The Chateau Diaries 084: The Chapel Lives On!

- Something magical happened at the chateau this week. We had mass in the chapel! We bought Lalande from the family of the Marquis of Nadaillac, who had been living here for 200 years. They were a deeply religious family, who built the Chapel of Saint Joseph in the garden. Two of the eleven children of the last marquis became priests. One of them, now in his 80s, came back to visit us and gave mass in the chapel. I felt very moved to attend mass given by someone who'd spent his childhood here and whose family built our chapel.
Along with our usual fun of cooking and hosting - and seeing the return of Mummy, Percy and Scotman, it was a very special week!
Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ 🏰
This weekly vlog follows the adventures of chatelaine Stephanie in her French 16th century home, the Chateau de Lalande, in the heart of rural France ❤️
I'm not very religious these days but I had tears in my eyes at the blessing of the Lalande's chapel. Your maternal grandmother would have been so proud - she looked so regal in the photo and clearly the beauty, poise and chic style has traveled down through your family.
Percy studying how to make the perfect Irish coffee is absolutely adorable!
Love that you respect the chapel at your Chateau. If I had a chateau with a chapel, I would invite religious people every week to hold services in it.
I love Mini Marie the Magic Machine and your delightful attitude.
You have brought life into the Chateau with your family, friends and volunteers and with your warmth, joy and laughter. And now you are bringing the spirit of God which is love back into the chapel. I was waiting for you to do that. It will bless you, the chateau and all who visit it. Well done, my dear
Thank you for restoring this special place of worship. I hope to renew my 25th marriage vows there, when it it is done.
You are the spitting image of your Grandmother, wow! She looks so graceful and beautiful in older age. Just gorgeous.
The beauty, the sound, the spirit of the chapel makes my heart soar. Thank you and feel better soon! 💖
How amazing and beautiful that his prayers are being answered, Stephane did find a way and the chapel continues to be worked on 🥰
The Irish ☘️ coffee made me giggle 🤭
The older vlogs are so charming
The service in the Chapel gave me such a lump in my throat, it was so moving and how wonderful for that family to be welcomed to return to what had been their home ! Pretty unique me thinks and so typical of Stephanie , the photo of Grandmama , gosh the three generations are so beautiful, pleased to see David back adding to Lalande life in the kitchen, highlight of course is Mum, Percy and Gerald
Sorry to hear you have been poorly so roll on a holiday with Gerald , Whiskey, honey and boiling water does the trick Stephanie x
Thank you! I should have thought of whiskey earlier - it’s always the answer! I also found the service incredibly moving, I shed a tear.
Stephanie, your laughter sounds like an opera singer singing a tune.
Stephanie I was so moved by the Spiritual feeling I felt in watching the church service. It was such a beautiful service and I felt the Holy Spirit even from this long distance in Northern California. This chapel is going to be stunning when it’s completed in all its glory.
Much love to you and all the folks at LaLande. 😘🙏❤️
I also am not very religious these days but I was raised Presbyterian. We went every Sunday when I was growing up and the church and the community around it was so open and welcoming. I don’t think I appreciated it enough when I was little but as an adult I’m so grateful for the spiritual foundation I received. Even if I see things differently now, I still feel supported by my experiences there. A lot of my extended family is catholic and I’ve spent a lot of time in mass over the years for various christenings, communions and confirmations. I’ve never minded going... there’s something about attending service that always brings some peace.
the best episodes are the ones with your family around. gerry is a joy. 💚
@Sherlock's cat they are family by choice. gerry's mom worked for isabelle when he was young and when she was born he babysat her. i think he lived with them.
As a non-practicing Catholic, I, too, would have been touched having mass in that ancient chapel that was about to begin restoration back then, and shall now soon finish its restorations. As both sacred ground and a masterpiece, you all at Lalande have done it justice.
Also, part of me wonders what came first, Ian's plastering skills or his talent at cake decorating. It has inspired me, and perhaps when I go home again, I might make a cake in that fashion for my family and friends to enjoy.
So moving to see this episode pop up in my suggestions today. After watching this episode again, Im so glad that the renovations in the chapel are almost complete and it will be excited to watch the first mass celebrated after the renovations.
Wow to see this vlog really made me tear up - considering the importance of today's vlog (with you recalling getting the support and funds to restore that LAST window to your chapel. Just seeing your mothers reactions and the swelling up of joy in your eyes on good Friday when you realized you could restore this beautiful piece of history BACK to its true glory. And seeing the chapel being used and cherished by others by the distant relatives and locals so many months ago, just wow. I think this will be the last of the vlogs for today. What a good way to end my day. Also pleased to see your family back together in your kitchen PLUS david and others
So lovely to see Mass in the Chapel. 🐓It seems an important component to the history and fabric of Lalande and you continue to enhanced its essence and verve. Thanks for giving us a peek into the varied vignettes of your week. Love that you insisted Percy place a bird plate at every other setting! 🍽 😉Get well Stephanie and thank you!🦚
What a sweet and beautiful service!!! That first song "Alleluia" is sung in American Protestant services too. One of my favorites!
Truly enjoyed my time spent watching your chateau diaries👸💝🏰❣️🙋🏻♀️cindy
I look forward to the day I can pray and sing in that chapel.
How special to have Mass in your beautiful Chapel 💒. The stained glass windows looked so pretty. A lovely vlog as always Stephanie 💛💐 Feel better soon - lots of tlc & cake 🧁🍰. Beautiful blessings Mandy 👑SA
Cake is a very good idea indeed 😋
Your heron? cup is just beautiful! Watching your blogs makes me wish NZ had old chateaux to live in and restore too!
I’m in America and feel the same.
If anyone should be thankful for the blessings of our Lord it should be you, Stephanie! You have made a wonderful life for so many and what you do and how you do it is very spiritual! You open your arms to all with such a wonderful giving personality and heart that maybe you need to reflect a little bit on the blessings you have been given! Your parents, your personality, your voice, the joy with which you begin each day...should not be taken lightly! I will pray that you begin to explore your spiritual being as frequently and thoroughly as you have explored your chateau! I absolutely love your videos!
Dear Stephanie,
Gerald is absolutely hysterical... "the cake was bigger but I ate half of it coming up stairs"! What a good laugh I just had . Thank you. ~Joanna♡
C’est si beau. La messe dans cette petite chapelle me fait pleurer, surtout avec tout ce qui ce passe dans le monde en ce moment. Vos histoires me font rêver pendant ces jours seul.
Such a wonderful moment, your first Mass in the Chapel officiated by a son of the family who built it!
Stephanie, I have just found your channel after seeing your beautiful chateau on Welcome To The Chateau DIY. Can I just say this fabulous way of life could not have happened to a nicer person. You are so full of light, fun and such a beautiful girl. I am now hooked and have been watching all the episodes in the evenings instead of Eastenders!! Please could you do a lot of vlogging around Halloween this year as I adore Halloween and bonfire night and can't wait to see what you all get up to! hope you feel better soon, honey, lemon and ginger tea x
You are so blessed to not only have your exquisite Chapel still intact, but to be able to have Mass celebrated there!!! With literally the family priest!!!
I was getting a bit choked up. You could feel God's spirit. There is a beautiful annointing present. Thanks for including us in this service.🙏
It was so lovely to see the mass performed by a member of theChateau family. I bet they have wonderful stories to tell of growing up in the Chateau, I’d love to hear what they remember, someone should write a book about growing up there, I’d buy one for sure. Sorry to hear you’re feeling poorly, rest, plenty of fluids( champagne is a good cure I hear) and let the others do all the work for a change. I’m craving creamy tomato soup now, with croutons make from some lovely crusty French bread. Seafood chowder is on tonight’s menu so have to go to the farmers market on Saturday to get some yummy heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil but I’ll have to cook it myself as I have no minimarie to cook it for me🤣😂🤣😂. Perhaps I’ll have it all made and ready to sup while watching Chateau Sunday. 🙋🏼🥰
Seafood chowder sounds amazing! Better than tomato soup! It was lovely hearing all of the stories of the children growing up here. He told me that every Sunday they also went to mass in the local village church - it was 4 kilometres away and the children would walk behind their grandmother (the Marquise!) in her donkey cart.
I'm catholic and my heart is full after I saw that short clip of the mass in the chapel. My eyes are teary and I ask the Lord to bless you Stephanie, so you can finish the renovations for many more masses to be celebrated there in His name ♥️
Wow this video it so Beautiful.Thank You so much. I will save this video.I am so happy to see people in the chapel. What nice place.
Gerald is such a lovely man and so kind get well soon stephaniex
Wow, such awesome food! I can't wait to my next visit!!!
it was bigger but I ate half.....brotherly love hahaha great episode Stephanie thank you best regards from the Charente
He’s a monster! No wonder I’m so weak 😉
The chapel service was very lovely. The Priest was truly sent of God. The chapel needs to be used as often as possible as this will keep this castle blessed forever! So perfect to have a chapel at your own home with family and guests. Keeping God in the center of it all! It really gave me chills to think about how it was possible to have a Priest who had lived in this castle and child of a family who resided there for 200 years! What an honor! Am so glad he could come back for this Mass. Am sure he was honored and thrilled to see how lovely this home will once again become!
Your grandmother looks like you and your Mummy. You know even your grandmother looked very "Regal!" This was all meant to be and the Lord has brought you to this place! Blessings to you Stephanie and all of your family and growing number everyday of the number of friends and your co-owners..
Percy to the rescue!!
Stephanie, setting the tables with the "bird plates" are so lovely. The bird plate, is a Herend porcelain from Hungary. I have that set, it is a beautiful china. When Princess Diana got married, she received a Herend Tea set from the Hungarian minister as a wedding gift. Your pattern called the "poor Victoria" because it has no gold edge around it... Love your channel... " a new fan" from New Jersey!
Get well soon Stephanie. Good to see everyone around. Hope Marie coming back soon.
The peacocks looks well.
Amazing. Looks like progress on the chapel has happened, conserving the walls with something shiny looking to cover it and the windows looking radiant. I can't wait until it's fully restored. It will be the showcase on the estate.
Beautiful service in the chapel. 🧡💚
What a lovely vlog. Hope you’re feeling better Stephenie.😀
I went to catholic school for 1st to 8th grade n this brought back alot of memories. I havent been to church in a little over 20 years.
Hello Sean. You would be welcomed back into the fold. May God Bless You and Guide You.
A very sweet video.💕💕💕 Thank you for sharing!
The chapel is gorgeous!! 😍 my gransmother was french and had cousins who were priests.
The banana cream cake looked delish and the thermalmix id never seen! Looks handy like a pressure cooker.
Your mum and percy are so sweet ❤
The thermomix didn't become super popular in Canada and I am so jealous you have one. They are the BEST!
very popular in Germany, I call one my own.
Seeing your grandmother reveals 3 generations of elegant women with lovely bones. You haven't strayed genetically.
I whip the milk to make it fluffy, put a half teaspoon brown sugar and your favorite whiskey stir then add the lightly whipped cream on top that's a southern girl's Irish coffee
Boil some water with crushed ginger N add a tiny cinnamon stick n one table spoon of honey N some tea leaves, it works very good for soar throats and have chicken stew with lots of herbs N butter, it'll keep you warm n boost your energy.. Lots of love Steph..
wow the chapel than and now🥰🥰🥰🥰😃😃😃
WOW BEAUTIFUL !!!
I love how the Chateau is filled with laughter ♡
That was beautiful! One of my dreams is to restore historic churches and bring back the Holy Spirit in them and restore people to a relationship with God who loves them so much!
What an amazing dream. I have a similar desire for the churches where I live. 😇
Slightly whip the cream for a perfect Irish coffee top! X
Aha! I knew we must have been missing a trick! Thanks!
Thank you for bringing smiles❤️
We Persian have a salad with diced tomatoes and diced cucumbers and chopped cilantros and diced onion any kind of onion you like , with fresh lemon juice and olive oil salt and pepper . You would use at list of 4 pound of tomatoes and cucumbers for just a one meal 👍couple of this salad you won’t have any more tomatoes 🍅 left in the garden .
You can freeze tomatoes all or chopped in plastic bags and use during winter for soups .
I’m so glad I discovered your vlog! If I ever need to run away from my family 😆 I told them they would be able to find me at your chateau as a volunteer! I truly enjoy the respect you give to the restoration and history of your chateau and Chapel
lovely times and sweet memories. thank you
Lovely mass and everything else too.
Oh these pears r my favourite they taste delicious with black pepper powder n black Salt n they're crunchy.. Yummm 🍐😍😍😍 that thermo mix is a life saver.. Mini Marie 🤣🤣
After being unable to attend Mass during the pandemic this was so great to god to-a French one right at the chateau ! Made me emotional too!
As a non-catholic who married into a very catholic aristocratic french family, the beginning of this video seemed very familiar. As in many such families, priests are often brothers, cousins, and nephews and are a familiar part of any family gatherings. Weddings, baptisms, or just a 'cousinade' are humble family affairs but fraught with history, tradition, and religion.
The three generations of women in your family all look so similar. You are all lovely. Your grandmother would likely be proud that the chapel is being used. It's wonderful when churches/chapels get used. It was moving to hear the hymns. Trusting in God and being obedient to His will has resulted in me being blessed greatly throughout my entire life and has given me peace . We certainly need it especially now.
Living The Good Life Yes!! The Lord is my Saviour, my Rock, My Father and my Shelther. Turn to Him you people and be saved from the penalty of sin forever. He is worthy to receive our praise, our thanksgiving forever!
If you want to see the church that my 98 year old mother's great grandparents donated the altar, crucifix, and window to in Praha, Texas, see St. Mary's Czech Catholic church, Praha, Texas. They came to Texas from Prague in the 1850s, when Indians, and Huguenots lived there. La Fayette started Fayette county. My Czech great great great grandfather was a French professor in Prague. My grandmother thought she was a French Bohemian. The Boiis were French Celts living outside Paris who retreated to Boiiemia, or Bohemia, when defeated by the Romans. Indians scalped some in Engle, Texas, a couple of miles away. One young wife walked with her 18 month old, to Columbus, Texas, to prevent being scalped. Her husband stayed behind on the land. The church was hand painted inside. I copied the chandelier for two smaller chandeliers for my daughters wedding.
This was beyond beautiful.
That is one nifty contraption you made the soup in. It also made banana bread with Mummie. How cool is that! ❤️
Those machines are very expensive, would love to have one but yikes!!
I think you have to lightly whip the cream first to get air in it and thicken it a bit before pouring it over the coffee.
this prayer - coming true :)
Love this vlog! Actually, I LOVE all the Chateau Diaries' vlog! 💕💕💕 Thank you🙏🏼
"I wish it were"...a rare subjunctive! What joy!
So sorry you are feeling under the weather--I hope you feel better soon! I hear that red wine helps! I so look forward to each of your vlogs--thank you for sharing your life at LaLande with us!

Your brother, Gerald is the sweetest, funniest person. Lol God bless him💕
wish to have it every SUNDAY!!! The chapel is mourvelous
I watched this one with my family. They loved the mass bit it was gorgeous. And we all collectively made a horrible attempt at Irish coffee.
I suggest whipping the cream a bit before pouring
Thank you Stephanie for your support and respect for the chape.l I do believe you should hold many services in the chapel and weddings.
How wonderful! What a beautiful and blessed day!
WoW, Stephanie your laughing was so loud in my earphones they almost flew off

Your such a lovely person Stephanie! How special to have a beautiful chapel in you backyard. The mass was so beautiful by the sweet priest. May the spirit of Lalande always fill your heart and soul with many blessings. I hope to visit soon for the B&B!
I’m new to your channel. I am so, so enjoying your chateau and all the stories. Since this is an older video, I do not know if you’ll see this. Your grandmother was a beautiful lady!

Tomato chutney sounds delicious 😋
I’m in the states and no one knows what a thermomix is. My friend in the U.K has told me that she will go in halves with me if I get one. I suffered septic shock 8 years ago and have had issues with energy and arthritis ever since. My husband and I love to cook and we have 2 teens (one of which is a 17 year old boy ) who are CONSTANTLY hungry . I just don’t have the energy to cook and hubby is always busy with work. I’m THIS close to getting one.
Stephanie I have just watched again your video, my favourite tea is French Earl Grey. Do you love this tea as much as I do? I am in Western Australia right down the south on the coast, so I have it posted. The brand of tea I most adore is Mirage? tea where you recently visited.
So nice to see Scotman back
Is the chapel still consecrated would be nice to ask them back when its restored
