  • I managed to coordinate a five-day adventure on the Ohio to Erie Trail, starting in my hometown of Cincinnati (though I currently live in Delaware), about 220 miles to just north of Millersburg. The gorgeous fall weather was amazingly beautiful and I couldn’t help but reflect on the wonder of life, its preciousness and how it is reflected in the people around me/us.
    Rest in peace, Bobby Knight 🙏

    We just re-visited the Ohio to Erie trail heading south outside of Columbus, and 4 Scotsmen were heading north. They started in Cincy, and it was so cool-they were riding in their kilts. Awesome stuff- you never know who you'll run in to.

    Hello Brian, you’re not gonna believe this but I was watching this video today of the Ohio to Erie Trail and if I’m not mistaken the thermos you found is mine. I rode from Mount Vernon out to Glenmont on September 24 and also on October 24. On October 24 I had stopped at the top of the pass to take a drink of coffee. Once I got to Glenmont, I discovered I had left my thermos behind. When I returned to the top of the hill it was gone. I ride a yellow recumbent Cat trike If this was the date you were on the trail it has to be mine. If it’s not mine there are two idiots on the trail that have lost thermoses. I am a newer subscriber and I love your videos. I’ve watched many of them. Please enjoy the thermos if you kept it I have since replaced it. I generally carry one with me whenever I am riding in cold weather. Happy trails P.S. this just blew my mind….

    • @RideAlongAdventures
      @RideAlongAdventures  Před 5 měsíci

      😳 wow. No, I left it by the signboard, just off the trail. You may not recall but we spoke for a bit. Not long. I turned to read the signs when you left and then I noticed your thermos. Bummer, that was a good one. Man, it’s a small world out there!!!!!

    • @RideAlongAdventures
      @RideAlongAdventures  Před 5 měsíci

      Sorry…just reread your message. The guy I spoke with went towards Mt Vernon, not Glenmont because that’s what I was talking to him about (whether the trail is going to be extended and bypass Glenmont in the future). I can’t quite recall why I thought it was his thermos. Anyway…I put it by the sign because it was sitting on the path.

    Brian, I happened to stumble upon this unusual fact about Cincinnati:
    Facts About McDonald's Filet-O-Fish
    McDonald's Filet-O-Fish has religious roots.
    A little-known fact about the Filet-O-Fish is that it was born in 1960s Cincinnati. This might strike some as odd, seeing that Ohio doesn't have a coastline and isn't exactly known for its seafood. However, the local cuisine wasn't a factor. Instead, it was the local religion that spurred on this sandwich.
    It all started with Lou Groen, the owner of Cincinnati's first McDonald's franchise. He quickly noticed sales plummeted on Fridays because its clientele didn't consume meat. While this is common during Lent, some devout Catholics abstain from meat every Friday year-round. And up until 1966, official Catholic Church law actually prohibited it. With a high Catholic population, Cincinnatians were paying penance rather than paying for burgers.
    In 1962, Lou Groen took matters into his own hands by coming up with a meatless replacement for the burger. In an interview with USA Today, Groen explained: "I invented my fish sandwich, developed a special batter, made the tartar sauce, and took it to headquarters ... My fish sandwich was the first addition ever to McDonald's original menu. It saved my franchise."

    Thanks for another trip, Bryan. I loved your dialogue.😅 All the memories you share and the impressions they made on you were great.
    It takes a certain amount of sensitivity to remember stuff over the years. If we're not sensitive we don't get impressions that project into our memory banks.
    Yes, thankfulness is all about living. Knowing what could have happened but didn't... having experienced both. You got have both in order to be thankful.
    I go through the same things as you shared realizing how thankful I am for what God has provided. Knowing that He does stuff to show us how much He cares.😢
    I'm about half way through viewing and will comment further when I'm finished.

      Thanks, Gord. Agreed all around. I think I’m learning that thankfulness is deliberate, not something that just happens. Took 57 years to figure that out. 😄 of course, it helps to be around areas of my childhood to bring out those feelings so strongly. Thanks again for watching. I’m on the GAP right now. Super overcast, rainy and COLD!!! Glad I brought thermal pants because I’m going to need them. Might even get some snow on Wednesday!

      @@RideAlongAdventures Thanks Bryan... Sorry your Gap trip is cold and rainy. I know you make lemons into lemonade and that is always great to see.
      Regarding thankfulness. Yes, at times we just decide to be thankful with the lemons. But there are many other times when I just find myself thankful because I haven't always had pleasant events in my life.
      But it's those hard life events that will make heartfelt thankfulness real and not just a willful exercise of faith. But both are real, yet very different.

    Where was the first NFL game played in history?
    DAYTON, OH
    In 1920, Dayton Triangles team manager Carl Storck attended the first-ever organizational meeting and a few weeks later, on October 3, 1920, the Triangles hosted the first-ever NFL game against the Columbus Panhandles at Triangle Park, winning 14-0.

That's a globally consistent source of happiness. :) When I was a kid, we used to go to the Bracken County Fair (in KY) and there was just nothing like that homemade ice cream. I was supremely proud of my aunt who won 1st place one year for her peach ice cream. I never looked at her the same afterwards (for 50-ish years???). The Beekman's ice cream in Iowa (RAGBRAI) was incredibly close. I don't know how to describe it except that it has a more icy quality to it rather than real thick cream. Does that make sense? This video was so much fun! You must have worked hard investigating all of the history of your ride. Now, for the length of the vid, I am a 9-1-1 dispatcher, so I sit on my butt for 10-12 hours per shift - so....the longer, the betta!! I watch your first OTET often when it's quiet here.
    I just watched a video of the Ghost Town Trail east of Pittsburgh, have you tried or plan on riding that one?
    Did you watch Denise Looking Out ride this? She got caught in a near tornado, a large chunk of the trail was trashed and she had to detour.
    Again, thanks for sharing your rides, I look forward to each and every one!
    Beautiful ending shot!!

      Thanks. My buddy, Bob, shot that along with some other cool, fall scenes. I really think I've got to get back into the drone thing. I simply compile as much little snippets as I can from a variety of sources (some seem to get it about half right). I just like to know what's going on in the areas I'm headed. Sort of brings it to life.
      yeah, I rode the Ghost Town Trail back in June...ironically, there was a tornado alert that day as well!!!!!!
      I really like Denise's channel. Good stuff. She is quite the adventurer.
      Thanks again for watching!

    I enjoyed your factoids, graphics and deep thoughts. Great wrap up and ending scene on the country road in Holmes county. I really enjoyed the fall colors along the way. I'm sorry Columbus was more of a puzzle than usual, the road was closed near McKinley and detoured to Harrison (a tie in to your Presidents list as well.) I think you went to Broad and ended up on the wrong side of the river, so I see why it was so fubar. You did find the rack bolts though, so that was a great happening! Oh and yes, I knew all 8 Ohio Presidents 9, 18, 19, 20, 23, 25, 27 and 29

      Re: Columbus…I think one of the funniest moments was seeing that one lone OTET sign at one point and then no more. Like ‘oh yeah…I’m right!’ Then ‘oh no, I’m not’
      I just finished the GAP yesterday. The leaves are basically all down so I’m glad I didn’t wait for the OTET. It was indeed a blaze of color.
      Thanks for watching, Jody. Hope you have a great remaining fall.
      Ps…your name suddenly hit me-you’re the Director! Can’t tell you how much I love this trail. As a proud native Ohioan, it just brings out so much of the state at its best. I greatly appreciate what your organization does to make this so beautiful. 🙏

    Great video!! ❤❤❤ As a native of the Buckeye state, I highly endorse this video!
    One of the many great things about the OTET route is the opportunity to experience the rural and urban landscapes and communities Ohio has to offer. We are a very underrated state.
    LOVE the return of “Unrequested History” highlighting Ohio history.
    The trail from South Charleston to London is a bit monotonous - corn fields, soybean fields, more corn fields and more soybean fields - so, it’s no surprise your mind filled with a bunch of random thoughts 🤣 Seriously though, I really appreciate your reflections about thankfulness and couldn’t agree more.
    I completed the Northbound OTET in 2021, so this video brought back some great memories. (It rained the first day of my ride, too!, and I got lost in Cleveland). I had planned to ride it Southbound this summer, but I saw the numerous trail closures for construction, plus the Canadian wildfire smoke was still a factor, so I cancelled it. Looks like a Fall trip would be fun.

    Trail looks interesting. How do you get back to the start and your car? I looked online and there doesn't look to be much in the way of a shuttle available without going all-in on a tour. I loved riding the GAP/C&O and Erie Canal because all stops are serviced by Amtrak. Any suggestions?

    • @RideAlongAdventures
      @RideAlongAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

      yeah, good question. A few years ago, I think there were a half dozen options but looks like a lot of them went out of business. Here is one that a friend of mine used over the summer: zipitransit.com/
      I'm sure it's a tough business. Agreed on the GAP/C&O and Erie convenience with Amtrak. Makes it so much easier.
      My first OTET ride, I rented a car with my buddy and we drove from Cincy to Cleveland and then biked back. That was surprisingly affordable. I'm planning on doing that this Spring with the Natchez Trace. The shuttle services are crazy expensive.
      Hope that helps.

      @@RideAlongAdventures thanks for the response! I watch many of your videos and use them and others to find new trails to explore. I retired about a year ago and I’m debating on filming my rides. I’ve posted some stories, calling them adventures on Facebook which to my surprise, people like to read because my Fat Bike “Brewster” is a character which people enjoy. My best and latest were of my recent trip to Florida. I live in NE Ohio and am looking for trails that don’t take more than a week to enjoy. You seem to always have a good choices of rides to choose from. So I’m always critiquing the videos to see what would make for good content.
