I just heard from Hoka, they are delayed to March 25 for now in the US.
Snazzy review. Great B-roll, thoughtful commentary. Nice work Steven!
Thanks a lot, Dan!
Love your thorough reviews! I'll be grabbing these NEXT year when they go on sale! 😆
Thanks, Kelly! Yep; grab them when they are on sale.
That Mount LeConte video was possibly my favorite video you’ve ever done 🙂 (aside from hunting the tofurkey) looks like an awesome trail shoe that’s gotten a LOT of use thus far.
Awesome, Celine; thanks! HA you know you are a real OG when you remember the Tofurkey video.
I am glad you mentioned the toe box... The speedgoat 4's felt similar when i put them on. But, for ultra distances, I do typically go with an 11 2E, just to give a touch more space without slipping. Great review!
Thank you! Yea the toe box does stretch a bit.
I just confirmed with Hoka.. they will NOT be doing pre-orders with the Speedgoat 5.
Thanks for that insight!
Did they confirm the launchdate? Or will it slip?
@@bikeinmotion still 3/15 as of now
Nice review - the 4s last about 300 miles before splitting so glad to see they addressed that. The cushioning is plush and your right stack height is something to get used to. I race and train in them. My go to shoes 👍👍
I hope these will last longer than the 4’s. Thanks, Adam!
Great video and hoping to get my hands on a pair before my races this year. 👍🏼
Thank you, Tyler!
Great review Steven! Appreciate you mentioning the wide sizing. I’ve been really happy with Speedgoat 4. If only I had that 20% extra traction with Speedgoat 5 maybe I could have handled the BFC mudslides better in 2021!!! Lol!
HAHA Hoka could dub those "traction lugs" the "BFC lugs"
Great review as always 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Great review! I had high hopes for the SG5, but the short tongue and lace issue that you mentioned forced me to send them back. Sad day! We’ll see about future iterations.
Thanks! Yeah the SG6 could be the one!
Nice review Steven! Found you looking for reviews on the SG5 and subscribed.
I don't really have a wide foot, but went to a wide size in the SG4 for more room in the toe box. It just had no accommodation, when compared to the Evo SG that I wore until they were discontinued. The Evo also felt narrow but the flexible section, between the laces and toes, allowed it to work pretty well for me over distance. I would've probably went wide in those also, if it was an option.... so i'm leaning towards wide in these. My only concern is that the upper seems even more pliable than the Evo, which had the kevlar threads to keep things snug without having to crank the laces down.
Thanks, Tac Doc! Yeah the upper of the SG5 is more pliable, and the vamp (flexible section between laces and toe box) does provide some stretch too
I love the hair dryer test to check for breathability. Great point! Will be interesting to see how the shoe breathes in summer. I wonder too how quickly it will dry when wet
The upper will probably dry decently. It’s thin and doesn’t feel like it will hold water too much. Thanks!
SOLD!!! I can't wait to get myself a pair! Great review Steven! 😎🤘🏻
Awesome; thanks, Ben!
can't wait to get these! new subscriber
Awesome; thanks!
That run in the Smokeys was impressive... if the Speedgoat handled that I am confident it could handle anything. Glad to hear the weight dropped from the previous model. Do you think the lack of overlays in the front could lead to less durability? The tongue issue really seems like a big miss on Hoka's part, hope they address it in the next version. Sad too hear the price went up but it sounds like its worth it.
There is still a toe bumper on the front, and the dual layered jacquard mesh seems to be pretty durable. Obviously a sharp stick may poke it, but overall, I think it will hold up fine. I agree; the tongue was a major issue on the SG4. Hoka missed it big on that. Well with all the price increases for materials, the shoe going up 10 bucks is understandable. Thanks, Sage!
Thanks Steven - another great review! Do you think these are better for a 100 mile race than the Challenger ATR? I saw your review of them and was very impressed by what you said there too.
Depends on the terrain and conditions. If it’s muddy, the SG5 would be better. If it’s crushed gravel or easy trail the ATR’s would be good. Personally I feel more stable in the ATRs
Hi Steven…great review as always…tell me what you between SG5 and salomon pulsar trail…tnx
Salomon Pulsar Trail for me.
Nice video love ur content 👍
Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed review. Still on the fence, I have simi wide feet. I have not been able to do any of the SG's in the past, maybe I will try it in a wide, because it does look nice.
See if a local running store has them in stock and try them on. Hope they work out. Thanks, Dustin!
Hoka sadly don’t make a proper wide fit
Love it 😃👍 good review… sign me up now 😂
Thank you!
Like the look of this, will have to wait for the wide option … loved the SG4 in wide. Do you know when the wide is out (I know you said the sg5 is wide but just the wide option would be better)
N I C E R E V I E W
Thanks, James! I haven’t heard if the wide will be released the same time or not. Hopefully it will.
Hi great review thanks. I love the SG4 but like you I find them a bit unstable, what would you recommend that is similar but more stable? Thank you
The Saucony Xodus is a maximally cushioned shoe that is more stable, but it is heavier. However, the Xodus Ultra is out now and is lighter weight. The Salomon Ultra Glide is great too, but the midsole won’t last long.
@@UltraTrailSteven Great thanks will take a look :)
Just got a pair, will try them out tomorrow. However, nobody seems to mention Hoka went el-cheapo with the insole for them. No more Ortholite insole for SG5.
Hope you like them!
Unless I'm mistaken, according to hoka's website the speedgoat 5 isn't a 'maximal' cushioned shoe. It's classified as a 'balanced' eva sole (middle of the road btwn' responsive' - thicker and 'plush' - thinner).
In most peoples opinion, the Goat has always been a maximal shoe by stack height and cushion. Feels quite plush underfoot.
How does it compare to the Ultra Glide? Would be interested in hearing your opinion on that. Great review! Big fan of your videos! :)
That's a great question, and I will be doing a comparison video in the future. Both have excellent grip, but I did feel more stable in the Ultra Glide. Both midsoles are nice, but the Speedgoat 5 feels a bit more comfortable and will definitely last longer than the Ultra Glide.
@@UltraTrailSteven which would you recommend for stability? I have very shitty ankles and i bend them all the time. I need a stability shoe that’s also cushioned.
@@SergiuSalcau00 I would recommend the Ultra Glide. It feels more stable to me
You’ve piqued my interest! I’ve just grabbed a few SG4, but SG5 will be on my radar.
Yeah Dan the SG5 is nice. The upper and midsole are definitely worth the upgrade if you like the goats.
Hi, does the upper stretch so much that you can’t get a good lock down after many miles in them or doesn’t it stretch after say 50k? Thanks, and hope all is well
Yes, the upper does stretch a bit, but so far, not so much so that I cannot retie and get a good lockdown. I hope that helps!
Personally I hate cushioned tongues on my shoes..
Evos is perfect feel to me.
I really like the flat /thin tongues, like the older version stinson and the Evo speed goats (my fav EVER shoe, and I've owned Alot of Hokas)
Well that’s way there are so many different types of shoes. So everyone can find one they like!
I noticed LL Bean has them available for preorder but with a June 22 ship date for the mens 😳. Any insight on when preorders through Hoka or anyone else might start?
Just confirmed with Hoka... They are NOT doing pre-orders with the SG5.
I have the 4 and there still in great shape is is it worth upgrading to the 5 or should I hold off till the 4 is dead
The upper and midsole are definitely worth the upgrade if you like the goats. But if you have miles left in the SG4, no need to rush out and buy a pair day one
Bonjour j’ai une question , c’est quoi la meilleure ?
- XODUS ULTA ?
ou
- la HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5 ?
ou
- la NIKE PEGASUS Trail.2 ?
Merci de vos réponses ❤☺️
Hmm.. Either the Xodus Ultra or Speedgoat 5. But I would choose the Mafate Speed 4 over all.
Got mine last week (maybe Canadian release was a bit earlier?). I also have the Rincon 2 and 3 - this is much closer to those than I would have expected. Great review. Thanks!
Thanks, Chad. Hope you like them!
@@UltraTrailSteven I’ve got ~110 miles in them now. I kept having trouble with the gusset rubbing after 10-12 miles. Yesterday was my first run after cutting the gussets out. Seriously. I didn’t miss them, in fact the rub on the medial arch completely disappeared and 15mi felt fantastic. The tongue is wide enough and with the 2 laces pass-through the gusset didn’t seem necessary. 🤷🏻♂️
@@chad.haggerty interesting! Glad you fixed the issue!
Another prominent reviewer said the upper (over some use) begins to stretch and become looser fit (making it tougher to lock in a good fit) and not go back to original. Did you notice this in your review as well? Seems like the Evo had the better upper due to this issue and had superior breath ability I’m guessing too. Lastly, seems like today (15th) is when these were to be released but not seeing it).
Yeah as you run the shoe loosens up and may need retied. I’ve emailed Hoka today for confirmation, as I too don’t see them for sale yet.
@@UltraTrailSteven so even less stable than SG3/4 due to upper, right ? Basically unstable because of higher stack AND bin precise upper, if I understand the stretching part right. In the end more intended for longest cruising with slighter technical parts I guess...good review, you bring it to the point without a useless point system like some other reviewers...
@@Thefifaplayeryant probably about the same as the SG3/SG4; but you’re right. The high stack and overall design of the shoe makes it unstable to me. Thank you! I too think a point system is arbitrary as it’s all subjective. I will just tell my honest thoughts.
So this is strange… I ordered two pairs of SG5, different colors. The green pair weighed in at 11.3oz while the blue pair was 12.0oz, both size 12, what gives?
That’s really odd!
Hi there! I'm new to your channel, how can you rate its grip/traction for muddy uphill and espcially downhill muddy over-stepped/used trails (shiny and flattened consistency) as I live in Asia-Pacific and we only have rainy or sunny weather. I am torn with SG5 and Salomon Speedcross5, I'm size 9.5 with wide foot structure.
Hi Jay, thanks! The grip of the SG5 is great; definitely one of their strong points! They should be fine on those types of trails. I don’t have experience with the Speedcross5.
@@UltraTrailSteven Thank you so much, Steven. The SG5 will be available in my country few days from now. Will get one as an alternate with my Torrent 2 that has over 500+km mileage. I've subbed and followed your chanel. Great work. Keep it up.
@@jaymanrick thanks so much!
How do compare there to the Salomon ultra Glide?
I discussed it a bit, but very similar. The Ultra Glide feels more stable though.
big step from SG3 ? I'm on my second pair and still feel the tight toebox, shoes are also too much for most runs, a bit too soft for my liking...but for everything long and longer, there's not much competition in weight/cushion/grip...
Yeah I would say they are definitely better than the SG3. The upper is much better, and the midsole had a bit more pop to it.
@@UltraTrailSteven Thx, sounds promising...the package is quite unchallenged I think, in the end every shoe has minor flaws, greetings from Germany
I need some advice. I need a trail shoe that has cushioning but also support so i don t kill my ankles. Suggestions?
I would personally not choose the Speedgoat then. For me and my ankles, they don’t feel stable. Maybe the Ultra Glide, or Hoka Challenger?
@@UltraTrailSteven i suppose you have much more experience with shoes. The problem i have is i ve only used the sense ride 2(but it was an awful experience) as a trail runner but the most support i ve had in salomon shoes is in the x ultra 3 which is a hiking shoe that i ve used for dozens of peaks, even running in it. However i was thinking about Hoka for the cushioning but yeah, i really need the stability and protection of a hiking shoe :)))))))). I know, gotta pick one over the other. Trail runners don t really have support, hiking shoes don t have cushioning and speed. Ffs 🙂.
@@SergiuSalcau00 well both the Salomon Ultra Glide and Hoka Challenger are neutral shoes. Both feel more stable than the goats IMO. If you need a stability shoe, maybe the Stinson ATR
@@SergiuSalcau00 Brooks Cascadia 16 ? La Sportiva Akasha ? Inov 8 Trailfly G300 ?
What about the midsole premature breakdown of the ultra glide????
The tongue issue seems similar to the Altra Mont Blanc
Yeah it is. As it is with many of the newer shoes unfortunately
@@UltraTrailSteven I fear that tongue will be "the" flaw that will give me blisters :(
@@bikeinmotion Yeah for a long runs I would definitely recommend either lubricating the top of the foot, or applying some KT tape
Agreed. The MB tongue is woefully short. The SG5 looks slightly longer, but not much.
@@UltraTrailSteven I just wonder if it was worth it those 2 grams. I mean the EVO speedgoat tongue is thin too and worked perfect for me over 14+ hours.... Well we'll see :)
