    I had a similar experience driving a Bolt yesterday to a trailhead, gaining about 3,500 feet of elevation down gravel forest roads. On the way down, the 30-minute drive down the hill gained about 5% battery, a charging rate roughly equivalent to actually plugging the car into a level 2 charger. The fact that this happened in spite of the fact that I was driving 20 mph down gravel roads - with the air conditioner running - is quite remarkable.

      That's awesome. Always figured it must not be too hard to gut the driveshaft, trans and engine, hook up a motor directly to the rear diff and then put a big-ass LFP battery pack into the truck frame. Honestly not sure why people don't do more EV truck conversions, would be a great vehicle to have at a farm to tow stuff around short distances, or make trips into town.

    Loved the coverage of the R1T handling a huge mountain climb. I guess Rivian will need to do something to include offline mapping so the average traveler heading to various sites can rely on their system, but still not bad. I loved the sites and the educational part too. Now, I'll have to bring my Fisker Ocean Ultra (when I get it in October 2023) and drive it up Mt. Evans with the family! I did a similar personal test with my VW ID.4 from Tacoma, WA (Elev. 100ft) to Chinook Pass (Mt Rainier, elev. 5,430ft) last month. 75 miles each way and I averaged something like 2.3m/KWh going up and something like 4.4m/KWh coming home. Very impressed with the results. It removed my fear of driving my EV into the mountains.

    • @e-redj
      @e-redj Před rokem +4

      It’s all done by different levels of regenerative breaking. It is in fact much smoother than going low gear on an ICE and you still don’t use the friction breaks, and the energy generated during the downhill is deeded back to the battery.
      This is one of the major advantages of battery electric vehicles.

    Efficiency on the road would be somewhat better going down if you drove faster doing more coasting and less regen.

    • @priceburnett
      @priceburnett Před rokem

      But you wouldn't gain any energy (especially if you say put it in neutral). Regen braking isn't an on or of type thing with one peddle driving. You can the speed you want to go with the peddle and it will apply Regen or power depending on what you want. So when going down hill instead of coasting and having to have the car speed up and break when it gets to fast you just kind of set the speed with the peddle and it will Regen as needed.

    • @WilliamAArnett
      @WilliamAArnett Před rokem

      @@priceburnett Yes, but if you go faster you do more coasting and less regen. Coasting is more efficient: it doesn’t put energy into the battery instead it converts the potential energy directly to forward motion; this is more efficient at any reasonable speed. (Obviously, you can’t just put it in neutral on that road! )

    • @ab-tf5fl
      @ab-tf5fl Před rokem +3

      The argument that coasting is more efficient than regen is true in the sense that driving on flat ground is always more efficient than driving up a large hill and back down again.
      But, once you are already at the top of the hill, having already paid that energy to climb all the way up, you absolutely want to be regening on the way back down. If you drive faster and "coast", that simply means that your air resistance (which increases with the square of your speed) is higher, so the energy that would have gone back into the battery is instead lost to aerodynamic drag.

    • @WilliamAArnett
      @WilliamAArnett Před rokem

      @@ab-tf5fl But the energy lost to aero drag at modest speeds is less than the losses in the battery. If you put X kWh into a battery you’re lucky to get 0.8X kWh back out. The additional Aero drag at 30 mph versus 25 mph is much less than that.

    • @e-redj
      @e-redj Před rokem

      But the point of doing regen downwards is not to use the friction breaks, and so having a more controlled and secure drive. And as someone else pointed out, to get some of the energy back you already paid for. 😬

So the down reading of using 3 miles per/kWh which is wrong since it net gained energy. He did say should have read a negative miles which is not really correct. Please lose the plastic music. It detracts from the video, especially when it's an endless loop. The video was good, but the "music" was annoying.
