- Few people in the 21st century have embodied the free-spirited and counter-cultural roots of rock climbing like Dean Potter. This six-foot-five, 180-pound, larger-than-life character was considered to be the most influential climber of his generation. In May 2015, while in his beloved Yosemite, Dean Potter had an incident while Base jumping would shake the extreme sports world to its core.

Dean was a Type A in every sense. He pushed the limits any chance he got, and it ultimately cost him in his life. But Dean lived more in his 43 years than the majority of people, and his legacy is unquestioned in the the sport of climbing. He knew the risks of his lifestyle. I'm in awe of athletes like him. RIP Mr.Potter, you an icon.
To what end is all this daring? Wasted lives.

It was all self absorbed gratification. He didn't dare in the pursuit of something that would truly help his fellow man. What are you "testing" other than some gross physical skills of no use to anyone but yourself and your willingness to waste other's time and risk their lives searching for your smashed up corpse splattered over half a mile of rocks? You live the thrill, someone else scrubs the blood off. Potter's life is an icon of the shallowness of modern life.

It’s like this is the end point for people that do this. If they succeeded they just look for more “challenges” until they’re ultimately “defeated”.

Jumping up to 4 foot while riding a horse was my adrenaline limit. I was much younger then 😊

A regular afternoon, life changes forever. It happened to me one skydiving Sunday. I broke my legs, my sacrum in 5 pieces, herniated two spine discs and had to have 25 big surgeries to be more or less ok. I now ride horses, which is much closer to the ground.
Any regrets about skydiving?

Be careful horse riding .my mum broke her back jumping 20 years ago. And my sister ended up with a fractured skull and a TBI after been kicked in the head after she fell .which cut her career as a NATIONAL STUD JOCKEY at Newmarket short. Lots of fun just make sure you wear all the safety gear

The rush of Adrenaline never ends well in extreme risky sports like this. It’s like a drug addiction. They push the envelope until they die.
It’s the endorphin release that keep people in this sport. Skydiving in the mountains was the most incredible memory I have to date. This man was at the top of his game.
It’s not about dying … it’s about LIVING, the fullest life.
Absolutely nobody does sport this to die.
You have a much greater risk of dying in an auto accident, check the stats if you don’t believe it.

That's true, particularly in airline accidents. But with commercial aircraft, there are HUNDREDS of tiny details that have to go wrong that finally spell disaster, wherein with extreme sports most of those redundancies are virtually non-existent.

I keep exceptional quotes written in a journal I keep there's less than 10 of them. This one by Mr. Whymper is one of them.
That one second before death is the moment you wish you hadn't done it. Everyone is the same at that moment. I've experienced that sensation a couple of times and was lucky. Dean would rather be alive than dying do what he loved... Rest in peace.

Yes and no. The interview confirmed his deep dislike for dead end jobs, living for the moment. To some degree many of us do the same before we ultimately die anyway. So what.

Yosemite has lifted up and then thrown down some of the greatest.
Why are they so great? It is stressful hiking in a park and those guys are climbing. I don't want to witness or think about 'Extreme Sports'. Memorials too. I don't want to see that crap.

Dean advocated for legalizing BASE and wing suit jumping in national parks, and then died doing so. Not only does that not support your cause, you've now made necessary the recovery and removal of your body from challenging terrain. This is a brand of hobby and level of thrill seeking I will admittedly never understand.

BASE jumping has a much higher rate of death, puts at risk those that need to recover your smashed up body and serves no utilitartian purpose.

that part about the raven got me, because that's impossible, a wild raven is just not going to fearlessly approach you calmly take a piece of cold cuts out of your hand, and then just stand there starring at you!! nope - not going to happen, it was dean. Also iv'e heard similar story's of loved ones coming to say hello in the form of cardinals, other birds etc... just as eerie as this raven! that is sad, at the same time some thing so right, there are no words.

These people acted like they weren't responsible for anything negative around them, they avoided even basic common courtesy. The nature they jumped from was trespassed on, damaged from their climbs, and they couldn't even follow basic nature guidelines:

This is real, my sister experienced something similar after her husband passed.
Dean Poter was an amazing athlete living on the edge. His climbing feats and slack lining are insane. The skill required to do that is immense.
But if you take those kinds of risks, eventually the time will come when one small miscalculation, or bad luck, and your dead.

Awesome video! Such a tragic accident but I guess it's more comforting to there loved ones knowing they passed doing exactly what they lived for! He seemed he lived his life exactly how he wanted!

I can't view his passing as a tragedy, although his friends and family have all my sympathies as losing a loved one is hard. But it seems like he literally spent his entire life taunting the grim reaper the entire time. And got away with it for years!

I agree with some, not really a tragedy. Its a natural and expected outcome. But I don't consider it dumb. People can live their lives how they wish. Potter was probably born without the ability to feel fear...the way most people do.

I thought the story was going to be that Potter died at the notch while Hunt lived. The story reminds me of a co worker who was a wingsuit jumper. He would jump all over the world and was paid to jump from underneath a new bridge in China. Later, i talked to him about the dangers and he said that he prepared for and was a large part of his life. People like Dean and Hunt are just wired different, they weren't meant to die as broken, old men.
I am a skydiver and I have known many to suddenly realize skydiving is dangerous enough and the other extreme activities are not best for longevity.
Broken old men.....you obviously lack climbing experience. There are many aged climbers still enjoying the beauty of rock some as old as 79+. Perhaps its time you got out of your rocking chair and went for a walk...🤭🤭🤭
I have had a co worker who was a wingsuit jumper too, he's not famous though and works as a nurse now as far as I know. You often hear of wingsuit jumpers who die so it feels like everyone will die eventually, I suppose you need to know when it's time to quit (though accidents can still happen).
@@teijaflink2226 Skydiving you never know when your number is up. Wingsuits are more complicated and more risk, but often skydivers die from the most dumb details and usually with a good parachute above their heads.

Great video! I was waiting for a video that involved Yosemite National Park, that being said this guy took a huge risk by Base jumping off of this area of the Park. It's a shame Potter and his buddy Hunt died doing what they loved. I think they should have paid more attention to the wind that picked up when they jumped. Maybe that's what led up to their tragic end? I'm not sure but I hope that their families will find peace and comfort and may Potter and Hunt rest in peace 🕊️🙏
I feel bad for the dog, but the dude was a dead man walking and irrelevant. He abused the trust of the dog. He gets the Darwin award and never will never reproduce, so the gene pool wins there.

I’ve always had a fascination with proximity wingsuit flying and especially Jeb Corliss. I skydived one time and it was not the experience that I thought it would be. We were delayed 4 hours because of cloud cover, and ultimately jumped through the cloud cover anyway, which was super cool. The problem I had with it was when we jumped the equipment we were given was not the best to be able to enjoy the experience. No goggles, or full face type helmets. So the problem was during free fall, so much wind was being jammed down my throat I couldn’t breathe. To the point where I began to think if this dude doesn’t pull the chute quick I’m going out, and luckily he did

Fascinating figure Dean Potter was. Addicted to the extremes. A famous and very experienced basejumper from the Netherlands died while scaling down in his wingsuit in Switzerland this year. Jarno Cordia. He and his partner have incredible and beautiful footage of their jumps on socials (jennagygi, mccordia). Maybe a topic for a future video on this great channel?
The "wing suit" is a marvelous invention and it looks like hella fun for the base jumping enthusiast, but damn it if zooming just inches away from cliffs and trees ain't the most thrilling and dangerous sport in history!

I know the story well, still clicked and watched. Was fine just chalking it up to the cost of extreme sports and remembering my time in the sierra , then with that one still pic of him with his girl and his dog in his backpack - that just sent tears gushing. That really hit home for me. Bless all my lost brothers and sisters. Miss you all so much.
I’m literally sitting here contemplating what to type. I’m at a loss for words. Sending prayers and love to all the people whom loved both of these men. My stomach turned as I watched this video. I get vertigo on the steps at my sons Highschool and that’s just 2 story’s. I am so truly sorry that the sport they loved so much ended up taking there lives. One of my ex boyfriends used to do this. He tried to convince me to join, but I politely declined…it just wasn’t for me. I’ve always wanted to see Yosemite, but I never got around to it.

As a more modest extreme sports enthusiast, I contend that the absolute realness of the moment is worth so much more than the everyday toil. One minute of flight will be in your memory forever. And to live that close to the edge is to live as if in heaven itself...

I do both but in moderation. The real boundary pushers are just like really serious druggies, up to and including living homeless in the park and failing to get help when you get hurt.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence that every clip in the beginning of this video, and almost all that I've seen online, depict base jumpers trying to get as close to deadly objects as they possibly can. As if it isn't dangerous enough.
22:40 It's funny how we can twist reason to allow ourselves to feel a connection after a loss. She turned bribing a raven with a piece of salami into a spiritual experience! I had a similar experience after the loss of a dog I had for 18.5 years. I later laughed, realizing that my irrational thought process was facilitated by my emotional vulnerability. This was completely out of character for me!

I believe you should bet allowed to do any you want if you don't damage the rocks, etc.. And the park service has to be compensated if you want the body recovered. Don't ban it!
Adrenaline, a very addictive substance. Getting hooked will make one do these kind of things. One can call them foolish, one can call them brave, It’s just a life lost, one of many each day. Then again, to each his own. However I don’t think parents decide to have children that will undertake these kind of things. Living up to responsibilities seems to be a difficult characteristic.
Many more climbers , base jumpers and squirrel suit enthusiasts need to follow their example. So valuable for human experience and defines our purpose.

I do believe the raven was Dean saying “hi I love you”. Do not underestimate the signs the skies send you. Universe talk to us in many ways. I highly recommend to read about animal totems and so on. The native Americans knew these things. We should

I feel bad for the rescuers who had to recover the bodies of people who think they’re above the law. The horror of what they will live with so someone can get a drug like rush. The only people I see worthy of admiration and respect are the ones forced to clean up others irresponsible entitled behavior.
You are talking absolute rubbish it is a disturbing thing to need to recover bodies from any disaster weather it's your own fault or whether it is just an accident or a natural disaster these two men were living their lives pushing their lives to the edge not sitting around doing nothing like watching soap operas on TV or doing the same thing day in and day out and being just a boring same old Joe just like you and millions of others who think that everybody should live by the rules that people make up like the government and the establishment with your lives being controlled. Me myself I've got friends who volunteer to be mountain Rescuers who also do extreme sports like bass jumping and Slack rope walking. And let's not forget who rescued the 13 children who were trapped in a cave in Thailand it was not the the Thai Navy Seals it was not the American navy seals it was not the army but it was a group of guys who specialise in cave diving the best in the world who do cave diving at weekends as a hobby sport who have regular jobs in the week these are the people who put their lives at risk to rescued these children from the cave that they were trapped in for nearly two weeks actually a little bit longer. The American navy and the Thai Navy would not go into the cave any further it was up to these guys who took the time off work and traveled across the world to save these children so do yourself a favour love and have some respect for people just because a sport is dangerous it doesn't mean that it's done in a Dangerous manner accidents happen people die every day in accidents and bodies need to be recovered and if people don't want to do rescue work and recover bodies then don't do it leave it up to the people who can do it and in the case of the cave in Thailand it was ordinary people who saved these children not professionals so go back to your armchair and do your boring thing that you do every day, day in and day out you are the boring one you are the one who is unadventurous you are the one who will probably never need to be rescued Because You Live a boring life I hope that you do never need to be rescued that might be from a car accident or getting into trouble in the sea when you're on holiday if you dare go into the sea when you're on holiday have some respect. And I suggest that you go on disney+ and look up the documentary it's called the rescue and then you might understand who are the real heroes here there's nothing wrong with people who go out and recover bodies that's what they do that's what they signed up to do and they are trained and prepared mentally to be able to do that the guys who rescued the kids from the cave we're not trained to do so but they did it because the Professionals couldn't do it the people who make up the laws couldn't do it actually the people who make up the laws we're not even going to let the rescue go ahead because it was too dangerous so stick your neck back in love and have some respect for people who want to live on the Edge and live their lives to the full. I hope that you live to a right old age but I'm pretty sure you're going to have a very boring life.

This makes dying as a result of an extreme sport so romantic, but in reality, it is a careless way to die and in time no one will remember. I have known several die as a result of BASE jumping, skydiving, motorcycle racing, diving, and they are remembered exactly how others are.........DEAD. I have faced many times in my life the death, even though I have tried my best to avoid risky maneuvers, ... So, you can't avoid risky things in life, there is a challenge and then you can't stop yourself... My grandfather was a famous mountain climber. so died with 60 in the mountain... 6500 people were coming to his funeral. In any case, you feel born again, when you survive... I appreciate my life much more than anybody else because I know how fast I can die, I was already 3 times clinically dead, and one time my entire body was paralyzed ...

A client, Bob, told me about watching these two guys die climbing in Yosemite. Free climbing when one should not. He heard screams then decided to investigate AFTER their own climb. Both knew the guys they’d warned about how they we climbing were now dead. His girlfriend didn’t climb that day and actually saw the two fall. Very dead.
Oh no they were just simply pushing the envelope of the human experience!
They pushed it right off the cliff into the granite valley below.
These people are psychopaths. They lack impulse control, assign importance only to their own emotions, and fail to see how their own reckless nature hurts others.
Whenever someone complains on behalf of the other people responding to their problems, the enablers act as of this response isn't "their fault".

It was an amazing film, but as i recall was a rough cut and was incomplete... I can't even remember who the filmmaker was... it covered everything up until he was starting the FreeBASE... you actually used some of the footage formt he film in this video... and I've seen lots of clips from it around.... but never the complete movie.

Dean, Jose (his death featured HEAVILY in "Aerialist") Ivo, Ammon (he had a NASTY base jumping accident himself... but survived), Timmy, Cedar.... seriously... the monkeys could make for the subject of a great vid, though not necessarily a disaster vid... though they certainly had their share.

I had to LOL at the beginning of this video when the guy is saying they are professionals and use the most caution, while video of people doing the exact opposite of being cautious roles.
After reading many of the comments I realized many do not understand people like Dean. He like many run hot. They are not meant for a slow death by cancer or dementia. They run hot. For them living the slow and safe life would be a slow death. This is how I have learned to deal with the loss of some of my closest friends. They too always pushed it. While the rest of us slowed it down they kept hammering. They are wired differently.

The most adventurous things I've ever done are a couple bungy jumps off a crane at an amusement park and parasailing a few times. Parasailing is pretty safe, even if you become detached from the boat you just come down like a regular parachute jump and you have a life jacket on so I wouldn't really rank it as an extreme activity. Maybe if there are sharks where you were coming down, yeah, that would be extreme.
Most of these kinds of people never quit or retire from their sport, they just go until they die. Always looking to push. Can't enjoy success at at even a top level, always wanting more

I'm not sure if this one makes me very sad or very mad! IMO this is beyond crazy, this is coming from someone that puts her seatbelt on to drive down a 1000' driveway. My 1st question is how many ppl that do this live to an old age? Why would u want to climb a 1000'+ without a support? Why would anyone try and tempt fate over & over? When a simple vertigo moment or a muscle cramp will end your life. Not a religious person, so the word fate is used losely. Beautiful ppl gone ❤💔so much life left to live. 😭😭
