EPIDEMIC SOUND: share.epidemics...
Filmmakers never talk about how important sound is and how much it does for a video. Im a firm beliver in "if your videos sound better they look better"
#sonyfx3 #anamorphic #cinematicvideo #documentary #cinemacamera #cinematic #cinematography #filmmaking #cinematic #cheatcodes #filmmakingtips
My therapist told me to find a healthy outlet for my anxiety. I present to you: watching someone meticulously thread a needle in and out of fabric with soothing music swelling in the background. Is this peak human experience, or a metaphor for the futility of existence? I'm not sure, but my existential dread has never looked so aesthetically pleasing.
For what its worth, you are the reason I picked up a camera, and it has been one of the most fulfilling journeys of my life.
Your use of ambient sound to put viewers in the scene is always 100% spot on, and one of the many reasons I recommend your channel to all of my students. Keep up the great work V, and from one born and rasised Michigander to another, GO LIONS!
Let’s go man I truly appreciate all of your support! #onepride
Stumbled upon this channel contemplating XH2S versus FX3. Your blend of audio-visuals and content is quite refreshing…like Stardate (radio serial) but for the art world. Don’t fold to pumping out content faster and faster to meet the need for ‘likes’ and all of that frivolous crap. You take your time making content YOUR way. Great job!
Buy the xh2s , you get best of both worlds and better codecs
Hey, audio guy here!
I'd like to give some infos about mics.
So the one your talking into (the shure sm7b) is not considered a "caridoit" mic but a dynamic mic. Dynamic mics are best used for either loud things like snare drums or guitar amps, or for recordings where you don't want to here a lot of the room (live singers for example). They take in sound in a cardioid pattern, wich means (basically) that they pick up sound in mainly one direction (mostly front, a bit sides as well) and you have to be pretty close.
Other patterns would be for example: omnidirectional (picks up sound from every direction) or figure 8 (picks up sound from both the front and the back)
Besides dynamic mics there are also condenser mics. These typically need 48volts of phantom power to run. The differences between these two types of mics are that dynamics, besides the facts that i already stated, don't pick up the entire frequency spectrum of 20-20K herz. Condensers do and they are more sound sensitive, so they won't block out room sound as well as a dynamic.(hence they are mostly used for studio recordings, cause you need a treated room, but get better sound quality)
For film making shotgun mics are mostly used, cause they work directional. They are kinda working with a cardioid pattern..but on steroid haha. They block out everything from the back and the sides and only pick up what they are pointed at.
I hope that helps at least a little bit. Of course there are way more types of mics amd patterns, but these are the most common ones.
So here are some little tips, if your a film maker looking to buy a mic:
-Don't buy a ribbon mic (not very versatile)
-And please don't buy a usb mic (they always sound pretty bad)
-if your just starting out and want one mic to do it all, get a larve mic (but please for the love of god, use it as intended. That means put it on your damn top or sweater or whatever you are wearing. DO NOT hold it in your hand and speak directly into it, they are nit designed for that and it shows)
-you could also buy a field recorder. These can be relatively cheap, mostly come with multiple extra mic inputs and different attachment-mics (for example a shotgun attachment or a stereo one)
Cheers!
What is your take on mics like the new DJI mic and the Rode wireless mic things that have 32 bit float and I’m pretty sure are omnidirectional. How well would this work in a filmmaking context from your pov?
Shure SM7B is indeed a cardioid microphone. Dynamic and condenser refer to the way the microphone is constructed. Dynamic microphones utilise a diaphragm attached to a coil within a magnetic field, generating an electrical current when sound waves hit it, while condenser microphones employ a diaphragm placed close to a backplate, forming a capacitor that varies its electrical charge in response to sound waves, resulting in differing construction mechanisms with distinct applications in audio recording. Cardioid, on the other hand, refers to the pickup pattern of the microphone- this pattern is heart shaped and picks up sound mostly from the front, a bit less on the sides, and has a null at the back.
@@photopracticum that's what i said tho. You just wouldn't call it a cardioid mic, but a dynamic mic. Because it doesn't matter if it's dynamic or condenser or ribbon, is can have a cardioid patter (and sometimes mics have multiple patterns, so it wouldn't make sense to categorize mics based off of them)
@@QKvox i don't know this one, so i'd have to take a look at it first. But for me personally, i'd rather not use omnidirectional ones, cause you'd pick up a lot of sound that you wouldn't nesseccarily want to pick up, given that it could be quite unfocused. Let's just say: there is a reason why shotgun mics are often used in film production haha
@@martmakesmusic My point is that you can call it both dynamic and cardioid because it is both a dynamic and a cardioid. Sometimes you will want to use a cardioid mic, regardless of it being a condenser or dynamic or ribbon.
In audiovisual, audio comes first for a reason ! great video and sound design is on point 🔥
You should come in Europe, I Have the feeling that your creativity and work could match with project that we have here in France or UK. Many music artist are looking for people like you.
Fellow Michigander… GO LIONs!! I have such admiration for sound engineers, sound designers, and editors. As a one man band, I do wish I had more time to focus on using more sound samples in my editing. The extent of my use is just using silent pauses in music. Keep on keepin on!
Sound makes 70% for a video. Beautiful work. Very enjoyable to watch and to listen to ❤ THANKS
Yoooo make a video showing you filming yourself and the process! I would love to see it man
Glad to see people still rocking the 4:3 aspect ratio!
It was also used in the recent movie "Saltburn"
Yo, great information and examples. Being that I am a sound engineer this element of visual content is extremely important. I appreciate you Vuhlandes.
Love the coloring, sounds, subtle music and close-ups, really intimate amazing feeling ❤
Look forward to every video! Thank you for making such educational art. 🥰
And GO LIONS!
Your cat warped in and out near the end of the video, which was awesome, thanks for sharing these tidbits of knowledge much appreciated.
There is 3 main types of microphones only :
-Dynamic
-Condenser
-Ribbon
They all can have the same differents directivity pickup pattern (from picking up sound 360* to a really narrow angle)
-Omni
-Cardoid
-Supercardioid
-HyperCardioid
-Figure of eight or bi-directionnal
-Shotgun
you just got to learn about Bit depth, Sample Rate, and Audio levels and your all set, you can learn all this in one week no problem and youll know pretty much everything.
This video definitely came at a great time , since watching your channel and seeing the use of audio in your visuals and sound design , being pushing myself more to include that in my work and visuals and I can see a significant difference in the results
Sound is everything man 👏🏼
Always with another banger💯 don’t be having them cats waiting😭😭😭
Bro your videos are therapeutic
I’m so locked in on this channel. CZcams recommended me and bro from my city. I want to be a filmmaker but have no idea where to start. Lacking the knowledge of what I’m doing fr.
Your mic is dynamic it catches what’s right in front of it 🙏🏽🙂
Finally my boy dropped some new heat !!!
Love your videos bro. Im not even a filmmaker but I still end up watching all your stuff 😂
This is beautiful
You’re beautiful
Babe wake up vuhlandes just uploaded 😌
It's funny how the MKE 600 is literally saved on my wish-list for months already, I think you just gave me the final nudge to buy it !
dope video bro… you always dropping game! its funny cuz’ you were the first one (that I seen) mention how the 4:3 aspect ratio is making a comeback.
now it seems like every rap music video that come out these days was shot in 4:3.
i slick believe you helped start that trend 🔥
big win for them Lions. Glad to see you reppin! Dope video bro
The hair cut and retwist looks great my guy
Brazilian here. Amazing chanel!
Incredible work vuh! Since I have discovered sound design it is my favorite part in the edit, after color grading.
From Detroit here ! Yo I love your approach at filmmaking and your approach and taking such good shots. I would love to learn fr and collaborate
Love the content bro! Very inspiring! 🔥🙏🏼
Glad to see you not quitting… a lot on creators are quitting CZcams..
The start of this video was so beautiful! Honestly, just props and congrats for having made that!
it’s 12pm in China, lucky to see your newest video.
thanks for your videos. Your chanel is my daily inspiration to go out and shoot and I hope that mentioning that your videos have reached me in germany might give you some boost 🤙
Great points. You can get used to bad picture quality if the audio is good but it's hard to do the opposite.
The style always reminds me of Hiro Murai, good stuff!
your videos are really very aesthetic, thank you so much for sharing your amazing skills with you, so appreciate it
Excellent! I got so much to learn! Thanks for your insights, helpful as always!
Just bought your "klean pack" and omg just know you're the goat bro imma be making quailty content now
Your videos are amazing. Do you have one talking about your eye-candying colle grading? Thank u
relaxing, amazing, beautiful sound editing
That's so beautiful! Makes me want to learn how to sew and buy the same sewing machine 👀
My guy is talented!!
Everything is good and everything is correct.
But why filmmakers don't want me to know that?
I've seen over 20 videos of filmmakers saying,
how important sound is in film. So please don't be absurd.
I love you bro. The art you give to the world is beautiful fam, we need more human beings like you! Such an inspiration my boi . Peace and Love 🫶🏽….. #SoundDesignBITCH🤞🏽
Great advice. Will try to implement it on my next videos.
Thank you so much!
I’m here the channel is on fire 🔥
This is beyond helpful and so damn accurate.
You're doing great bro❤ Love from Nigeria🟩
Wow the sounds are soo crisssp
Could you maybe one day make a video about your color grading process please,. It would be helpful because I am a student filmmaker who's always inspired by these contents, specifically your looks
You have quite the eye! (And ear) lol but damn you are great and your in-depth explanations of how you approach your filming makes you stand out! Excellent!
im fairly new to the channel but have been watching for a couple weeks now on my own videography journey. I have been doing ASMR youtube content for over a year now and watching this video inspires me to create cinematic ASMR because of the asmr aspects of this video. Also, You can cut loccs? I didnt know that. Been growin mine since 08 and been wanting to cut em but not off. Thanks for the game bro
Loved! Beautiful sound, color and design. So soothing. (I'm a sewer) (I have a request. Would you speak into your camera?)❤
Sick video as allways!
Thanks my guy ❤
Spitting facts as usual
Good piece this. Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much for this! This is amazing and helpful. May I ask the name of the mic you used in the talking video?
Bro humbly the best film maker on CZcams 😂
What a treat for my ears. What lens and aperture did you use in the opening video? The bokeh is just crazy
Another great video. Thank you 🙏🏼
satisfying af
Sennheiser should sponsor you - just bought a MKE600 because of this as I was thinking about it anyways.
Hey @vuhlandes! Great to see a new video, and happy new year! Still waiting on an email back from you. We’re almost coming up on the one year anniversary of me ordering a print from your website that I still haven’t received. Hoping to see a reply from the email I sent you soon. Maybe I can give it to my boyfriend for his birthday *this* year 🎉
Hi! I am also waiting for a print, although I did see Vuhlandes replied to one of your previous comments asking you to DM him asap, or reply to the comment you had left 😊 hope this helps!
@@ThatGingerPhotographer that is helpful because why when he responds does CZcams say nothing, but when you respond I get an email?? I did go back and find that comment, and I’ve already DM’d his Instagram in the past to no avail. I even emailed him like he asked but he hasn’t responded. CZcams won’t even notify me when he uploads even though I rang the bell. Very frustrated with this.
Thanks for Passing The Energy
. Why it say subscribe I've been subscribed a long time now. Hmm. Using these sound tips in my video.
Pass The Energy
Why wouldn't they want me to know?
I never met a filmmaker that didn’t want me to know. Maybe my circle is just more positive
what anamorphic lens do you recommend for the fx3
Tutorial on how to have white eyes like this
Great video!! Why don’t filmmakers want other filmmakers to know about sound design?
Clickbait.
ty soo much love it!!! please i have a question 4you can i connect this mic to my iphone13?
How Are you Color Grading for Darker Skin Complexions , be a video topic me an my friends would appreciate.🤞🏾
amazing!
color grading tutorial please
Is MKE600 the only shotgun you own? was watching another video of yours and couldn't tell the mic, but it looked like a Schoeps or DPA
great videos!
Hey @vuhlandes good stuff like always. Would i be able to kindly ask how do you normally mount your MKE 600. Do you have a stand on the side or you mount it directly on camera? Thanks a lot!
Can you tel me what is the 120 analog camera you put a film roll into?
When are you going to collab with @gxace ? As a former Michigander of 26 years, I love seeing Michigan people make cool shit and it seems like you two could do something wild/unexpected
Hopefully someday we can find a way to collaborate together that would be super dope!
Cool video! What camera /lens did you shoot with? What Lut did you used?
Wuhlandes‼️
Are you using the XLR handle with the MK600 if yeah how are you fitting it?
Go lions
What is the name of this camera and lense ?
neutral grey paint...
live in midwest, states. anyone know brand/codes/specs from lowe's, home depot, sherwin williams, or walmart? if not, amazon?
i bought your luts and they all seem so dark and strong in most of my shots, can you explain how to use them
Try turning the intensity down and doing a slight color grade and correction. I hope that helps. That’s how I use them
nice thumbnail
Love ur video,
My man using copywriting title headline hacks from the 2010s 😂
Need to up my audio game for sure 😅
Trying to reach you everywhere. I have a preset problem. Need your help.
I would like to buy your lut pack but ive read reviews saying it doesnt work and some say it works, that you take ages to reply back to them or fix the issue.. I never got why creators dont resolve the issue.. your “fans” are basically the ones paying for your content.. lol its crazy.
whats your cooking show profile?
James Cameron says in a movie, the sound is 80%. If it's true for him, I won't argue...
Solid advice although, if Niners beat the lions in the NFC Championship, you owe me a new camera lens. #Bangbangninergang
