Im asian. I was raised with tough love from both parents.. If I did something wrong I got spanked by a belt or a piece of stick. They showed me that the outside world isn't just rainbows and flowers sometimes there's calamities in life we must fight to overcome and presevire.
My mom was more strick to me then my dad.. Im proud the discipline they taught me. They made me a better person and father..
Asain people are some of the best citizens I think because I never see an Asain person on the news doing stupid stuff
A good parent knows the difference between discipline and abuse. When raising kids if they don't get their butts whacked occasionally something is not right. I certainly did and I'm grateful for parents that didn't let me act up. Love them and miss them everyday.
I got the belt a few times, I’ve never really spanked my boy. He never did anything wrong enough for me to have to. I did yell at him pretty bad yesterday for losing his coat at school. Three hundred dollar coat!
I never got a belt... but a wooden spoon hairbrush was fair game. My son got a couple spankings...then all I had to do (if we were away from home) is suggest we go to the bathroom. He said, "nope, I'm good" and he straightened right up 😂🤣. Course, having a talk worked for him...my daughter...not so much 😂 but we're all close

I don't miss parent because they didn't even discipline me and I don't even know " bob spittle's," parent. I don't know " bob spittle " . LOL 😂 😂 But " My owned Parent does love me and my family love also they discipline me as a child and protected me from doing bad stuff like teaching me about drugs and alcohol and cigarettes are very bad for me in the 1970 to 2000 in which I never had used .

I remember the belt. My brother and I knew when it was belt time. My dad would stand up from his recliner, undo his belt, and we ran. I'm not advocating that parents beat their kids, and can't say whether there is any merit to it, but I can say; I have never burned down a building because someone on the internet hurt my feelings.
My dad had a 8 foot machine belt.... It could reach out and catch you running across the room..... 🤪 I'm in my 70's now and totally understand his reasoning.... We... All my siblings are better people for it. And No.... I don't hate my dad for his discipline. I love him and miss him everyday.

Thank you for sharing. There has been a generation (my oldest son's generation, he's 27 yo) where the government and political correctness came in and interfered with parenting and discipline. I know for me, I had a natural instinct to discipline my child the way it was supposed to be but as a very young single mom, they put a level of fear in me that said if you spank, hit or whatever your child, you will get in trouble and be charged with child abuse, today he is no different then the rest of these entitled yahoo's and it breaks my heart that I didn't just listen to my instincts instead of giving into fear. I have not made that same mistake twice I tell ya what, my 13 year old respects mine and my husband's authority and we have a great relationship because I went with my instinct to discipline him.

My God I was just thinking about this very same thing, weak parenting, weak punishments, the worse punishment a parent dishes out today is no playing videogames for a day, and we wonder why it seems our youth is out of control
Born in the mid 60's, I remember in the 90's kids were having their parents arrested for doing that, the courts were also allowing kids to divorce their parents.
The lawmakers and government allowed it to manifest into what we have today, one of the weakest dumbed down generations ever

I was an army brat growing up in the 60's! If we were old enough to sass back, we got smacked! The next time you got the eye glare and you knew to keep your mouth shut!! Loved the 70's!!
That eye- I remember "the look" you'd get if you so much uttered a word when you should be minding your own business . The '60's was my era.
Got belted. Got smacked. But the guilt. I did something really dumb once and made my mother cry -- and my mother never cried. 60+ years ago -- and I remember every detail of that moment as if it were yesterday.
One time as a kid I got caught stealing loose playing cards from the grocery store. My mom called my dad (on the pay phone) and told him what I did.
When I got home, my dad made me give him every card I had. After he yelled at me, he had me sit in my room while I cried. A little while later, he opened the door and tossed in one of those newspaper sleeve bags, stuffed with all of my cards chopped up into little pieces. On the bag he wrote the word “THIEF”.
The guilt I felt for disappointing my dad was more powerful than any belt ever was. Never stole another thing in my life.
As an Italian, my dad used used a belt, and my mom, as an Okie, used a small branch from our peach tree out back. Ouch, but I made sure she didn't have to use it very often!
All my Dad had to do was look at me. That was enough.

My dad always threatened the belt with spikes. He didn't have one though. One time when I was a kid, only my brother and I were home so we grabbed a ladder and checked out his belt drawer which was higher up than our reach at the time. We didn't see any belt with spikes but BOY did we recognize the rest of them. Discipline builds respect if used for positive results. Lack of discipline leads to lawlessness and mayhem. Our country is currently in a state of lawlessness and mayhem. Wish we had a spiked belt right about now.
EDIT: I should add. I talk to my dad every day. It will be the worst day of my life when he's gone.

We have spiked belts now, problem is the democrats are confused, they think discipline is child abuse. I thank dad everyday for using his belts and every other means, lord knows I earned it, and I respect dad for it. May he rest in peace
As an Irish kid, my mom used either a yardstick or a hanger- depending on what stage she was in mending/cleaning the clothes. 😂
Jennifer..I used to get the wooden spoon or the Easter paddle ball ..
My Mom used a willow switch or metal spatula... To this day I avoid Willow trees and only use plastic spatulas when cooking.

You didn't have to be Italian to get beat with weapons. My father used a razor strap. My mother, she grabbed whatever was closest to her. And pray to God she wasn't running the vacuum cleaner, the cord worked like a whip and she knew how to use it.

My dad was so scary about using belts and what not, all he has to do was be home and we were all scared.
As a teacher, my last couple of classes have been the softest, whiniest, and most entitled groups. You can't even play a game sometimes because kids won't play unless it's the game they wanted. Admins will not let us keep the kids from recess for bad behaviors or missing work. If I give extra homework I hear it from parents. Imagine 11 year olds crying because I gave 2 tests in 1 day. How will they make it in the workforce? Everyone is so centered on feelings, and now they have no coping skills. They have no clue how to self soothe, because every minor problem requires a social worker and a psychologist. God help us.
I would never be a teacher during these horrible criminal times. God bless you
I'll be 40 in May. My mom is a part Norwegian, 5'8", Amazon. I still Flinch if I'm visiting and she reaches for a wooden spoon too quick. I'm the oldest of three sons, and she was doing it solo. She raised three productive, decent, mostly law abiding citizens (we were all teenagers once). Sometimes you just need to take it upside their head, when they act a d**med fool.
Goodness, my mother in law is half Norwegian and she's tall, so my husband is TALL. I've seen his uncle's and they looked to be 7feet tall. My mother in law is 84 now, and I know you shrink with age, plus she's stooped over from a bad back.

My uncles are both over 6'2", and my grandma is a little short, but her father (first of his family born here, from Norway) was so big, my grandfather (who's got enormous hands from being an aircraft mechanic) couldn't fit his hands around his father-in-law's wrist. sadly, I never got to meet the man, but everyone describes him as a giant of a man, with a gentle but stubborn disposition.

My Dad's spankings were a common part of early childhood. They were so effective, that eventually all he had to do was ask if I wanted a spankin', that's when I knew I was messing up and needed to fix myself now. Grew up better for it
