    Ohio, where I live, is excellent for disabled people. I'm totally blind, and I've gotten excellent services here, compared to my home state of Massachusetts.

    South Carolina is "supposed"to be one of the top states to live in for disabled people. Living here in Sc I don't see it. My husband and I have to die in order for my son to be placed somewhere. He is now 18 and severely disabled. I'm not wanting him placed any time to soon but as he nears his mid twenties, thirtys , we would like to have him adjusted to a place before we die. We are in our 50's now and time is ticking. This makes me want to move to New Jersey as he will be done school at 21. I guess the waiting list is long but not as long as the one here in Sc.

      Unfortunately, that was a common thing that Dr's told parents to do with their disabled children up until the early 70s when more community resources became available for children with disabilities and laws were starting to be enacted for children with disabilities to receive a free and appropriate education in public schools in the USA. I have cerebral palsy and when I was a child, my parents were told to put me in an institution and forget about me, I'm so glad that they didn't listen because being able to live at home with my family meant that I was able to go to a regular school and graduate high school with a regular diploma and go on to college and receive a associate degree in business , I will further my education at some point in time, have a job and live on my own, have friends and relationships and have a social life. If I lived in a institution, none of that would've happened.

      Star Jackson there are many people who view the severely intellectual disability population as in capable of understanding when this is actually further from the truth the problem has always been giving the tools that are out there for communication and then some people either have a lack of early intervention services were people just give up to therefore they don’t have the skills necessary

    It’s so sad to see this. What’s the point of a person essentially being a year old or 2 years old their whole entire life? They can’t do anything, they are stuck all their life, they hardly know what’s going on, and they require CONSTANT care. I just don’t see the point in this. Those people can’t be enjoying life that much.

    • @sushifox2058
      @sushifox2058 Před 2 lety +1

      And that may be that’s why you can only make them as happy as possible, it’s very hard for parents to take care of a child when they get older so places like this are a godsend.
      Even if they can’t do anything they may be completely aware of themselves.

      Have you thought about putting your son in with a roommate companion? They have to go through the same screening as group home staff. Some individuals prefer that over group homes, I don't know if that is what you are interested in?
