Martina Hingis was such an incredibly smart player I wish she had won more singles grand slam titles throughout her career I remember wanting success for her so badly throughout the 2000s
No so smart. Had she played smart against the big hitting Williams sisters, she would have won many more slams. She is the finest player (male or female) I have ever seen, a fact corroborated by her record in doubles where skill (technique) is more important than fitness and power. Against the Williams sisters she tried to beat them at their game, bit like MacEnroe against Lendl. Had she played short and down the middle, that would have negated the power of the Williams. OK, it doesn't stop the many aces both hit down but she ran them very close in every game I watched; I just think she was so much better than them other than the power. Yes, for me the finest of them all.
Oh Gosh, I'm just lost for words for what Hingis did at all four Slams while sixteen...🙆 That feat of her is never ever going to be broken or repeated again....👍🏻
She inherited the throne when Graf became injured...I'm not sure what would have happened if Graf had played , Wimbledon no chance I know that one for sure ..Graf hammered her twice without playing well in 95 n 96 at Wimbledon.

Martina Hingis is one of the smartest tennis players I've ever seen. No big service, no physical advantage, no speed..just plain anticipation and mental smarts. I was so impressed with her success that it still amazes me that she could've achieved so much with so little glaring intangibles.
im no expert in tennis, just very casual. When watching her all those years ago i always remarked on how well she 'placed' the ball. Youre right, she couldnt smash the ball 1000mph, just would put the ball in opponent's court where they werent. Make them run around all day long!

It will always be immortal if you talk about the great Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Monica Seles. All these fantastic females bring so much joy even regarding their ups and downs during their career. I hope that Monica Seles is not traumatized anymore after this gruesome stabbing in Germany ( 1993 as far as I know). I hope that Steffi Graf can share her love with Andre Agassi. I hope that Mrs. Navratilova still lives her life the way she likes it. All of them are living legends! All the best ( love, respect, balance and health) for them!
One of the greatest of all time, for sure! She probably had the highest "tennis IQ" in history --- even better than that of Federer. She was the supreme tactician and strategist of the game. Is there something in the water in Switzerland or what?! ❤

I enjoyed this. I suspect Evert won’t interview Steffi Graf (Graf is almost ‘reclusive’ in terms of avoiding the spotlight generally and has no dealings with the WTA now, I don’t think), but it would be a great watch if she could persuade Graf to do it. I think Hingis was fair in her own assessment of 1997 - and all credit to her for acknowledging the absence of Graf.

She made statements such as "had u not gotten stabbed you would have been the GOAT", By 1993 you were 3-1 against Steffi". But failing to mention during the Seles dominant years it was 4-3 to Seles and most of her wins came on clay. Seles best surface. And also failed to take into account Steffi's slump from mid 1990 due to the blackmail scandal which caused the loses.

She could only play whoever was in the other side of the court. And monica was supposed to be her big rival, they were supposed to have pushed each other their whole careers. Sadly it didn't happen & we'll never know how it would have played out. But the facts remain, steffi was the superior all round athlete & woukd have dominated monica everywhere except clay. Monica fans act like steffi hired the guy. Its ridiculous. But i do have real sympathy for monica, even tho i think she did use the stabbing as an excuse a lot
Martina had everything and more in terms of feel and intangibles, as Chris says. She's a once in a lifetime type player. I did wish she could have worked on her second serve and flattening out her forehand just slightly, or at least hitting it with more thrust, as so many shorter balls came from that wing. And then as the years went by she seemed to become more conservative with her backhand rather than using it to dominate points. But it's all done now and she has her place in history.

I was a Serena Williams stan but before her there was Martina. I was always amazed by how technical her game was. I still have my Yonex URQ 1700's she played with.

I wish I could tell Martina .. (people forget that she was named after Martina Navratilova) just how brilliant of a woman and tennis player she is!! I admire her game as literally one of the best ever! I remember how I used to always root for her not to win… primarily because I knew she was the best… and, I always rooted for the underdog to win. I never viewed Martina as an underdog, to me she was ALWAYS the one to beat!!! A hell of a career that must be respected and appreciated!! Much heartfelt love Martina!!! Martina's gift on the court was her footwork. watching her move should be basic training for every professional. her shot selection was possibly the best of anyone to ever pick up a racket. 1997. thats it haha
when she says you "gotta be nasty stop being a good girl on court" for me that just shows the mentality you gotta have to win majors and also what's lacking in today's new gen apart from a few like swiatek, andreescu, osaka.
One of the smartest tennis brains even to this day. She did not have the power other players had but I don't think I have seen many people who could construct a point in the way she could. Young players now who are used to watching heavy hitters should go and watch her matches.
I eagerly await Evert to interview [some more] larger than life tennis personalities like - Court, Serena, Graf & Navratilova. Besides, seeing one to one with Evert the other retired players like - Pierce, Muresmo, Sharapova, Myskina, Dementieva, Safina, Ivanovic, Radwanska, Safarova & Pennetta etc would be great...👍🏻
It's so beautiful to watch Chris Evert unpack these stories. She is such a good interviewer. Why is she so talented. Whoever edited the video, it's so annoying to repeat the soundtrack over and over and it's so loud.
I think it is easy to forget just how good Martina was, in light of the power tennis that came afterwards. Tactically, I think she had an amazing tennis brain - even when she speaks now you can hear the analyst in her - and her game just followed that. Not the most powerful but man, she would put the ball where you weren't. Appreciate that style of play more and more now...
WTA/Chris Evert: good interview going through Martin's career stepwise and pointing out Martina's strength. But, how could you forget/omit/ pay such little attention to Martina's success in Mixed Doubles, including versus men, and her great-great court chemistry with Leander Paes?! Those two could win points from virtually ANYWHERE on the court with 2 feet of height disadvantage versus their opponents!!

I fully agree - I don't think Steffi will ever do any extensive interviews the way most players are doing it. Steffi's silence has only raised her status and made her a bit of a myth among tennis athletes. She really is a legend and people can't read into her
Court sense and court placement - second to none in the history of female tennis. If only Hingis had more power and speed, she would've been the female Federer! My all time favorite female tennis player.
really cool watching how hingis could figure out how to win and use that touch she has, I haven't watched women's tennis in a while but 10 or so years ago watching women's tennis was tough because it became power tennis and got really ugly, everyone forcing the ball..committing so many errors and losing serve constantly, hingis played very interesting and chess-like tennis
When I was a kid I used to think Martina was so arrogant; now I realize she was always refreshingly honest and up front, always spoke her mind. And she always backed up that "arrogance" with the game and the results. Miss having her on the tour.
Of course Martina Hingis was a genius and she has such a natural and beautiful personality. But may I say that Chris Evert is a matured and brilliant looking female besides her success in tennis during the 1970th/80th? Wow! Just two really clever & smart and damn pretty good looking women!
I remember a story that came in 1994. This was after Monica's stabbing incident, she wasn't playing and was going through psychiatric treatment, additionally sad that her attacker didn't get punished and also dealing with her dad's illness - in short a very had phase. It seems Chris saw Monica at an airport. As soon as Monica saw her, it seems there was shock and sadness on Monica's face. As Chris tried to approach her, she ran away to the washroom , locker herself in. Chris tried to talk to her to come out but all she could hear were muffled cries from other side. Poor Monica, tennis world and thr German courts have been cruel to her :(
Hingis is amazing! Wish I appreciated her more when I watched her back in the day. I don’t think she got good press but now I just remember that crappy French Open final vs Graf and that AWFUL crowd. Always hated Graf and the French open since then. I mean how disastrous is this year’s open? Anyway, best women’s backhand ever!
There is a great longer piece in a Swiss newspaper about her, she was partly villified, even in her home country, because she was a confident, smart young lady and her behavior didn't fit the racial stereotype in conservative Switzerland.

There careers were entwined 99 French open affected Hingis s longevity and never won a slam after.

Meaning, an excellent interview will provide an aspect of the person being interviewed that we, the audience, were not aware of... Martina is such a breath of fresh air. I wish I could tell Martina .. (people forget that she was named after Martina Navratilova) just how brilliant of a woman and tennis player she is!! I admire her game as literally one of the best ever! I remember how I used to always root for her not to win… primarily because I knew she was the best… and, I always rooted for the underdog to win. I never viewed Martina as an underdog, to me she was ALWAYS the one to beat!!! A hell of a career that must be respected and appreciated!! Much heartfelt love Martina!!! Martina's gift on the court was her footwork. watching her move should be basic training for every professional. her shot selection was possibly the best of anyone to ever pick up a racket. 1997. thats it haha
when she says you "gotta be nasty stop being a good girl on court" for me that just shows the mentality you gotta have to win majors and also what's lacking in today's new gen apart from a few like swiatek, andreescu, osaka.

One of the smartest tennis brains even to this day. She did not have the power other players had but I don't think I have seen many people who could construct a point in the way she could. Young players now who are used to watching heavy hitters should go and watch her matches.

It's so beautiful to watch Chris Evert unpack these stories. She is such a good interviewer. Why is she so talented. Whoever edited the video, it's so annoying to repeat the soundtrack over and over and it's so loud.
I think it is easy to forget just how good Martina was, in light of the power tennis that came afterwards. Tactically, I think she had an amazing tennis brain - even when she speaks now you can hear the analyst in her - and her game just followed that. Not the most powerful but man, she would put the ball where you weren't. Appreciate that style of play more and more now...

Court sense and great anticipation are the hallmarks of Martina's game. You either have it or you don't.
WTA/Chris Evert: good interview going through Martin's career stepwise and pointing out Martina's strength. But, how could you forget/omit/ pay such little attention to Martina's success in Mixed Doubles, including versus men, and her great-great court chemistry with Leander Paes?! Those two could win points from virtually ANYWHERE on the court with 2 feet of height disadvantage versus their opponents!!

I fully agree - I don't think Steffi will ever do any extensive interviews the way most players are doing it. Steffi's silence has only raised her status and made her a bit of a myth among tennis athletes. She really is a legend and people can't read into her

really cool watching how hingis could figure out how to win and use that touch she has, I haven't watched women's tennis in a while but 10 or so years ago watching women's tennis was tough because it became power tennis and got really ugly, everyone forcing the ball..committing so many errors and losing serve constantly, hingis played very interesting and chess-like tennis

When I was a kid I used to think Martina was so arrogant; now I realize she was always refreshingly honest and up front, always spoke her mind. And she always backed up that "arrogance" with the game and the results. Miss having her on the tour.

Of course Martina Hingis was a genius and she has such a natural and beautiful personality. But may I say that Chris Evert is a matured and brilliant looking female besides her success in tennis during the 1970th/80th? Wow! Just two really clever & smart and damn pretty good looking women!

She did. I watched it 3 days ago. It was good. Monica is my favorite tennis player of all time, male or female.
I remember a story that came in 1994. This was after Monica's stabbing incident, she wasn't playing and was going through psychiatric treatment, additionally sad that her attacker didn't get punished and also dealing with her dad's illness - in short a very had phase. It seems Chris saw Monica at an airport. As soon as Monica saw her, it seems there was shock and sadness on Monica's face. As Chris tried to approach her, she ran away to the washroom , locker herself in. Chris tried to talk to her to come out but all she could hear were muffled cries from other side. Poor Monica, tennis world and thr German courts have been cruel to her :(
Hingis is amazing! Wish I appreciated her more when I watched her back in the day. I don’t think she got good press but now I just remember that crappy French Open final vs Graf and that AWFUL crowd. Always hated Graf and the French open since then. I mean how disastrous is this year’s open?

There is a great longer piece in a Swiss newspaper about her, she was partly villified, even in her home country, because she was a confident, smart young lady and her behavior didn't fit the racial stereotype in conservative Switzerland.
