    One of the best matches of Serena's career. Didn't miss a 1st serve in the 2nd set, served 87% for the match, 10 aces, no doubles, 38 winners - total demolition.

    This is one of the best match Serena played vs a low confidence Hingis. I don't think Serena missed a first serve the entire 2nd set. She would be 99% of her opponent in this Goddess mode.

      well, she defeated absolutely everyone on the tour in this kind of form.
      Davenport, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Justine Henin, Mary Pierce and Martina Hingis have /all/ said that Serena was their least favourite to play because she could take them right out of the match, with ease.

      I think Hingis had the confidence. Hingis was simply outplayed. I think Hingis intelligence in the sport actually made the Williams Sisters better because they realized power alone is not enough to dominate the sport.

    These are the kind of matches that drove Hingis into retirement. The game was going into a different direction. More power and big serving. Serena destroyed Hingis again in 2002 Miami open 6-4 6-0.

      The depths and pace of serena's serves and ground strokes combined with Hingis's weak serve, made it hard for her to dictate play, which was her only real chance to win... If she wanted to win another major durng this part of a career she would have needed to get extremely fit and stronger and develop better serve.

    • @marfu1119
      @marfu1119 Před rokem +4

      @@mikeg8375 Her only and last chance to win another Grand Slam was at the 2002 Australian Open. Hingis had 4 championship points in that match. Serena didn't compete at the Australian Open that year. Everyone knows Serena was on another level in 2002 and Serena destroyed and overpowered Hingis couple of times in 2002 which made her decided to retire from the game.

      The whole "Venus and Serena drove Hingis out of tennis with their power game" narrative is largely overblown. Firstly, she doesn´t even have a negative record against them. She ist 11-10 against Venus and 6-7 against Serena, and 2-2 in doubles.
      Then you might say that the Williamses won more of their later matches, which is kind of true. But actually, Hingis won the last match against Venus (Rome 2006), and famously beat both of them back to back as late as the 2001 Australian Open.
      And if you look at other head-to-heads it becomes even more ridiculous. Clijsters for example is 1-2 against Venus and 2-7 against Serena. Henin 6-8 versus Serena and 2-7 versus Venus.
      And with all due respect, we might indeed say that Serena´s power game drove Sharapova into retirement (2-20).

      @@fundhund62 Hingis could beat them if she had a great day. But, they wont more grand slam matches against her after they learned how to beat her. So they made her into a Wozniaki who could not win a slam once they were around. I think this is the context.

  • @beaglesrfun5896
    @beaglesrfun5896 Před 10 měsíci +12

    Hingis came onto the scene when the power games of Graf and Seles were toward the end of their careers. Lindsay provided power also, but she was not yet fit. Hingis relied on her genius and all-around game to win titles. With the emergence of the Williams sisters, Hingis could no longer evolve as a singles player. Serena and Venus played her game (groundstrokes, serves, and volleys) but with more power and foot speed.

  • @TheMistressAditi
    @TheMistressAditi Před 11 měsíci +11

    In my humble opinion: Yes, Hingis was overpowered by the new Tennisplayers like Serena Williams. But I too think, that she lacked the will to force herself to the gym and get more powerful, too. She was used to rely on her wits and ball-feeling, but with the rise of the powerplayers that wasn't enough anymore. But she wasn't willed to change and put in the hard hours - so she lost.

    • @seensay2132
      @seensay2132 Před 10 měsíci +4

      Wait, but in 2000 supposedly she hit the gym and put on some bulk after losing the 1999 US Open, trying to keep pace with the bigger hitters. They reported she felt the extra weight slowed her down. Just goes to show you can teach technique and sharpen mental toughness. But you can’t teach someone to grow 6 inches and produce athleticism they weren’t naturally gifted with lol

However, the Williams sisters learned that coupled with athleticism and power and spelled lights out for Hingis career.

      I don't feel sorry for Hingis when she was at the top in late 90s she was bragging and at the 2000 US Open she claimed the William sisters only have 1 grand slam each and she has 5 grand slams. She can eat her words now as both William sisters have surpassed her in grand slam titles won. 7 for Venus and 23 for Serena.

      @marcel fu she was always running her mouth, never really passed up a chance to talk trash in her younger days. When she came back In both of her comebacks she was much more humble. Her and her arch rival Venus even played doubles together in world team tennis and it looked like they both enjoyed each other's presence. It's amazing what some maturity can do.

      Definitely agree, in 1997 she had no real competition when she won 3 slams that season and even almost winning the French open that year. After 97 she only won 2 more grand slams at the Australian Open. Once player like the William sisters and Davenport came up with big serve and power hitting she was second best and that's why she retired in 2003 at only 22 years old the game was evolving even more around that time.

      Yes. Her contemporary Davenport actually stayed relevant up to 2005 by working to improve her game each year, whereas Hingis’s game stagnated and even deteriorated in some ways. In fairness all the players who peaked in the 90s other than Lindsay and Capriati faded fast in the early 2000s. Pierce managed a decent 2005 and that’s about it.
