Problem I have with the majority of “adult “ animation: adult subject matter not handled In an adult way. Going purely for shock value may work for a while, but at some point the audience will say “ ok. What else ya got?” Don’t believe me? Just ask Carlos Mancia

This is usually why I tend to prefer some childrens shows and family movies. Yes, they're kid friendly, yet we got shows like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, TMNT 2012, etc. and movies like Zootopia that are geared towards a younger audience, yet dwelve deep into subject matter that are considered more adult, but yet kids can understand things. They're ignorant, not stupid. There's a difference.
I often find shows that are geared towards kids to somehow be more mature than most adult shows, for the most part anyways.

Unicorn Lover123 thats why I said “the majority “ as opposed to “all”. For every spawn(and so I’m clear it’s one of my absolute fav things ever), or maxx, or castlevania, or bojack horseman, South Park, heavy metal, spice city(so glad someone brought that up. Bakshi is my spirit animal)there’s about 10 or so brickleberrys, or nut shacks, or stripperellas, or neo yokios, or any dime a dozen edgy for edge lords shit. Look, I’m not asking for any of these things to be removed. They have a right to exist, just as much as their fans have the right to enjoy them. I’m just saying that going purely for shock value without offering anything else is not sustainable. You may grab some headlines for now, but a year later unless you have something else going for it, no one is going to care. Case in point: one of my absolute favorite games Witcher 3. Beloved by most gamers, lots of gore, lots of sex, lots of darkness , but there’s a beautiful story and astounding gameplay. People still praise it, and I guarantee it’ll be talked about for ages. By contrast, how many are still talking about hatred? How many folks actually remember that hatred even exists? I hope I’ve clarified my position to a satisfactory level .

@@YamatoFukkatsu You're conflating ideas that are only superficially similar. Both evoke a feeling of ridicule, but with wildly differing contexts. There is a stark difference between stereotypes of social minority groups peppered throughout different genres, and stereotypes in the context of a satire. The latter examples serve a point and are woven into the framework of a satire, which includes exaggeration of reality. The problems arise when the point gets muddled and contradicts itself, as Enter pointed out with various examples, but that's a matter of execution, not the stereotypes. Put another way... there's a massive difference between Blazing Saddles and Our Cartoon President.
The former stereotypes which are protested by those who call for representation, meanwhile, have no grander point to them and are not commenting on anything. They are generally not woven into a satire, and are more often than not born out of the writers' own flaws, in the sense that they're either an all-around dick, or they're actually attempting to be inclusive but are fucking it up. And then there are those who pretend to give a shit about representation but don't, and are only trying to make themselves look good and failing.
I'd also question how you figure that those who call for representation are also the ones responsible for the stereotypes you're referring to. Seems like a claim with no empirical evidence. Unless of course you're just grouping everyone into "the left" category and going from there. Almost like you're... oversimplifying a group and their views to make it easier to go after. Almost like you're... what's the word? Ah, doesn't matter. But I feel it's quite... ironic, nonetheless.

Let's hope the 2020s bring on the re-realization of these things

Saying Trump jokes is easy. Coming up with original material is difficult. Low hanging fruit but it’s a very plentiful and lack of variety crop. They all been done to death and when he provides new material (like the whole covfefe thing) it quickly becomes a dead horse. The delay due to animation time doesn’t help. As a cartoon a Trump type figure works best as a recurring character in a Simpsons or Futurama type show, like Mayor Quimby or President Nixon.

Funny enough, the only good Trump joke that I heard recently (that I laughed out loud about) was from a recent airing of a Simpsons episode that originally aired almost two decades ago; In that episode, Homer does some hand gestures on a balcony and Lisa tells him to stop imitating Mussolini (since the family is in Italy and that would reflect badly on them), to which Homer replies, "Mussolini? I thought I was imitating Trump!" Giving how some people view Trump now, I couldn't help but laugh.

One of the best decisions that the creators of _South Park_ did was reduce the Trump jokes starting in season 21. According to Trey Parker, the Trump jokes were too overdone, and the writers "fell into the same trap that _Saturday Night Live_ fell into, where it was like, 'Dude, we're just becoming CNN now.'" They wanted to go back to focusing on "the bread and butter of _South Park_ : kids being kids and being ridiculous and outragous."

Also, making constant empty jokes about Trump is a _lot_ easier than, say, actually taking the time to think about the state of American politics and what about it actually led to Trump being elected. Moderates are afraid of critical analysis like that, because then they'll realize Trump isn't the problem, he's the symptom to a larger issue with the government and politics.

The sole interesting thing about "Our Cartoon President" is the program that was used to animate it. Which was the then in development Adobe Character Animator. Which was essentially a digital puppet program. I've used it in a few of my reaction videos and I can tell you that even two years later, it still has a long way to go before it can really compete with industry standard programs like Toonboom and Animate. Mainly due to the fact that making convincing puppets that animate well is still going to take a lot of effort to draw and rig up. At which point you might as well just go into animate, and just do it all in there.

Animated political satire only works best either as single-frame political cartoons (whether in print or online) or short-form web animation which can get away with cheaper and/or cruder animation; FreedomToons would be an example of the latter. A 2 to 3 minute web cartoon can take about a week to make for a small team, but a 20 minute TV-quality cartoon, barring South Park, takes at least 6 months to do it right, considering that you have multiple animators, writers, editors, directors, etc.

Dystopia can still be escapism depending on it's implementation, such as playing a raider type character in post apocalyptic setting and reveling in the freedom and excitement that a world bereft of law and order provides, or a dystopian setting but playing the hero or the reformer and so on, or the overlord of of a dystopian society. Probably the best example I can think of for dystopianism would probably be Shin Megami Tensei, yeah the world is a monster infested Hellscape but you have the power to befriend and command monsters of your own to do battle and reshape the world according to your ideals through your actions, plus you can hit on and be hit on be various lovely (and not so lovely) monster women so yeah dystopian or not it's still very much escapism.

The reason why this joke works while most Trump jokes don’t is that it has multiple layers. There’s Trump and his memetic goal of „building a great big wall“. Then there’s the famous entertainment of the Olympics and a subversion of as to why someone would attend them. And then there’s a ridiculous mental image, that of people just jumping over this massive wall at the US border. That’s three jokes for the price of one and you don’t even need to have a certain opinion on Trump to find it funny.

2.) This one CZcams mashup titled “Donald Trump is a Dinosaur!” by Matt Orfalea, because he was able to get so many back-to-back clips, where the behavior of Donald Trump and B.P. Richfield is surprisingly uncanny. This is unlike other jokes, where Trump and the pop-culture antagonist have almost nothing in common other than being “evil”. Some of the resemblances between Trump and the corporate Triceratops have to be seen to be believed, especially because “Dinosaurs” came out decades before Trump ran for presidency, rather than “Our Cartoon President” which was obviously made after the fact and not that imaginative/coincidental.

Basically, the one and only joke upon which everything in Mr. Pickles and Sausage Party is based is as follows: "Animation is supposed to be for kids, so isn't it ironic that all this adult stuff is happening?" By creating an exception to the rule out of irony, they end up reinforcing the rule. All I want is animation for adults without a shred of irony, like what we got in the 70s and 80s.

If we want to talk movies, secret of Nim, The black cauldron, coraline. They just don't make those kinds of shows anymore. animation seems to fall into one of two categories. College level humor, IE South park & family guy or let's talk down to our audience simple. I blame our society that seems to think kids can't handle violence or complex nuanced issues without being wrapped under thinly veiled metaphors. Hate me if you want, but I really question if Steven Universe would near as popular as it is if it wasn't for the fact that all it's main characters fall under the lgbtq spectrum, and it's main protagonist being very effeminate, not saying that these things make them inherently bad or anything, but it's rather telling that a cartoon show about technicolor talking ponies becomes a cultural phenomenon simply because it does somthing unthinkable like not talk down to it's aduiance and doesn't surger code it's ideas. the times it DID try to do that, were considered some of the worst episodes of the show,

The biggest problem with the worst shows of the 2010s, and by extension any decade, is that they feel DATED. Only show that gets a pass is South Park because it's purely satire and every ep is planned and animated the week before air date, so when it does air, it hasn't aged. When you got Fairly Odd Parents in it's later years making selfie and Trump jokes, it's just nightmarish...

Also, 2010 to 2012 was when standard-definition full screen television was slowly being killed off. Plus, some shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, Family Guy Season 8, and T.U.F.F. Puppy were still being produced in standard-definition in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Y'know what I personally hate about DC Superhero Girls? Instead of creating a really fun, kick-ass scenario involving all of these awesome female superheroes and supervillains that some might hope for, the showrunners chose to use the tired and dated "quirky, adorable high school girl club" setup that everyone is SOOOO tired of at this point. This is, in my opinion, a little demeaning to these characters and kind of defeats the point of delivering a female-empowering message by resorting to decades-old stereotypes and tropes. They even go as far as to ruin favorite DC superheros like Wonder Woman and Zantanna by making them annoying and stupid teenagers, thus further alienating actual fans of the DC comics - including females who look up to these characters as feminist role models.

What bothers me isn't that there's socio-political messages in media. That's always existed. It's that socio-political messages have been inserted into EVERY piece of media. No one seems to care about telling a good story or being entertaining or being escapism anymore because now EVERYBODY has to push these messages. And, what worse, they don't even allow for audiences to draw their own conclusions. They have to tell people how to think and feel about things. Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Marge gets violence censored but then more parents get more things censored and the episode allows you to consider how much is too much and what the solution might be? If that episode aired now, it would pick a solution and cram it down your throat as the only one. One of the reasons ATLA/LOK were so good at presenting themes was that both shows presented more than one side on any subject and allowed their audience to draw their own conclusions. I know there are other shows that do that, but they feel buried under all the shows that don't. And, yeah. Maybe I'm weird, but I miss when media was diverse enough that you could just as easily watch something for entertainment only (like Darkwing Duck) AND a show with themes/messages (The Wild Thornberrys for example) AND a show with socio-political commentary (I'm going to go with Duckman since I already mentioned The Simpsons).

"Why would you want to be?" isn't necessarily a bad question to ask in itself, it all depends on what message you are trying to send and if it is well meaning, it is important to not follow up that question with bigotry or fallacies. The best follow-up to "Why would you want to be?" is asking if the other "thinks they would made happier if they were more like them and if so, why?" There is nothing wrong with wanting to be more like others as long as this isn't at the expense of your individuality and of what makes you happier. The message should be: there is nothing wrong with not fitting the norm if that means being true to yourself and you shouldn't change yourself if only to fit the stereotypes of your sexuality, your sex, your race, your social group...
And this is the problem with most shows that tries to tackle such a topic. They don't know how to empower without demonizing and ending up drowning any inspiring message and good will they might have carried.

Let me drop this as a literature professor - people really mistake what escapism is. Escapism really doesn't let you cope by completely forgetting things, or the real world around you. Yes, it can do that for a while, but a large part of why escapism works is the fact that the narrative gently eases you back into looking at issues you are running away from. That initial moment of distancing from reality is supposed to give you grounding, and that grounding helps you then to analyze a situation in a calmer manner. You can make sense of your own emotions if you see a character going through something similar, or write a character like that, since it forces your mind to put it into understandable forms, and give you a detached experience.
Not to mention it is outright cruel to say that political themes or feelings should not be put into shows. Not only does this cut away from vast opportunities at narrative and storytelling, and take away healthy way of escapism, it is just outright cruel to tell an author not to express their feelings via their work. It's basically telling them that they are just your mindless machine for entertainment production, and not a human being. If a theme of, let's say, poverty can be incorporated into a story, and weighs heavily on a creator's mind, it's inhumane to deny them that expression. Even still, many of them will do that subconsciously. I hadn't realized how much of my own experiences I put into my own works until years later. In my eyes, "remove your political views from your show" is a cruel and wrong message, and is often used for censorship.
Yes, everything is political, and, for society to function, it kinda has to be. But, contrary to the popular belief, it is not a bad thing, not even close. It's healthy when media and shows connect to the real world, even better when they ease into it gradually. Things becoming more political is far from bad.

Honestly, considering Jimmy Kimmel has two characters on his talkshow that are basically "let's mock and laugh at the wacky foreigner", he has no room to reprimand others for being racist.
