Romney Chides Administration: Three Words Do Not Make an Effective China Strategy

  • At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing today, U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) chided the Administration on its failure to deliver to Congress a comprehensive strategy to counter the China threat, which was required by law to be provided by June 2023-almost one year ago. Senator Romney has repeatedly urged the Administration to complete this strategy amidst the increasing threat posed by the rise of China. Romney’s legislation requiring the development of this strategy was originally enacted as a part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022.

      I'm a Dem (Mass) and Romney was an outstanding governor. We had a massive (and growing) debt in Massachusetts (far larger per capita than any other state in the country). Romney reengineered that debt (and the budget) so that our credit rating shot up (and interest payments shot down). He also created science parks to incubate technology and small pharma. Now, Boston is the global leader in the pharmaceuticals. The amount of wealth his foresight created is staggering. Per capita income in Boston metro is one of the nation's highest.

    Every politician should take note. Senator Romney calls someone out on the carpet. Notice that he does it with civility, yet firmness, and, without demeaning, degrading, calling someone names, or acting like a complete ass hat. These are the people that we should be electing into office. A civil discourse to identify and solve a problem. How refreshing. Bullies have no place in politics, their agenda is as clear as if it were written on their foreheads.

Our nation is bickering on minute, miniscule issues that's inducing the polarizing environment we live in. We forgotten who we are. Democracy is truly being taken for granted. Time to speak up more before it's too late for us to fight China and Russia. A New Cold War has already started. This is not warmongering it's the reality of what's at stake. Whether we live in a world of autocracy (China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Hungary) or democracy (US, France, Germany, UK, Finland, Israel, Canada, Mexico, Japan Taiwan and even parts of Middle East and Africa. True statesmanship is about responsibility more than the ability to command. It's defending the power they hold recognizing true democracy in a world full of chaos and sycophants.

    Political systems that are so different from each other should never have become economically intertwined; the failure of this endeavor was evident right from the start. After a period of globalization, there will inevitably be a period of deglobalization, and we are currently at the outset of this phase. Regime types do matter, and a global order can only be achieved with countries that respect rules and borders. Trade makes countries stronger, but strengthening your opponent is never a smart move.

    This is something I want the political parties to stop doing. Stop comparing our economy of a well regulated Capitalism... to Socialist and Communist countries. Their political ideology is built from their social and economic platforms and both of those systems are keepers of slavery. According to the 13th Amendment we no longer have slavery, stop comparing us to them- we are better than them. Their ways were our nations history, keep it there.

    • @mshindiwataji
      @mshindiwataji Před 3 měsíci

      @@lizhall2961 Good Morning. The point I made^^^^. Nothing good would ever manifest for Americans, if we didn't condemn wrongful speech, regardless of party lines. That language is condemned whether it is Sen Romney or Sen Sanders speaking it. Our laws include China in trade very little and it is because of the way their economy is built. The U.S. prefers not to do business with countries that encourage "slave" related trade because we have laws against slavery here, we keep human rights a priority. Chinas economy is nothing we would compare our economy to, they are not built on the same foundation, the same principles. They are behind in the times comparing them to America. China forces their people to live according to what their govt. needs them to, they keep wages low on purpose, they control the number of children they have, etc. In comparing them, or competing with them, you basically say "you want the same for our country" or "you want the U.S. to be more like them". Sen Romney has voted those "ways" for America in a desire to compete with China. He knows his history as an elected official, how he has casted votes in the Senate, the legislation he has brought forth etc. Sen Romney knows and understands exactly what I meant by my comment. Sometimes an elected official makes the economy a priority and doesnt keep their eyes on things above. For when they keep their eyes on "things above" all these "things are added".

    Romney would have made a good president but as a Senator he is very problematic. In situations like the above, he does well but he is partially deranged regarding Trump and occasionally is completely off, i.e., Tulsi Gabbard and his comments about her, his votes on impeachment and his other policies are why he is so unpopular in Utah and has decided not to run again. His legacy would have been so much better if he had simply retired after his run for president.
