- Samsung says the Galaxy S20 is the start of a whole new generation, but in our review, Dieter Bohn thinks it's a little more evolutionary than that - it's more of an S11. Still, the new camera system works, the 5G is nice to have, and the 120Hz screen is great. Unlike with the S20 Ultra, Samsung isn't over extending itself.

No mention of memory capacity like wtf is the point of high res photos if I have no space after taking ten pictures? What if I wanted to put the complete series of a show on my phone for traveling in areas with no cell service?

We asians generally like our photos to come out brighter and smoothened in general.I thinks since samsung is a south korean company they always opt for that.
Its because we generally have a lot of pimples and are dusk in colour.....so the process samsung does makes us look better whereas most of americans and europeans are white or blacks....when the same brightning effect is applied to them the end result is not so great...coz they are already white in colour and smoothening their face means sacrificing some details while taking a potrait shot....but tats what we asians exactly want....we dont like our pimples to be visible in our pics.

Samsung went with calling it the S20 because of the year being 2020. They're using the year = model system.

S9 is pretty much an S8 while the S9+ is as powerful as the S10e
You still probably have two more years of security patches. I think the S7 was still getting security patches from Samsung last year.

I've been upgrading since the S7 and I totally agree with your review, the S20 is the best one yet and more polished. Yeah, there are phones that do this or that better but the S20 feels like a more complete package overall.
I'm the opposite, I haven't felt the need to improve since the S7 lol
I went from the 7 to the 9..if you went from the 7 to the 20 you wont be able to put your phone down for a week .

@@DW94576 Depends on your comparison. The iPhones have at least WAY more options than for example the Pixel phones and Stock Android. And most of the time you just don't need to change those options anyway...

I'm loving my S10e for the small size. Would have loved to have a similar model but with a bump to 4000 MAh. That would be epic.
The s20 isnt really calling me to buy it tbh.
s10e with this much battery would be.. heavy.. i think the s20 is the middle ground for size/battery tbh
I also don't see any reason to upgrade from S10. I don't think that a little bit improved camera and 120 Hertz worth of spending 1000$
S20 is appealing me a lot.its smaller but has a 6.2 inch screen.more than s10e and s10! And it's hardware wise way superior.
But yes,I dont recommend anyone who has a s10 to buy this.if your like me using s9 plus or maybe s8plus....its time to upgrade😍

Dieter, why won't you make an independent channel? For real, most of us only watch and hear (podcast) The Verge because of the quality you put into this content. Think about it !
I had the note9 and loved the thing, but I noticed samsung starts to give you updates that actually forces you to upgrade your phone, because the phones become buggy and glitchy once a new model comes out.
Upgraded to the s20 ultra and I am very satisfied
For real, I'll only buy a Samsung flagship again when I have some considerable disposable income. Galaxy S7, S8, S9, all of them start pretty well but end up performing just like their A# line after a few years.

@@justinn7746 naw apple slowed there phones down for the same reasoning dont completely buy into that battery hype it was just one of there excuses, my wife had an apple iPhone 6 she held on out as long as she could, then they launched that update and her phone started going haywire to the point where she threw it and broke the screen numerous times, she ended up switching over to Android because she was so frustrated, I noticed android started doing that after Apple started doing that with there phones, it's a good marketing strategy for the suppliers but its bad on the consumers smh.
I had the note 8 for a few years and never had a problem with its updates...... I have the s20 ultra now

For my usage it can get up to more than 6 hours with 120 hz on. Bluetooth off and dark mode on. Would be nice to have dynamic refresh rate tho.

I got 9 hours screen on time yesterday with 60hz and adaptive battery turned on with 10% left. I reckon there was at least another half hour left on my S20+.
The tuning thing is a beast. I reckon it would do 7 hours with 120hz.

I'm not lying when i say i get 8+ hours of battery life(s20+) somedays with 120hz turned on, provided i use the dark mode on. Around 7/7.5 with dark mode turned off. But that's probably because i don't use it for gaming or any heavy duty stuff. I have seen contrasting comments from other users though, with some struggling to get even 5 hours. I believe the exynos and snapdragon disparity is the main reason for this confusion. Exynos apparently uses a lot of power and is not as efficient as the snapdragon variant. Hence, its the snapdragon versions which are getting high praise for the battery life whereas the exynos is being criticised.

Living with S9 it just made sense to upgrade after 2 versions. The camera upgrade is so noticable.
The extra cameras really makes a difference, to not mention the better quality overall.
I've got a s8+ and the battery is quite bad, I can't go a day without charging like 2/3 times, but other than that I'm going to university soon so I don't know if it's worth it. As I'm also thinking of buying a MacBook so an iPhone is more compatible
Got my S20plus about a month ago, and I'm loving most of it. This is my first galaxy phone and I've resisted coming on board for many reasons. The s20 phone felt like it was on par with the overall experience of the pixel phone, but unfortunately the main selling point, the camera, is far from perfect.
Have anyone else experienced ghosting or reflections while taking photos in low light areas that have strong focused lights e.g. in a park at night with lampposts around, or a dark room with candles such as a birthday party... ? I'm seeing these light sources reflected in my photo and there's no way I can pitch my phone to get rid of them...
For those who doesn't want to watch a lot of camera comparison vs last generation, S20 and S20+ improved low light shots in the Night photos option, improved the zoom (obviously) and improved the details overall. You get a sharper and brighter image when compared to the S10 line. That's it.

Thanks for the great review. I have this S20 pink 5G phone, the sound is just incredible its like stereo sound, and the screen is just gorgeous. Just love it, and I agree the Pink glass on it is simply beautiful.😊

I had the S9 and did a update, my phone crashed after that. Just got the S20 on Monday and I am pleased.
i was pleasantly surprised about how much I like this phone. It's lighter and slimmer than the iPhone 11 Pro and I love the pro photo mode.

Watching on my Galaxy S6. Does the job just fiiine.
My Google Pixel 4xl 3700 mAh battery with 90htz on dark mode or lite mode, I get between 6 sot being the min up and maximum between 6.5 to 7 hours sot. Performance is very snappy all times. Video recording has improved alot even more after the updates.
The Galaxy S10 is the first nice phone I’ve ever had and I love it. So happy to still have the headphone jack! I don’t think Samsung did enough to convince me to upgrade.
the S20 makes a lot of sense for me coming from a 3 year old phone. got me the s20+. feels like a rocketship compared to what i used to have.

Recently bought a refurbished S20 and I'm really impressed with it's performance, just wanted a smaller lighter device this phone ticks all boxes, amazing display as well.
I use the S10+ and if I were to upgrade it would be the base model. Why, the form factor at 6.2 is almost the perfect size for my needs. The 120hz display & 12gigs is very enticing. This is the one time I prefer the base model over the other two? Very good in depth review!

I went with the S20+. It's my favorite of the 3 models. Has the best balance of size, features, and price IMO.
I ordered mine 2 days ago and it will arrive tomorrow... so excited for this one, and I actually order it in pink. Soon my unboxing will be coming on my channel 😍 can't wait

Watching it on my S20+. Pretty excited. The only thing I'm noticing is we in India have the EXYNOS variant (eye roll), and the battery with the 120HZ is okay-ish. A whole day of video watching got me nearly 5 hrs of SOT, however in daily use for the past 2 days I'm getting about 4 hrs or less. Let's see. Still pretty excited about it.
The latest ATF update added a great macro imaging feature and I'm now totally satisfied with the focussing on my Ultra... if they launched it in this configuration, no one would have complained.

But as per my opinion, every Galaxy series phone reviews should also compare Exynos-based variant Vs Snapdragon-based variant models.
These reviews are not just complete without including these aspects.
I just purchased the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and is just learning how to use it. I am not that much into taking photos or videos since I have other cameras just for that. I want it for just as a phone and hope it gives me great service and last a long time.

I like how every reviewer praises the iPhone like it's a high end product with high end camera when in fact that Samsung and iphone used the same company for camera lol. Samsung has the best screen, customization, best looking, more features then iPhone will ever have.

I upgraded to this Sunday and I didn't have to i had a s8 for 3years and its still going strong...the s lines are good ,dependable and last longer...I love the s20 though
Very good review. For me I'm keeping my s10+ but if I upgraded the base model would do me just fine. But I'm on Verizon and as of yet no base model due to the 5g. But they will have it down the road?
