This brought back many happy memories. A 1946 RMA was my very first car which I bought in 1968 from the grandson of its original owner.

Hi Roger, I’m really pleased it’s brought back happy memories. They really are a charismatic car and so nice to drive. Yours was a very early one then, I think production started in 1945. Do you know if yours still exists.

@@EverydayWorkshop Yes. it very much exists. I don't know where you are located, but DAP 386 seems to based in Cheshire judging by images I've seen on line..
I reckoned this car is the 2nd oldest in the RM Club, but I may be wrong. I had an accident when a Morris 1000 Traveller pulled out in front of me, 2 classics in one go
I sold it on as spares or repair, it was rebuilt and sprayed white and went through an auction down south. It has been resprayed two-tone and one or two small details are wrong, but at least its on the road where it belongs.
My Rileys were a way of life. but I was well and truly tucked up by NatWest and had to sell up.

Hi Roger, it sounds like a very special RMA if it is the 2nd oldest on the RM register. I’m in East Yorkshire so it’s not near me. I did buy mine from a chap at Fleetwood though. I hope you have the chance to have another Riley.

The speedometer trouble is due to the odometer numeral barrels being near seized. They are indexed forward by a ratchet- type device. As the ratchet tries to move the barrels this stiffness causes the speedo cable to "wind up". Then, when the ratchet releases and returns for the next indexing the cable "unwinds". This gives the slow/fast surges and, in addition to being a pain in the butt, will in due course break the cable. Remove the speedometer from the dash, apply a small amount of thin oil such as 3 in 1 to the barrels and rotate them until running freely. You can reset the total mileage to its correct reading quite easily.

Hi Mike, thanks for the information, you are very likely correct. I have a new cable, but haven’t had chance to get around to the task yet. When I do I will check and oil the odometer barrels as you suggest. With lubrication and a new cable hopefully it will be perfect.

Gorgeous old car! Here in Australia, my late uncle was a member of the Riley Car Club and his son, my cousin, has an unrestored RM* in storage on his farm.

Thanks Michael, I love it. Have you watched the recent video about the restoration. It would be great to have another RM on the road, you should give him some gentle encouragement. Do you know any details about the car ie Model year etc.

It really was, all sorted now though. Replaced the speedo cable. I uploaded a video showing the cable replacement, if you are interested. Link: czcams.com/video/3kTtC43J2n0/video.html

Nicely driven Sir ! Just a few more jobs to do then. I'm using the lockdown in New Zealand to get my RME roadworthy again. I think the RMA's and 'B's are the best of the series. Hope you have been able to enjoy driving it a bit more this year.

Thank you Nigel, yeah I need to get them done and enjoy driving it more. Seem to have to many other projects getting in the way at the moment. I agree they are great cars, very charismatic. You will have to post a short video showing your car, I would love to see it and I hope you soon have it on the road.

Fantastic video around Yorkshire, and perfect roads. Although any speed cameras might have clocked you at 50mph, in a 30, when you're probably going 30mph.

Haha yeah drives me bonkers too. Must get around to replacing it, haven't had much chance to pay her much attention lately. I will have to get on with it. Thanks for the comment. I'll try and video when I do with the resulting smooth operation.
