Will Palmer I bought an RX-8 a week and a half ago for $4750 with 61,000 miles on it. Easy enough to take care of, excellent car.
@@allinray616 lol how do you know how hard it is to take care of if you only had it for a week? i'm not saying they aren't, i'd like to own one too
@@CardboardOdyssey, the gearboxes don't last over 40k miles, coil packs don't like to live, the wiring in these things seems to have been done by a 70z era datsun engineer and the apex seals in the wankel blow after 80k miles and then the engine needs rebuilt. The car isn't impossible to take care of but it's really super finicky.
[Purchasing Advice]
For anyone considering buying an RX8 (or any rotary really), don't purchase the car if it hasn't been compression tested. If the car hasn't been tested recently (or not at all), ask if you can pay for a compression test at a local dealership / specialist.
The compression test costs about $100-200 but will provide you the life expectancy of the engine. Mazda's engine warranty has expired for ALL RX8s in existence, so PLEASE be proactive when determining if your next rotary is a good buy or not. Failure to do a compression test could cost you THOUSANDS of dollars if the engine has low compression (which means it needs to be rebuilt).
[Maintenance Advice]
If you ever do get an RX8 (they're a lot of fun), be sure to follow a strict maintenance plan to ensure your rotary stays healthy.
-Put fresh oil into the engine every 2 fill-ups
-Replace your ignition system (spark plugs, coils, wires) every 30K miles
-Perform regular oil and filter changes
-Bonus: Redline your car once a day to help prevent carbon build up
If you have any extra funds, reliability mods are recommended as well. I would recommend an AEM cold air intake (AEM and only 1 other brand give the best results for the RX8) to keep your rotary running a bit cooler. In addition, be sure to have a bottle of Mazda FL-22 coolant on hand at all times so you can top off the coolant reservoir when needed. A rotary is NOT able to use any other type of coolant as they strip the silicon off the apex seals, which is a one way ticket to denotating your engine.
