- Hey everyone! Today I’m going to show you how to flush the coolant on a Honda S2000. This is one of my most requested videos so I really hope you enjoy it.
According to the owner’s manual the coolant should be be replaced after either 120,00 miles or 10 years of use. My car already has 145,000 miles but I don’t have any maintenance records from the previous owner so I’m just flushing mine to be safe.

Thanks for all of these videos man. I just picked up an AP1 and these are going to be useful for sure!!!
You guys make the best freaking s2k videos straight up.
Thank you!
Best how to coolant video yet ! Thanks a lot ! Now I feel confident enough to try this without any hassle !
You’re welcome
Awesome. Direct, straight to the point, and clearly explained for novices like me. Thank you 👍
You’re welcome
I had to do this yesterday! Overheated in the California heat. This video made the job very easy. Thank you.
You’re welcome!
love your work! just picked up an AP2 so I am subscribed and looking forward to more videos from you.
Thanks. Let me know if there is anything you want to see.
I bought this funnel kit on Amazon and it worked perfect. Followed instructions and had no problems.
Thanks for letting me know how it went!
Great!! I bet your videos have the best audio quality!
Good to know that you don't need to touch the second bleeder valve near the firewall.
Hey thanks! I invested in a 50$ microphone a while back and I think it made a big difference.
Even Billman says touching the bleeder valve near the firewall isn’t necessary so I think you can take that to the bank
Great video, very easy to follow - thank you!! You just gained another subscriber. Now to do this on my AP2.
Quick and nicely done mate!
This is such a well set out video to follow. Thanks for the great content!
This is dope keep them coming man!
Thank you again.
Yesterday we change the radiator and a friend send me This video tutorial.
We didnt Know about the process.
Thanks
should look into one of those coolant refill air purge tools, just got one the other day and is totally worth it. Don't have to wait around while the car is running to bleed the coolant system. Tool takes care of all that within seconds!
Awesome, well edited, and shot.
When you watch this video but don’t have a S2000 😂😂
Such a great video, thank you!
Looking to get one in the near future and your channel will help me save so much money.
Videos are very informative and straight to the point, you make it very easy to learn how to work on your car.
Subscribed real quick!
Thank you!!!!
Hi, thanks for the vid! Very clear and informative. Quick newbie question. When draining, do you have the car power still on for those few hours? (Earlier you had it set the power on and heater on high.
No, I turn the power off after setting the heater on high. You just need power so the valve opens. Good question!
thanks man your the best, i saved alot of money because of you
That’s what I love to hear!
Fantastic information. Thank you.
Thank you for awesome videos!
This is beyond helpful. Thank you.
You’re welcome!
great video as always man!
Thanks buddy!
Awesome video. Quick question though, I plan on upgrading to a Koyorad radiator since my OEM one is leaking a bit. After replacing the radiator, will this exact bleeding process still work?
Very helpful 👍🏼 thank you
Might sound like a lot to ask, but a DIY clutch replacement would be awesome! Want to tackle this myself but want to make sure I'm following procedure correctly.
I have every intention of filming this the next time I have to do it. It might happen within the next year on the CR since I think I have a transmission synchro issue. I'll probably replace the clutch while I'm in there. Additionally, if someone local with a completely stock car wants to have the job done I'll do it and film it.
Thanks for the video!
I'd like to see a step by step video on the air intake manifold removal. Or comment a good enough link so I can do it without ripping or breaking any clips or connectors please. Ty
DIYGuys. Excellent radiator fluid replacement video. But, what if I want to do an entire cooling system flush and clean?
This will get almost all fluid out of the cooling system. If you want to go even further you can blow the rest of the fluid out using compressed air.
Excellent! Thank you!
Looking at the Honda service manual, there's a step to also remove the drain plug from the right side of the engine block. I was searching for a video to show that step as well. Any reason this step wasn't covered here? Otherwise, I'd say kudos for a very thorough and thoughtful video. Takes the guesswork out of the bleeding procedure too, and I learned about a cool funnel I didn't know existed. Thank you.
The general consensus is that the engine drain bolt is so difficult to reach that its not worth the effort to drain the last few teaspoons of coolant out of the block. Alternatively, you can blow out remaining coolant using compressed air.
@@DIYGuysvideo there is a lot more than a few teaspoons behind that drain plug on the block, got really messy when I drained mine.
I agree it's probably not worth the effort.
@@andersw1152there is, both heater hoses are at the top so the heater is still full of old coolant along with pockets of coolant in the engine block. This is not a flush and this guy should change the heading
Ty for the video. I’m actually doing this right now and wondering if it’s normal to have be coolant be calm and have little bubbles pop every 3-5 mins
Yep. Seems pretty normal to me.
great video...thanks!
My s2000 is a 2001 with 85,000 miles. I plan to change coolant soon. Should I change radiator and heater hoses?
I did the Billman bleed. using the funnel seems a lot cleaner lol
After draining the old coolant, does it make sense to remove the jack stands and lower the car back onto leveled ground before proceeding to fill the radiator with the new coolant?
Where you say turn the dial to the highest setting with thr ignition on when you say ignition on do you mean with the car running or just the second postion before you start the car also how long after I do this would I have to wait to turn thr car off and open thr cap
Thanks
Please could you do an oil catch can install? Read so many different ways of installing and I’m hella confused.
I will when I need one, which could take a while. I’ve never done the install before though.
Hello, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am having issue with my heating on the car. The car has gone through a full rebuild and we bleed the car but my heating is still not scorching hot,. The car was jacked up front like in the video we let it run and there was no more bubbles coming into the bleeding funnel. Do you think car might still have air into the system or there might me a clogged heating exchange?
Nice and easy thank you bro, u got a video on head gasket?
No
Is Honda Type 2 the best. What about those additives from Redline water wetter or Prestone water pump lubricate. I alway get tempted by these magic potions.
I’m not sure if it is the best but it is safe and proven. I think for most applications Honda Type 2 is great. I have done almost 30 track days on this stuff.
Thank you for including the funnel link just what I was looking for - question: I have an ap2 with the green coolant now and I want to change to Oem blue - should I flush with water until clear and then add oem blue or can I just drain the green and refill with blue - I am leaning toward drain and complete water flush and refill with oem blue
I think either solution would be fine. If you use water make sure to use distilled water.
DIYGuys thank you for the fast reply - you have a new sub!!
Do you ever squeeze the top radiator hose with the air bleeder open and closing before releasing the hose? That’s part of the Billman method. Maybe you found that all air exited the system with the funnel method. I ended up doing both.
Yeah didn’t have any issues with the funnel method so didn’t bother doing the Billman bleed.
Did you rev the car a little bit? I found that helped get rid of the air.
We thanks for contributing your experience. Maybe I’ll make a video for his method as well!
Forgot to ask if your radiator fans came on as well?
Any advice or tips on removing the upper and lower radiator hoses more easily? Thanks :)
Yes. The hoses will be effectively stuck. You won’t be able to break them loose just by pulling on them. What you need to do is twist them to break their bond with the plastic. I recommend using some pliers to do this.
Hi diy, for the s2000 would u recommend Mobil one 75w-90 or 75w-140 for the s2000 I don’t track my car or anything Judy weekend cruise thanks
Either is fine
Do you need to turn A/c on ?
Squeeze some of the thick rubber tubes for hidden air bubbles?
Nope
Hey man great video I know I'm kinda late but would this procedure also work on AP1?
Yeah, it works on any S2000
@@DIYGuysvideo thank you!
In what position is the control valve supposed to be got heat to pass through ??
Do you leave the key turned with the heat on the entire time you're draining?
Hi what size plastic hose did you use?
Saw my local Walmart carry blue coolant for Honda’s now and I was wondering if you think it’ll be ok to use that? I know Honda coolant is recommended but will it be ok if the specs are similar?
I would just get the Honda coolant. I doubt that all blue coolant is the same, they are probably just using artificial coloring.
DIYGuys. With aluminum parts in a Honda, is it bad to flush with distilled water and flushing agent ??
Should be fine.
Thanks for the video! I flushed my 00 ap1 end of last year. It still had the original green coolant. Car has 32k miles. I noticed yesterday there's like a slight white goo in the coolant reservoir. I used the oem type2 blue coolant from the dealer. Any ideas what it could be? Looks almost like oil it was clean green color before I flushed it. Almost looks like oil droplets.
Not sure unfortunately
@@DIYGuysvideo I think it's the old coolant and it's gunked up. I might take a sample in for analysis I don't think it's oil. Which is good! This car was sitting in a barn not driven since 2017.
Where did you get that phone holder?
How to you get the valve to open at 00:35. With the heating at max and fan on, w ignition position 2. I couldn't get it to move. The car was cold (engine off). I decided to ignore that part and do the rest. I was able to follow along and the car seems fine. Did I miss anything by not doing that bit
It worked for me. I’ll get back to you in a few days as to whether engine cold/hot matters at all.
Either way, your videos have been extremely helpful. Thanks for putting in the effort. Look forward to you updating your library with more S2000 videos
Hi I know you don't have a video on replacing a water pump well not yours of course. My car is just starting to make a winding noise right in front of motor. No leaks or anything or smell of coolent. Is the water pump a hard job or pretty easy once you take off the belts and remove the airbox?
I’m not sure to be honest. Are you sure it’s your water pump and not some of the other pulleys?
@@DIYGuysvideo definitely not water pump. I was told on S2k forms in the air pump and that it's normal. Other pulleys I don't really know. I'm gonna get it looked at today by my loc mechanic. Thanks did u see the short video I posted?
Anyone know what size hose that clear plastic tube is ?
Cool but When you drain the radiator doesn't the coolant in the black remain? How do I change it all with out burning myself?
There will be very little coolant left in the block. Just gotta left the coolant cool down!
Very good video. Why no opening of the rear bleed valve?
Doesn't seem to be necessary.
thanks to have asking this question, its now clear in my head:P
This is a silly ask, but could you post where you bought the clear plastic hose? More specifically, what size tube/length etc?
I went to home depot. I think I used the same size hose that I use for bleeding the brakes. 1/4" inner diameter hose.
@@DIYGuysvideo Thank you sir! Your videos are great!
Can you show how to put the fender badges on perfectly on a car that doesn’t have any?
Honestly probably won't be doing that any time soon but I'll at it to the ideas list.
What about the engine drain bolt? Honda manual says that needs to be drained as well
Very little coolant will come out of that drain bolt. Not worth it
Thanks
I followed step by step & my heater still fails to get hot , any other suggestions ?
Any chance you guys plan to do a vid on torque sensor replacement? I would really appreciate it! Keep up the great work👍🏾
I will do when if one of my car or potentially someone local has the issue but not going to do it for fun. I have seen it mentioned before tho so I am aware of it.
How long should I leave the car in the on position? Should it be left there for the remaining of the flushing?
You just have to leave the ignition in the on position so there is power and the valve opens when you turn the temperature knob to hot. Otherwise it doesn't need to be in the on position.
How do you troubleshoot if there are no bubbles in the funnel, but the air isn't blowing hot?
You need to get the engine hot enough that the radiator fans come on a few times. During this process the thermostat will open and the air should start blowing hot.
I’ve run into an issue. I did a full flush with water and a flushing chemical and then proceeded to follow your steps in the video. When I refilled with coolant, and got the car up to operating temp, the coolant in my no leak funnel started bubbling like crazy and splashed out of the funnel everywhere before the radiator fans could even come on. Please help!
The bubbling can be pretty violent at times but it should get better as more air is removed from the system. Also make sure you’re not filling the funnel too much
What do I do when the reservoir gets overfilled when filling up coolant through the radiator?
My reservoir was cracked.. replaced and fixed!
salute!!!
where did you get the funnel and adapter from?
Amazon links in the description!
I did this but with the car on the ground instead of on jacks. Maybe this will get the air out for sure.
How are you removing old coolant from within the block?
You must have missed the part when I insert a straw and suck it out. Watch the video again
What's throwing up the cel?
Coolant is still, but theair coming out of the vents inside are not yet hot (cool/cold). How long should it take the air vents to warm up? It's been runnin for 25min. ?
Have the radiator fans come on yet? It all depends on how hot the coolant temperature is. At a certain temperature the thermostat opens and a bunch of air will be let out.
I just needed to lower the front end more, then eventually back to level and that worked. More bubbles reappeared during that time, too. (Using the spill proof funnel method)
DIYGuys Yeah 4-5 times. It's good now. Thanks again for all these vids
You’re welcome!
Any thoughts/comments on why the car would still overheat after this process?
System not completely bled. Thermostat is stuck possibly.
What size clear hose is needed for the coolant bleed valve?
I had the same question. Did you ever find out what size?
@@Vlxx_R no I didn't get a answer
Just to be clear, no need to use the bleeder valve to bleed the system with this funnel?
While filling the radiator the front bleed valve is open to let air out. The rear bleed valve is not used.
You dont drain the block like the manual says?
No.
DIYGuys ok thanks!
After the first two steps of turning heater in full, and draining the coolant. Does the engine need to be off?
Ignition just needs to be on to move the heater to full since it will open a valve. Engine should not be on.
@@DIYGuysvideo okay so leave the car ignition to “on” while the coolant is draining? Perhaps 2 hours like u said on video?
The ignition doesn’t need to be on while draining. Just needs to be on in order to power that valve so that it opens.
What size is the clear plastic hose?
I believe I use the same size hose for bleeding brakes which is 1/4" inside diameter and 3/8" outside diameter
Need help!! I followed the directions exactly the way you said but I’m not getting any heat. How long does it take for to heat to get hot? My hoses were burning hot so I tried holding the throttle and the coolant started creeping up till it’s almost spilling so I shut off the car. Any suggestions?
My temp was warmed up but it didn’t get any higher. Am I supposed to just let it idle till I feel heat even if it takes quite a while?
Yeah. Should do 1-2 cycles with the radiator fans coming on. Should be about 205 degrees F. If the coolant is spilling out of the funnel, use less coolant since it seems to expand when heated.
@@DIYGuysvideo ok it took a while but my heat is schorching hot now. I then shut it off and let it cooled down and when I went back the funnel was empty. All that coolant went back in the radiator. Is that normal?
@deegaw11 you should have removed the funnel and capped the radiator while the fluid was hot so it would pull coolant from the overflow as the pressure drops. You may have introduced air into the system.
@@DIYGuysvideo I filled the funnel back up and let it idle and the heat was still hot while watching the coolant and there were small amounts of bubbles but it stopped and the coolant was calm. I then put the cap back on and shut it off so hopefully I’m good now.
So.. do you turn off the car to wait the coolant to cool off or leave the car on till you’re finished ? It say anything about it in the video.
At which part of the process are you talking about? At the beginning I turn the car off. At the end I also turn the car off when I remove the funnel. Not to allow the coolant to cool off necessarily but just to reduce the risk of burning myself with the hot coolant. You could optionally wait for the coolant to cool off completely.
DIYGuys DIYGuys in the beginning of the video, you turn on the car but not completely then you set the heater temp to the max.. so after that, do you turn the ignition off completely then started flushing?
I turned the ignition to the on position so that I could use the battery power. I didn’t turn the motor on!
I just did this, the heat was hot and the bubbling stopped but the radiator fan never came on. Is this okay?
I think the concern is that the thermostat doesn’t open until the car is at 194F. The radiator fans come on at 205F. So the radiator fans are a good indicator of when the system has gotten hot enough that any air pockets should have been removed. So my answer is... maybe.
@@DIYGuysvideo Hey! Just coming back to answer what happened since I had to do another coolant flush on my second S2000. Turns out the fuse to the radiator fan was busted and that’s why it never turned on 😂
My cars been on for about 45 mins and the radiator fans are coming on, and it’s blowing hot air but not enough to burn my hand. Just keep waiting?
Two cycles of the radiator fans should be enough.
DIYGuys thanks for the quick response. So I should be okay to continue? It went through multiple cycles
I would take it for a test drive and just keep an eye on the temps.
@@DIYGuysvideo Will do, thanks!
What happens after test run If it over heats What’s the next step ?
Rebleed and make sure you have no leaks! Air just be in the system.
Wont the flap close again when you wait for it to cool before draining
How would it close if you open the flap and turn the car off?
@@DIYGuysvideo hi , sorry i just watched again i miss understood, I thought the valve opens when the car gets up to temperature not when turned to hot position on heat control button .. my bad 🤦🏻♀️
What kind of coolant did you use
OEM Honda Type 2. Should be in the description
What coolant does the it take?
Honda Type 2 check the description
Can this be done with one gallon only or do I need 2 gallons
You need two gallons
DIYGuys but don’t you just fill the yellow cup halfway one time ?
No, it’s only halfway after filling an entire gallon already
DIYGuys oh so you fill the radiator up with a whole gallon first then it gets half way in the cup after
Yep
Hey what size is your plastic hose lol.
1/4” inner diameter
What's up with your check engine light, bro? ;)
Probably was a catalytic converter or o2 sensor issue I forgot ha
Wonder how long the hoses will last.
168k miles and > 50 track days here. Doing well so far.
@@DIYGuysvideo awesome - thank you.
I left it on for 45 minutes and it wasn’t blowing hot air and the coolant was still bubbling I didn’t notice any coolant leaking anywhere at all any ideas?
Have the radiator fans blown twice? It needs to get hot enough that the thermostat opens. Ambient temps could be cool this time of year.
@@DIYGuysvideo Yeah they went through 6 to 8 cycles before i shut off the car. It was bubbling pretty frequently at first then it just became an intermittent bubbling. Would an open coolant reservoir cause excess air in the system?
Hmm. I don’t think an open coolant reservoir would matter since air should only be leaving the system. As it burps, coolant should be replacing air in the system. As long as you continue to see bubbles there is either air in the system or air is entering the system through somewhere else. Strange
Clutch !!!!!!
In the middle of editing it. Will
Be out soon!
I did mine and it was annoying. I ended up with hot air not blowing unless I was driving under acceleration
I just took it to Firestone and perfect
Did they finish bleeding it?
Just did this but my fan won’t come on and heat is not hot
You haven’t gotten the coolant hot enough.
@@DIYGuysvideo im back, ended up changing my thermostat . Had a slight almost overheat situation where my idle pulley fell off, and my belt got undone. Going to reuse this video to finish the job lol.
Heater on hours? And not start the car?
What?
DIYGuys coolant replacement: start with turning on the heater but do not start the car for hours ?during drain process? The battery will last that long?
Just saved myself $155.00 .........thanks !
Why did he let it drip drain for hours? I took it out all the and it drained in 2 min.
Mine was slow dripping for a long time. I was just being safe
@@DIYGuysvideo What if it's burping but my heater never gets hot?
Thermostat might not have opened yet. Radiator fans need to come on a couple times to indicate coolant temp is hot.
@@DIYGuysvideo Thanks, it's blowing hot now and the fan came on. I was getting worried cause it took a long time; probably 25 minutes. The whole time I was thinking "shit, my block has no coolant and Im burning up the motor."
Isnt this a coolant drain and fill? not a flush
