Yes until they brought out a clip for each leg that stopped your trouser bottoms from getting caught up in your bike chain those were the special days toys were simple & fun I remember French skipping with elastic you could play on your own I used to put mine over the bottom part of 2 bins at school to play.

So were gen X (I’m a 66’ baby the oldest in our family) we rode in the back of dad’s truck, cars had no seatbelts (all 4 of us smushed in the back of the Oldsmobile), rode our bikes everywhere and stayed out all day in the summer, it was great! 👍🏻

So the easy bake oven had no issues for 30+ years until the amoeba generation emerged in the 2000s and then it suddenly became a hazard...
And that says a lot, doesn't it?

I was there in the 1950s-60s. Very, very few children were injured by those toys. The loss of personal responsibility and rise of the Nanny State are far, far worse today.
Heck, we used to jump off things from awkward heights every chance we'd get.
My son fell out of a tree barefoot, landed on the ONE rock under it and busted his leg, I heard the crack it was nightmare inducing!! This was 12 years ago it still gives me the shivers. 😫

As a child growing up in the 70’s we were exposed to countless dangers not only from toys but from just riding our bicycles. All of us succumbed to some type of injury as kids playing with fun innovative toys. Certain toys were obviously right to be banned (lawn darts and anything radioactive), but we had toys with small parts and sharp ends that if properly supervised helped us grow wiser and more ready for adulthood. Had a BB gun as a kid and though I didn’t shoot my eye out I did chip my front tooth, but that was a cautionary tale in being trained on the safety and use of such toys.

Growing up in the 70s, I had a pair of Clackers. I could get them going pretty easily; it was stopping them that was the painful part.
I could never get the hang of them. My mum could she was good
Banned in UK schools after a couple of incidents where the balls shattered sending fragments into the eyes of kids and blinding them.
Does anybody remember being poor back then and making their own slip and slides out of trash bags 🤣😂I played with half of those toys, I made, it couldn't have been that bad. And the plastic bubbles, I can still to this day remember what that smells and tastes like. That was one of my favorite things. And lawn darts, that was in every weekend occasion.🤣😂🤣 The 70s were the best 🔥
Don't forget rushing to the blue light special in K-Mart or buying the K-Mart sub sandwiches. Yep, poor and sooo happy compared to todays kids.

We didn’t have sleds so we used cardboard to slide down our “hill” in the backyard in the 70’s, we have movies of it and it was hysterical to watch.

While Clackers, the atomic energy lab and the CSI fingerprint kit were out and out dangerous, many of these toys were perfectly safe to use... WITH PARENTAL SUPERVISION! The key words being parental supervision.
Having a parent there to say things like "Don't put that in your mouth", "That's hot, don't touch it" "You can hurt yourself/someone by doing that", "Don't stick your fingers in there, you'll get stuck/hurt/burnt" and other bits of wisdom that children have to learn is what made a potentially dangerous toy a safe and fun thing. And the ever dreaded "I told you so", when advice was not taken, was worse than a spanking. (Yes, I said spanking) Having a parent there to oversee and direct the activity was what kept many children from becoming hurt, injured or worse.
It is when you give a child a toy that generates heat and then abandon them that they get hurt. It is when you do not teach your children that the pans coming out of the toy oven are hot and can burn them that they get burned. It is from parental neglect that many of these toys went from being a thing of learning to being dangerous.
Would you rather your child learn how to bake a cake at 150 (or so) degrees, or let them forget and grab a pan that's 350 to 450 degrees?
Yes the Thing Maker could burn you (I speak from experience). But it was a very minor burn compared to the full size oven I use now. If I didn't want to listen to my Dad, a couple of quick burns and I understood the value of "proper safety procedures". Under my parent's supervision, I learned how to safely handle pots and pans; hammers, saws and even sharp woodworking tools. But it was under "supervision".
You see a ton of videos of children covered in Mom's makeup with it all over the room or covered in flour with it all over the kitchen. This did NOT happen in just a few seconds. This is where the parent(s) were ignoring their children long enough for them to make a huge mess. And that's dangerous. Not the flour, that's dangerous. It's not the make up that's dangerous. It's the lack of parental supervision that makes any situation dangerous. They are kids! They don't know what's safe and what is not. Parents need to teach (and protect) them.
Very good advice: When your kid(s) are quiet... you'd better go find out why. 👍

I can still smell the Superelasticbubbleplastic and taste the “cake” and “frosting” mixes from the Easy Bake Oven circa 1975!
Same here. I used to love that stuff. Made a bubble as big as I was lol. Took me all day.
I had the water wiggle thing. I got smacked in the face but that was fun. Others would laugh, others would watch and be afraid of the toy. Those jumping shoes look dangerous.
I still cannot recall hearing any stories about that causing injury....unless you run too fast to avoid it and hurt yourself.....

Have a set of the original set of the lawn darts, Jarts. Had them autograph by a child now an adult. He was at a vintage camper rally signing memmbers Jarts, he is known as the, Jart Boy.
Wham-O made the best toys !!!!!! I loved my slingshot, and it came with an attachment you could use to shoot arrows. My Dad took mine away for a week because I shot my older brother 😒 Oops !!! Circa 1963
I ordered my Wrist Rocket and Bang-site Cannon, from the back of Boys Life magazine. Dad said no to the monkey and alligator though.

I had a number of the Gilbert educational sets, but my favorite was their chemistry set. I kept trying to make explosives, but always failed.
My brother suceeded the first night he had his, Christmas 1962, mixed up something that went boom and left a nasty burn mark on the wall!
I remember hearing about the Snack Time Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.
Mattel also made "Incredible Edibles" that you could eat after making them like the way "Creepy Crawlers" were made. BOTH toys gave users TOXIC fumes which were NOT good to breathe.
I remember the edible version, although I also remember my younger brother having the Creepy Crawler.
@@jenelleprins5306 I never tasted them but I remember that people said they did not taste that good. And the fumes from the "Creepy Crawlers" were HORRIBLE since my friends had that toy. Not sure if making the edibles also produced bad fumes for kids to breathe.

I was never allowed to have an EZBake Oven. My mum said, “you can learn to cook in real oven like a human being”. Boomers are smart.
We played with all these so called " dangerous toys" for years. We made it to maturity. We didn't think anything of it. Hell, the danger part of it was all part of the fun! I'm so glad I was born a baby boomer. Today's kids have no idea of what they missed.
This video serves as an illustration of what happens when government runs amok. Some kids can hurt on anything (One of my nephews was like that- he's an asshat and a risk-taker). Me? I owned real tools when I was 8, and played with junk and old car parts...built tree houses...rode my bike miles away...had a blast while learning to be responsible for myself, and never got hurt. Feel sorry for the kids today who will never know such things, but who spend their childhoods being shuttled from one adult-organized activity to another where they just learn to have to follow rules. And then people wonder why 30 year-olds are now like little castrati living in Daddy's basement and playing video games.
I had a lot of toys with detachable parts as a young kid in the 70s and don’t recall trying to swallow any of them. Then there were kids who were dumb enough to swallow the contents of an abandoned soda can. One ended up downing a swig of gasoline that way. 🤦♂️
This just shows that our society and government cater to the stupid and punish the smart.

Some of these toys are no-brainers, they needed to go. Atomic Energy Lab, for example. But many of them, while not 100% safe, were safe enough for most kids under adult supervision.
My friends and I played with Creepy Crawlers, and nobody ever got hurt. Same with Slip-n-Slide. Part of growing up is learning to use common sense.

I had the "boys" version of skydancers, dragon something or other, anyway, they HURT when they bit your fingers or caught you in the face, but we thought they were fun anyway!

Had some of these and got hurt exactly zero times. They were not dangerous at all, the problem was people not being parents.
Boomer kids were tough! I'm 69 and I survived many of the toys in this video, plus a few more they missed. We made jumps for our bikes out of cement blocks and plywood and we crashed and burned, all without any bike helmets. We rode in the back of pickup trucks, built tree houses, and blew up stuff with fire crackers and M80's. We learned, some times the hard way, about what was reasonably safe and what was not.
I did all of that and more and I'm not even a boomer......I'm Gen X
How did we make it?
It was necessary to use the brain and occasionally get hurt, we don’t allow kids to get hurt anymore. (I was born in 66’)
A lot didn't, hence the banning.
I got hit by a shattering Clacker, burned by Creeple People, Creepy Crawler, Thing Maker and Easy Bake Oven heating units multiple times, nearly broke my elbow falling off of a pogo stick and had an “interesting” experience with some neighbors’ old shoes with springs on the bottom. The poor person’s version (which was much more fun) was to drill holes on each side of paint and coffee cans turned upside down and putting thin rope through the holes and then tying them securely. My friends and I would stand up on top of the cans, hold onto the rope handles and walk around on them. My first sprained ankle was courtesy of those cans, but we sure had fun with them!😅
I LOVED the pogo stick at my grandmas house along with the metal strap to your shoes roller skates. We got hurt back then but got a band aid and continued on.
Were them shoe things called Clip Clips? I had yellow ones...till I sprained my ankle. 😅 Thems were great times. I miss them.

Slip - N - Slide was always my favorite toy growing up in the 60’s during those hot summer days in Florida. Had clackers in the 70’s, now that was a dangerous toy. I also got a chemistry set one year that I requested. From what I remember it was a lot of fun. Oh, yeah and will never forget the toxic smell of plastic goop.
You forgot wham-O "Air Blaster". We would shoot rocks out of that thing, LOL
I found a pair of moon shoes at a yard sale! I tried them and almost broke my ankles so I then sold them for 300!
I tried making my own Slip and Slide but I only ended up injuring myself. The stupid ground was too hard and the rocks hurt. I tried putting it down a hill with dry grass.
I like in the video someone holding the slip&slide ends down with 2 bricks! Hey kid if you make it to the end of the slide you will get rewarded with a brick to you foot or head! wham-o
I feel clumsy and not so bright kids are the reason many of these toys were band. Don't stick your finger in a hot oven, don't stand in front of a flying lawn dart. Don't put it in your mouth. Lack of common sense kills innovation and we all suffer because of a simple few.
We had the clackers, did not get hurt. Had the super bubble and loved the smell still can think. We had the creepy crawlers got burnt but still played with it no scars. The sprinkler thingy never got hurt.
The first time I used a Slip’n Slide my swim trunks slipped and slid right off my body leaving me naked at the other end. Neighborhood kids had a great laugh.
I adored my Mattel Thingmaker! Despite the often burned fingers!

I had an easy bake oven when I was a child. I loved it. I loved making little cakes. I don't recall burning myself on it, but if I did, I got over it fast. We had lawn darts also.
It only takes one family and a good civil lawyer to destroy all the fun for the rest of us😖

Around 1960 I found an “old” chemistry set in my elderly neighbors trash. It had belong to their son in the 40’s or 50”s and they were cleaning out their basement. Man, the stuff we made mixing the direct chemicals with water - we actually made stink bombs that would blow up, heat up - we never knew what was going to happen - it was awesome!
I remember clappers but it was on the stick in my time period. N creepy crawler i didn't know they had it back in day..
I had a chemistry set, but don't think it had any of the more dangerous chemicals in it. Got it in 1964 for my eighth birthday.

And the Mattel Thing Maker was the greatest open ended toy ever created. You were limited to your imagination. There was no right or wrong. 18-20 years ago I bought every Thing Maker set Mattel made on eBay so my daughter could enjoy the same creativity. We did, and she never got burnt.
We have litigated the fun, wonder, and creativity out of toys like these.
You can find lawn dart sets at antique shows. Bought one last year 😊.

I'm 72 and as an only child, I had nearly all of these toys in the 50's-60's. I also had a toy iron that actually heated up and a chemistry set. Also, a perfume maker. I may or may not have eaten Play Doh. Dont ask, dont tell. I rode up in the back of the window in the car as car seats and seat belts had not yet been invented. The biggest tragedy in my life, back then, was when my skydancer was sucked up chimney. Did I mention I'm 72 years old. I somehow made it out alive.
The real danger of Clackers was the way they would beat the ever-lovin' daylights out of your arm. Bruises and bone fractures were common.
I had Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab. Had one of their chemistry sets too. I didn't see the danger, and my kids have turned out mostly normal.
I miss Lawn Darts.
I don't see the difference between Barbie roller blades and the metal friction toy cars and planes we had in the 50's. They made sparks, we had fun, and we survived. Is it more dangerous because it was marketed for girls?
What we have learned here is, people need to be protected from themselves. And especially, apparently, children. Because we should not be responsible to teach our children about the dangers of ignoring common sense. My point is, it's not the toys that are dangerous. It's the stupid kids. Not all kids, just the stooopid ones.
The constant reminder of danger after every toy gets old.

Silly-Putty, Lite-Brite, candy cigarettes, never really gave me an issue. It was falling out of poorly constructed tree-houses, your ramp collapsing just as you launch off it, chain on your bike popping at a bad time, etc.
Creepy Crawlers! I always wondered why they stopped making that toy.
Spud guns were big in UK, a pistol which fired pellets of raw potato as ammo.
The other big hit was Sekiden guns, automatic pistols you loaded with a chamber of up to 50 or so gold coloured little plastic pellet balls. They packed quite a punch and had quite a range. Like a sort of chain gun version of the pea shooter.
Now...pea shooters...who remembers THOSE ??!!
By 1980, Clackers were called "Kerbangers".

They forgot to add bikes, because they can fall off and get hurt. Jump rope, because they can trip you. Rollerskates, because you can fall. That's why you need to bubblewrap your kids and never ever let them outside.
Interesting video. I remember as a child playing Operation and the buzzer went off causing me to jerk away and I accidentally backhanded my friend. She had to go to the hospital because I scratched her eye with my fingernail. She came out alright and forgave me. Another "game" that was a bad idea was Twister.
At $29.70 in the early 1950s I can't imagine that many kids would have just casually gotten one unless they were serious about science! Superelastic..etc was fun to play with when I got some for my birthday, but even at ten I thought the stuff seemed awfully chemical! We had a fated Mr Water Wiggle that never worked right, but it stayed around in the garage anyhow! Every so often we'd pull it out in the summer and try to get it to work, but it would always do the same thing! Go up, tip over and spray water into the side of the house while my mom could be heard inside shouting to "Turn that da**ed thing off!" Haha! I don't know why my parents took so long to get rid of the thing!

Every toy could be easily turned into a weapon. Hotwheel tracks an SST pull starters were whips while certain tops could be wound up and stuck into someones hair for maximum pain. The good old days.
I grew up in the 60s playing with some of those toys, my brother and I play with lawn darts, I think they were invented by a non-parents to get kids killed!!! Oh yeah they're considered safe because they didn't have a point on it like a regular dart but guess what gravity f****** kills. 🤫🤪🤫🤔
Back when I was a kid you used to be able to order an actual monkey from the back of a comic book.
My Uncle took jarts to a whole new level, he would sharpen the tips so they would stick better. We had no clue of danger in the 70's we just rode our bikes with two others riding on the front and back, played jarts, played with our science kits (with mercury included) and made shrink art in the oven. Those were the days. Kids today are soooo boring.

Wow he just kept repeating the same safety issues over and over just slightly different each time but all meant the same thing by the 4th one I caught myself saying 'yeah we get it its not safe ' after that one till the end. Probably the only person who thought and said that but whatever 😊

Foresight in manufacturing is important I will agree.. most importantly though it's the parents responsibility to make sure their kids are safe. Nothing wrong with lawn darts in a responsible adults hands. Parents these days are just lazy AF.

These toys were predecessors of Darwin Awards... kids who ate their toys would hardly make it to adulthood.
Anything will break in one of those machines. Just have to put enough pressure on it.
I remember the mini carpenter set where they used real bladed saws and tools, and the toy fighter jets that were matal with a sharp point. Being a kid in those times was pretty much the survival of the smartest, if a child got hurt or choked with one of these toys, they were the stupid ones, like Homer Simpson said about the silly strings 'if you're stupid enough to eat it, than you deserve to die' true words 😆
