In Port of Spain's markets, ingredients from Europe, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent come together on vendor tables. Culantro here is known as shadow benny or chadon benni -- a corruption of the French chardon benit or "blessed thistle." It is a part of the green seasoning that is a Trinidad and Tobago culinary basic. Chef Debra Sardinha-Metivier of DSM Creative Cuisine, gives us our first look at the diversity of the Trinidadian market basket.
Trini Girl Here!!! Love my people, love my Island!!
I'm such a patriot. So proud! Arguably one of the most diverse culinary cultures in the world. RIP Anthony Bordain. I'm especially proud of the presenters' diction, detail and accuracy.
Yes. Great video, but the gentleman was not Anthony Bourdain.
i AM AMAZED HOW ORGANIZED,CLEAN AND NO FLIES AROUND as in other markets.
That way
I thinking
No flies
Pesticides
We do not use pesticides. We keep our markets clean and sun is very hot.
Markets are kept very clean in Trinidad. I have been to one or two other places in the Caribbean and South America where it is not the same.
i want to tell you something, i a middle clas man please help me, i am pakistani, things are very bad here it has become very difficult to run a house, would you please help me.
How many Caribbean people in the diaspora really know how to prepare the items on display...the way our ancestors did? I hope the Chefs will show the next generation (on CZcams) how to prepare tasty and staple Trini foods using these items.
There are lots of videos on CZcams now. It is up to them to learn them.

and yuh see dat bottle seasoning yuh holding there sir, is DE best seasoning I believe mankind could ever come across! it's a crying shame our cuisine is not more widely recognize. But yuh know what! it may be for a good, because such flavorful green seasonings is so unique to Trinidad and Tobago that it keeps our food pure and unblemished. I love my Trini food.

Sweetened tea made with ginger root is the best!!! Greetings from the Bahamas
You can tell that market smells amazing with all the spices and foods there
U are so patriotic that u preserved our indian culture.. luv u
Both the women chief from the beginning and the man chief at the end spoke very interlectual and educated. They both gave exceptional explanations on the different market ingredients and indigenous cuisine..

Loved this. Thank you. I was recently in Trinidad and wanted to go so badly to the market. Thanks for the green sauce recipe. I ate the best curried duck and dhal in Trinidad. Omg. I could never match it.

Wow - Nice , I Wish I could travel there one Day
Awesome Khaliad, well done. I can say you sure know your stuff!

Love this video
To people who ask if Chardon Beni shadon Beni or shadow beni( known also as bhandhania or culantro) now come into existence , the answer is NO, it been there for decades, growing wild in the back of people yard,
For people living outside Trinidad, shadon Beni can be brought at any international supermarket under the name CULANTRO not cilantro.
It makes great blended green seasoning along with other green herbs and it also makes fish dish taste great
I love tt and the food its good.use to travel there often , love the market , nice ppl

If you ever do visit Trinidad and Tobago it is best to go around Carnival Season/time, you would get to know a lot more of the culture and the people there especially the food and music. A lot of tourists travel there at that time.
Trini food is the best. Everyone who comes to Trinidad loves our food. Even our kfc tastes better than kfc in other countries.

Nice,clean and organized market!
All the videos of markets in Trinidad that you will see on CZcams are clean. The markets are kept clean and not dirty like one of those I visited in the another Caribbean island.
😣 I wish I was in that market right NOW 😋😍
OMG How she pronounces every Veggie with their Indian name specifically Bihari Name...😳😳❤❤🙏🙏
Because she is belongs to our Indian diaspora.
Yeah imagine that next thing you'll see a British woman has a British accent
Read the history you will surprised. Because they belong to India. They also have some Bhojpuri songs but they don't understand it. 😅
They do not "belong" to India, they ancestors are from India after slavery many years ago
Why would she not? Do other countries not do that?
I know that market cannot wait to go back.
Very nice
Eventually, we will begin to find more and more of carrebeans and Island fruits and vegetables supermarkets in South and Central florida because they are close geographically to serve the ones who enjoy international food markets.

That's because the indentured servants in Trinidad and other parts of the Caribbean came from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh

Lived in Port of Spain (PIARCO) for 15 months Was consulting for Caribbean airlines - Was excellent experience. I love to cook and was a regular at the market. The only thing I could not find was Coriander!!
Inatsikap where we live , is hard to find fresh coriander, burnin the spice section in any surpermarket here its there cheers from NJ
There is a shop on Broadway in POS where you'll find all different kinds of spices. Chinese shop on Charlotte St good too!
What`s wrong with the presenter? Apparently the "reporter" can't look his interviewees in the eye. He looks at the floor or the food and he doesn't seem very enthusiastic. Bad casting.
He dont belong therein is out of his boundaries typically behavior of white folks,
Myself from spices business family and FOODIE BY HEART having travel 14 countries I can say you got best of truly vast range in fruits vegetables and spices too. Lucky wish I was there to enjoy or cook something my Indian style gujju vegetarian or even Rajasthani food trust me I would love o have taste of yourside cusine
come on down
Plenty of cowcola from Rajasthani cows also for you
The ignorance of The Culinary Institute of American is speaking. I would like to know what ingredients from Europe is he talking about. Habaneros are from Yucatan in Mexico and of course the Tomatoes are from Mexico. Trinida has its native ingredients too and should be given credit to.

The man said that the salted codfish is a portuguese influence. Portugal is in Europe.

When COVID is over and I visit, I plan to venture out to the markets in central and southern Trinidad for a different experience from the typical supermarkets. I would also like to bring back some condiments, a good iron pot and some mamey sepote if they are in season. Nothing is better than Trinidad's fruits which are so much better than apples, pears, grapes, etc.
