    Air layering and approach grafting an "Arakawa" Jpanese maple in the begining of June. This tree has been featured before in the channel, 2 years ago. Back then it was in the ground, now in a training pot. Thank you for your time!

    My dude approaching bonsai like lego, airlayering the top and then splitting the block in half and approach graft it to the parent tree. Some high level horticulture in practice.
    Your drone shots are sweet 10/10

    Hi beautiful video. I have a young arakawa maple for a few months and it has literally exploded. He made branches of one and a half meters. It's incredible, it also has a good bark for being small. This copy of yours will inspire me

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! It is there to keep some pressure and keep the branch fully in. But it protects it from being damaged from the pins, as you said! Cheers!

      @@ArkefthosBonsai i use grafting tape instead of pins but i might try some wire with it next time. thanks again!

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  Před rokem

      The problem with grafting tape, parafilm, is that there is a good chance it will break down before the graft has fused. Normal grafts are faster, approach grafts can be much slower. I'm guessing this will take more than a year to fuse. Parafilm won't last and keep the pressure for that long. Another grafting tape might though. Cheers!

      @@ArkefthosBonsai yes I've found that too, I mitigate it by using a zip-tie as failsafe... working well so far... I just find the pins really awkward and can't get proper grafting pins here for some reason lol.

    Nice tree and lot of work on it at one's you could start earlier in season but you have time to finished no problem. It will be good tree out of it. And you can make from the lowest stump that left from air layer nice small fat tree too.

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  Před rokem

      Thabk you mate! Here spring is one month late. I still have landscape trees that just now are starting to push. I waited to get better hormone balance and get better roots. The stump, I don't think it will bud out. Let's see...

    When is it too late to airlayer in the season. Or does it matter in your experience?

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  Před rokem

      Excellent question! Last year I did 3 air layers on a plain Japanese maple the first week of August. I was able to separate all of them the first week of November. They are fine now, though not healthy enough to work on them. I chose not to put them in the greenhouse for the winter. Had I placed them in the greenhouse, they would be great now. So, if you have way to protect them from freezing, the first week of August should be your limit. If not, the sooner the better. And your season of air layering should start as soon as you stop seeing fresh small leaves on the tips of the branches. Cheers!
