the funny thing about golf equipment is most golfers are not anywhere near good enough for most of it to make a difference in scoring.. growing up in the 70's and 80's i can tell you the clubs were pretty primitive, we didnt think so however, and yet good players made it happen. with all of the advances the scores have not changed for normal folks. we can hit a driver farther but unless it finds a fairway you are just 10 yrds deeper in the shit. but my god is it a lucrative industry w all of us chasing rainbows. nice review btw!

On the 12 yards difference in average distance, you need to remember that’s when you hit it 280,
If you only carry your driver 200-220 the difference should be even less, if there is a difference at all.
Rick is swinging 112mph, so the extra spin on the Kirkland is hurting him,
But if you’re swinging slower that extra spin could actually help you gain distance by keeping the ball in the air for longer

The problem i have with the Kirkland is that while $200 is a great price, I can go get a cobra aerojet, a Callaway rouge, or maybe even a paradym, or a tsi3 for the same money used and I feel like they all have more potential. That being said, I saw a different video where they put a premium shaft in the Kirkland. (It has a Mizuno sleeve). The Kirkland kept up the the premium driver on good shots but lost on forgiveness and dispersion. Seems like all the Kirkland golf stuff is the same. It performs slightly worse than the major brands, but is an amazing VALUE for cost for NEW clubs/balls etc... on a personal level tho, I would look to the 2nd hand market for drivers and irons. I have some of their wedges and as long as their loft, bounce and grind works for you they perform well. I like them, just no options.

      Or
$150-$200 for driver fitting (fitting fee might be waived with driver purchase), $550 for Qi10 + $350 for premium shaft. $900 for driver, $1050-$1100 if fitting fee not waived.
      You'd save $150 - $350, depending.

If you're pushing for the Ryder Cup then it makes sense to get the Taylor Made. For nearly everyone else, you'll get more distance spending the extra £300 on coaching than you will do from buying the best club on the market.
Similar story with guitars. David Gilmour playing David Gilmour's custom Strat is going to be better than David Gilmour playing my made in Mexico Strat. Me playing David Gilmour's custom Strat is still me. The odd note might sound great but I'm not going to suddenly bang out the solo from Comfortably Numb.

I bought my Qi10 Max and it was tough, because I had the Sim2Max and I love that driver, but my misshits are going 15 yards further and that's really the difference between these newer drivers. My course is fairly simple, so it only matters on a single hole were we've got a bunker that requires atleast 225 carry, which I couldn't do on misshits before, but now I can and it's an easy wedge into a narrow green :D

I had the PXG 0211 a few years ago and absolutely hated it, ridiculously unforgiving, despite getting the spec I wanted. Got rid of it and got a used TSI3 and it's chalk and cheese the difference. I'd buy older models of the big brands over budget options all day long.

I wish we were shown the shot dispersion difference. I understand one club is fitted and the other is off the shelf, but I'd be curious how much more/less dispersion there was with the Kirkland. The yardage makes sense with the spin as stated in the video, but I'm curious if the Qi10 actually helps the dispersion and miss hits or if its all just marketing.

  • @JonCates-vx5gu

Correct me if I am wrong but if the Qi10 is a fitted driver with what I assume is not a stock shaft option it's really comparing a $1200 driver to a $200 driver. Last 2 fitted drivers I bought were 1200-1300 dollars

It seems like today you just weren’t hitting the Kirkland as sharply as yesterday. The numbers were OK but you had some drives that hit 300+ yards one was 308. But the QI 10 did a great job, overall. I think for the same money you could find a condition used Taylormade M1, Callaway Epic Max LS, Callaway Mavrik that would rock the boat and do just as good as the QI 10. But for the price charged by Costco a fantastic buy and a shafted upgrade would likely increase performance also.

If the only consideration was pounds per yard, the Kirkland would win hands down, especially as it’s only 10 to 12 yards shorter.
Interesting review, as always. Not sure what I’d experience between the Budget Kirkland and the top end TaylorMade driver. At the end of the day, it’s going to be down to whatever the motivation is on the day.
Personally I’d probably be looking at the end of a line previous season or previous year, or several years drivers to compare & make a decision, if we’re in the market for a new driver.
If all I had was £200 to spend on a driver, I suppose the Kirkland would be an option. But equally, if I were prepared to pay upwards of £500 on a driver, which I think is ridiculous, no matter how much research has gone into it, I suppose the TaylorMade might be an option too. 🤷‍♂️

  • @mklobnak

Rick, I would love to see you re-shaft the Kirkland with an extra stiff shaft and hit first with that as opposed to the TaylorMade. Some of us are getting “longer in the tooth.” I believe that swing speed drops slightly during the round. I wonder if there would be a difference in spin rate and carry as well. Just my thoughts. Great review, otherwise.

Check out used (or new) Mizuno drivers. It's pretty hard to argue with the prices and their performance great. I bought a used ST-Z 220 last season for rougly the same price as that Kirkland, and I'm almost positive the Kirkland won't beat it. I wouldn't drop Qi10 money for a possible marginal performance upgrade either.

Good review, but this is based on a good golfer with a consistent swing. I’m a 21 handicapper, so what would be better for me who doesn’t have the consistency? I tried the stealth 2 (because of its forgiveness) and hit it longer and straight each time, compared to my current driver, despite where on the clubhead I hit the ball. Shouldn’t the forgiveness be what I should gauge which club to buy?? Any advice will be appreciated.
