- In this episode of Joey's Garage I determine whether the myth that some blue GY6 "Racing" CDIs are filled with rock or gravel. Is this fact or fiction? I cut open 5 different CDIs to determine what is the truth.

It would be cool if you sent the guts to big clive so he could do a circuit teardown of them. I was much more interested in the electronics than then packaging.
I was thinking about cutting one open to see what's inside, so I enjoyed the video in that respect -but I couldn't care less if the best ones were encapsulated using dingleberries -I'm interested in their performance. I suspect they are encapsulated to prevent vibration damage to the PCB, and then, secondly, to provide a heat-sink. In the case of the latter, the rock probably works better to aid heat dissipation than does solid epoxy/rubber/plastic alone!
EXCELLENT Video. Thanks for Scrapping your CDI's for our viewing pleasure.
Thanks for watching and the comment. View my other videos, sub, and share. The party is just starting!!
I was about to say that.
Thanks for the video
that gravel is actually silica gravel, they use it so it acts as an insulator and keeps moisture out of the electrical components.
+anubis1100 Thanks for the info. Cheers
Its been too long Joey. Welcome back.
Just purchased one of these to replace the blue one I have it's no longer working so hopefully this will fix it.
Video excelente ! Gracias por mostrar los componentes de los C.D.I. "
Saludos desde mexico !
I love what u doing with cdi unit make ask u a question which one is gd Cdi for bike thank you again
Very well done. Str8 to the point no ba just content that's what I like to see
hello can you tell me how to wire te last blue one on the video to a keeway arn 125? i have matching wire plugs but it doesnt work i think it has a wrong wiring enplacement.
hello my friend from greece! i have a gy6 50cc scooter i have rebuild the engine with new parts everything works fine but in 2 months the scooter refused to start easy i must make many kick starts to start and its like dies slowly... so i have change new carburator new coil new bobbins new spark plug and new cdi ..... but! it wont start again axept 2 times and alot of kick starts! i have spark but it is too weak ! so as i have see the mixture wet the spark plug and the engine of course wont start! any idea ??
lol you handle that ax pretty well. I thought for sure you would cut that circuit board. Great video
Thanks brother. That was one of my first videos almost a year ago. It's crazy that I have almost been doing this for so long. But it has been fun, and an adventure
wont the only way to know if an aftermarket cdi is doing anything is by using a timing light before and after to see if it advances the timing ? or whatever claims they say to do
I agree. I put a link to a really good video of a cdi test using a timing light. That video was my beginning adventure into CZcams. And just a test to see what was inside.
Thanks for watching.
Can anyone help? I have a toa toa pony 50 cc scooter I did the cdi test and unhooked the battery while it was running and it stayed running. So that's a AC system right? Well I tried a racing cdi (ac) and nothing. Then I tried a dc cdi and it started but it's breaking up when I apply throttle. So I'm confused.
im refering to the orange cdi that varies advance by the way.
what about the bright red ncy cdi boxes? anyone have one of these.. the brand name and. being experiensive has me curious.. does it offer quick easy cold starts and a desired advance with acceleration? these were not talked about in vid..
Joey dies a battery operated scooter still have a magneto ign, system, or does it have battery powered cd box?
i have a 260 lihia vog water cooled it has 8 pin cdi. it utilizes 5 pins...i have a red white....black ...red black...orange and green. any one know what wire goes where? i can not this info any place
Hey Joey is your GY6 or your scooter or whatever your CDI box is in is it AC or DC? They're showing that box that orange one that you're using on eBay to be DC
I have just stuked with installing the ignition system of honda cd 90. I have disassemble every part of the engine and reassemble them after cleaning and applying lubricating oil on some parts.I am a self learner but now I have a trouble with installing ignition system. I set the statar and then I don't no hove set up wiring that are ahead on my proccess. I would be very much thankful for you to if you can help me to finish this work by giving me information that are required. I want to know how statar wires connect to the next component and what is that next component.then how the spark plug connect to the battery and what are the other component related to the ignition system that I want to be aware, such as mechanical breaker, coil .......I would be much oblidge if anyone can help me.!
Hello my gy6 just keeps spinning over I've checked the spark but I think it's very weak how would I get it stronger? Donthink it's the cdi?
Thank you Joes your question..my rides is Honda future 125 cc..oh by the way I'm a Malaysian so I'm looking for gd Cdi cause my bike and I worry if I'm right place to ask the question..thank you bro
I have a 2018 falcon 250 its aa gy6 i need a upgraded cdi can u help
HI, good video, I have 2 scooters 50cc and 150cc chinese specials, I have the original CDIs that came with bike and it works fine, I bought both the orange and the blue Amazon ones, IN the 50cc the only one that works is the blue one and it seems to run better, it will not start with the orange one,,,,the 150 will not start with either the blue or the orange one, but starts with orginal, what do you think is happening? IS this a timing problem? TY for the videos!
Joey. I sent u a email on my v star. I know Its a cruiser but the idea is the same. I have constant reading thru my plug wires when the key is on but plugs don't fire so is that bad or good thing? For my cdi I mean. Is it ok ?
Hey I need help if you change your exhaust system do you got to change your spark plug
i want easy starting but better throttle response and no limit.. if the ncy works like this too and is better quality i will pay the 40 to 60 for one.. i rather get the desired results for more money than buy whats cost less and my engine run weaker than stock
Which collors of wires goes to the black cdi
nice video aka joey shards garage cdi / stashbox
Yo. Thanks Joey! Somebody had to do it!
Okay, but you miss to write their schematics. Can you draw them, looking at the traces on pcbs?
Most people just would use the lubrication from the gear oil and use no
grease at all. Also, is it ok to mix the two together(grease on the gear
bearings and then use gear oil after closing the gear box and wht type of
bearing grease would u recommend.
Guys like you, allow me to have the confidence to start and finish my
repair projects.
Do some videos on the differences between stock/aftermarket products and
the differences between Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese
and European bikes.
If you start to get rid of your stock parts on a Chinese bike for hp
parts could it really pay off in the long run and are the Chinese frames
worth the expense ! Can you also explain the proper way to do a compression test, valve adjustment, fuel/air adjustment and which parts affect my fuel economy.
Thank you, so much
im refering to the aluminum orange cdi.that advances only during acceleration.. so does anyone had experience with the ncy brand cdi.. its the most expensive it ranges from 39.99 to 59.99 on ebay.. it was not discussed on video. theres also a cdi you can adjust.. those were not discussed either... im curious about the red ncy brand cdi. what kind of characteristics does it have.. does it offer easy cold starts. and a steady advance with as engine speeds increase or is it just a show piece with a brand name making it pricey? like the blue and orange cdis.... over advanced at idle
if it offers easy cold starts and advances seamlessly with acceleration i will pay the extra money for one.. any input is appreciated...
why burn ignition coil on scooter?
im refering to the aluminum orange cdi that varies advance, not the plastic orange one.. in my last message to clarify..
please anyone. how well does the bright red. plastic ncy. brand cdi function.. theres has to be some desirable function as it cost the most out of all cdi brands. it looks just like a factory cdi. except its red and it has the ncy logo in white on it. anyone had experience with these? are the the best or just overpriced because of the brand?
Can a bad cdi prevent a rkta hornet scooter from having any electrical power at all? Just put a new battery in and lights won't even come on...no power at all
Wow thanks for the video. Learn a lot today and found out there is AC and DC version. My 2-pin has only 1 wire but i bought AC Racing CDI (Orange) from aliexpress. Cold start seems hard (And yes idling is high) but after warming up starting has no issues. Will try the Casoli CDI as recommended by you.
Googled the difference: How do I know if my CDI is AC or DC?
Your CDI has two plugs, a 4-pin and a 2-pin. ... If the 2-pin connector has only 1 wire going to it, it's a DC CDI. If there are 2 wires attached to the 2-pin connector, then it's an AC CDI. Note: A very few DC-powered CDI systems will have two wires on the two-pin connector.
I have a 139QMB engine short case. Which stator do I need for it, and is it 6 or 8 coil?
+WILLIEBEATZ ProDuctionZ Agreed, you will have to check to find out.
are you sure the fine sand material isnt to asorb moisture or antispate heat?
I Joey I m from México thaks 4 old you videos
cool vids! learned a lot. thanks
Thanks Dennis... This was my first video and I had NO idea what I was doing.
i jusy put in a new engin in my 150cc scooter i ground all the wires an it run great but the problem is when i rev it up all the lights blu head lights gas gauges\lights blinkers still work back light still work wat is it that happen
Syxx Williams does the green light on this cdi suppose to blink when u tryna start the scooter?
I have a 100cc big bore kit in my 50cc scooter and a stock CDI. is that why I'm not seeing any difference in speed? Thanks in advance.
Did u re-tune the rest of the bike? Carb and CVT?
If you are still interested, with a big bore kit, to really get more speed, it needs a higher gear ratio, and CVT tuning, you can possibly get another 3?20 mph with a gear swap,
Cdi recommend for gilera sp 180
Where buy parts
I have tested a bunch of them and you can not go buy the color of the box saying one is better then the other from what I found was some scooter work better with say the raceing cdi but a differet year scooter buy the same maker may run better with a performance cdi. thanks for the video my friend I wanted to see inside them
Apparently you can't get the gold casoli CDI box anymore. I tried to go to their website and it looks like it's been closed down. Any other suggestions as where to get it?
Sorry again about missing comment, I get a bunch. NYCScooterParts is still in business and has them in stock. I talked to the owner today to confirm. Biggest thing is knowing whether you have AC or DC. Go to his website and order or call
Todd: I wouldn't spend $40£ on that, it's just one or 2 analogue filters (That CDI is cheap, overpriced with mediocre stability (yes, timing will change with temperature!)). You can easily build similar or a better performing CDI yourself with $£2-3 worth's of components.
Big Cheese
1. Most people don't have time and the skill for it
2. You need welding gear (Good quality one's to be perfect on assembling a cdi)
3. It is not as simple as ordering some components and "mashing" them together..
4. Rather than complaining about the quality, start making and selling them your self.
korohon: 1.Yes, everyone is entitled to buy whatever overpriced shi.. product they want. 2. Absolutely not, a sheap-ass soldering iron is all that's needed (a tool every man should already have in his/her toolbox and be able to use (even my retired MOM has one!). 3. Yes, for an analouge AC CDI it pretty much is just that simple as you described. 4. I have no interest in contributing/selling overpriced junk, there are however several people making adjustable and unpotted ones usable for this application for a FAIR price. Meanwhile, free for all, this one controller I designed for variants with 2-toothed single pickup setup: www.partsim.com/simulator/#121705. Want a fully adjustable digital one? I designed one as such too, open source and free for anyone to use!
@@bigcheese781 Next time I go to buy something I'll have to remember to run it past you first to make sure it's a FAIR price seeing how you've pretty much appointed yourself to the position of "fair price police". Oh and how about you post a list of what "every man should have in his/her toolbox" and a list of all skills they should have. You know, since you're the Big Cheese and all.
So joeys which one is gd n best performance Cdi u know for bikers upgrade..thank you
+lemio gable What kind of ride? My preference is an advancing timing CDI. It acts like a stock CDI in the low RPM range, but changes in the higher RPM range

NICE VIDEO BRO
Thanks for watching. Subscribe and stay tuned. More content is on the way.
I have the purple adjustable CDI, it has clear potting, and starts easy, the red or orange my scoot will not even start!
type of cdi my skyteam 50cc ??? is god for my biks blue el goud.??? from norway
Did you say this causes excessive wear to the engine?
Yes it does, first because it has no rev-limiter so the engine could rev high until it damages itself. And second, the advanced timing will give the spark before the piston reaches to the top dead center (TDC) so it will be forced to go down while the crank is still pushing it up, so the piston will shake which allows the piston rings to dig into the cylinder walls so your engine will leak compression and eventually burn oil.
But yeah, gy6 cylinder kits are so affordable and it's fun to install them.
Note: the effect is not instant, it took me around 20.000km before it started burning some oil. Cheers.
good job buddy
+Steven Buchholz Thanks for watching.
very good friend, take like
Going with the 100cc big bore kit if all else fails...
I installed 2 of the blue boxes on my gy6 150cc engine and they both smoked and burned up. I have an AC system. Are these really that poor of quality?
Yes. I would go with stock or orange. Either way, they don't make much of a difference. And where u getting them from. The super cheap ones are even bigger piles of garbage
Joey's Garage I got them off eBay. Yes they were really cheap. Both of them smoked as soon as I hooked them up. The stock one works fine.
Sounds like you may either have a dc system and ordered ac cdi's, or somehow the ones you ordered were dc cdi's because you do in fact have ac. I got cassoli and it's been fine for years. 😁.
Joey's Garage the Cdi’s that I tried are just like the blue one that you have. My carts engine will run when the battery’s wires are disconnected so I assume it is an A/C system. That’s all I’m basing it off of though.
Mike Moore What is your scooters full model ?
For example, mine is: Keeway Focus
Just go to google and type your bikes full name followed by "manual"
Edit: You should see if your scooter is ac or dc

#shoutout from #germany
are CDI's damaged after the look inside or still good for scooter?
+steffo2oo2 They were damaged behind repair or usage. But a very cool reminder on my entry into CZcams. Thanks for watching
:)
Hey man...nice channel...cool videos..
Thank you very much. I appreciate the kind words
sweet air in the intro
+Justin McCollum Thanks. Wanted it higher. Haven't used that intro in a while
the last 1 is for 4 strokes and the other are for 2 strokes I know they lie and say they work for what ever but a advancing is best on four strokes and retarding is for 2 strokes the red 1s are the best I think they are called power spark you can adjust timing with them
I like it a lot!.
For those of you thinking a CDI needs a heat-sink? Think again, how does it work? What is the difference between power and energy, which makes heat?
It's great that you're trying to educate people, but try doing it in such a way that you don't come off as a condescending, arrogant, asshole.
Is a gy6 cdi an AC or DC unit?
Ac
Both the smaller one is AC the larger one is DC
He Joey just test all on a dyno. Compare the graphs. I do 2 strokes and all these cdi units are selling in my country. I even bought the 4 stroke cdi units and put them on 2 strokes and opposite. I dont see or feel difference. Only at idle.
+Guido Samson I would love to, but don't have access to a dyno. Maybe one day I can do a revisit to a beginning video
Joey's Garage wel i checked on an osciloscope and some boxes are juat identical to the original. Its mostly people getting cought by all the talk
I heard that Tao Tao CDI's have pork fried rice inside of them.
Thanks brother 🌹 usefull video 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
So... Do they work? Will they hurt my engine?
They work, but don't expect a crazy amount of performance gains from them. I recommend the stock or advancing timing CDI. Thanks for watching and below is a link to a good CDI performance test.
czcams.com/video/p63JXW29tVo/video.html
Thanks Joey!
the more adanced would work with more compression and higher octain
cdi unit open and close
So as far as I can tell there are no microcontroller chips or anything else special on the circuit board of these CDI modules, it's just the difference in components that gives a different timing curve. That's done with an R-C time constant network.
I have a new scooter, a Peugeot Speedfight 4 and the guy in the shop said to me that to make my scooter go a bit faster he has to change the software but I can clearly see in your video that none of these CDI modules have the necessary chips and circuitry capable of running any software.
Now I don't trust the guy from the shop anymore and I'm a bit confused, I did see there are some CDI modules that have an extra wire poking out and they say that when that wire is cut or not connected that only changing this one thing it will make the scooter go faster, I can't find any concrete info online or a schematic to confirm that statement... I would appreciate any help figuring this out, my scooter is very restricted and only goes about 48km/h tops which is really really slow, even with the wind in my back and going down the hill doesn't make it go faster so even someone on a bicycle going down the hill will go faster than me which is ridiculous and I want it changed.
I normally do everything myself but because it is brand new and I don't want to void the warranty I'm obligated to let the shop do the maintenance and the guy said he can make it go faster by changing the software and I think he just saying that to trick me into paying too much for what has to be done really to make it faster.
Any advice for me what I should do?
The more expensive cdi units are micro controled the efi box or the nicer one is micro processor control the ebay cheapies are not they're just way advanced timing all the way
Filler is completely irrelevant. The only thing that matter is the electric design and choice of components. How it even can be a market for these is beyond me. You can easily do timing advance with a couple of RC-filters (4-5 resistors and 1 or 2 caps). Also that last "fancy" one seems to do just that, analogue advance. Not digital with a pre-programmed curve. I would be expecting digital timing for 40-bucks.
The plastic or rubber is potting compound. Used for insulation, vibration, and moisture protection. It has nothing to do with the operation. You wasted a lot of time and money. What you should explore is the circuits and quality of the components.
Wow... so those heat sinks really do nothing, there's nothing connected to them, no thermal compound, anything. They're just for show.
Yeah. But they make the CDI look high speed for their "racing" performance. Awesome observation and something I never thought about. Thanks for watching!
+Joey's Garage im trying to put a 150cc motor on a 50 frame but the cdi on there now only has 5 wires the one that comes with the engen is a 6 pin what do i do
John Paul
So, you have a scooter, that is stock ~50cc, and the wiring harness it has only has 5 wires coming for the cdi ?
Does your 150cc engine come with a new wiring harness ? Or just a cdi ?
I realise that I am asking 6 months later.
That wasn’t gravel, that was a silica formula.
Yeah, one of my first. I could have done so many things better. Watching that video of myself is like watching myself as a kid. Just thinking, WTF was I thinking.
OMG Learn how to use a Hacksaw PLEASE!!!! FULL length strokes with LIGHT pressure... That was painful to watch ..LOL
And that's what she said. Lulz
Anyways.. Thanks for watching.
Just ordered a blue cdi came with orange coil and a spark plug.. Trying to score a few more mph. After i watched this..Hope i didnt just buy some useless crap...
+john floyd Let me know if u get some extra speed from them.
Joey.. you are correct.. The performance cdi.. Advances timing too much at idle.. Its hard to start with our current 40 degree mornings.. Starts ok when warm..
I shoulda bought the orange cdi you reccomend that. Only advances as rpms rise.. Just like a car or truck engine. But i notice theres like 3 or 4 of those variable cdis being sold. Same color and shape but different name.. Are they all same or which ones are junky immatations.. Which name is the best to buy?.. What about the red ncy brand cdi.. That one wasnt in the vid.. Does it advance with rpm change too? It must be one of better quality and function.. Its the most expensive.. I like more power. But the quickest and easiest starts mean alot to me as well..
Man, there ain't squat in those. Looks like all passive components. R-C circuits at their 'best'
so that is what is in there haha rubber side down my friend
Is it me or i don't see what's inside the CDIs? all i see is the guy talking and sawing
No. It was me. One of my first videos and poorly done. Shame, Shame, Shame !!!
COB+Epoxy = we don't want the other south-asian manufacturers to clone our stuff like we clone other peoples stuff..
CDIs don't even need to be digital really it's just packaging all the passive states machines in an IC.. It's easier to make a high quality CDI than it is to make a high quality amp or RF circuit..
Hello, I am Mr. Chan from Thailand, just saw the clip I admire and like me well. Because I was wondering about smashing cdi. Look at the internal circuit. Yes, no difference. I close my eyes and see that the internal circuit is not different but the value is caused by popular people. Don't know who advertises Reply to the plaintiff's customers at the point of word of mouth. Say good. The rest is good because the feelings are created. 55
If you have time, check the tci digital ignitor circuit 40 H.P. japan 1991 'suzuki bandit 400
How does this guy still have all fingers? lol 😂
My blue cdi was full of sand
I guess it used as an insulator
was about to dislike because you did not go into detail about the circuits inside (why i came here) but then i saw you have 0 likes and did not want to mess that up or be "that guy"
+aterack833 Thanks for not being "that guy" lol. This was one of my first shows I did, so it wasn't one of the best. And I wanted to talk about the circuits inside, but most were so badly damaged it wasn't possible. Except for the gold advancing timing CDI, the blue and organ boards were all the same. Even the markings on the boards were the same. I'm guessing a single Chinese manufacturer make them all, then a assembling company buys in bulk.
Either way, thanks for watching. My later videos should be much better.
***** i mostly just wanted to know what was inside so i could know how to repair them, also i have my whole harness off and wanted to test the ignition module but don't know what the pickup coil wires go to or what the pickup coils should output to the module
+aterack833 I believe I have seen someone post those reading on itistheride.boards.net. Let me look and see
Frank zappa
Just drop them in a vat of acetone its just epoxy
LOL $40 for sand
+beachbummm69 Thinking the sand was used as in insulation. Not sure it it's better of worse then the resin and gravel mix. And thanks for watching.
The gravel does no harm as long as it does not touch the components. It is simply to save on resin costs. The worst cases are metal as they tend to rust and let in water. So who gives a fuck?
these fukin cdi's are cheap do they make a better one?
The advancing timing OEM gold one from NYC Scooter Parts is recommended
@@JoeysGarage thanks.
its still made in china i want one from japan.
wow nyc store is pricey same items for way less lol
You're talking too much like a robot it seems very scripted loosen up relax and have fun making the video and try looking at the camera not the screen or whatever you're looking at That's off to the side
