    It looks so elegant. Honestly I dont know why you would go for anything else in the premium saloon segment than this. Offers outstanding value for money and sublime luxury. Such a big improvement on the previous one, which by the way was a fabulous car as well, especially in the looks department. A dream of a car.

    Hi Bob. Having owned/driven Skodas since 2003,Octavias until 2011,then Superb until now,i can agree 100% with your review of this latest mark 3 version. I will take delivery of a 2.0 litre combi in early Jan 2016,(it arrived in the dealers today) and having sat in it for a few minutes,it truly is a beautifully finished car. I also have to say that i enjoy your reviews of the various cars,and other events like the show in Portlaoise and your Dublin tourist guide. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

    Because of Bob I bought a superb back in 2012 and ever since I have felt that all other cars of this size that cost more are pointless. You can get a cheaper one but that is a point considering, but more expensive cars offer very little more but cost so much more that it is impossible to justify.

    I'm driving the caravan variant of it for two years now. It's just amazing, I really enjoy driving it. My first automatic gearbox car (after 750.000 km with manual gearbox cars). Effortless driving, great comfort with all the bells and whistles (L&K, 190 hp), massive space and it costed me new cca 12000 EUR less than used BMW 5 series caravan with less equipment and similar engine or used BMW 3GT with 184 hp diesel engine (and less equipment - and with less kilometers than the 5 series). Also very nice is the fact that you don't get so much attention as with driving some premium badge brands.
    Very nice sound system as well, I'm noticing that 99 % of my music listening is now going on in my car.

    Nice review Bob, I'm with you in that this car is underrated (or is it unknown, since there is little advertising from Skoda about the Superb) but it's on my list aside the Mazda 6, that one because of its gorgeous styling.
    This new Superb, I think there's no better ratio of what you pay for what you get on its segment, and now it's really appealing from the outside so that's a plus.

    Nice video as usual Bob! How does it compare to the Passat for overall refinement? Not sure if that was a 150 or 190 you drove but was engine noise intrusive? I drive a Superb L&K so appreciate the huge spec and would obviously be tempted next time but prices on the new model have crept up a lot especially at the higher end of range!

    What an excellent and entertaining review. You didn't comment whether there would still be enough room in the boot for the bloodstained axe. As has been mentioned before, you can get the rear wiper as a no cost option (at least here in the UK), but it messes with the sharp lines. Better no cost option is to get the wife to wipe the rear screen.

Ive seen your Series 1 video but you seem to rate Skodas quite high so id like to read your opinion. I know the BMW would be much faster and nicer inside but the Skoda would be newer and have lower mileage and a few wee bits like the glass roof and touchscreen radio. which would you have for the next few years?? cheers!

      +Stephen Murray There isn't a saloon car that will comfortably take three child seats. You'd have to get the Galaxy, S-Max, Caddy Life or Alhambra for that job. It's a pain but the centre seat in a saloon is where the arm rest hangs out.

      +Jim Starling Noooooo! Great engine in a smaller car but the Superb is about half a tonne heavier! My Leon has the 1.4 and its great but you need the 2.0l diesel not the 1.6 either (I test drove the 1.6 in the Business SE and it felt under powered in this car)

      Yeah, I've driven the A3 with the 1.6 tdi and the 1.4 petrol and whilst the 1.6 diesel felt like a milk float the 1.4 felt really quick. I just wonder how it will translate in a big motor as I know the local dealer will only have 2.0 D's to test drive.

    i'm in the process of buying a 2016 estate 2.0 tdi 150, my only concern is the timing belt replacement interval,, there are conflicting reports on both time and mileage im seeing 4 years then 5 years and anywhere from 160 kms to 210 kms. there is nothing in the online manuals even,, i rang 2 skoda dealers and both have said different times also, the only solution i can think of is have it done when i get it for absolute peace of mind, aside from that annoyance it's an absolutely brilliant car, im after looking everywhere online to try find fault with it and have to say i can't,, there are all 4.5 - 5 star rated reports, i just hope my real life experience will be that of 5 stars too, all the higher end badge snobs don't know what they are missing if you ask me, but each to their own as they say.

    To be honest, I prefer the car without the rear wiper. For its 4-door saloon style shape (even though it's a 5-door liftback in disguise), the wiper would just look awkward and out of place. Luckily it's only a free optional extra so I don't have to go for it.

    I've been thinking of this video since it was posted. I even mentioned it to my Mum, who will eventually need to replace her 2003 C-class. She didn't seem that impressed.
    I've come to the conclusion that the Superb is the best car for non-car people, but only car people seem to realise that. As a result almost nobody ends up buying it.

    • @JamesAlexanderFoxhal
      @JamesAlexanderFoxhal Před 8 lety

      +David Ellis "the Superb is the best car for non-car people, but only car people seem to realise that." Perfectly put!

    • @codbudgie
      @codbudgie Před 8 lety +1

      +David Ellis Actually I am very much what so a car person, and i would chose Skoda over any other German car for one massive reason. its the same build, same technology, same design, but vastly cheaper.
      Do you mean when you say car person, a person that looks at the badge only. or do you mean an intelligent, thinking person who studies and considers before making a purchase. as Bob says in the video the superb is the thinking mans car, I totally agree with that.
      I have been looking at the Mustang, Mercedes C class, BMW 3 series, Jaguar XE and XF, Audi A4 the latest model, Audi RS3, Ford Mondeo, Kia sportage, Sangyong verious models, Mazda, Citroen, Vauxhall, Land rover.
      And do you know what my conclusion is, the only car manufacturer on the market that offers everything a person could want (outside of a flashy badge) at good value is Skoda, especially with the new superb. With all other cars i find things wrong with them very easily, too expensive for what they are, terrible options for what you pay, simply too costly, not roomy or comfortable enough, terrible design, horrible dark interior, horrible boot space, horrible seating position, low roof, and with BMW, Mercedes, Audi complete lack of options at an expensive price. etc.. etc....
      Take a Skoda apart and you see Audi stickers, Seat branding, and VW parts, perform a direct comparison and many of the parts are the same, do really, does a "car person" only buy a badge?
      I didn't chose Skoda previously to having owned a Fabia, but once i have owned a Skoda i find it very difficult to justify a different manufacturer especially when considering value for money, The sales people at Skoda are better than other garages also, other garages try to bully you into buying what they want you to even after telling the sales person in no uncertain terms multiple times that you will not buy the deal they are trying to push down your throat and that to get the sale they need to match what you want, no negotiation, you do as you are told, Skoda lets you make your mind up (similar to Audi garage).
      Yes this is from my experience, but surely the experience of a Skoda owner for 5 years (had vauxhall before that), my father has chosen Skoda for 20 years now. means they are doing something right.
      So would you consider me as "not a car person" because i chose Skoda?
      PS. I have also looked at Subaru, Suzuki. Subaru WRX STI, very nice car, but not practical enough for daily use. and a tad cramped inside.
      What does it take to make a "car person" do i need to buy with only consideration of badge?

    • @davidellis4031
      @davidellis4031 Před 8 lety

      +steve johnston Hi Steve, I'm honoured for anyone to write such a long response to one of my comments.
      Of course, the definition of what a 'car person' is will differ greatly, but for me it's someone who genuinely loves driving, likes cars and wants to know more about them. They like finding the perfect car for them, and enjoy having something a bit special - even if that is a Yugo. You clearly fit that definition for me, as you have shown that you have carefully considered what you want and what you like, and haven't just gone for a boring, underpowered and barren german car just to have a flashy brand key to wave around at work.
      Skoda is actually one of the brands that has gotten away from me so far - along with Mazda. I'm certain that somewhere in a parallel universe I'm driving a Fabia VRS and loving it. I'm well aware of the VAG connection but still they have gone in under 25 years from being almost as bad as Lada, to an excellent brand that takes all the useful bits from VW and Audi and translates that into fun cars that work well and make sense.
      All I meant about the Superb being the car guy choice for non-car people is that it's a perfect combination of everything, and will serve somebody really well. But IMHO if you are a car person and wants to enjoy driving and sometimes haul loads of stuff, you respect what you could have had (the Superb) and then go back to your MX-5 and old Transit van.

      +David Ellis I had a fabia vrs. u got the twin charger? i found the ride too harsh and the seating position not particularly comfortable. liked the power of the engine. but found it to be a right oil burner when thrashed somewhat. tbh my choice of cars these days is comfortable and practical. not particularly hauling lots of stuff but a boot big enough to take all my bits for my hobby. folding tables etc...... although I can never get away from the desirability of a powerful engine. Ideally a roller raith. but alas unless I win the lottery that's never going to happen.

    Tis a very nice car, I am so tempted to buy one, but which one the 280, oh yes I like the idea of the power, but economy will be shocking. the Diesel, well I'm driving the Octavia 2ltr TDI 150 (the new model) and I don't think i do the range and the engine just isn't refined enough for me, its a bit noisy and a tad lacking power at the very low end of the whole getup and go. So I like the sound of the 1.4TSI ACT, very much what so, price for a car this size is quite impressive.
    Have we all started working for Skoda here, i get the feeling including Bob we are all selling this car to one another, the Sales man did try to talk me into a test drive when i popped to the garage to discuss a service agreement on my car. Sooooooooooo tempted, but not so sure i want a car that is an extra 20cm longer than the octavia. octavia is big enough for me. but everything else in the superb is top notch.
    oh on another note, i believe you can add a rear wash wipe as a no cost option at purchase if you're going to get a factory fresh car.

    I've just bought that car two week ago. I agree it has good appearance. But I can't say I'm impressed with it. Two things I don't like about it: its automatic gear switching which is too dumb and slow. The lacquer also is very soft and any touch leaving scratches.

    Personally, I found it a bit of a snorefest when compared with the Mondeo or the Mazda 6. Then there's the VAG emissions scandal,and the full implications of that (and total financial fallout) still aren't really known.

    • @vrs2011man
      @vrs2011man Před 8 lety

      +Andrew Sowerby Well it has waltzed all over them in group tests. It's a hell of a car, massive jump over the last Superb, and certainly a gamechanger in the segment.

    • @AndrewSowerby
      @AndrewSowerby Před 8 lety

      +vrs2011man owners should keep in mind what a game changer it is while they check their VIN on the Skoda recalls site to see if their engine is already listed as affected. There are several 2016 models with affected engines, and even petrol engines are failing tests. This is for CO2 and MPG as well as NOx.
      I wouldn't be singing its praises too much until the full extent is known and all the fallout has been dealt with.
      As for group tests, I've seen many that have gone the other way. However, given that the whole car jounalism industry may be biased by the amount of sponsorship received from the car industry, I prefer to make best efforts to decide for myself which is the best car for me, and my entirely subjective opinion is that the Superb, while improved over the previous gen, is still less engaging to drive than the Mazda 6 or Mondeo, at least, in the conditions I tried them in (and based on different specs).
      That said, I would probably choose the Superb over a Passat or A6, just as I'd have an Octavia over a Golf or A4 - I'd just wait a while, at least until March, to see what happens. If resale values are affected, you might be able to pick up a bargain in 2017 or 2018.

    • @vrs2011man
      @vrs2011man Před 8 lety +1

      I honestly think the general public have blown this emissions saga out of proportion, and most of those making a todo about it are just compensation chasers. No-one buys a car based on emissions! And it was only the NoX they cheated on, something that is irrelevant in the UK. For a very very good revies of 'dieselgate' , watch Volkswagen Passat review with emission scandal by Bob Flavin, he tells it exactly like it is.

    • @AndrewSowerby
      @AndrewSowerby Před 8 lety

      +vrs2011man no, it was also CO2 on certain petrol engines, you should probably have a read of all the publicly available material before coming to any conclusions. That CO2 issue will be addressed after the diesel engine problem, and they suggested they would compensate anyone who goes up a tax band as a result. However, in the last 2 days VAG came out and said they won't be compensating anyone. Have a read on the BBC, autotrader, carbuyer or other sites :

    Very nice test and I love the color on this car. But please dont let the viewers be misunderstood. The history of Škoda auto is much more than the communist crap cars. It is one of the oldest car makers in the world and there were many generations of the workers and engineers who were doing their best when developing and making the Škoda cars. Sadly it was nearly destroyed by communists during 40 years of their ruling. Just saying :)

    So typical discussions around Skoda Superb. Are Audi A6 or Merc E class etc a better cars? Yes they are. Are they delivering extra value which is worth paying almost twice more money? Simply NO. If you haven't stucked your mind in nineties. This is a smart man's luxury car, with enough confidence not to follow the mass spending huge money for audis etc to show off. Which just shows how desperate they are. Is better to be follower or early adopter?
