To summarize: Cruz understands the difference between right and wrong. He just chooses to do wrong and plans to escape accountability.
Look at how much he manipulated his adoptive mother. And unfortunately she always gave in because she was scared of him. This doctor was amazing in reporting CRUZ'S mentality. He was just a greedy little manipulative ass.
To summarize: nobody got this kid help for his serious psychological struggles.

I don't doubt that he has some mental health issues but I also believe that he knew right from wrong and because of his mental problems he chose to take a weapon and kill innocent people. There was a series of actions that he took to take out his anger on people who couldn't defend themselves.

This trial is only teaching him how to be a better liar. He has taken these tests his entire life since a child and he’s hung out with psych doctors for as long as he can remember. What good has it done him if he isn’t going to try to recognize his behaviors? He’s always chosen violence and destruction of property and life. He’s never going to change he chose to do everything he has done since he can remember it’s all been recorded. He is a fake and a fraud and hasn’t shown any kind of kindness or respect for anyone. is his mental health in question at all? I don't understand this. He clearly suffered severe trauma as a child on top of whatever else might or might not have existed naturally. Are they just saying he faked additional symptoms after his arrest? I just can't believe anyone would buy that this kid wasn't seriously disturbed from early on.

He's trying to manipulate everyone just by his behavior. Big dorky glasses, needy attire(not professional in a courtroom). Clean shaven face and goofy haircut to mimic a young, confused boy when he's 24 years old. Coloring in the court room to appear aloof and unaware. It's all a show.

as a forensic psychologist, this man gave some of the best definitions & examples of cluster b personality disorders. i felt like i was back in my University lectures all over again.. i was so tuned in!
Also with the ‘faking symptoms’ - I watched the interrogation as soon as it was posted after the crime… i watched the whole 3 hours. it was very clear this was not a ‘psychotic break/episode’ & he did not have any cluster c personality disorder symptoms… he didn’t show true GENUINE signs of psychosis or schizophrenia but he was TRYING to act/show what he thought these would be in order to manipulate the detectives & the system. i recommend watching if the case interests you or if you want to see some very poor attempts at ‘faking’ psychotic symptoms.. a lot of the common devil/demon talk & false auditor & sensory hallucinations. he was able to switch everything on & off to his benefit.

Yeah , I work with alot of addiction/mental health/homelessness folks and have great diagnosis understanding after 20 plus years. And it was hard to watch the interrogation because I saw him clearly putting on a show. He said the things he figured would make him seem crazy. But he had limited understanding, and it was obvious. But I'm always concerned that SOMEONE will believe them..so it's hard to watch for that reason. Otherwise, it's actually ridiculously humorous. Watching him try so hard and thinking he's smart.
@@jacedjohnson3541 there’s some other channels that have since been created since JCS stopped posting if you’re into the interrogations ect but after now what seems like ervyone got into true crime there are just so many & very few are accurate or can pick up everything. it still gives people the access to watch interrogations atleast… without the lengthy 3+ hours of things that sometimes should be cut out for an empty room ect.
As a Health Psychologist from Europe, the way this psychiatrist explained everything in such detail, really makes me proud of my profession and the professionals in it.
Really all I can comment is ...WOW. The presentation was objective, and just truly great to watch.
Anyways, I send healing to all of the family members and everyone who was affected by this horrible crime.

I also like that he is asking questions and follows with the answer so people can really understand what is he talking about, so many great qualities about the witness.
I hope this helps regain peoples trust and faith in psychiatry. People need help and tend to fear getting it. I think this shows how practical and honest the work is, and how its objective and non-persecutory. But it can be used in the court of law! So dont try to fake it!
This is the most normal psychiatrist I have ever seen in a trial. Most of them are kind of quirky or loopy looking.

He has a rudimentary knowledge of chess... someone has to have SOME smarts to do that, even if it's just well enough to lose. Chess is a game of strategy, so he would have to plan the outcome of his next 2-3 moves - even if they are "wrong".
I agree, defense has absolutely nothing to argue. Prosecutions witnesses have all made the defense team look weak. Cruz is going to pay.

Was there ever a question of whether or not he wasn't going to win? My apologies as I'm not being sarcastic, I'm seriously asking. I've missed the beginning of this trial, and only watched some of the earlier bit of this part (it has been going on forever it seems, so I ended up losing interest in some of the witnesses). I mainly watched the victim impact statements.
I took psychology in college for my police studies degree and the psychiatrist expert explained things better than what I learnt in class this feels like a refresher course to me.

Thank God they caught him in this. I have seen the tape of him being interviewed once captured, its obvious he's faking from the get-go. He knew what he did was wrong and by his own choice. He was not driven by feaking voices either. Schizophrenics are the most stigmatized because of people like him. He tried to capitalize on that. He's exploitive to others and does not care who he hurts, he is and always will be a killer.

He "Over-reported" = claimed symptoms that were not present during 21 hours of careful interviewing and assessment.
Shooter wanted to be considered "mentally ill" to dodge the Death Penalty.
What if this sob story achieved a life sentence, and he's let out years later ....and kills 20 more people?
That POS planned, celebrated his crime beforehand, lied to LE about "the voices" and mercilessly slaughtered innocent children and adults who ran to help them.

I’m very glad the prosecution has put this very intelligent specialist on the stand. I think it was obvious to a lot of people in NCs police interrogation that he was malingering but to have scientific evidence that proves it is incredible.
My husband is a democrat and I’m a republican. My husband is also a former trial attorney and prosecutor. We don’t always agree on the death penalty. I DO ESPECIALLY when it come to children. However I seriously believe he planned and knew what he was doing but at the same time, this guy is messed up and bad!!!

This guy basically told Nikolas to his face and infront of the entire court that he wasn't fooling anyone with his lies and pretending to be crazier than he really was. He does have issues but not to where he didn't know right from wrong and he chose to do wrong anyways.

The problems caused by fetal alcohol syndrome vary from child to child, but defects caused by fetal alcohol syndrome are not reversible." Expecting the brain damaged to rationally explain their conduct is really quite ignorant.

I trust they know what they are talking about or they wouldn't have been called in for credible testimony. They have flat out said that fetal alcohol syndrome would not have caused him to do this. He was not 'out of control'. He knew what he was doing was considered wrong but still desired to do it and ended up doing it anyways. The defense playing the mental health card is literally their only angle, which is why they went that route. And a lot believed it and sympathized with it. It's a sham. He is mentally screwed up, we all can agree. But he is NOT a victim like they played him to be.
emotions are more important than rational thoughts, if your emotions are messep up, you are not going to stick to the rational thoghts that killing is bad. What makes your follow the rules is what you feel not what you know.

It actually gave the families a good chuckle when Cruz suggested the Germans were "stupid" for appropriating the swastika because it was a "Native American" peace symbol.
Weirdly enough, it wasn't originally a bad symbol. It was a peace symbol but I think it came from ancient Tibetan monks.

I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in BPD and I am honestly shocked with how this man is diagnosing him with BPD. The examples he uses as symptoms are not accurate to what the symptoms really mean in the DSM And hardly suggest a borderline pd pattern. He’s just straight up reading the symptoms without understanding them and saying
”hmmm I can make this example fit as a symptom”
I’m late to the party but I love this comment! I too have BPD and was thinking he was stretching a bit for examples as well. I hate seeing BPD diagnosis just being thrown around so casually in a very public trials like this one - it adds to the stigma that people with BPD are “crazy”. They did the same thing with the Jodi Arias trials!
My jaw DROPPED when he said BPD. I have a lot of experience with the condition, a few members of my family have it. I’ve found that the condition is rooted in intense emotions, whereas Cruz has showed NOTHING in the way of it. I know you cannot tell what Cruz is REALLY like but nothing in the evidence suggests BPD. It’s such a shame, as BPD is already heavily stigmatised condition, that won’t be helped being attached to this heartless killer.

I am a psychatrist and the doctor explained the lying Nicholas Cruz was doing poorly on tests and faked a condition. I am feeling for the victim's families because no matter what punishment, they are suffering and I am doing my best to console them, I have been crying for the past 4 years traumatized by this incident and angered by the fact that the school knew he was unstable and still failed to respond on time.
Thank obama suppressed arrests and wanted alternate routes across country. Vomit.
There's a multilevel breakdown in this case:
1.) Mental health professionals for not giving Cruz the necessary counseling and intensive psychiatric care.
2.) The administrators at the schools he attended for not doing enough to guide him on the right path.
3.) Law enforcement at the local, state and federal levels for not intervening.
4.) School resource officers for not intervening during the shooting.
@@michaellovely6601 Birth mother drinking to the extent he did in fact have some brain damage from alcohol-remember the preschool master teacher/owner saying he was globally delayed-aggressive, non-social, bit way more than most children at a later age, couldn't use words to ask for what he wanted, could only eat with his hands, fell down a lot-when she had him age 1-3. They referred him to special early intervention but she didn't know how much the parents followed through. He didn't talk until 4, wasn't toilet trained until 4.

Now that he has been sentenced for his crimes; the overall consensus is that the jury got it wrong with three of the jurors who voted no on execution and ultimately gave a massive FU to the families of the victims. Due to the fact that at the time death penalty cases in Florida required a unanimous jury to sentence criminals to Death Row; Judge Elizabeth Scherer had no choice but to impose thirty-four life sentences for his crimes.

We live in a world where you don’t get hospitalized unless you actually DO SOMETHING (suicide attempt etc.) so interventions probably wouldn’t have worked anyways. This psychiatrist is an excellent expert witness to explain things to juries & the judge. It’s quite a talent to be able to condense a huge amount of psychiatric information into a brief, easily understood explanation
He wants to manipulate people to thinking he is crazy, he knows alot about different history for a crazy person, he’s trying to slide by not taking responsibility for what he did, maybe life would really be better for him to really think about what damage he caused to the families of his victims, everyday he will have lots of time to think of the people he hurt for did that will really get to him, don’t kill him that will be his punishment forever to his demise

The medical mafia has added dozens of 'mental illnesses' yo theIr diagnostic bible. It is part of Big Pharma's marketing strategy to put millions more on psych meds! They should be on trial for all the kids that commit suicide under their influence.
We could also stop coddling kids, and therefore build thicker skins so they're not getting offended and broken down so easily. Kids don't have the same tolerance for issues as older generations did/do.

@@deb6415 Florida has pretty good help when it comes to mental health. I've had a very traumatic childhood and went through 8 plus years of addiction. Never once did I think to k!ll innocent children or even adults for that matter. IMO he has no excuse not after all the help I received in Florida for mental health. Trust me I was in and out of psychiatric hospital for years in Miami. They never failed to help me even without insurance. Some places it's hard to get mental health help but I don't think Florida is one.
This forensic psychologist is absolutely amazing. His explanation is so clear and understandable, which is important when speaking as an expert witness. It also displays key skill and expertise to the jury, the court, and the defense as to giving credibility to his testimony.
If he has Anti Social Personality Disorder, than wouldn't he have Psychopathy? I didn't hear him specify which APD. It's not sociopathy as he is more calculated. I am really confused as BPD may be comorbid with APD but wouldn't be summed up as just BPD being dominant.

A common trait of those with borderline personality disorder tbh. They are desperate for attention because of their fear of abandonment. And they usually use extreme methods to get it, which is why the police, fire, ambulance & hospitals know many people with BPD, as they constantly create drama to get attention that involves one or all of us

The problem was, in his younger years his adoptive mother had no clue how to deal with him, and he manipulated her to get his way all the time, which encouraged him to continually have his little bouts of temper tantrums and destroying everything and getting his way. He already plead guilty. They are having a jury decide if he gets death penalty or life in prison. The defense is trying to say please don't give him death because he has mental health issues that caused this tragedy.

You'd be surprised at how many people with mental health issues including psychosis take notes. Some people can have functioning psychosis.

Hes a killer. Mental health categories are designed to help in treating patients. Thats the point of the DSM. Here they have to use it to help a jury decide his fate. It doesnt matter what he "is" so long as the jury can fully understand whether he was truly cognizant of his actions or not. Those were the key points. People dont realize what the DSM is for, and also what its not for, and that some things are irrelevant because thier understanding of each condition is constantly evolving.

Go watch the JCS episode about him. It is interesting to see him trying to fake his psychotic symptoms during the interrogation. If the incident wasn’t so damn sad, his trying to fake being crazy would have been funny. I am just waiting on the day it is announced he’s been taken care of in prison. I really believe that will eventually happen.

Yes and, that's what makes this so disturbing the fact that so many knew about how disturbed N.C. was but nothing was done to help him as a child. This lead to a very messed up child who grew up and, turned into a killer.
But Fetal Alcohol does not excuse his actions.

Later on in this doctor's testimony, he relates how, as a newborn, he did not have any symptom of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The mother had regular prenatal check-ups, prenatal care and random drug testing throughout her pregnancy. She didadmit that she continued to smoke cigarettes during the pregnancy.
As a european psychologist and psychotherapist, who works with teenagers at hospital, I disagree with this diagnosis. I think they underdiagnozed Nikolas. I've seen many borderline people (also men) and they don't behave as Cruz does. They often don't kill, they use this threat or hurting themselves as manipulation to not being left alone. They are impulsive, but not in the way that they will kill many people. They're very focused on 1 person with who they'll have love-hate relationship, where they love person, but at the same time hate them (like small child do), because of the dependance they feel. So it's not as simple as one time I like you, and other I don't. It's totally mixed and stirred. They are not agressive in a way as sociopaths do (because they feel tension relieved because of that), but they're more like a grown-up vulnerable child, who behaves emotionally, manipulating just to avoid being alone. They don't know who they are, because they haven't had opportunity to establish themselves in eyes of others. So they are still in a position of small child, who seeks for someone to keep them safe. It reminds me of Melanie Klein's theory about good and bad object - child hates its mother for being someone who it needs, but also takes great pleasure from interacting with her or her body. It's similar with BPD people. They fear of being "eaten" or "swallowed" by other person, so they pull and push them over and over again, to maintain status quo. Nikolas clinged to his mother, because he was unstable, alone, weird, assaulted, laughed at, etc., but he was also rude or cruel to her. He wanted someone else to love him, because he was always lonely and unaccepted, because he was the weird one. That is very common in autistic people (especially males). He was probably bullied at school, because he was this one weirdo that everyone laughs at. And because of his inabilities and lacking social skills, he hadn't known what to do, so he became agressive, because of his destroyed and undeveloped ego, which couldn't control him and rule over his impulses. Also it may be due to ADHD and - maybe - autism. People with ADHD are also often aggresive and impulsive, due to lack of internal control over impulses. Adding to that development issues, social inabilities and low cognitive functioning, we may have a person who seems borderline, but it's not BPD, but rather borderline state of mind, which in psychoanalysis means distorted psychic aparatus, close to psychotic position, where person is completely detached from reality.
Also diagnosing someone with borderline, because he searched for "who am I?" in Google is a joke to me. Many teenegers do that and they don't have personality disorders. It takes much more to that. From what I learned from this trial about Cruz, I would rather say he has some sort of deep childhood trauma, disorted attachment scheme, maybe cognitive difficulties and considering his prenatal issues with his biological background, I'd rather consider some development issues (such as ADHD, autism spectrum) or other more biological issues, not personality disorder. I think he really had problems with realizing reality and fiction. For me it's much more complex, distorted psychic than BPD.
Indeed I agree..... childhood traumas abounded in Nikolas Cruz's early life! Repeated abandonment and attachment issues throughout! Abandoned by his biological mother; and his adoptive mother and her brother had themselves been abandoned by their biological mother, which would leave deep emotional 'attachment' scars on them...... Then, at aged 5 (or 6) it was Nikolas who found his adoptive father suddenly dead at 62 in his Study.......another 'abandonment' trauma for such a young child!

Glad he was diagnosed accurately with BPD. My oldest sister (13.5 years my senior) has BPD, and while she would never have gone on a shooting spree in high school (she was head cheerleader and homecoming queen, straight A student, bulemic), as an adult her rage can be so intense that she could EASILY kill someone, including a family member, in a fit of rage. I refuse to sleep under the same roof as her now, but no one in my family was kinder to me in early childhood than she was.
BPD can be a *very serious* and dangerous personality disorder in some people, it just depends on how severe their presentation is (and past traumas are). BPD is a spectrum disorder, so you get everything from emo musicians all the way up to Jeffrey Dahmer and this guy.
The truly frightening thing is they come across as weak and vulnerable, and sometimes they talk baby talk, so you feel like you want to protect them...but you need protection FROM them because W O W can they ever turn on you with a fury like you never imagined was possible.
Although he was diagnosed with BPD also had antisocial traits.

I’m a professional in the field. What teen male doesn’t do everything Cruz did romantically as a teen? I can’t think of a guy who hasn’t done this, calling the girl a C word and B word. Becoming obsessed, suicidal, jealous, violent in many cases. In addition, Cruz can’t put his process together towards functionality in healthy ways and has not done so throughout his life and with good reasons. To put it another way, there was no reason for him to be able to do otherwise. Not everyone will resort to violence including the most horrific wanton violence. It requires an antisocial personality (a willingness to annihilate in an attempt to feel better about one’s self) which is exactly what this doctor says he found. There are many antisocial children and adults in society and in my opinion, this is a prerequisite for extreme acts against others. They are not born as such but can experience violence and abuse, including substances and medications, as early as in utero that can start them on the path. If there are no interventions, they continue and become willing and able to use violence as a tool and as a weapon as their coping style and as their way of life. I worked specifically with this group, mostly male, prior to the age of 12. To shift these kids, it requires intensive therapy at an early age. This never happened with Cruz as a child (or as an adult). This is a failure of the adults, including caretakers, parents, and professionals. This rationale and these facts are not the primary way the jury will decide on life vs death. In fact, everyone on this jury was vetted as to any possible bias to include a bias against the death penalty. As far as what will be determined by the jury, it doesn’t matter if he is rehabilitable or that his violence was intentional or even that he basically had no chance to find his way in the world without rage and violently acting out rage. It also doesn’t matter if jurors think he is manipulating them. What matters is what the jurors think about the death penalty. No matter what they said as to being able to decide on death vs life without bias, it will come down to whether they think that death is the final resolution to his life. And b/c it only takes 1 juror saying “no”, it is almost completely likely he will get life. Regardless of what any of us think should be the final resolution, it’s this jury that will decide. And if it is death, as unlikely as that would be, there will be years of appeals as we all know, even if Cruz determines he wants death, again unlikely. The jury’s decision is the reason this trial is worth paying attention to. It informs us about ourselves in so many ways, particularly that we are almost completely lame when it comes to intervention, and this is true in this case. I respect your profession but what facility could have been used to rehabilitate him? It seems like the writing was on the wall. His adopted mother was way in over her head. It is also interesting that his brother had the same mother, grew up in the home as NC and hasn't committed mass murder. We want to rehabilitate everyone, but is it possible that there is just pure evil that can't be fixed.
@@aick56 not about fixing evil. His brother was not born on substances btw. Read up on his history. There is a detachment from connection that occurs when the mother is using/drinking. Yes, many of these young boys are not able to connect on a level of vulnerability and caring. They don’t feel it even when others share it. So they don’t recognize goodness between themselves and others. Most of us do feel some connection with others or certain people. When it is not felt, there is no way to know something is missing. It’s not because they are evil that they don’t feel the glue that holds many people together. This is why there must be intervention. These therapies are effective and have been around for some time. You’ll find in the so called healing arts that most of it is lame. I do not respect my profession for this reason. Labeling people does nothing. Behavior modification does nothing. Medicating people almost always makes it worse. Pretending you’re helping and blaming the client is immoral. Choosing a healing profession but not effective solutions is a crime. We can do better.

Todd....YES! Agree 1000 percent. Nobody ever tried to rehabilitate this kid...passed him along ...someone else's problem. This country seriously needs to make mental health a priority . It should be taught from day 1 in schools and talked about. We pay more attention to athletic performance and PE than we do mental wellness. We will continue to see violence,drug usage and suicides in this country until we start making mental wellness a priority.

I have bpd but got treated for 5 years, it was very hard work…but it turned out to be inactive because of the hard work I did. I am very chill now, I don’t like fighting, yelling & being angry…it’s weird…sometimes I’m so chill that if I am in a fight, the person will be frustrated that I don’t have enough of a reaction….I digress. Anyways I would never kill anyone…so please don’t think everyone with bpd is a horrible person.
I used to have school shooting thoughts and stuff in my early teens then after going to behavioral health it helped so this school shooting thing could be mental illness

People can also be diagnosed as 'malingering' when they are not 'malingering'.
Some of the tests they administer can be confusing, not very clear, and the 'client' does not know how to answer some or many of the questions but feel that they must fill out something to complete the forms..... so they fill out what that they think is perhaps accurate but are not sure if they are or not. Verbal help is not necessarily offered.
Then they get diagnosed with malingering (faking it) when they in fact were trying their best to answer things that are not all that clear in the way they are put.
Not saying this is the case here but sometimes it is NOT that the person is trying to fake something but it is the way the forms or tests themselves are laid out along with no ability to ask questions to further clarify.
