"...this is a set up to where in the further future he will grow some muscle."
You would never know by grabbing him through loose clothing.
Bruce Lee was completely smooth skinned and soft as a girl in his looks. Then he would flex and his entire body would show rippled cordes of micro muscle, like he was put together by string and fishing line.
This is why he could deliver a 2" power punch that could send a man flying back six feet through the air into a chair.
When they show Paul Atreides 'get muscle' it will be as a function of his going native, where all the water will be wrung out of him and he will look like old boot leather by the time he is 30. Like all Westerners who bake themselves to a husk in the Middle East do.
Living in a desert changes the genome and makes it less healthy, in a lot of ways as you live in a constant state of overtemp (cooking your brain and key organs) and dehydration. Pretending otherwise is going to make everyone in these movies look stupidly water-fat.
As an alternative, how much more interesting would it be if they FORCED the little soft faced effeminate to go on his first 'man journey', with a couple escorts (Gurney and Duncan and about ten picked men). Because this is how the actual Cursus Honorum as Path To Command begins.
And imagine that he grinned shyly and immediately began to enjoy it. Because he can play mind games too.
      Of course, he might die.
Just as he might get nicked when his training partner teaches him a new technique called 'Fucking and Music is about Mood, Fighting is about Necessity!'.
But that's why every royal house has a wife with at least four kids, two male, and multiple concubines whose bastards can be legitimized if there is a major accident or disease and she doesn't want to try again.
Except we can't show that either because it 'dehumanizes' the woman to be a brood mare (her gender role) and surround her child with other children who will love him as the brothers and sisters of an extended family they actually are.
Because, you know, scifi is never about realism of a new experience in altered environmental normed social conditions.
The notion that Paul is 'special' is ridiculous, if they keep him like a bird in a gilded cage. The Romans knew what made a man leadership material was exposure, to the man-house of how things were done in the world and thus how he performed in tutelage, in martial and athletic training, and in more advanced financial, economic and strategic understandings.
What makes rich kids successful in life is their interaction with other wealthy scions of similar genetic ability (mean IQ 125) and outlook (predatory) perspective. But it's also how rapidly their parents Achilles dip them in the experiences of a broader world to set context.
And (in Rome) that never stopped, from the moment they have chosen friends and playdates to the scholaria they are sent to learn from.
And then they join the military, on the level of an OCS/ROTC type candidate and 'command men' via a senior Centurion who kept him from looking too great a fool as he watched HOW orders were given while smoothing the polish on /why/ they were.
Do you see Paul Atreides do any of this? No. He's the kept only child who either ends up an accountant, living in his parent's basement or a suspect in a mass shooting.
There is no reason for him to be that socially awkward.
NOR would he share worries with a junior officer, however much he liked him. THAT would be thrashed right out of him, early on, as an 'information is power and informants belong to those who command their loyalty, not act friendly to them'.
Finally, you have Atreides' gifts, as both Mentat and Bene Gesserite he-witch. Which, given what Jessica was trying for would/should almost certainly have included deep suggestive training to capture and focus or stabilize the gifts of prediction or prescience, however they were achieved.
Because you don't breed humans for trait-X and then stand back and say: 'Yeah, that's about right...' when you see the finished product, like it was a show dog or a rose. Jessica essentially put a blood debt on her own as her husband's life with one of the most wickedly evil psychotic sub societies within the Empire to achieve this on generation early Kwisatz Haderach outcome.
Are you honestly going to say she didn't known of what she messed with, genetically, given all the OTHER things she forcibly imparted on a male child? Complete rubbish. Especially as the Bene Tleilax could recall almost all of a person's past-life experiences, via genetic memory. Why, if they know so much about the human soul, are they so primitive in it's comprehension as to treat children like medical experiments?
Again, this is why the story, as told by Frank Herbert in the 1970s, is really kind've dated to the point of awkwardness.
These people treat their son in a way which is sadistic as hell by effectively refusing to see him as a child but a minime version of themselves and then further manage to fuck things up by not GIVING HIM THE UPBRINGING that the wealthy always do in imparting that kind of no-childhood social awareness.
All because Herbert didn't have time or inclination to show Paul as doing anything more than jumping out, from the opening scenes, 'filled with portent' as a perfect-formed warrior messiah.
      Such bullshit.
If you have a tradition of raising supermen through selective breeding and gene expression, _show it_.
Because that would have actually been interesting.

I especially like how Denis and his casting director worked on family resemblance. Timothee and Rebecca are just utterly perfect mother and son, and when put with Oscar Isaac you can see where Paul got the slightly darker skin tone and dark features from in combination with his mother. Meanwhile Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken as Irulan and Shaddam also have a certain familial resemblance. Austin Butler also looks great as a dark mirror of Timothee and I can even see how he can sort of fit in with the Skarsgard family.
Last thing, Rebecca and Stellan are both Swedish, which hints at Jessica's true heritage.

Is the Duncan in the Sietch one of the many gholahs of Leto IIs 3500 year reign?! Or is it the original ghouls Skytale gifts Paul aka Muab- Dib in his Imperial ascendancy in COD's Bene Gesserit assassination plot?

That's the thing! Leto already knew that all this was a trap from the Harkonnens and the Emperor.
He gamble to still take Arrakis and get the Spice Production on the run while joining forces with the Fremen to be indispensable for the Empire and protecting himself from an invasion.
What he didn't know is that the invasion was set to happen only one month after taking Arrakis. He just didn't know how short on time he was.

@@gsalii They quite literally had no choice. If they refused, Big E might have ordered their execution for going against Big E's decree (it was only a "do you accept?" on a surface level, in reality they had no choice, it's just bureaucratic appearances being maintained). Big E also likewise practically forced the Harkonnen to become poor, because they'd be forced to wage war, and the Spacing Guild doesn't like war because it's bad for their galactic business, so they demand exorbitant amounts of money to allow troop transfers of that kind of scale at all. This basically bankrupted the Harkonnen, draining like 90%+ of all of their money gained from controlling Spice harvesting for some 80+ years, and given 1 suitcase of Spice is enough to BUY A PLANET, this means that's quite a lot of money they lose to get the Spacing Guild to transport their troops to Arrakis (they are the Economic threat to House Corrino, that the Atreides are the Militaristic threat to it, which is why Big E decided to have them both ruin themselves, for the greater good of the House Corrino)

Its pretty difficult to find logical inconsistencies in these perfect films, but I might've got one - Paul had a vision of Duncan lying in a room full of dead Sardaukar soldiers, the Emperor's blades. Doesn't that strike Paul as little suspicious out of all the things he saw? :D

    • @NeonVars
      @NeonVars Před 2 měsíci

It's possible Paul simply didn't recognize the amor having never been exposed to a Sardaukar solider before landing on Arrakis. Its implied that its Paul's first time leaving Caladan. Or it could've been an honest oversight lol.

In retrospect, sure, but he is unaware of the full extent of the impending ambush and massacre. He has no idea what exactly he's looking at, maybe Duncan was fighting alongside the Sardukar and was killed, maybe the Sardukar are a visual allegory for something else, he doesn't really know.
