  • On May 28, 2022 we ventured off to the heartland to see Kansas's only operational steam locomotive the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe 4-6-2 Pacific no. 3415 on a windy and hot day. 3415 was built in 1919 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the world famous Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. She was the sixteenth of fifty 3400 Class Pacifics built for the Santa Fe. She served for the ATSF for 35 years until she was retired from service in 1954 and was put on static display in Eisenhower Park in Abilene, Kansas. In 1996, 3415 was moved next door to the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad and sat on display next to the depot. In 2005, the A&SVRR began restoration on 3415 and her restoration was completed in 2009. Since then 3415 operates on former Rock Island rails 5 miles from Abilene to Enterprise, Kansas. Back in the day 3415 could reach speeds up to 100mph but today 3415 takes things a lot more slower on the Abilene and Smoky Valley. Due to the FRA regulations 3415's flue time will expire later this year and will have to go done in a mandatory rebuild after 2022. So we were able to see 3415 one last time before she goes down for major rebuild. Not only Abilene is home to the ATSF 3415 and Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad but Abilene is also home to former United States president Dwight Eisenhower. Next to the railroad is the Dwight Eisenhower Museum and Library. The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad maybe a short line today but it has a lot of railroading history along with the Santa Fe 3415 and we recommend visiting this obscure railroad at least once. We hope y’all enjoy!

@@mratsfrailfan1894 A washout plug can not make an engine explode.. From what I've heard, Wasatch made the locomotive steam worse than it really can. So why would it blow up if it's got a problem getting the pressure to begin with.

If the boiler washouts were rusted shut then the boiler would've been ruined years ago due to water sitting. But as we can see, it's been running fine for the past decade.
