  • In 2018 alone, Bangkok hosted over 22 million tourists from around the world, and extended its title as the world’s most visited city for the fourth year in a row. But while tourists may fawn over Bangkok’s many inexpensive pleasures, have you ever wondered how life is like for the foreigners who actually live in this tourism mecca? We hit the streets Bangkok to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of the individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Thai population.

Two comments as a Thai person:
    1. Last time I was living in Thailand in 2013, it was standard practice that foreigners were paid 5X the salary of a Thai person working at the same company. At the place I worked, me and the Thai workers made about ฿11,000 a month and the foreign workers made ฿55,000 a month.
    2. Regarding the Indian gentleman’s comment about how expats have helped in Thailand’s development - expats have actually been crucial to Thailand’s development since like at least the 13th century (for example the Chinese artisans who helped develop Sukhothai lacquerware).

50,000 THB is the minimum for monthly salary at a private company, in order to get visa and work permit. So that pay difference is entirely the government's fault. No foreigner wants to run foul of Immigration, so blame them.
Meanwhile, if you work for the government, they can pay you less than this 'foreigner minimum wage'. For school teachers, that still means you'll get paid more than Thai colleagues. But for university lecturers, foreigners end up being paid less than Thai colleagues (despite not having the bill for any of their degrees paid by taxpayer money).

It is very expensive, crowded, noisy and polluted. If you like big capital and are not looking to experience the local way of living then BKK is for you. The girl at 4 min brings a good point, Bangkok is not really representative of Thailand, well, where most foreigners live in BKK. I can say the same about Nimman or Old City in Chiang Mai. I currently am in Chum Phae, Thai Countryside, 2 hours away from the nearest Movie Theater. There are still foreigners here and enough foreign restaurants. Save me Ichigo!! Well it’s a long story but in 2017, I gave my life to Jesus, the best decision of my life. I was so excited and passionate about life and people. So I kept asking Him to reveal the plans He had for me but He kept saying wait wait wait. So for the first year of my life of being a Christian, I worked in this great Coffee Trailer as a barista. It was a tough job given the Texas heat in a metal box. But I listened to God, not with patience or grace but with stubbornness and complaints. Until finally one day, He opened up a door for me to follow my best friend across the world to Vietnam, when He said loud and clear to me Go Go Go! At the time, the thought of leaving my home was scary and impossible. But the idea grew on me, the desire to leave everything behind to follow Gods calling for my life seemed possible. So I decided to quit my job, sell my car and say goodbye to my family and friends. Fast forward, 6 months into Vietnam, I am homesick, lonely and unemployed. Crying out to God, why He called me to a foreign land, where I can’t speak the language, don’t know how to ride the motorbike and don’t have any friends. Yet the stillness of His voice that whispered to me since day 1, Trust Me, remained. So I trusted Him. Day in, day out of tears and fears. Now fast forward a few months, I got my first job as an English teacher, I met some cool Vietnamese friends. Life started to open up and I thought Vietnam isn’t so bad after all. So I made it my goal to explore my options and opportunities. Now 20 months in, I have my dream apartment living in district 2, a dream job creating my own lessons and teaching a class of 10-15 young professionals in companies throughout hcmc, a loving and grounding community of thriving and giving people and most of all my first boyfriend that is everything I prayed for when I ask God in my future husband. I guess you could say that, God knew the desires of my heart even before I did and by following Him, somehow, someway, He make things work out for my good. Even when I don’t know, He knew all along. I’m so thankful for this life and all the relationships I have made in Vietnam. I can say that Vietnam is my home now ♥️

The top uni in Thailand are all public (Chulalongkorn, Thammasart, Mahidol etc.) but it's a lot harder to get in and potentially more expensive. But since these 3 uni's are situated in Inner Bangkok, it's much more convenient. (Bangkok University is in outer Bangkok) :)

In case people don't know, a Westerner working in Thailand at a sizable company is paid according to how much they contribute to the company in terms of either foreign trade liasons or due to specialties+English language fluency. If a Westerner worked as a hotel maid they would be paid the same as Thai people.

I live in Thailand and I can totally agree with what they've all said. Especially with the Indiana guy. I'm Indian and so is my mom. She's a university teacher. One time when we said we were Indian, they asked us whether we owned a clothing shop. Now I have nothing against that but there are so many other people who have different professions and like it sometimes frustrated me that people think that Indians are like only clothing shop owners or roti makers or something. Rascism is also here but it's a lot more subtle. If you're from some specific countries like America, Australia or any Western countries, your salary is gonna be higher than that of a person from India or someplace close. I really think salaries should be based on your qualifications and experience, in that way it's really not fair. Again, this is just my opinion.

    • @birdastella9955

Racism is every where in the world. I'm a Thai woman with a degree from a uni in the EU and living here for almost 2 decades, and yet I'm seeing racism almost every day (mostly to the people form the eastern Europe and the middle east). I try to ignore it when it concerns me and I managed to get a good high paying job than the average western Europeans and facing jealousy. Worse scenario in the EU is a civil war in the near future that how bad it is.
First thing you have to understand is that you're a guest not a Thai citizen so you cannot expect to doing what you want in Thailand. Many people with higher qualifications than Thais want to come and live in the country for different reasons. And if they're all allowed to have any job, say a teaching job, then what we are going to do with the Thais with a degree in education? This kind of protectionism are also applied in every country. That's why they have "unemployment number reports" in every country.
When it comes to the salaries for ex. an English teacher in Thailand (since many Indians and Philipinoes complain about it). You have to understand that we want NATIVE English teachers so that our children learn speak English properly, otherwise teaching jobs (if not in professional areas or special subjects) are for Thai teachers only (I don't think I just can move and get a job in India either). Those who are not native English speakers should be thankful for the poorer schools giving them the jobs since they cannot afford native speakers. But the second most wanted, the third most wanted get lower paid, yet still higher than Thai teachers who also teach the same subject! That's how the market price works. That's life. We are here on earth to learn to understand "the Truth" in order to progress our Spirits...

Btw being a business owner considered to have a bit higher status than a teacher in Thailand. Most of Thai teachers are in debt-traps, thus makes a business owner a smarter and richer person for many Thais. You should take that as a compliment.

@@birdastella9955 "living in the EU" just showed that you never had respect for the country you studied or worked.
      And it shows you're integration!
If you know Europe, and are living in a European country, you should know that something like living in EU is not existing( only in some Politicians brain's).
Europe is a not a country!
Never someone will answer to the question "where are you from?" , I'm from EU.
The cultural differences are huge from one country to an other.
For example Swiss and Japanese mentality is closer than the Swiss and French one.

When you speak their language you speak to their hearts. Also living with Thai locals, understanding the divide between the super rich and poor, understanding the political powers (royal family, army, police).
Religion is a big part of the culture too. Buddhist monks live off the generosity of the people, they receive donations of food every morning, events for donations/sponsors to build new temples.
Some tips if you decide to travel to Thailand.
Make sure the taxi uses meter and not a predetermined price. They will most likely refuse if the area has too much traffic unless you pay much more. Otherwise try and use Grab (pretty much uber service).
Bring activated charcol tablets incase you get food poisoning (or buy it from any 7-11 or pharmacy)
Try and explore Thailand, not just the concentrated tourist spots Eg. Bangkok, Pattaya etc.
    And learn basic Thai phrases.
Have fun and stay safe with your future travels.
