Join me for an overnight, 120-mile adventure on the Schuylkill River Trail from Philadelphia to Reading (and back). While I’m sure this trail is gorgeous in the summer and fall months, winter provided its own beauty. This ride occurred in late January, 2023.
Stay tuned at the end of the video for tips on navigating a few confusing gaps in the trail.

I really enjoyed the video! I loved seeing you experience the parts of the trail that my girlfriend and I routinely ride between Valley Forge and Reading, and particularly between Pottstown and Birdsboro. FYI, the easiest current way to get from Kenilworth (the Sunoco station) to Industrial Highway in Pottstown is to proceed west on Rt. 724, turn right on Keim Street (instead of going all the way to South Hanover Street), and cross the abandoned Keim Street bridge .A connector is being constructed between those points, which includes crossing the bridge on RT. 422, the one on which you encountered the dead end and locked gate. Again, great video!

Late march 2020 I was on the trail around 6am, I was approximately in douglassville.
A huge black cat as large as me passed the trail in front of me.
I have seen lots of animals on the trail, my favorite are the nocturnal ones. I never imagined seeing a huge black cat!!
In the moment I remember my thoughts being ‘ I’m never going to see this ever again in the wild’
I stopped pedaling but I did not hit my brakes. I coasted towards the animal, as it crossed the trail in front of me (which is about 12 feet wide there) it glanced in my direction and just kept on its way.
In about 2 seconds I reached where the animal crossed. I couldn’t hear it, see it , or smell it.
The location where I saw the animal is right where the big beautiful bridge is between Pottstown and Douglassville.
When I did my research I learned that black panthers lived in berks county in the late 1800s….
Just because they haven’t been seen doesn’t mean they aren’t still there 🙂 I saw one 😃

I watch quite a few of your videos and they all have one thing in common; the video hesitates and then starts back up maybe 1/2 second from where it stopped. This quite common with a memory card that isn't fast enough. A good Sandisk Extreme card will stop it and if you are already using one, it's a bad card. Most digital cameras save footage in chunks just in-case something happens so you won't lose all the footage.

    • @RideAlongAdventures
      @RideAlongAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

Hi, David. Thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback but I’m just not sure what you’re saying. I use an extreme pro card for the speed, as you said. Actually I switch between three pro cards on most tours. I’ve watched a mess of clips and I just don’t see the hesitation (lag?). Any additional insights would be great. Thanks again. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.

This is my local trail since I live near Valley Forge Park. You did a very good job considering you had overcast to deal with and it was winter. As a local I highly recommend a spring or fall trip on the trail. I never did the entire trail at one shot, but have covered the length doing segments. The Pottstown mess is supposed to be fixed by 2025. They have the funding and are doing the final design. Very creative of you to lift your bike around the fence. If I was running on fumes I'm not sure I would have thought of that. Also, there is a long term plan to route the trail over the Wissahickon Creek just prior to Manayunk. I'm unsure if that will be completed in my lifetime.
If you do it again and record another video, I recommend warmer weather stops in Manayunk, Conshy Brewing, Phoenixville (Main St) and Pottstown. The beverage and food opportunities are awesome. The trail has so much more life to it in the nice weather. A downside of the other seasons is you don't see much of the river as the green tunnel hides the river. You also get a more pronounced aroma of the sewage treatment plants in every other town along the way. Still a worthy trek.

What a great video that I found thoroughly entertaining! This is my "Home Trail" as I live two miles from the Audubon Trail head and ride portions of it often. I have ridden it north to the dreaded gap, and your difficulties confirmed all my doubts. I appreciate your workarounds for this obstacle as well. One recommendation I would make to you, and your audience is riding the trail south of the art museum until its end. It is a dead end with no parking or (sometimes available) amenities like the art museum, but it takes you on a beautiful ride on a dedicated trail that is suspended over the river on that same Eastern Bank.

“Signs are expensive, apparently. This is Pottstown and…uh…it is unclear.” LOL 😂
Did you run a lot of ice or super soft spots on the ride? I ride the GAP religiously during the warmer (and longer daylight) months but never dared to during the winter for lack of sunlight and for worry of hitting a patch of ice or soft mucky spots and eating it.

Surprisingly, there wasn’t much in the way of ice. A few patches. Yeah, it got soft on the second day around Reading. It was just so nice to get out. I probably would have ridden in snow. There are only so many miles I can do on a trainer. and, yes, the signage was confusing. I don’t know what they intend to do at Pottstown. 😉 the poor guy at that Sunoco station must get nonstop questions.
      thanks for watching!

So the ride into Pottstown. I assume that the trail path is not finished yet that takes you over? What route and road do you recommend to get over the river to the north side?

To add. I saw your way back. Yes. They haven’t finished on that bridge over the river. Lol. It’s *supposedly* going to be done within the next year.

It’s a good question, Tara. As I said in the video, if you are headed northwesterly, you can head over the bridge and make your way to Pottstown. The actual bike lane is closed at this moment. It looks like they might be working more on this area. Funding? OR you can stay on the same side of the river and turn right onto S Hanover St and head into Pottstown. It’s narrow and busy but it’s your best bet if headed southeasterly. That’s my two cents. It’s a short distance regardless and I wouldn’t let it discourage you from a long ride.

Thanks for the advice! I stopped at Parker ford before because the newer part wasn’t even a thought at the time. I’m happy to see they are at least trying to close the gaps? Your video was very helpful in seeing this end of the trail.

@@taracr2984 Tara, let me know if you find a different (better) path around Pottstown. If you’ve watched any of my other videos, I’m “directionally challenged” so I could be talking out of my…rear panniers.
