I just as bad?” So I discussed it with my mom and she said- “We are to love. Are you loving people? Then you’re in the right. You can still love Harry Potter.” And I agree, that J.K. Rowling is the author. She wrote them. But do NOT let her take whatever comfort you found in the series! I personally don't even see a need to have more then three changing rooms. Identify as a man in that one, identify as a woman in this one, and anyone else into this third one. The number of people who would use that one would be so low in the grand scheme of things that the few that do use it would effectively have a changing room to all themselves most of the time.

    When i was 8 years old, I started reading Harry Potter. It became such a light for me in a pretty abusive childhood. It was my escape. The Wizarding World taught me how to be who i am today. It taught me to be open minded and how to be honorable. It taught me that family isn't just blood but the friends we meet and create unbreakable bonds with. It taught me how to live my life as my authentic self. I came out when I was 15 and while my mom was accepting, the rest of my family wasn't so I again found comfort in the Wizarding World. Then I came out as non-binary at 24 just last year. And like you Tess, I had ignored Rowling's previous transphobia thinking there had to be a mistake. The person who had taught me so much acceptance couldn't possibly be against who I am. But after this last round of transphobic tweets..... It absolutely breaks my heart to know who she really is.
    I will continue to love the world of Harry Potter because while Rowling may have written the books, us fans are the ones who made the fandom what it is.

      I understand where you can coming from, but we can’t just ignore the fact that she wrote them. Her values and ideas are all over the books, her good ones and the damaging one. You can absolutely love Harry Potter, but you can’t deny the origin. Take Rita Skeeter as an example.
      Rita sleeker is described as having a heavy jaw and large mannish hands. She is an unregistered animagus who transforms herself so spy on people, in the books she does this to spy on kids. Think about that and then think about how she believes trans women should not be allowed in female public toilets because they can be men in disguise planing to spy on and assault women. She might not have been making this similarity on purpose, but it shows her internalised prejudice and transphobia. She draws from her own imagination and mind, which also holds her other believes.
      Negating things like this negates the negative stereotypes, which is damaging. We need to acknowledge them and realise they are wrong and why.

    I'm very late to this video, but I want to say thank you. I'm transmasculine and neurodivergent, and Harry Potter was my hyperfixation from ages 7 to 15. My brain latched onto the series, the characters (particularly Luna Lovegood), the creatures, everything about it. I even felt less dysphoric in my Luna cosplay, even though you'd think that would make me feel worse. Harry Potter defined my entire childhood, and now, at 19, I've felt lost. I've felt like I can't like the series that provided me with happiness for so much of my life, because its author directly targets hatred and bigotry towards people like me. I've felt guilty for still liking the series itself, despite acting like I don't in public so that people don't try to use it to invalidate my identity. Hearing someone else talk about distancing art from the artist is so incredibly relieving, and you've said it all so eloquently. Thank you so, so much.

      @@wizdumbbk She said "a trans woman is a man in a dress." That's straight up rude, do you not realize this? Also, yes, people are going to be offended, because she is invalidating people. You're getting defensive over people being offended, so why can't they get defensive that she's being rude? Also she said, "if you menstruate, you are a woman. All women menstruate, no men do." However, trans men do, and not all women menstruate. And I'm not just talking about trans women, there are some cis-gendered women who don't menstruate, so apparently according to that logic, they aren't women? People are in their rights to be offended, she's invalidating them. They have worked so hard to be accepted at all, and they found a fandom that accepts and loves them, and all of a sudden, they find out that the woman who wrote the stories to create this fandom doesn't support them. If someone said that everything you know and love about yourself isn't real because it's not "natural", you'd get upset too. Maybe not forever, but in the moment, you're gonna be upset. Especially if they keep saying it to you over and over again. I will admit that some people are overreacting, and I don't understand some people getting upset to an EXTREME amount to the point where they're saying stuff like "JK Rowling should die! Let's burn all the Harry Potter Books! Blah blah blah!" but if you can start getting defensive because it hurt peoples feelings, then they also have a right to get defensive.

    Tessa! Hi! My name is Lyric. That is not my assigned name at birth, but that is the name I identify with.
    I am Genderfluid, for those of you reading this that don't quite know what that means, it's a term that can be under the non-binary umbrella (as non binary means anything different than the two binary genders) that means my gender is 'fluid.' As in, my identity changes sometimes daily, sometimes, I'm feeling a certian way for weeks, sometimes months, and that's hard.
    I've been an avid Harry Potter fan for years. There's posters all over my room, wall stickers, I have multiple sets of the books, I have all of the movies including the two FB movies that are out so far.
    Knowing the author of a series I love and used as an escape is transphobic and doesn't care about changing breaks my heart into a thousand pieces. I feel like I can't love the series anymore, because every time someone mentions it I immediately go to her tweetsx the things she's said, how that affects me.
    So I went looking for a new series. A series with the same fantasy elements that took me somewhere thst wasn't here.
    And i found Percy Jackson and all other Rick Riordian books in the Riordianverse (a bunch of different books series all set in the same universe and connected in some way.) And guess what.
    There's a canon gay character and same sex relationship, there's a Genderfluid character (yay!) And so much representation for minorities (some characters with really good arcs are POC and that makes me super happy, and one character is part native american) and it's all written by one man, older than JK by a few years, who not only wrote these books, but after a movie making company butchered the books with their film adaptations that he didn't foresee or look over, the fans were upset. Harry Potter and other fantasy series get amazing adaptations and they have junk.
    He didn't care about adaptations. It wasn't a want of his, but he cares so much about his fans that now a live-action series for the first book series (Percy Jackson) is becoming a tv show for Disney Plus in the next few years. All because the fans wanted it.
    Even better? The books are set in modern day locations like New York and California in the at least early 2000s (the first installment, The Lightning Thief was released in 2010) and the characters are all demigod children of olympic gods and goddesses from Greek mythology! You actually learn some things about mythology as you read (not everything because Greek Mythology is so varied in books and even when you retell myths) and you fall in love and associate with the characters more because most of the children are around 11-12 at the start of the series, and much like Harry Potter, you grow with the characters. And most of the demigods (I say most because there are rare exceptions) have ADHD and Dyslexia, both of which have to do with their godly bloodline (ADHD to keep them focused in battle, Dyslexia because their brains are hotwired to understand ancient Greek more than English) which kids can relate to!
    Just thought you'd want a recommendation if you don't already know about him and his books. He's super amazing and is a huge advocate for minorities! Percy Jackson and The Lightning Theif is what started it all for me.

      I really think people did not listen to JK or maybe we no longer have the capacity to understand each other. JK is a writer so to her words matter. Words must have a definition. A definition, by its very nature, is exclusive. I guarantee you could change JK's mind if you had a solid definition of the words man, woman, Gender, Gender roles, gender identity and gender expression. Whenever I hear people talk about these things they speak of them as if they dont exist, but at the same time require that you acknowledge them. They use Gender and gender roles and gender identity interchangeably as if they are all the same thing. The problem people have is not hate, its that they dont believe what you are saying makes any sense. once you can communicate your position better JK would change her mind

      People who talk of these things incorrectly, loudly and ignorantly, are our oppressers, or in some cases are members of the community who have internalised or immitated their oppression either because it is so prevalent, or to keep themselves safe,
      There are in fact, generally accepted definitions for all these words and terms, that take the bare minimum of googling.
      There are countless in depth websites and articles that explain these things, communities dedicated to education, youtube videos and channels full of invormation, education, and personal stories. There are even scientific studies, medical definitions, and articles in medical and psychiatric journals, including scientific proof of trans people's experiences, social studies on the impacts of gender iodentity, diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria, and of course medical information on the existence and diversity of intersex people.
      There have been public information campaigns, and trans people making themselves personally available to explain things.
      Or, you know, you could check a modern dictionary.
      As for this mentality that if we just fought our oppressers in the Right Way(tm) our oppression would be over is not only bullshit, it's offensive.
      But it is so much easier to think: Huh, those people only have themselves to blame. Than to realise that society treats a whole group of people terribly, and has for centuries, simply because of the way they were born.
      At some point it stops being our job to just Shout Louder (but in the right NICE Way), and starts being everybody else's responsibility to stop closing their minds. Including JKR.
      If she wants to spread hate, harm, and misinformation, while wilfully ignoring the massive amounts of correct and easily available info. It is not our job to roll over and just explain ourselves' better' because surely this time she'll listen...

      Makayla M I understand where you can coming from, but we can’t just ignore the fact that she wrote them.

    I am really thankful you made this video. I am a transman who loves the Harry Potter books and universe. the series and fandom have always made me feel happy and safe and have always been something I sought comfort in growing up. Needless to say, Harry Potter meant a lot to me, still means a lot to me. When Jk Rowling said what she did and made her thoughts clear about my fellow trans people. It hurt more than I can say, someone I grew up loving saying such hurtful things.... one thing I knew though is I didn't want her to hurt my love for Harry Potter. A lot of my Family judges me for doing this, telling me that I am wrong to still love Harry Potter...I do what I can- but I cant just decide not to love something so personal over night....its hard because I feel so lost with it all. but its always so comforting to be validated and told, its okay to love the art, it doesn't mean I support or back what the artist is saying by doing so. So again thank you so much, even though it seems a bit silly XD

    A few years ago I was at Leaky Con and I didn’t have my phone and couldn’t contact my mother, I don’t live in the city and had no friends at the convention, thus I was a ball of pure anxiety. I didn’t know what to do or who to ask for help, so I asked Tessa, she made me feel safe, and supported and helped me out when I was vulnerable and didn’t know what to do, and I eventually got a hold of my mom. Fast forward to a few months ago, I came out as gender fluid, I told my friends and family, and some of my family members were upset and didn’t get it, why did I need to be so different, I was already a lesbian, wasn’t that enough? Even my own mom is uncomfortable with it. I found acceptance and peace in re reading my Harry Potter books again, and then I found out that JK Rowling is transphobic, and probably doesn’t value me or see me as a real person. At first I thought “this is just so karmic bs, and maybe this is my fault, maybe this is the universe trying to tell me that I am too much, to go back into the closet.” But here’s Tessa again, her along with the rest of the Harry Potter community, lifting me up, and making me feel loved and accepted, and brave. Brace enough to correct my parents when the use the wrong pronouns (sometimes, I’m still a ball of anxiety), brave enough to order a binder when my mom said no, brave enough to put my pride flags back up, and to cut and dye my hair. Thank you for making me feel loved, and brave, and supported, at two of the most vulnerable points in my life.

    I know you might not be reading this but I want to say thank you Tessa. Because I have been having a hard time with everything that is going on and from the year before. What you said in this whole video inspired me. Also, at the end when you said those words I needed to hear that. I have been bullied and hated my whole life and I have been drifting apart from my family during quarantine since I like different things and think about things differently from them so I didn’t really get comfort from this time. I am starting 7th grade in September and I am terrified of that and about Corona. I lost my grandpa last year and my uncles pet. I don’t want to lose more people but my grandma from my dads side is in the hospital because of an infection that is getting worse and I am going into Harry Potter to make me feel better and escape this world that is battling against each other and is in quarantine. I agree 💯 with every word you said. I want to say that J.K Rowling said everything Dumbledore said by creating it. Dumbledore said “It is our Choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities” that is what J.K wrote well J.K it is who we’re inside and our choices that show who we’re far more than our abilities and what gender we’re because all of us are beautiful inside and out in our own way. I a 12 year old that loves Harry Potter and I will till my last moment on earth but what you’re saying is going against everything you wrote in Harry Potter. If you dig deeper into the story Voldemort wants to get rid of Muggles, Muggle not a, and Halfbloods so that Purebloods are alive. Well in this case it’s like she wants just straight people who are the genders that they are but everyone is magical in their own way and they can love who they are and we love them for who they are no matter what.

    i'm a trans man, my parents don't know cause they're transphobic, so i'm living a girls life... harry potter taught me to accept myself and that won't change, i will love the creation without loving the creator, she broke my heart, my girlfriend burnt her merch, i'm keeping mine though and i'll only buy unofficial merch.

      Did she say transmen do not menstrate? Nope. She said women do, which is a fact. Why is this about you?

      @aeronhoare7706 Před 4 lety +9

      @@crimetimewithjess5366 she equated people who menstrauted to women for one thing. This means she believes that everyone who menstrautes is a woman, and this erases trans men and some NB folk. It also means she believes everyone who doesn't menstraute isn't a woman, which erases trans women

      Matthew Hoare also it would technically mean cisgender women who can’t menstruate aren’t women either 😂

      @@mattnelson8407 Yes basically older women and pre puberty girls are not women (since they don't menstruate ) according to Miss Rowling. Dangerous view to uphold.

    I’m so disappointed in her. One of my friends is trans and she (like me) has a slight addiction to Harry Potter. J. K. was my childhood hero, my role model and she let me down. I hope she gets the message.

    Tessa thank you so much for this. I’m a non binary Harry Potter fan who felt really hurt by this. But hearing you talk about it really made me feel better about this whole thing. Thank you so much 💜

    I really hope Rowling changes, it saddens me knowing that the person I had looked up to for so long is saying some very harmful things about *human beings* who have every right to exist.
