  • Your favorite cars are a matter of opinion. Whether you like the top of the line sports car to the cheap Facebook marketplace Honda Civic - everybody has their own taste. For today's video I go down my brief list of cars off the top of my head that were disappointing - mostly in the last 20 years or so. We've seen the automotive industry change with its culture and technology - but what will truly make the cut? Let's talk about it.

Apparently naming a car is VERY expensive. You have to do things like make sure the name isn’t offensive in any locations, make sure the trademarks/other IP is available in all markets, do focus groups on consumer sentiment, etc. It is much cheaper to just reuse a name that they already had, but weren’t using. So it makes sense for Mitsubishi since financially they are not doing great.

I still haven't seen a new Z in person and my opinion might change drastically, it happened with the Supra, it could happen again. Honestly though the images and videos I've seen of the new Z, I HATE it visually. I think it is one of the ugliest cars Nissan has ever made. I understand the design philosophy, I get that it's supposed to be an amalgamation of all the cool Z/ZX cars in one and I see that in the design, but I still think it is absolutely butt ugly hideous. I especially hate the black roof they show all the pre-release cars having. I know it comes in full body colors but it's hard to even find images of those, let alone one in the wild. The worst thing by miles, and probably the easiest to fix, for me is the front bumper. That rectangle grille is just so bad. It genuinely looks like they forgot to style it before releasing images and just went with it.
I firmly believe that the 300ZX and the 370Z are two of the best looking cars Nissan has ever made and this new one looks like somebody tried to draw them from memory, forgot which parts belonged to which and forgot all the body curves and lines either had. THAT SAID I've seen renderings of it with a widebody kit to give it the rear fenders the 370Z had and it looks much, MUCH better to me.
Again, I reserve the right to change my mind once I finally see one in person.

Amen.. we used to go through eg and ek platform cars.. when you’re broke, a 4 door ls manual with options that was clean, with little Rota slips, a short shift kit, maybe a little intake.. 3 grand.. maybe less (In 2006-8) and you were having a blast. Actually.. at the time you could probably assume some kind of music upgrade was going on and still under budget… I remember building several integrals.. 2 and 4 door.. LS and gSR cars, all the ls cars were less than 4500 (usually a lot less) to build and the GSR cars we could do for between 4 and 7 grand… that’s why they’re all gone.. they were the best cheap and practical fun ever built. What was better for the money? Many things maybe close to as good… but for a bulletproof maintenance only car.. the DC series of cars can’t be touched.. you could buy a 5.0 for the same money then, but for that money it was comparing a shit box to a really good cheap car.. great 5.0s exist! But the good ones were never cheap.

And no matter what anyone says about the design, there can be no denying that the build quality on the Grecale has to have taken a step up from the previous generation of Maseratis that came before it. What it lacks in design (in your opinion) it makes up for in quality of build. It actually uses a Maserati built engine, and it is built to be a luxurious touring car. Same with the Maserati GT. They’re also fun to drive as well, albeit not as fun as something like a Porsche or a Lotus. So in my book, I’d say that constitutes a fair improvement over last generation’s Maseratis. They’re not just shitty BMW/Audi/Mercedes competitors anymore. They’re solid Porsche/Lotus alternatives. Easily the Mercedes-Benz of the premium-sports car brands (Porsche, Maserati, Lotus)

Yes, it has a bigger motor with only 3 more horsepower, but people are too hung over the brochure. The factory tune is so much more livable, the engine is overbuilt (only running 12 PSI of boost compared to 16 PSI from the last gen), it's relatively easy to squeeze power from the FA24, and the car overall just drives better. The only two points I will concede are the exterior design (which is subjective and also consider that all generations following the GC have been hated for their designs before being accepted later anyways), and the gatekeeping of features by the GT trim (which hopefully Subaru does address).

I thought that I would love it , since I have a soft spot for the old one and the Samurai. But nothing in the brand new 2020 model that I tested was good except the body and paint. I couldn't find a comfortable position to sit in it , it felt like I was driving a fridge on wheels , the lane keep assist woudn't turn off all the way and was making me nervous and to top it all I really thought that I would love the manual trans , but I hated it. The one I tested had only 1500 miles on it , but it felt broken from the factory . I just couldn't get a smooth gearshift out of it.
It was also painfully slow . Mind you my actual car at the time had only 75 hp and it felt like a rocketship comparred to that Jimny. Still breaks my heart to this day , because I wanted to love it , but it wasn't my cup of coffee.

In the early to mid 2000's, the Integras/RSX's, Eclipses, 240's, Z's, WRX's etc were still cool. But after that all the cars either got old or some brands dropped off the performance radar entirely. The Japanese brands failed to stay interesting to people in that demographic. I kinda moved onto the Germans since then and have had M's, AMG's, Audi S' and Porsches for the last decade. I'm glad that the Type-R, Integra, new Z and Supra finally came back(in some form) but it's not something I want as a 30-something year old and your average person doesn't have room for more than 2 or 3 cars. Speaking of the Supra, I have had other B58 powered BMW's though. I can imagine the Supra, especially with the available manual now is a great driver.

granted, i'm not a fan of newer cars but I think the VB is just hideous. mechanically it's supposedly better than the VA in every aspect which is good since my only gripe about the VA mostly stems from the ECU, but like the VA the facelift was a great improvement over the 15-17, maybe the VB facelift will look better but I won't hold my breath

I wasn’t very impressed with them but I had driven a turbocharged Brz and I was like this is what they needed. Then I drive the newest model 86 and Brz and I have to say. Even tho I got a Mazda 3 turbo all wheel drive as my daily. I had more fun in the 2021 Gt86 than the Mazda because how easily it wants to go sideways and the handling.

  • @tear728

Gotta disagree with the WRX. The fa24 motor is a massive improvement. It's underrated from the factory. They dyno stock around 265whp, which is close to the 271bhp rating.
Internals are also way beefier. Cylinder walls and rods are twice as thick as the fa20. With an intake and a 93 octane tune, people are getting 350whp. Add an intercooler and E30 tune, easily above 400whp. People are running quarter mile times in the low 11s with just those mods. This costs about $2.5k, so you can have a car that runs low 11s for under $35k if you buy a base model.
To get these numbers with any of the previous boxer engines, it would cost $5k and be unreliable. The only solution to get those numbers reliably was a built engine which would be greater than $10k.

The traction control on the Z is an easy fix, same as the 370 or the G, you cut a wire and put a switch on it and you're good to go. Totally agree though that it should come standard. Its also a boat, I test drove it and it felt more sloppy than a stock 370. I was really hoping to replace my G37 with the new Z, but looks like I'm waiting, especially since Motorvate DIY is so close to working out GTR gauges for the G.
