You guys have fantastic content and personalities, I've learned way more about Whiskey than I ever thought possible. Most of my friends I typically drink with stick to Jack Daniels or Fireball, but after learning so much I've realized how much I've missed out on. I lived in London where they called cookies biscuits. Now I live in The Netherlands where they call cookies koekjes. But I was raised in Texas where a cookie is a cookie and a biscuit is an mother truckin biscuit!

So, I decided to buy some whiskey and after watching several of your videos I bought angel's envy and The Glenlivet single malt scotch. I got a compliment on the angels envy.

Hey there fellas, just found your channel. Not really a whiskey kind of guy, I prefer my rum and my gins, but a bottle of Jameson can never do too much harm.
I am enjoying a bottle of rabbit hole bourbon whisky as I watch this, all I know is I am a customer for life! I truly enjoyed this whisky and I highly recommend it, the aroma and taste is worth every penny! This will be my whisky go to from now on! I will definitely make it a must to go and see the distillery as soon as possible.
Daniel even though i did refer to you as a girl scout in previous comment. I do appreciate the kilt. I as a proud american have ancestors from the highland clan of the O'donalds and have proundly worn my kilt. Looks great..way to share the heritage.

I only started really tasting whisky (I used to just knock 'me back) out of the five I've tried since finding your channel, basic Jameson, Glenlivet 12, Glenlivet Founders Reserve, Chivas 12 and Bowmore 12, the Bowmore is the fav at this moment. Next on the list is Glenfiddich and Johnnie Walker black 12. Whiskey is expensive in Quebec!
When I first heard Rex say “biscuit” I thought of the food in the professional photo taped to the door.
But then I thought, “how long was Rex out in the Texas sun that he’s tasting that in whisky?”
When Daniel clarified the term biscuit, it all made sense. I side with the hobbit.

Update on the Scotland trip. I'm in Edinburgh right now and there is a whiskey bar called the Abernauch right next to my hostel they have over 250 single malts, I just had Ardbeg dark cove (after seeing how much you guys enjoyed it I had to try, it was excellent) and I had the dalmore cigar malt (also excellent) I'm here for one more night and need some recommendations on malts to try. I was thinking of trying the octomore 7.1 cask strength. Any recommendations are welcome and I'll let you all know how they are.

Hi Daniel and Rex! I've discovered this channel only recently and I'm really enjoying the content. I've never actually had whiskey (I feel like I ruined it for myself when I tried to drink Jack Daniels as a teenager, and I'm not a big fan of hard liquor) but your videos made me very curious to give it a try. I've also watched the video with top 10 whiskeys for beginners and it's my favourite so far, I think I'll start from there. A friend of mine suggested trying the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 but I'm scared to purchase a bottle of anything without trying it first. Anyway, I just want to say thanks for making videos, I think your content is great, I could listen to you talk about whiskey all day. I'm really excited to try some of it myself, I feel like it's a whole world I'm missing out on. Looking forward to more videos, keep up the good work! :)

New to the channel, and I love the reviews so far! I'm new to whiskey, though I found monkey shoulder and absolutely loved it! Though with that being said.. which whiskey should I try next?
Two things.
First: The Talisker Dark Storm I promised you guys ended up in a bin at the airport because it wasn't in a properly sealed container. The bastards.
Second: Mooch story!
I am at Vegas right now, and ordered a Macallan 12 to help with digestion of the Ramsay burger.
They brought it, I sip it and freeze. I am no whiskey expert, but this had to be Talisker. No way Macallan is this sharp.
I call the bartender, he starts to apologise. They mixed up orders with another table. They gave me Talisker 10.
He brought me back the Macallan and was about to take the Talisker away. I couldn't let it go down the drain, so I stop him and get two for price of one.
And then the waiter comes again, and brings me Angel's Envy, a gift from the other guy who got the bad order. As thanks for catching it.
And that is how I got 3 for 1, and thus became Moochster myself.

I didn't know what you meant by round until I tasted Rabbit Hole bourbon. It is an easy, smooth sipper and it is nice. Rabbit Hole is for Friday evenings after work with friends... with a designated driver.

Hey guys :) I think I started watching this channel when I was 16, and stopped when I was 18 or 19. I even supported on patreon for a year or two. Though there was a time, I watched every Vault and Tribe video, I could never try the whiskey with you guys. I turned 21 in October and soon after had to stop supporting because school is expensive and I hadn't even been watching videos. I sat down tonight because I had kung fu'd some bulleit and wanted to watch any videos of you also drinking some. Around 10:44 , "we have a barrel somewhere" made me laugh out loud :) As if it's difficult to find a barrel today. It's truly impressive how far you've come. :))

When my Laphroaig gets below a half or a third instead of trying to drink it real fast before it oxidizes I blend it with Ardmore legacy or Speyburn, etc at that 2:1 ratio etc and it tastes fantastic

Hey guys fourth time commenting and now i got a whisky story. Over the last couple days i had the oppertunity to go on a buisness trip where all expensess where paid by the company and so we went out as group to a bar so i saw this as an oppertunity to try out some free scotch so i had my first experience of Glenlivet 12, Mcallan 12 and Glenmorangie 10. Got say i loved all 3 i was supprised in my short time with whisky i was able to pull out some differences between all 3. Looking forward to getting some of my own in the near future.

I'd love to hear you guys argue about this: in terms of complexity, how would you rank the most popular (ie most avaliable) whiskys from an certain area, for instance highland?
I toured the Rabbit Hole Distillery this past Saturday because they have a late, 7 o'clock tour and a Taylor Swift lookalike who teaches middle school science who was charming and knowledgable presented us a sampling before giving the tour had us try four nice sized samples including their remarkable gin that they produce. I highly recommend it, but book at least a couple weeks in advance.

Scones, American biscuits, and shortcakes (like strawberry shortcake) are all culinary cousins that use the "blend-mix method". The only difference is maybe tweaking the baking soda, adding sugar, changing the fat. Otherwise, they are very similar, just like polenta and grits ... which that case it's even worse because, whether you are American Southern or Italian, one is heritage and the other is heresy
i bought a bottle of balvenie 12 doublewood and something was missing ... so i added caol ila 12, about 15% .... perfect!

Rex hush, Daniel is in the right with this war. A true biscuit does not have cold butter cut into the flour, instead it has soft butter folded into it. Taking this further to step on you moochness a bit, what you call a biscuit can and is used as pie dough with the addition of some simple spices and sugar then rolled thin. As a former chef of 11 years I say your argument doesn't hold cheap rail spirits.

Yeesssssss! I was excited to hear what you thought of this one, been wanting to try it for a while now....
If you look up ships biscuits you will see why American biscuits are called biscuits. They are the same general size, shape, and ingredients. Flour, lard (butter) and milk or water. They simply cooked them till all the moisture was out and they were flat as roofing tiles ... thus easy to ship.
We made the same thing, called it the same thing, and just ate them hot out the oven. And still, do to this day.
Or ... if you go back far enough, we too made them hard as bricks for travel. The wagon settlers to ... *cough* Texas *cough* ... carried barrels of them along. bought from the same English suppliers that made them for ships. It was easier to transport than flour that could get ruined.
Now biscuits and gravy comes from not wanting to waste anything that could be turned into food. Not even greasy oil in a pan from frying sausage or bacon. Frugal food for a hungry people not sure where their next meal was coming from.

Hi Daniel & Rex, firstly I've spent almost my entire life within sight of the Midleton Distillery and naturally I have a great love of the amazing whiskey made on my doorstep. Like you, Redbreast & Green Spot would be among my favourites but there are so many amazing Irish whiskeys out there. I also love Scotch, be it light & blended or single malt reeking of Islay turf... BUT... I DO NOT GET BOURBOUN.
To be fair, I have never tried top shelf bourboun but still, I have never tasted one I liked & entry level Irish or scotch can be amazing.
On your recommendation I bought Bulleit Bourboun and for the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would choose this over a bottle of scotch or Irish? I do not have a sommelier's palate but the main tasting note I get is disappointment. I tried it neat, on the rocks and drowned in Coke and even then as I take that tiny inhale before each sip all I taste is regret. For similar money I could have bought a Black Barrel or a Caskmates Stout edition.
What am I missing and can you please do a bourboun for dummies type video?

okay so ive heard you and other say that an open bottle less then a quarter full needs to be finished quick but half full or more will last years. is it true you can use wine preservers to prevent a whiskey from oxidizing? ive also heard you can decant into smaller bottles, is this true? i also know someone who uses some thing to remove air from bottles.
basically what i want to know are there any negative side effects to using any of these methods? is there a best practice for trying to preserve rare whiskey thats been opened? or any whiskey for that matter? cause every so often i come across some pretty rare bottles and i was thinking if i ever dropped money on one or am gifted another whats the best way to preserve them if say i wanted to keep it only for special occasions.

This comment may never be seen by you guys but never the less you guys should do a whiskey and cigar pairing with Rabbit Hole and Diesel Whiskey Row cigar. Diesel used rabbit hole barrels and aged their binder in them.

holy corn! it took me what seemed like a month but i am finally caught up. I have also seen this channel grow about 15k subscribers since I started. so great job guys. I have a list of 20 as the most interesting whiskeys i will be buying asap. as much as I don't want to agree with Rex cause he always interrupts Daniels interesting nerdy stories or facts, biscuit = biscuit as in biscuit and gravy. speaking of interrupting we should buy Rex a comfy chair to sit in and enjoy the whiskey whilst Daniel does his nerdy rants. he could even name the chair the "fuck Daniel" chair since he doesn't like nerd facts or stories about whiskey. the details is why I took an interest in whisky in the first place. i look forward to learning more.
I love the whiskey advent calender. 2017 will be year 2 for me. The small bottles work amazing to get a good tester. Is there anything else that is like this. That way i do not have to mooch super expensive drams.

Sounds like Rabbit Hole is aiming for the market spot that Woodford is in. Well rounded and smooth, nothing in the offensive flavoring to appeal to the masses, and a price point above entry but not super high...how close are their flavor profiles?

I have a question for the guys or the community, I've been trying a few different bourbons lately and keep finding a "bubblegum" flavor. It varies from Big Red to Bazooka to Juicy Fruit. What is this?! Clearly my brain isn't separating a sugar and fruit flavor I can't identify and my taste "vocabulary" is too limited to nail down what it is. Keep up the great work! Love this show and the growing community.
daniel gets bubblegum more often than me. I usually get a sweetened cherry flavor, which could definitely be a cousin to the bubblegum you're getting.
Are you guys still doing the Blendageddons with all the unused whiskey in the classes? If so have any two of them tasted the same?
We only just tried this with one. But in the next two weeks, we'll end up with three. It's going to be amazing!

Let's settle this; from the etymology section of the "Biscuit" Wikipedia page:
"The Old French word bescuit is derived from the Latin words bis (twice) and coquere, coctus (to cook, cooked), and, hence, means "twice-cooked". This is because biscuits were originally cooked in a twofold process: first baked, and then dried out in a slow oven. This term was then adapted into English in the 14th century during the Middle Ages, in the Middle English word bisquite, to represent a hard, twice-baked product.[7] The Dutch language from around 1703 had adopted the word koekje ("little cake") to have a similar meaning for a similar hard, baked product.[8] The difference between the secondary Dutch word and that of Latin origin is that, whereas the koekje is a cake that rises during baking, the biscuit, which has no raising agent, in general does not".
This actually means, that the original meaning of the word cookie, is a "cake that rises during baking" (such as the american biscuits). This leads us to the inevitable conclusion, that the american biscuit is closer to being a cookie than a biscuit, and the english version therefore also must be considered (and hailed) as the only true type of biscuit!

yes, definitely. unless you're trying to build a collection, a small sample is better than rolling the dice on a full bottle that you may not like.

OK, so this is the last time weigh in on the Biscuit/Cookie argument. Declaration...I'm an Aussie. Here, I can enjoy a shortbread biscuit but I can also enjoy a chocolate chip cookie. Do Cookies in the USA need to be circular? Daniel, if you give Rex a rectangular shortbread, does he still call it a cookie?
