Your remarks about English horn vs oboe really struck me. The Eh is SO much easier: lots more air used, so much less pressure needed, feels so much more natural than oboe breathing. For me the main Eh challenge is hitting a clean C#. I now have put some cork in the D key hole to make it a bit easier. I must say though, that even for an elderly amateur like me, the Eh is a side dish, lovely sound and fun to play, but it's not the eerie beauty of the oboe, even with all its challenges.
I would totally agree, thank you for the comment. There are of course a few little things that are specific to the EH but overall it's much easier like I said. I love the oboe still a bit more probably because it's more challenging and when it works well the satisfaction is great!

I share your experience with marigaux vs. Loreè oboes and American vs. “European” reeds. Not playing a marigaux at the moment (Ludwig Frank), but I always see myself going back to one. Editing to add when I learned the importance of matching the oboes bore with the dimension of the staples my wold changed.

I've written about this before, but the Bulgheroni I bought a year ago continues to change in lovely ways. Try one if you can. I wound up buying new at their workshop because 2 years of searching and I couldn't find a used one (Opera model). I have found the oboe sound I hear in my mind.
