- Dr. Charles L. Scott, a forensic psychiatrist who analyzed Nikolas Cruz for prosecutors in the Parkland shooting trial, testified that Cruz's social media postings containing racist and vile comments towards women, children and Black people are how he truly views the world. Dr. Scott said this is indicative of antisocial personality disorder and that people who have that disorder, like Cruz, have no remorse for committing violence.

The way he so calmly speaks in detail about how he killed those people....disturbing beyond comprehension. This was the KEY witness right here. I bet the jury has their minds set now

@@lucy2014 when the defense spoke about the fas and his sister came in and testified, I was torn between death penalty/life, believing he did suffer from a variety of mental handicaps that impaired him, but once Dr.Scott came in and spoke, after spending hours interviewing him, I now realize he really is just a sociopath who knows exactly what he is doing. His carefree, emotionless responses and the content of them is sickening, he carefully and intelligently planned everything out, and stuck to his game plan. Some people are just a danger to society. He is certainly one of them

I noticed that also. This would be easier said than done, but acting like he doesn't exist would be the most effective way to deal with him. He is all about the attention. That is exactly why he didn't commit suicide, like most school shooters. Nik wanted to become "a famous school shooter" and live to witness it. After the verdict is read he will end up in prison or on death row...over time he will become irrelevant and when that happens I feel for the staff at the prison. He will make sure to at least attempt to do something crazy so he ends up back in the spotlight

The reason why is because it takes forever to punish someone for the death penalty than it does to go through a normal trial there’s a bunch of other things the jury has to go through before coming to a conclusion. They wanted him to get a plea deal but none of the victims families wanted him to have one which is good but a trial includes a lot of gruesome details that otherwise would’ve been omitted

They are too concerned about whether he drew swastikas and whatnot, I've never heard about him drawing peace signs everywhere. The kids literally spoke out against racial violence. He spoke out against drug use. But everyone wants to talk about is all the murders he did. This should have ended in a mistrial a long time ago.

Wasting tax payer money? Do you have any idea of that amount of money that goes into trials for actually insane things that aren't even malicious/violent? What about the amount of money that goes into keeping people imprisoned for nonviolent crimes. This entire case is massive and very worthy of having due diligence on BOTH legal teams while they decide on if we have the intrinsic right to take this human life for his immoral acts- something many states and countries have completely outlawed.
Not only that, but this case is invaluable to the information we have on gun violence and mass murderers. The cognitive and mental portfolio of a school shooter, the shortcomings of security systems, the failures of prevention/threat detection by authorities, etc...
This trial is not a waste of money. It is money well spent. I could care less about Cruz living or dying, but I do care about the integrity of our legal system and treating executions as a VERY serious topic that supersedes the price of long trial.
Cruz's media comments demonstrate a keen awareness of past shootings and shooters, and also an identification with and desire to emulate these persons. For those who say the death penalty isn't needed and that life in prison is enough, they should be reminded that even now it is not far fetched to imagine someone else perhaps contemplating becoming the "next school shooter". What message would it send to that yet unseen potential killer if we let Cruz off relatively easy by giving him life? Society needs to take a stand.

these people tend not to value the potential future consequences. they crave power over people and they disregard any negative consequence until after the fact. situations that cause such a disturbed mental state need to be prevented, rather than only threatening severe punishment.
but i do agree, we do need to figure out ways to prevent these horrific tragedies from happening. perhaps the death penalty could deter some, but i don’t think it’s an effective enough strategy.

Yes, the CZcamsr under whose videos NC posted he wanted to be a professional school shooter reported to the FBI, they dropped the ball, alas.
They most likely didn't think it was a threat.
I have my own CZcams and I am a moderator for several others, believe me we report thing to CZcams that are this bad and worse, and in most cases nothing is done. The best we are offered is that we can remove the comments are selfs, but they are never prosecuted. In one gaming channel I monitor, we have had threats to actual people’s lives and CZcams does nothing.

disappointing how many people see this trial as a waste of time!!! What would our legal system be if we just decided people were guilty and executed them?? Obviously he is guilty and a terrible person but every person in the United States has a constitutional right to a fair trial and jury of their peers. To violate those rights only gives defense grounds for mistrial, in which case even if the jury just immediately handed over the death sentence they would be able to get it thrown out. Logic over emotion in court, no matter how heinous the crime we have to treat everyone the same or the system falls apart. Obviously this is not the case here, but if we adopted that type of thinking and applied it to anyone accused of a heinous crime, innocent people would be executed without due process. I’m not defending him in any way shape or form but people the legal process is important for a reason, to bypass it whenever we feel this enraged is to set a horrible precedent. Plus, in deciding his penalty, painful as it may be it is critical to show the jury that he was fully aware of his actions, evidence of premeditation, proof that he would be a continued threat to society were he to become eligible for parole or something, that he does not have remorse, etc all these things are so important!! Those of you who just want him to die and do not want the families to suffer through this need to understand that bypassing the proper legal routes would only result in a mistrial in which case the victims would have to go through all this AGAIN-all of this would have been for nothing. Is that what you want?

HE PLEADED GUILTY. This trial was effectively the penalty phase with the assertion that he was nuts, which would lead to him going to an institution for the criminally nuts. So choices were mental institution, prison or death. The whole business was poorly forensically managed, very American ( let's make it bigger and better) without much thought for the poor families who had already suffered so much tragedy. Everything was repeated ad nauseum. Banal cross examination - just so pedestrian and judge with little control over her courtroom as she thinks about re election.

He should never be out in society again. If he is to stay in prison at least make it a punishment. It should be unbearable pain like the victim’s families are going through. They are completely ignoring the severe impairments he had evidenced as a child, he clearly suffered brain developmental issues with his mother using every substance during her pregnancy. Even his head and facial features are abnormal. His mother lovely as she was did not take the provided opportunities given to her to get professional support and their was plenty evidence to that.
There were dozens and dozens of red flags and calls for help to professional agencies INCLUDING the FBI and police, even from the neighbour who looked after him following his mothers death. His Facebook and other “writing’s” were KNOWN about for a long time and NO services intervened.
The boy and all the victims were FAILED by the system. Demonising him, completely apportioning blame to him, sending him to death, sadly means there are NO lessons learnt. I’m a forensic mental health practitioner and the prosecution can find psychiatrists to say whatever suits them, but it changes NONE of those facts. For the families who lost and endures pain this is a very poor outcome and I hope they realise it. They won’t feel any better if he gets the death penalty or whatever he gets, it’s not healing, and I truly hope they are smart enough to look at the bigger picture. I’m sure one of the reasons these failures are not coming up is that he doesn’t have the best defence lawyers but more importantly the state will DO EVERYTHING they can to stop the spotlight being out on this issues as the would have to pay multi millions in compensation. More than that, the professionals in law enforcement who failed to act would be sacked, most definitely instantly had this happened in the UK. This is even more embarrassing because of the FBI knowing and despite the massive risks and how common these school shootings are, their profiling abilities and all their resources, they still failed to act and investigate. The neighbour told the police everything and even said how terrified she was of the fact that he buried guns in her garden, they said it’s fine, it’s quite ok for him to do that. I’m not even going to touch on the acceptable gun culture where every man and his dog has multiple weapons and assault rifles. I’m afraid until these issues are addressed these incidents will happen over and over and more often. There is an additional generation of young people further marginalised with mental health issues following Covid.
The powers at be right up to special agencies and government simply have to be realistic and “take it on the chin” when these things happen if they want to continue to deal with the issues at hand as they are. Just accept that ever more frequently this will happen and just accept that if you like the weapons more, it’s a price worth paying. This happens NO where else in the world on this scale, very isolated incidents.
And this boy is NOT even your run of the mill psychopath. OTHER THAN NICOLAS CRUZ PUBLISHING WHAT HE WAS PLANNING ON BILLBOARDS OR THE NEWSPAPER he could NOT have been more transparent. And it wasn’t spur of the moment, by their own admission it was months in planning and build up. It would have taken no time to intervene and prevent this had they picked him up, placed him in psychiatric review, come up with a plan of action and support and resources. It’s not as though he was hiding and being severely autistic without theory of mind or the empathy that most people have, it’s so easy to pick up in psychiatric evaluations.
It’s shameful neglect and the longer the broader public sign up to this lazy rhetoric the less the chance of ever remotely reducing the risk.
But if it makes every feel better demonising a boy with a very poor start in life, brain injuries in uterus, significant developmental delay, intellectual delays, autism and severe social integration difficulties as a result of his condition ( not because he’s the devil) and put him in prison and sentence him to death or whatever makes people feel better, it doesn’t seem like a court victory or a win to me.

The jury has alread said that death could be an appropriate sentance during jury selection . Those who dont believe in the death penalty would not be selected for jury duty in the case so yes they are prepared for it

The jury will have some counselling after this but I don’t think they’ll feel any guilt if they choose death, not after realising the truth and that is “if he could get his hands in a gun again he’d happily shoot every one of them and watch the life drain out of them and any children and of course animals” he doesn’t respect any life and it’s obvious. The amount of time the media has given this killer is unbelievable. He isnt handcuffed. He is just relaxed and at ease. It is almost as if he didnt kill anybody. How long does this case take? I dont remember it taking this long for Timothy McVeigh to be sentenced. It took the jury 23 hours to come to a verdict. Why is this thing taking 30 days? Why isnt he handcuffed?

Judging by his sister's account of their upbringing, he didn't have a good life in childhood. If only he had some help or had a friend to talk about his grief, he could have shared with someone and maybe he might have not done what he did. But unfortunately he did . And he doesn't show any remorse. Not a tear .
The sister grew up with their horrible birth mother- Nikolas was adopted to a safe caring home at birth. So the worst we can say about what he suffered there was that his mother used crack and alcohol whilst pregnant with him. However, thousands of babies are born to mothers using drugs and alcohol and they don't end up killers. I believe he had some predisposing factors but primarily he'd had zero real consequences for his bad behaviour up until this. This combined with his innate antisocial personality disorder and a lack of impulse control (perhaps due to damage to frontal cortex from alcohol and drug exposure in womb) made him more likely to act out like this- he should have been in an inpatient facility but he received mental health support in the community. Above all if he had never had access to a gun this couldn't have happened.
How long is this trial going to drag on ? My heart is breaking for the families that have to listen to this over and over ,give this murderer the DP ,he doesn’t deserve any less .

Someone commented regarding how would the jurors feel about passing a sentence of death on this young man............most of them probably won't live to see the sentence carried out. This case will be appealed for many years.

I'm tired of everyone focusing on all the negative aspects of this kid's life. They are too concerned about whether he drew swastikas and whatnot, I've never heard about him drawing peace signs everywhere. The kids literally spoke out against racial violence. He spoke out against drug use. But everyone wants to talk about is all the murders he did. This should have ended in a mistrial a long time ago.

They can’t be mic’d away from the podium, the jury is only allowed to hear stuff being read into record or put in front of the court. Communication between the lawyers (specifically NC’s lawyers) being overheard when they aren’t presenting could be considered a break in attorney client privilege and could get the whole case thrown out

It wouldn't have mattered if he did not truly want the help. He could have been provided with the best therapists, case managers, psychiatrists, etc. from an early age up until the day of the shooting, but if he didn't want to change it wouldn't make a difference.
Broken mental health system we have In USA. Many of the medicine given to the individuals with mental issues have lots of side effects and don’t fix the problem. This individuals treat patients just as a number and don’t care what could happened. Sad to see so many victims 😢 when this could be prevented.
