  • Tu es Petrus
et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam.
(Et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum.)
HAPPY HIGH HOLY FEAST OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL!
This motet by Robert Lucas Pearsall 1854, is a contrafactum of the madrigal Lay a Garland, using the Latin text Tu es Petrus. Pearsall, who was living at Wartensee Castle in Switzerland at the time of the work's creation, dedicated it to the first bishop of St Gallen, monsignor Johann Peter Mirer.
    Matthaeus 16:18-19.
Thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build My Church,
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against her
And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

The original is "Lay a garland" by Pearsall - a secular funerary 'madrigal' - so a contrafacta as "Tu es Petrus" (normally and exultant piece) seems very odd, but hey-ho, the music speaks for itself, and it is one of the highlights of 19th a capella works!

What's the source of your score? And who are the singers?
