It kinda amazes me Ernie Harwell doesnt really get as much respect as other Hall of Fame MLB announcers... I feel like hes always been way way underrated and never gets the credit he really deserves. Especially when it comes to his one liners, home run calls, duration of his career, and other things of that nature... if you ask me hes def easily a top 5 mlb broadcaster of all time.... the dude literally spent I think 42 years calling tigers games....

Moment number 3 should have been number 1 in my opinion. It was cool watching Gibson blast that HR, but the Tigers were already winning, not to mention up 3 games to 1. In 68 the Tigers were down 3 games to 1 and came back to win the World Series winning the last 2 games on the road, beating the great Bob Gibson in game 7.

I agree, Lance Parrish homered off Goose Gossage earlier to put the Tigers ahead. 5-4. Gossage didn’t want to pitch to Lance who was waiting in the batters box before Gibson, as he homers earlier thinking he could handle Gibson. After Gibson’s 3 run homer, he struck Lance out. He should have walked Gibson as Dick Williams wanted. The Tigers most likely would have still won 5-4. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mikey's only career home run. Did he have a charmed World Series or what? Unbelievable. People seem to forget he retired as the all-team leader for strike outs by a lefty (Steve Carlton passed him, not sure who holds it now). 217 wins. WS MVP. 15 wins or better 8 out of 16 years, including a 25 win campaign. And zero love from the Hall? I know he lost his share and his ERA is up there a bit but he was a helluva pitcher back in the day. According to Tim McCarver, Roger Maris warned the Cards. He said McClain was good but look out for Lolich. The guy is nasty. As an aside, why Brock didn't slide that day is still beyond me. I think if he does, the Cards may have put us away. Thanks Lou!
Gotta take umbrage with Denny's 30th win coming in at 22.. Something that hadn't been done since Dizzy Dean in 34 and given today's specialists and 5-man rotations will likely never be done again? That's gotta be top-five. Same goes for Fidrych against the Yankees on Monday Night Baseball. It wasn't part of any post-season magic but it was a cultural phenomena. The Bird became the Word that night. And MAN, did we need it. That game's gotta be top-ten at least.
I can't look at that blown call by Joyce that cost Galarraga his perfect game. I sat in the same spot on my couch for every pitch of that game. The man was flat out dealing. Best pitching performance I've ever seen by a Tiger. Not overpowering, just complete, total command. And to get ripped off like that? I remember calling my best friend and we were both BESIDE OURSELVES!!!! 😡Galarraga handled it with more grace than I've ever seen. Still pisses me off to this day though. Look how far down the line Joyce was. I know he apologized and all but don't get me started on that lazy SOB... And staying with the pitching, was Morris a post-season stud or what? Three titles with three different teams and even though he was wearing a Twins uniform his 10 inning 1-0 shutout in Game 7 to beat the Braves was one of my personal top-five sports moments of all time, let alone baseball.
I loved the 84 team, and no doubt, the shear drama of Gibby doing that against Gossage was tremendous. The back and forth between Gibby and Sparky, ("He don't wanna walk you") the arms extended at the end, all of it makes the moment the top-five for sure but to be honest, we all knew the Padres were cooked. The Tigers were light years better. Personally, I wanted the Cubs that year but their quirky thing about no lights at Wrigley cost them home field and most likely a trip to the Series.
No, the 68 team winning the Series has to be #1. To come back from 3 to 1 down, against that Card team, and beating Bob Gibson to do it? Lolich? On two days rest? After what we went through in 67 with the riots? The healing effect that club had on the city was unlike anything in my lifetime. There is the story of the telegram the Apollo 8 Crew got thanking them for saving 1968. Well, that's what that club did for Detroit.
Still, you can tell from my lengthy monologue (which likely no one will get through) that I loved your video. Thanks for posting it. Went to my first game in the old stadium in 67 (Earl Wilson beat the Red Sox) and have been a diehard fan ever since, 54 years and going strong. I'm sure there were some special moments prior to 68 with Greenberg, Cobb, Cochrane, Newhouser and Gehringer (I worked with his sister in-law by the way, lovely lady) but video for those would be hard to find. I enjoyed the ride here very much. Sharing it now. Thanks again.
    Go Get Em Tigers!

But there a life lesson parents should use in the fact that the next day, he was accountable, sorrowful that his mistake cost that kid a life changing historical moment. And in return, Gallaraga wasn't angry, but tried to comfort him. Were human we all make mistakes, just own it, try to learn from it and leave it in the past. It doesn't even matter if you have a ton of momentum, like the Tigers had in 87. When it comes to playoff baseball, literally anything goes, and that was on full display. Truly a shame. I thank you for the time and effort you put into compiling this retrospective. I am really glad you said greatest moments from all eras that you could find footage for. There were many more. I certainly do not agree with number one. The number one moment for me will always be Mickey Lolich jumping into Freehan's arms after the foul ball was caught capping the Tigers overcoming a three game deficit to become the 1968 World Champions. I remember watching that game on TV. Nothing will ever top that!!!!!
Also in game five you did not get the essence of that great moment when Detroit scored the runs to begin their remarkable comeback. The real moment there was when manager Mayo Smith decided not to pinch hit for Lolich, and Mickey game through with a base hit. That is the highlight there. It set up Kaline's hit.
Another great moment, is one that there is only an audio clip for. It was when Don Wert, a weak hitting third baseman got a base hit to score Al Kaline to allow the Tigs to clinch the 1968 pennant. I will never forget the great Ernie Harwell's words, "Let's listen to the bedlam here at Tiger Stadium." I was listening to that game on the radio. I will never forget that moment.
1968 alone must have had at least 10 great moments that would top many on your list.
July 19 Tom Matchik's dramatic clutch home run at Tiger Stadium to give the Tigers a come from behind win over the Orioles.
June 24 - Jim Northup hit two grand slams in one game.
September 1 - Denny McLain initiates a triple play against the Orioles with the bases loaded solidifying his 27th victory.
Yet another where there is no footage, was Norman Cash's first homerun to clear the right field roof in Tiger Stadium. I was actually at that game and saw it. I was 11 years old and I thought Cash was Superman.
That is just a few that I was fortunate enough to witness.
I really enjoyed your video, thanks again.

Or Kaline belting his 307th HR to pass Greenberg as the all-time team leader?! Or Kaline's HOF induction?! Also, one of the great catches of all-time: Mickey Stanley full-out running, back to the plate, into deep center at Tiger Stadium and diving for and catching the ball as he slid across the warning track. (every bit as great as the Mays catch in the 50's!) Enjoyed this immensely but you did miss a few that were that were more than worthy.

1983 saw Milt Wilcox near miss a perfect game. Not sure it would make this list, but I remember it.
1979 saw Disco Demolition Night. That was in Chicago, but was a rare double header sweep for the perennial 5th place Tigers.

I wouldn't call this accurate, but it was fun to watch. Tiger Stadium had much more "top" moments than what happened at Comerica.

Look at those crowds @ Comerica. Ahhhh the good ole days. They have fallen sooooooo bad. Many of these make me smile...... BIG smiles. Yet, the way they play now, the way mgnt has f*ed this up induces me to cry. (I'm 68)

That was great. I was only gonna watch 50-40 but I couldn't stop.
What about Denny McClain , he may have messed up later , but 31 wins is thirty one wins.
    Thanks for the good memories.
I first started following the Tigers in 61, Charlie Maxwell, Rocky Colovito , Harvey Kueen, Chico Fernandez , Frank Kart, Jim Bunnings, Paul Foytak.
Thanks , again, you made my day.

Somewhere in my collection of VHS tapes I have the complete games of moments 24 and 17. I was 16 years old at the time and a die hard Tiger fan. My favorite player was Darrell Evans, who was nice enough to give me an autograph and take a picture with me, when I met him in 1986.
As far as moment 20 is concerned, let's not forget the GREAT catch that Jackson made in the top of the 9th.
Had he not caught that ball, the "missed" Jim Joyce call wouldn't even be an issue. Much respect to Jim Joyce for owning up to his mistake.

  • @paultheaudaciousbradford6772

You’d think the Tigers are a recent expansion team instead of one of the charter teams of the AL. The vast majority of these “great moments” are in the 21st Century.
    1935, 1945, 1968, 1984 - those are the championship years.

Thanks for this video!! Well done!! The perfect video to watch as we near opening day! Personally I would’ve included the 1935, and 1945 World Series clinchers (tough to find good quality film I would guess.) and put the 68 World Series number one. Still, small potatoes. I appreciate all the hard work in putting this video together. God bless.

That year of 1984 for the Detroit tigers was one awesome year they made history starting off the year I forgot about that 35 and 5 that's unheard of 35 wins and five losses just ran over everybody wow had the best manager that ever will be sparky I mean the team was just complete travel where to go up the middle Gibson on right field the bullpen was just I can't even put it in words you had a right-hander and a left-handed closer was just too much I don't think there will be another team that would dominate baseball like the tigers did in.

56:14- I was at this game with my dad. In fact, when there were 2 OUT, the whole stadium started singing:
"Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey, hey, hey, goodbye!" to the Yankees. I actually started the singing, and the whole ballpark joined in.

Surprised Miggy getting the Triple Crown isn't higher. It's quite a bit more rare than a franchise winning a World Series even back to back. Being from Detroit I knew Gibson's homerun was going to be #1. Even though it was just a home run it was something I always saw on TV growing up. Everyone always referenced it even though it was just a home run. I was at the game when Cecil Fielder knocked it over the roof in the old Tiger Stadium. That's probably my favorite home run but for obvious reasons.

Larry Herndon crushing a home run into the second deck in center field on opening day 1986 (I think). Even a few highlights of home runs at old Tiger Stadium. Reggie Jackson 71' All Star game, Roger Maris, etc, etc. Great video! Thank you.
