    Very nice video and the music fits very well.
    A low-cost desulfator would be a nice addition to your process: you could add/remove water from the cells according to the desulfation boiling process, thus making sure your cells are properly filled.
    Of course in case a battery is truly dead, we should keep in mind that fresh replacement batteries are quite cheap!

    • @TechTronic9000

      Thank you for the comment ! Yes a desulfation would be a great addition to restoration procedure but i don't want to waste to many resources and time. If the battery would not charge after adding water then it's time for a replacement. Credits for the music go to Josh Woodward (more info in video description).

    Thanks a lot. I came to this video while looking for a solution for my PCM UPS which suddenly started occasionally turn itself off with an overload light shining. It confused the hell out of me because I have not changed anything in my hardware config and there's no way it can be overloaded. Thanks to your video, now I know that it might falsely report overload because of the bad battery. My UPS has worked fine for two years already, so maybe the battery has vented. What troubles me is that it doesn't show low battery level at all, battery indicator always shows full when the problem with overload happens. And it doesn't turn itself off immediately when left running on batteries. But the battery indicator itself should be fine - it has been running on batteries couple of times and the indicator was showing pretty accurate levels.
    I'll test the battery as shown on your video and I hope that it will turn out to be battery fault, not UPS.

      I also remembered how my father used to recover his lead acid batteries for his motorcycle - he was using freshly fallen snow instead of distilled water, and it worked just fine. I'm not sure, though that I should risk and use the snow for my UPS batteries :D

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 10 lety +2

      camelCased
      Hi there ! Thanks for your appreciation ! From what you describe it seems indeed that the battery has vented and lost most of it's capacity. When venting the battery will charge fast and also discharge fast giving exactly the same behavior as you describe. Also take note of the battery placement inside the ups, if it's close to the main transformer it will overheat and dry out (this happens to a lot of UPS models). APC uses a plastic separator which keeps the heat away from the battery giving it a better an longer life. By the way fresh clean snow and / or rainwater is better than tap water as it's naturally distilled water. There are some minor contaminants from air pollution and possible ground contact but in an emergency or in a clean zone (forest, mountain etc.) it can be used.

  • @MrStylianos1
    @MrStylianos1 Před 2 lety +2

    When I opened the APC 950 the battery was dead and started to leak some oil when I caught it, I gave it for recycling and put it in CSB HR1234W or CSB GP1272 F2 which are just as compatible.

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 2 lety

      Probably the battery case cracked and that was acid/gel oozing out. It's rather common on the APC brand as they get very hot even on stand by so it dries up the battery and kills it.

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 9 lety +1

      darkjay263 Depending on the UPS model / type, it may be possible to charge the battery directly with it. This model of APC does charge the battery when it's OFF. Turing it on with the flat battery will only give errors. If you have access to a multimeter it's better to check if you have around 13.5-13.8 V at the battery terminals to be sure that the charging process is working.

  • @souvikghosh9172
    @souvikghosh9172 Před 8 lety +2

    After long use, the Sulfuric acid becomes weaker, along with the decrement of the water capacity(decrease of dilution).
    So, I think, to recover a lead acid battery, there are two options:
    1) to add some distilled water,
    2) to add some Sulfuric acid.
    Please focus something on the addition of sulfuric acid. I think adding Sulfuric acid will really help the situation!
    I just need some information about which hybrid(type) of the acid is actually used, it's concentration, how much dangerous the process is...
    Because, it is not possible to refill the battery with distilled water and expect it to work just as a new one(It will not be as efficient). It will just cause wastage of time and energy.
    Thanks in advance! :)

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 8 lety +1

      If the battery is too old (used) then it's not economic to either add water or acid (dangerous). When the battery works in a hot environment it will vent water from the gel paste and become inert, adding water will mostly restore it.

      In my case, I overloaded my 4-5 year old UPS, and it made a trickling sound for 2-4 seconds and tripped off.
      I just understood that something went wrong as the UPS didn't start at all after that... It was 4-5 months ago.
      After 4-5 months of that incident I opened my UPS to find my 12V battery reading 2.54V and had almost idea about the complex circuitry!
      I at first thought that my circuit burned due to that overloading, although I am not sure, but I now think that changing the battery may work! Any idea what might have happened?

    I'm converting the same model but with outlets to lithium, it will be a 3s 12p battery with salvaged lg power tool cells. The cord will be removed and it will eventually get a solar panel and hooked to a DC to DC converter to a 3s bms on the batteries to charge but for testing I'll charge it on my imax b6. I'll also add some USB ports and a fan if it works decently.

    • @TechTronic9000

      You do not want to add to much water as this is a gel / wet (not flooded) battery. It need just a tiny amount to re-establish electrolyte conductivity when it's dried out. Adding to much water will make it boil, crack, vent and spill acid.

  • @combinbain
    @combinbain Před 9 lety

    i can't understand why you dry out again the battery if the initial problem was the lack of water. If the battery is dried out, it should be dead again or am i missing something?

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 9 lety +5

      combinbain I'm not draining it, I'm verifying if all the added water was absorbed into the gel paste. If you put to much water the battery will boil and leak acid. So it's a safe measure to check that there is no remaining extra water.

      Acumulatorul a început într-adevăr să funcționeze, dar generează foarte multe gaze, astfel încît capacele de cauciuc „zboară” la fiecare minut. După ce am pus panoul de plastic înapoi, le ține în loc, dar gaze oricum se aud ieșind periodic.

    • @TechTronic9000

      It's a common fault for APC models after some age, usually it's traced to some dried up capacitors that need to be replaced. I have spend a lot of time trying to sort that out but it was too time consuming so ended up replacing it with another UPS. Another reason to drop using APC as most of my older units failed in the same way.

      If the UPS shows overload it may be from two causes. The main cause is not that the power supply exceed the UPS output, but the battery is not holding a charge properly. When you disconnect the UPS from the mains it switches to battery, and when the battery is old and weak the UPS may trigger the overload alarm instead of replace battery. Have you added water to cells, if yes leave the ups overnight to charge the battery. Also do a load test on the battery to see if it holds a charge.

    I have an apc battery backup but I cannot plug more than one device to it. Once I plug in a second device it just starts beeping and depletes. But when its just one device it is fine. What could be my problem? I measure voltage and its 12 volts and it holds that voltage for a long time. But the moment I plug 2 device the voltage drops and jumps. not sure whats going on but is the the same as yours? will water help it?

      It's possible that the second device to draw to much power. The APC C500 has a maximum output of 300W.

      TechTronic9000 i know for sure it is not drawing much power. I only plugged in like a 3w water pump and say a battery bank. I know that it is no where near the max wattage this ups battery can take. This one is an apc 550 so guessing it is similar. But not sure why it can't handle any second device. And all I can think about is can a the battery not be able to handle a certain amount of amps? like 3A and thats it? But maybe adding water will help?

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 8 lety

      It may be a a too old battery also inductive loads (electric motors/pumps) don't work well with computer UPS due to them needing pure sine-wave while the UPS has noting similar to it.

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 8 lety +1

      Also forgot to mention, try adding also a resistive load (a small 25W bulb). Some UPS's don't work properly with a minimum load.

  • @jjaylad
    @jjaylad Před 4 lety

    So...you added water, then charged it. Then you tipped it over and no water drained out. Where did the water go?

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 4 lety +1

      Because UPS batteries are made to be non-spillable, they use a "gel" like acid, or a combination of materials that absorb and hold the acid without letting it drip out. Some UPS models like some APC types get very hot insider under regular usage like being always on standby. The UPS battery gets also hot and it's also charged, this will result in venting and will dry out. If you add some distilled water this will get reabsorbed and will make the battery perform better.

      @@TechTronic9000 thanks for the explanation. I have a Nautilus Battery Pack:
      www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-nautilus-battery-pack-800-a-0111592p.html
      that must have had a bad battery from day one, because despite it's 800CCA label it wouldn't start my 4cyl car after fully charging it when I first bought it. I chalked it up to the weather being too cold but then last fall took it on a road trip to run laptop and other stuff and its discharged warning horn went after 10 minutes. It's beyond the 12 month warranty and a new battery here is $150.
      So, this morning I cracked open the Sealake 12v33ah battery from it and added probably 10oz of distilled water to it. I'm charging it now using the built in charger and after 15 minutes it reads 13.1v.
      Planning on charging it as much as it will take then disconnecting the car battery and hooking this one up to see if it will start it. Interesting.

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 9 lety

      John Douglas In general yes, but it also depends on the age and usage of the battery. The above UPS sit in a high temperature area and the battery vented all the electrolyte, leaving the internal paste dry. With water added the same battery is still working normal as i write this article. I'm sure that the battery capacity is decreased but it still keeps my small NAS and Router working for about 25 minutes.

      p.s. Battery voltage suddenly dropped - 10.79V

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 8 lety

      Are you using the UPS to charge it ? After you add water you should charge it with a constant 13.8V voltage for 12-24 hours. 12.78V on a charger is to low. After sitting disconnected for at least 6 hours it should have 12.8V if 100% charged.

    There is one "little" problem. By adding distilled water to the battery you won't help it. Because all the "sulfuric acid" is on the plates sulfated you end up with battery filled with water or more diluted electrolyte. Maybe if the battery off-gased a lot puting some H2O might help in the end but you have to get the plates clean of sulfation. Measuring voltage on terminals is one thing , put the battery under a proper load (discharge) and calculate the capacity , you'll see. It won't gain capacity ...This is not working. I have done it. ;) cheers

    • @TechTronic9000
      @TechTronic9000  Před 8 lety +1

      It really depends on the state of the battery, some batteries are impossible to recover, other may work again, of course a few years old battery revived with water will not work like new. For my above case the battery keep the ups working ~30 minutes with a small load (Router and NAS).
