This is the new Skoda Octavia! Now we know that the Czech manufacturer may not be held in such high regard as its German rivals, and they’re not exactly known for being the most exciting cars. But when you consider just how much car you get for a relatively low price, along with a huge choice of engines and trims to choose from so you can spec the car just to your liking, is it time the Octavia hatchback and estate are considered alongside the class leaders? Stick with Mat and find out in his latest in-depth review!

@@ranga8038 I’m glad I’m not the only young person who genuinely thinks a newer Skoda would be a good next car, I absolutely love the Scala. It’s just a rebadged cheaper Audi A3, scrolling LED indicators, digital dashboard, brilliant infotainment system, well made interior, it seems like a perfect car but people would turn their noses up / laugh at someone else with one because it’s a ‘Skoda’😂 I don’t know why they can’t shake off ‘that’ reputation when they’re making such clever and well engineered cars 😂

And I must say, I was blown away by how much better the Skoda performed. The handling on the frozen and snowy roads was on point, the engine had no struggles at all in the -30C weather and the ride was super comfortable. The Golf wasn’t bad in any way, but the Skoda was so much more spacious, the drive train felt a lot better and the interior felt more comfy.

I think it is clear, that he knows this is probably one of the most practical cars you can buy (for the price or otherwise), but he simply doesn't like it for some reason. It may be styling (though from other reviews I heard quite a lot of positive comments in this regard), it may be brand - Skoda is not the most exciting brand or it may be something else.

    • @tomraymond9795
      @tomraymond9795 Před 3 lety +23

@@petrkubena He likes to ''hoon'' around doesn't he so perhaps the lack of fun is a deal breaker for him.
I've driven the latest Focus and it is enjoyable to chuck about tbf but the build quality is a bit ropey. On both Ford hire cars I've had (at around 2 yrs old, a focus and a fiests), both had all broken window switches on the drivers door.
Then you have the Civic which is awesome but looks far too rowdy for most.
Corolla? pricey to buy due to hybrid system and not as roomy in the cabin.
You have 1 series and latest A class which are supposed to fun but it's too much to pay for a mid-size hatch.
Golf? just as dull. A3, too dear, not much more dynamic.
Leon? Not much better and less reliable (somehow even with same components)
Ceed and I30 are just OK unless you go for an I30N, which most people won't due to tax and fuel cost.
So... Octavia it is then! Or perhaps a Scala... 1.5 tsi SEL manual can be had for under 20K with a bit of haggling (or a broker discount, anyone know a good car broker!?).

He's right about reflective materials being distracting. I had the pre facelift version and the facelift introduced piano black material which reflect sun and street lamps.
All that said, I've had two in a row because it offers value, space, economy and quality. The 1.5 has cylinder deactivation which gives me 10% better fuel consumption than the previous 1.4.

The thing with the key for keyless entry is that when your cars battery goes to zero so you cant unlock it with buttons you can sort of pop the thing that you touch for unlocking (if you have keyless entry) the car and there should be classic physical lock you can use the key for. I haven´t really seen it live but I´ve heard about it a lot

I've had the previous Octavia, the best part about it, is that it's such an underestimated car and brand. Amoung my coworkers, the VW Polo and Golf was the most popular, so Skoda is often looked down upon as "the budget brand". So getting in the car, most people found out that it's actually very similar to the Golf in quality, it has all the options that the other cars had (like a panoramic sunroof) and it was a very comfy car for passengers, especially compared to cars like the A3 and CLA, which look cool, but are horrible for passengers.

My only saving grace was I bought it end of Feb 2021 for an amazing price of £21,500. Part exchanged it at end of Feb this year, with 20,000 miles on it for a new Karoq and only lost £500 from new!!! Incidentally, the Karoq has not missed a beat and already has 5,500!miles on it. The Octavia had been in garage 3 times at this age. Having had one for 7 months I can confirm the infotainment system is so glitchy, I've decided to sell the car. Skoda dealer having to seek Skoda UK permission to replace the screen. 4th visit to the dealership to get a screen related problem fixed! So frustrating, as we like everything else about the car. But when everything is controlled by the touch screen and the touch screen doesn't respond to a touch, one has a big problem!

I think maybe we've had a Friday car, but I don't think we could trust it beyond the manufacturer's warranty, in case we continue to have things go wrong. Just make sure you give the screen a good once over before buying, and go over some bumpy roads. In terms of practicality, comfort and economy the car is great - we have the 150 bhp manual, SEL.

Infact, I wasn't even expecting such features on a car that belongs to this price range. Furthermore, even though a car needs to be exciting but with this one it seems that Skoda focused on practicality. If I had the budget, I would definitely buy it.
