Baling Hay with a John Deere 450 E Round Baler and New Holland Powerstar 75

- I just got a John Deere 450 E round baler and had a learning curve trying to figure it all out. I got the hang of it and wanted to share how I do it in hopes of helping out someone else. Let me know if you have any tips I should try!

Stumbled on to your videos. Love them. I too am a retired shop teacher in Texas. Retiring to my farm and going to be producing my own hay for first time in over 30 years. Love the way you go over all the details. Very good stuff.
Just came across your channel....Nice equipment there $$$...just a real money saving tip tho....start your pto at idle speed then rev up to 540 rpm, with any implement behind you....If you continue doing it your way it's going to get really expensive, and really frustrating, real fast fixing shear bolts and busted driveline knuckles......Happy Farming
Also you want to turn the PTO on at idle. Hard on it to turn on at PTO speed
Your right with the bale sensor being half way, our 450E starts indication at around 33.5 diameter. I wouldn't know about twine, but on net we have ours set at 2.5 wraps, works good for us. We have the same beeps and we have a small kicker on ours, the NH 654 we had before has a ramp kicker working with springs. All good information your sharing, it's always good to get others opinion, helps you to see other ideas, whether it's the same as yours or not. Thanks for sharing, I like what your doing, keep it up.
Have you had any problems with breaking the shear bolt on the pto shaft on the baler? I have a 450e and every once in a while it will break the shear bolt.
Yes, about 3 or 4. Most were our fault.
I would like to find a slip clutch and get rid of the shear bolt setup.

Hey buddy I'm also from WV and do some farming I don't have a high tech baler like yours but I beleive the reason u have 4 wraps on the ends of ur bale is the button u push for ur distance between twine is actually ur end wraps of twine . Just came across your channel thanks for the video

with mine i do a 56" bale only because some times you might bring a lil more in than that and i know it won't hurt the baler. last year i put 600 bales out of mine and your right can't believe how good it dose. if you hit the 123 button 2 times it will show you how many bails the baler has total you cant erase that number. the bale kicker is a nice option also. i figure it up it saves about 1 min per bail.

There is no way it saves a minute per bale. Back up while it’s tying or wrapping and be ready to dump when it cuts. Close the gate and be on your way. It MIGHT save 10 seconds if that. Only thing it really saves is from having to back up
@@nalley6815 yes with a newer tractor your right but some times i pull mine alot with a older tractor that you had to wait to go from rev to forw. now when i put it on my 6115jd you are right.
@@parryfarmsllc.2882 I still don’t see what you’re saying. I’ve pulled mine with a 12 year old tractor and I’ve pulled it with a 46 year old tractor. My dump method is the same on both. As soon as the monitor tells me to stop I back up and put it in forward and wait for it to cut the net. As soon as it cuts I dump the bale and pull up then shut the gate. By the time the gate shuts im already at the start of the row just the same as I would be if I had a bale kicker or ramp. I can’t figure up how you would save any time
Looks like you are enjoying your new setup! I would suggest a better hay raking method. Instead of following how you cut the hay follow the longest straight side of you fields and go in straight lines back and forth to the other side. Once done make windrows across the ends to clean everything up. I would have doubled those WR you have there too. When you start baling do the end rows first to get that hay out of your way and then do the long rows. Try it I bet you like it!

@@farmerscott8041 You will find raking and baling straight lines much easier and also leave less hay on the ground with the baler due to way less turning.
I would have to fire that rake man if I had to follow them WR all day long. Lol

From having a 458 netwrap I’ll tell you a few things. Do not under any circumstance make an oversized bale. It happens accidentally sometimes but what can happen is it’ll break the tension arm assembly and it can cost $10,000 to fix. Yeah.... Had multiple Deere techs tell me that. Keep your belt lace pins changed or else you’ll be in for a heck of a job. Change those pins every 600-1000 bales. Keep that pto shaft greased. Very very very expensive to replace it. I hope it’s still a good baler for you. I enjoyed mine when it worked
We traded a 6 row strip-til planter combo for a 459 silage special..... the pins had never been changed.... Took us 6 hours to remove and replace the pins.... Had to cut the old pins in between the hinge points with 2 dremel tools and about 50 small quarter sized cutoff wheels.... So what you say is no fool-fact.....

Bail looks lose. Is that as tight as it will bale? Far more waste with lose bales. I have a 535 John Deere baler that bales 5'x6' bales so tight you can hardly stick the hay spike in it. It takes 80 PTO HP to drive it. I would like to downsize to the Power Star 75 and smaller bales but don't want to give up tight bales.

I don't know an exact itemized price. My local dealer put on the items I needed and gave me a bundled total cost. I'd call your local John Deere dealer and ask about pricing on the "Bale shape kit, item BE32968." Sorry I don't have a real specific answer for that.

I order my bale shape sensors today from the dealer and they were $683 for the kit. I was mad that my dealer didn’t tell me that the baker didn’t come with them. We used it two seasons without them.

We just bought a John Deere 450 E and it's a piece of crap. We've used it 4 times since July and something has broke on it with every use. We had a 27 yr old Gehl and it never gave us an ounce of trouble. Big mistake purchasing the JD. Wouldn't buy another one.

Balers are a hit or miss piece of equipment. Everyone says Deere balers are great. I had one. It was ok I guess. Could’ve been better. But new holland is the same way. Heard good and bad. Just as Vermeer too.
My Son put his city slicker wife in the seat of a 7230 and she baled over 250 bales without a hitch.......Got a Video to prove it.....
@@farmingforfunandprofit940 those monitors make it so incredibly easy to make a bale as long as everything is calibrated right. It’s almost dummy proof!
See I think that’s just a load of bs. Spend that much money on a baler and it not even come with shape sensors. I mean jeez even an old 530 had shape sensors lol
