Towards the end you hit on something. Bird and Magic saved the NBA with their battles, but eventually became the best of friends. You should watch the documentary "The Courtship of Rivals"

Okay I have seen the documentary and it is a beautiful thing I don't know why I am an old lady from Canada and I'm not a basketball fan I am a MMA fan and I love Larry Bird he is a freaking Legend and my favorite story of all time was when he was getting upset and muttering under his breath of the game and Charles Barkley as to what was the problem and he said you guys are disrespectful he said like what do you mean he said you're putting white guys on me❤❤ he knew there was levels to this shit❤❤

You missed the commentary, he came back into game with a fractured right cheek, double vision and a concussion, never any pain killers for Larry, they still couldn’t stop him

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted players, I ever watched! *(Great Reaction)* 😊

One of the big things that shows his character is when Magic got Aids pretty much everyone stopped speaking to him and just dipped out being fake followers. But his rival Larry called him and kept up with him seeing how he was doing and encouraging him he could make it through it. That's where they really became friends forever, Larry will always be the true heart of basketball.

Larry Bird is the smartest most clutch player to ever play! He was three steps ahead of everyone on the court. One of the greatest shooters you will ever see. He still is the most complete player i have ever seen. All i have to say is Bird won three straight league mvps in a row, in a league with Jordan in it. And he came in second four other times. I think Bird and Jordan are the two greatest players i have ever seen. Period!

Another quote from Magic's speech at Larry's retirement ceremony ... "Larry told me once that, when he was gone there would be another Larry Bird to come along. I'm here to tell you that you're wrong. There will never, ever be another Larry Bird"

  • @falcon215

Larry had the uncanny ability to know where everyone was on the court at any given time. He was also generous with the ball. He knew the importance of utilizing everyone. I stopped watching basketball after the great matches between the Celtics and the Lakers in the mid 80's because I knew I wouldn't see playing like that again. I kind regret it because I missed the whole Michael Jordan era amongst others but I'm back to watching it again to see who's going to come next.

You should check out his passing video. And, talk about a warrior, check out this he one about his injuries. He broke his back putting in a driveway for his mom while he was with Boston. He didn’t quit. That’s why he almost always laid in the floor instead of sitting in the bench when he wasn’t in play. That was just to keep his back straight for the game.
There are other videos on Bird and Magics friendship. At the end of the video, at Larrys retirement, Magic was wearing a Celtics tshirt under his Lakers gear!

Larry Bird is to basketball like Secretariat was to horse racing. They had the heart of a Champion and a little bit of something only they had. I can watch the same thing over and over and still be just as amazed. So many said Larry was slow. Secretariat came out of the gate in last place almost every race and would soar past the others like they weren't even there just like Larry. It didn't matter who he was playing against because he was just made different. Basketball was his oxygen.

Think of jordan as bruce lee. Bruce lee may be the goat of fighters but chuck norris is on a whole other realm. Even if you are the goat though there are those who are an anomaly which can make even the goat sweat. They stand out as giants among men. Sharks among minnows. Legends. Larry Bird is one of those legends. One of the few who has consistent wins on the goat despite insane efforts on his part. That is what made larry so special. He was one of the few people that jordan had to admit he learned a lot from bird whether it be sharing the ball, playing with a high iq, or just straight up carrying out psychological warfare with everyone he played against. Even the coaches were not immune to larry bird getting in their heads. That is one advantage the celtics feasted on in many occasions. You could only assume you knew what bird was gonna do next and if you were even just the littlest bit off you would lose big. That is what made larry bird a legend. That is what makes larry bird the chuck norris of basketball simply because his playstyle is a legend that once you see you know you are seeing something different from most other players.

You should react to the two videos of Bird's 4 injuries and 5 injuries. Mind blowing. Also sophomore year in high school his coach said he broke his ankle in two places and tore all of the ligaments. Still showed up to each practice doing what he could as he could. Started working on his left hand shots. Just amazing.

    “Look at that crowd”
That steal was actually the final seconds of the 1987 ECF game 5 with the series tied 2-2. Game 3 of that series was the famous Bird vs Laimbeer fight, and then earlier in this game 5 was the same game where Robert Parish got revenge on Laimbeer by dropping him to the floor with some karate to the face. Best part was, the refs didn’t even call a foul.
    😆👍

Bird was, arguably, the greatest all-around basketball player of all time. He could pass, drive to the basket, shoot 3s, defend... you name it. Sure, other players could do one of them better than Bird, but do ALL of them as well? No.

We'll never see basketball like this again, they fought for their points they didnt just stand outside the line and shoot as many threes as possible - if you watch enough Celtics games from the 80's with other great teams from the era many of those games were literally dog fights.
